Learning to code usually involves sitting in front of a computer, memorizing commands, and carefully checking for syntax errors. But what if instead, coding was colorful, fun, and let you interact with the real world?

That's what Google is trying to do with a new initiative called Project Bloks. Bloks is a system of toy blocks that kids can connect together to control other toys and learn the fundamentals of coding in the process — a bunch of blocks with arrows on them, for instance, could be used to direct a robot. Google's intention is for Bloks to teach the logic behind coding, so that kids can pick up basic skills as they play and later transfer that knowledge to real-world applications.

Après Buddy, Zenbo, Jibo et consorts, l’année 2016 est décidément celle de la robotique domestique. Les machines quittent peu à peu les usines pour intégrer nos foyers. Un essor notamment dû aux progrès technologiques en termes de miniaturisation de l’électronique mais aussi et surtout aux avancées de l’intelligence artificielle et de la connectivité. Les algorithmes informatiques sont de plus en plus poussés et performants, au point de créer des machines capables d’apprendre.

Fini les aspirateurs et les tondeuses autonomes. Les machines deviennent chaque année plus intelligentes et peuvent réaliser un nombre de tâches toujours plus variées. Un appareil n’est plus conçu pour remplir une seule et unique mission. Grâce à l’internet des objets, de nombreuses entreprises se sont lancées sur le créneau du robot assistant personnel. Certains ont fait le choix d’un design simpliste comme Google et Amazon qui travaillent chacun sur un assistant personnel matérialisé mais statique, qui prendrait en charge toutes les fonctionnalités de la maison : réglage du chauffage, verrouillage des portes, surveillance et gestion des lumières. Ces dernières figurent parmi les missions principales assumées par ces systèmes intelligents. D’autres ont choisi de créer des assistants personnels mobiles et intelligents pour conjuguer le potentiel de l’IoT aux besoins des consommateurs. Rien que cette année, des BIG I, Zenbo et AI.Mergence ont été dévoilés. Et des projets de longue date comme le petit français Buddy, vont enfin pouvoir être commercialisés.

Grâce à la connectivité, tous ces appareils peuvent enfin être reliés. Et si acheter une bouilloire connectée ne fait absolument pas partie de vos priorités, sachez que si on l’inscrit dans un système global, son utilisation peut devenir intéressante.

La robotique domestique entre dans une nouvelle ère. Exit les simples machines fonctionnelles, c’est au tour des robots mobiles, intelligents et multitâches d’entrer dans nos maisons.

Domgy, le chien robotisé

Les machines sont particulièrement prisées dans les pays d’Asie, et notamment au Japon et en Chine, qui figurent parmi les pays les plus robophiles de la planète. Cette énorme demande insatisfaite et très enthousiaste représente un créneau en or. De plus de plus d’entreprises s’attaquent donc au grand public. Et qui dit grand public… dit domestique.

Si nous autres européens faisons preuve d’une certaine méfiance à l’égard des machines, les chinois sont beaucoup plus enthousiastes à l’idée d’en accueillir une chez eux. Roobo l’a bien compris et vient de lancer l’un des touts premiers systèmes autonomes pour la maison. Domgy (anagramme de My Dog) est un compagnon de vie non invasif (22 cm de haut) qui se charge de gérer votre foyer. La start-up basée à Pékin s’est en réalité occupée avant tout de la partie software, puisque c’est la société coréenne Innovative Play Lab dans laquelle Roobo a investi qui a développé le modèle hardware.

En bref Domgy réunit peu ou proue toutes les capacités habituelles d’un appareil domestique : assistance personnelle (comme pour les téléphones), assistance domotique (gestion centralisée de tous les appareils électroniques de la maison), divertissement (jeux, danse, musique et vidéos), gardien de sécurité (patrouille pendant votre absence et vous prévient en cas d’intrusion, peut également configurer des zones à risques pour les enfants et les personnages âgées)… Et ce grâce à des technologies désormais courantes comme la reconnaissance faciale, gestuelle et sonore, des capteurs en tout genre pour se déplacer sans accrocs dans la maison, un logiciel avancé qui lui permet de répondre habilement aux questions et ainsi de suite. Domgy peut également servir de téléconférencier pour vous mettre en relation avec vos proches. Il est même possible d’en prendre le contrôle à distance pour se déplacer directement dans la maison.

“Domgy a été développé pour servir de compagnon, d’ami. La solitude est l’un des principaux maux de nos sociétés, et les animaux peuvent parfois combler ce vide” explique Bruce Liu, co-fondateur et CEO de Roobo, “nous avons donc créé un personnage avec sa personnalité propre capable de reconnaître votre visage et votre voix et vous parler comme un ami. Il vous aide à envoyer des messages à vos proches et à surmonter votre solitude” résume-t-il.

