Tesla expanding its UK supercharger network in London and Birmingham

by Richard Devine

Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S hasn't graced UK roads for long but the company is already expanding its British network of its super fast, superchargers. The latest sees new charging points having been installed at Hyatt Regency hotels in London and Birmingham, with the London installation becoming the first supercharger in the centre of the city.

The strategic positioning of the two new Superchargers is an important link for Model S owners between the UKs two main cities. Able to gain half charge in just 20 minutes, the Tesla Supercharger is the absolute best way to juice up. It'll take time for both cars and Superchargers to hit the roads in numbers but its great to see Tesla start picking up so soon after launch in the UK.

LONDON, August 12, 2014 – Tesla today opened new Supercharger locations in London and Birmingham, part of a rapid network expansion that will soon allow UK Model S owners to drive anywhere in the country and charge for free, for life.

The first new Supercharging site is located at Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill, on Portman Square. The Supercharger can be accessed in the hotel car park, which will be free to Model S owners for one hour while charging. With valet parking available, it is the first Supercharger in central London and represents the first step in Tesla's inner-city charging strategy for the UK. Such centrally located Superchargers will allow customers who don't have access to off-street parking or personal garages to easily find charging options close to home or work.

The second Supercharging site is at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham, on Bridge Street. As well as allowing Model S owners to charge upon arrival in Birmingham, the site enables electric travel to the Midlands and beyond.

"This Birmingham location signifies our first move out of London in recognition of the fantastic support in the area," said Georg Ell, Tesla's UK Country Director. "We will open a store in coming months offer Midlands-based Model S owners a convenient local service.

"Both Hyatt Regency hotels offer a great base for Model S owners whilst charging. With everything from bars and restaurants through to business centres and gym facilities*, there is plenty to keep you occupied for your 30 minute charge."

These new Supercharger locations not only energise an important route between the capital and the UK's second city, but they also enable Model S drivers to travel long distances from the Midlands to Manchester and London, and across to France, Germany, and other European countries for free.

WORLD'S LARGEST FAST-CHARGING NETWORK

A Supercharger replenishes half a charge in about 20 minutes. Supercharger sites are strategically placed along well-travelled routes to allow Model S owners to drive long distances with minimal stops. They are located near amenities like motorway services, restaurants, cafes and shopping centres so drivers can stop for a quick meal and have their Model S charged by the time they're done.

Tesla has energised 168 Superchargers worldwide, making it both the largest and the fastest-growing fast-charging network in the world.

Hulkfile Shuts Down Following Expendables 3 Lawsuit

by Ernesto

hulkfileThree weeks ago a high quality leak of the upcoming The Expendables 3 film appeared online.

Fearing a massive loss in revenue, movie studio Lionsgate sued the operators of six websites that allegedly failed to remove the infringing files – Limetorrents.com, Billionuploads.com, Hulkfile.eu, Played.to, Swankshare.com and Dotsemper.com.

A few days ago the court sided with Lionsgate and granted a preliminary injunction to seize the financial assets of the site’s operators. In addition the sites were forbidden from linking to the infringing material. Since this includes user uploaded files, the order effectively means that the sites have to shut down.

Today the broad order claimed its first major casualty in cloud hosting provider Hulkfile. The company informs TorrentFreak that it has disabled access to all visitors from the United States and that it intends to shut down globally during the coming days.

“Hulkfile.eu is no longer accessible in the U.S. and will shut down completely soon. We can’t keep building our business on the weak base the preliminary injunction left us with,” Hulkfile’s operator says.

Hulkfile believes that Lionsgate has painted a tainted picture of its service to the U.S. federal court. The file-storage service says it honors all takedown requests, and even developed a special removal tool for copyright holders which is used by various takedown services.

“We’re not doing anything wrong, it’s a service just like any other cloud storage service in the world. If Hulkfile was started to support piracy, then why would we have created a takedown system which provided access to more than 40 copyright holders and piracy fighters?”

The takedown notices Lionsgate sent for the Expendables leak hadn’t been processed yet due to the vacation period, the hosting service claims. The movie studio could have taken the links down themselves if they used Hulkfile’s removal tool, but Lionsgate’s takedown partner MarkMonitor has apparently shown no interest in using it.