Pour assumer son rôle, Domgy a été équipé d’un processeur MTK, d’une caméra Raspberry Pi 5M, d’une connexion wi-fi, bluetooth et infrarouge et d’un écran tactile. Côté détection, il embarque des capteurs de lumière, de température, d’humidité ainsi qu’un accéléromètre et un gyroscope pour ses déplacements. Enfin, le petit robot dispose d’une autonomie de 4 à 6 heures à une vitesse d’environ 5 km/h. Mais heureusement, lorsque sa batterie est presque épuisée, il se rend tout seul à sa station de chargement.

Roobo un acteur majeur de la robolution ?

La start-up pékinoise n’en est pas à son premier coup d’essai. Depuis 2014, elle a déjà lancé un appareil éducatif à destination des enfants, proche des modèles Amazon Echo et de Google Home, qui se contrôle par la voix et particulièrement abordable avec un prix avoisinant les 135€. Mais Roobo ne se limite pas à la robotique humanoïde. Elle officie dans les technologies les plus prometteuses. Son casque Idealens surfe ainsi sur la vague de la réalitié virtuelle et son drone Skye Obit comme le “drone social” qui suit son utilisateur. En plus de cela, l’entreprise s’attaque également au marché des wearables avec son casque connecté Runbone pour aider les sportifs à mesurer leurs performances. De quoi faire de Roobo l’un des acteurs majeurs du marché chinois de l’électronique dans les prochaines années.

La production de Domgy a déjà commencé fin 2015 et sa commercialisation est prévue dans les prochains mois.

When we started building TensorFlow, supporting mobile devices was a top priority. We were already supporting many of Google’s mobile apps like Translate, Maps, and the Google app, which use neural networks running on devices. We knew that we had to make mobile a first-class part of open source TensorFlow.

TensorFlow has been available to developers on Android since launch, and today we're happy to add iOS in v0.9 of TensorFlow, along with Raspberry Pi support and new compilation options.

To build TensorFlow on iOS we’ve created a set of scripts, including a makefile, to drive the cross-compilation process. The makefile can also help you build TensorFlow without using Bazel, which is not always available.

Microsoft wants to move beyond the keyboard and mouse to power the interfaces of the future. While the software maker has been investing in voice recognition and augmented reality scenarios, Microsoft's research division has made some significant progress with hand tracking. Researchers are working on software that will allow virtual environments to track and recognize detailed hand motion. The breakthroughs could apply to virtual reality headsets, or just the ability to more accurately control virtual objects on a screen.

[Harris Shallcross] decided to build a pair of smart glasses and recently completed a first prototype of his project ‘Ochi’ – an STM32 based, BLE-connected, OLED eyeglass display. There are of course several homebrew smart glasses projects out there; many are more polished-looking and nearly all of them also display information from a smartphone over Bluetooth. This one is interesting partly because it highlights many of the design challenges that smart glasses and other near-eye displays face. It also demonstrates the iterative development process: begin by getting something working to learn what does and doesn’t cut it at a basic level, and don’t optimize prematurely; let the process bring problems to the surface.

For his project, [Harris Shallcross] used a small 0.95″ diagonal 96×64 color OLED as the display. The lens is from a knockoff Google Cardboard headset, and is held in a 3D printed piece that slides along a wire rail to adjust focus. The display uses a custom font and is driven by an STM32 microcontroller on a small custom PCB, with an HM11 BLE module to receive data wirelessly. Power is provided by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a boost converter. An Android app handles sending small packets of data over Bluetooth for display. The prototype software handles display of time and date, calendar, BBC news feed, or weather information.

Devices like these have a lot to deal with. Weight and distribution of that weight is a concern, the size and comfort of the optics is important, and displaying data on a small OLED is only part of the battle – choosing what information to display and when are vital to the device being actually useful in any way, otherwise it’s just a tech demo.

This project set out to show whether it was possible to use the parts listed to make a glasses mounted smart display that was at least somewhat functional, and the software to support it. Clearly, [Harris Shallcross] succeeded at that, but what really showcases the development process is his list of improvements – what he decided needs to go into a second version, and why. One of those goals is to improve the optics; perhaps there’s something to learn from The $60 Bluetooth Head Mounted Display project, which used a similar OLED and a prism to locate the display off to the side instead of in front.