“We showed good faith by providing access to a removal tool which MarkMonitor never asked to gain access to, even after we offered it multiple times. Every day there is a new file-sharing service launching somewhere. The only way for copyright holders to protect their material is to cooperate, not to fight,” Hulkfile tells TF.

With an injunction that basically prevents Hulkfile from operating its service, the company sees no other option than to throw in the towel. Users will get the option to transfer their files to another hosting provider, but Hulkfile will not come back after that.

It seems that Hulkfile is not the only casualty. The smaller file-sharing service Swankshare completely vanished from the Internet shortly after the court issued its preliminary injunction. It’s currently unknown whether this site plans to stay down for good.

While the Expendables leak posed a serious threat to Lionsgate’s revenue, one has to wonder whether this justifies putting several other companies out of business with such broad injunctions. In particular because Hulkfile and others had no real option to defend themselves due to the ex-parte nature of the order.

Considering the ‘success’ booked by Lionsgate in such a small time period it’s safe to expect that more movie companies will use the same strategy in the future.

Three ways to make your phone unique

by Nick Sarafolean

If you go out into the world, you’ll find that every single person within it is different. Similarities can be found, but nobody is exactly the same. We all have our own characteristics and traits that make us who we are and cause us to be unique. That uniqueness, however, doesn’t have to end with people. Anything can be made to be unique, even smartphones.

In a world of nearly-identical slabs, your smartphone needs to have something to make it stand out and be unique in the crowd. This can be done in plenty of different ways and today we’re going to take a look at three of the ways that you can make your phone’s hardware look unique. Let’s cut the chit-chat and dive right in!

1. Buy a case

The simplest thing you can do is buy a case. Cases come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Best of all? There are almost always numerous options for every phone. If all you want for your phone is to change the color, fear not, as the market has no end of simple colored plastic cases. You can go as cheap or expensive as you want, depending on how high of quality you want. Fair warning, some cheaper cases will shed their color onto your clothing and furniture, so maybe buying $0.10 cases on eBay isn’t the best option.

Galaxy S4 Cases

If you’re looking for a bit more function or style with your case, you can check out the specific options for your phone. HTC has the Dot View case available for certain phones, which adds function and a design flair that won’t be found on other cases. Companies like Spigen and Tylt often have a variety of interesting cases available. Everything from leather holsters to bumper cases and everything in between. The only downside to some of the more premium cases is that they become harder to find for less mainstream phones. But for every phone, you’ve got a variety of cases to choose from, so do some looking and find out what you like best.

2. Get a phone skin

Phone skins are one way to make your phone really stand out from others. Basically, a phone skin is just a sticker that goes on the back, and often the front, of your phone. These can be artwork, photos, quotes or really anything that can be put on a sticker. Many places focus on making phone skin designs so you can choose from their selection that generally covers the back, sides and front of your phone with a corresponding wallpaper to match the skin. Nexus 5 Plaid Skin

If none of the already-created phone skins suit your fancy, most skin creators will allow you to create your own design. From here, you can upload your own photo and move it around to make it appear just the way you want it to on your phone skin. If you’re looking for a place to purchase phone skins, here are several options: Nuvango, DecalGirl, Zazzle, SkinIt.

3. Create something all your own

The best way to make your phone unique is to create something that’s entirely you. The ways you can do this are endless. One of the coolest ways is to create a case that’s all yours. The simplest method is to get yourself a cheap, clear, hard plastic case and then customize it.

That doesn’t sound very interesting though, does it? Well, here are some ideas to get you started. Cut out some strips and images from your favorite comic and glue them in there for an interesting blend that shows off your taste (tutorial here). Or perhaps you’re more of a poetry or literature person. In that case, cut out some quotes and verses from your favorites and put them in there for an aged, refined look. If you’re someone who likes to travel, cut out some sort of paper signature from every country or state you’ve visited. This gives you an interesting look while also providing a neat conversation starter for those who see it.

Comic Book Case

As always, you don’t have to use a case for these crafts. If you’re okay with directly applying things to the back of your phone, then by all means, go ahead. It’s your phone and you’re the one deciding how to customize it. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could look into changing the color of your device. A couple companies will do this for certain aluminum devices, but they’re hard to find. A better bet is either getting a different backplate or looking into something such as Plasti Dip. Note: I don’t entirely recommend this and can’t take the blame for any damage you may cause. Unless you’re experienced, don’t try dipping as you could damage your phone or leave it looking worse than before.