Qu’est qui est plus compact que la plus petite des minimachines ?  Une solution qui intègre votre PC à un élément indispensable de votre environnement de travail. Bureau, écran, clavier ou que  sais-je encore ? La solution d’aujourd’hui intègre la machine à utiliser directement dans une webcam. Elle est donc quasiment invisible aux yeux de l’utilisateur.

La TVPRO HD6 n’est pas un monstre de performances mais l’équipement embarqué devrait répondre aux besoins de la majorité des utilisateurs classiques. La petite Webcam embarque l’équivalent de ce que proposaient les tablettes sous processeur Intel Bay Trail l’année dernière : Un Atom Z3735F dissipé passivement associé à 2 Go de mémoire vive et 32 Go de stockage. Un lecteur de cartes MicroSD permettra de monter un peu plus d’espace pour stocker des documents.

Pour le reste la connectique est assez complète, deux ports HDMI pour brancher la caméra sur deux écrans, deux ports USB 2.0 et un port RJ45 non détaillé. La TVPRO HD6 prend en charge le Wifi 802.11 b/g/n et embarque un module Bluetooth 4.0. Deux ports jack pour un micro et n casque sont également présents.

La partie optique est une webcam 1080p sans plus d’infos, un double microphone est bien sur de la partie mais la webcam cache aussi une petite paire d’enceintes stéréo. Bref, on branche ce truc à un écran ou deux, on allume et on peut commencer à travailler, une fois un clavier et une souris reliés.

Un PC déporté dans un autre objet est un PC invisible.L’ensemble mesure 22 cm de large pour 4,8 cm de profondeur et 3,6 cm d’épaisseur, soit un encombrement bien plus imposant qu’une webcam standard. Mais sans avoir un PC sur son bureau ce qui est un avantage indéniable. L’ensemble sera tout à fait capable des travaux courants : Surf, streaming, bureautique, multimédia. Pas une formule 1 niveau performances mais en partant du principe que l’engin est inaudible et qu’il fonctionne sans encombrer votre espace de travail, c’est tout de même une solution alternative élégante.

La  TVPRO HD6 est vendue à 131€ sur AliExpress aujourd’hui. Ce qui n’est pas forcément donné. On a vu des équipements équipés du même « moteur » interne bien moins chers sur le marché. Mais c’est probablement le prix à payer pour l’originalité du concept.

Premier Farnell, the biggest maker of the wildly popular Raspberry Pi minicomputer, is now being acquired by Daetwyler Holding AG, a Swiss industrial component supplier, for approximately $871 million. According to Bloomberg, the union will reportedly allow both companies to better compete in the components market.

"By combining forces, we significantly increase our competitiveness and extend our product range," Daetwyler Chairman Ulrich Graf said in a statement, "facilitating a one-stop shopping experience for our wide range of customers from a multitude of industries."

Luxembourg has had its sights on space mining for quite a while. Now, it’s betting big: it has just set up a €200 million ($227 million) fund to entice space mining companies to set up shop in the tiny nation, in a bid to become the “Silicon Valley” of space resources.

The initiative will primarily benefit two American companies: Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources. The fund will be used to finance asteroid survey missions that will be launched within three years. Luxembourg will also invest in research and development for technologies needed to identify, extract, and process minerals, water, and other valuable space-based commodities.

A press conference on June 3 of last year also hinted that the fund may be used to make direct capital investments to become shareholders in the two companies.

Luxembourg is also looking at drafting legislation that legalizes the right of companies to extract and own materials on asteroids, the moon, and other celestial bodies. This would be similar to prior legislation passed by the U.S. just last year.

Forget Siri and Cortana. Soon, you may be able to give commands to machines just by “thinking” them.

A team of researchers and engineers at Melbourne University are developing a stentrode, a tiny implant to be placed into a blood vessel next to the brain, which can record electric activity from a specific part of the brain. The information will then be decoded and interpreted into thoughts.

Dr. Tom Oxley, research lead, said the study is purely focused on harnessing the possibilities of bionics to improve the medical industry, particularly in the treatment of paralysis and epilepsy.

Using the stentrode implant, people who are suffering from paralysis or severe spinal cord injuries can use their thoughts to control the movement systems attached to their bodies, allowing them to interact with their surroundings again.

Another goal of the study is to find out what’s happening in the brains of people who are having uncontrollable seizures and be able to predict and address the issue. The team has to develop a custom-fitted decoding algorithm to translate the electric brain activity into useful information.

To date, the research team says they have already recorded successful results during animal trials, which were published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, and are keen to get started in human clinical trials by 2017.