In any case, there are hundreds of ways to customize your phone in a way that’s entirely your own. Get thinking about which way you want to do it and then snap to it. Once you’ve mad eyour phone uniquely yours, come back here and drop a picture down in the comments so that we can all see how your phone is unique!

Amazon takes on Square with its own mobile card reader

by Tom Warren

Square is about to face even more competition in the mobile card reader space with the launch of Amazon’s new Local Register. Amazon’s credit card reader works in a similar way to Square, plugging into the headphone jack of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets to read card details and allow small businesses to process payments they’d usually take only in cash. Amazon is making its card reader available for $10, and it will work on iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire devices.

HTC is bringing its apps to other Android phones, Zoe coming this week

by Chris Welch

A few months ago, HTC outlined plans to release apps like BlinkFeed and Zoe, long exclusive to its own lineup of smartphones, for all Android devices. And it's about to execute on that plan: HTC will release a beta of its Zoe camera software later this week. The news was first revealed by Recode and quickly confirmed by Drew Bamford, who's leading the Creative Labs division tasked with bringing HTC's signature apps to hardware from competitors like Samsung, LG, and Sony. 260 people are working beneath Bamford, so HTC is dedicating a fair amount of manpower to the apps initiative. (The same team will continue handling development of HTC's own software, as well.)

Zoe, first introduced alongside the HTC One M7, automatically creates video...

Best Android Launchers

by Simon Sage

Want to upgrade your Android experience? Try upgrading your launcher.

The way we arrange, organize, and interact with our apps on Android is called the launcher. Launchers usually consist of a series of home screens, where we can arrange app shortcuts and widgets and an app drawer. Every phone comes with a launcher, but when they drop the ball, there are endless third-party launchers that not only pick it up again but knock it clear out of the park.

Previous incarnations of this article have tried to claim that there is one launcher to rule them all, that there truly is a best launcher out there. I don't really believe that's possible, even though I have a launcher I personally value over all others. You use your phone differently than I do, and I use my phone differently than my co-workers do or my friends or my family. Everyone has their own perfect launcher, but if you haven't found your favorite yet, then here are a few launchers we think will satisfy users of every type.

Best light and easy launchers

Are you someone who doesn't want to mess with a lot of bells and whistles? Do you just want to put your most-used apps front and center, maybe a widget or two, and get one with your Android experience? You want a fast launcher, a light launcher, one that doesn't need a lot of fussing and tweaking, and these are the launchers for you.

Best light launcher: Evie Launcher

Evie Launcher is a relative newcomer to the launcher scene, especially next to storied launchers like Nova Launcher, but Evie is a light little launcher that doesn't quit and uses gestures in a few really good ways. First and foremost, like so many recent launchers, Evie has a swipe up gesture to open the app drawer. Another popular launcher gesture Evie has is the ability to double-tap the screen to put your phone to sleep, either using the phone-locking Instant Lock or Smart Lock-friendly Timer Lock. There's even a gesture shortcut to take you into Google Now, if you miss that dedicated page from Google Now Launcher.

Evie is easy to set up and run with, but you can customize the desktop grid and turn gestures on and off as needed. It's a quick launcher that's also getting quick updates, so look forward to more optimizations and tweaks to help speed up your launcher experience.

Read more: Evie Launcher review

Download Evie Launcher (Free)

Runner-up: Arrow Launcher

You'd think that if Microsoft was going to bring a launcher to Android it'd be a launcher that matches the launcher on Windows Phone… and you'd be wrong. Arrow Launcher doesn't look a thing like Windows Phone, and if you didn't see the login prompts for OneDrive when you try to back up Arrow Launcher, you'd probably never guess it was one of its products.

Arrow Launcher is a browser that's centered around a clean home screen, an orderly utility page for widgets and cards, and a speedy app drawer where you can easily find your apps. Arrow is easy to set up and a breeze to navigate. It's not quite as bare-bones as Evie, but it is a light launcher that's well-worth considering, especially if you have an Outlook account for work or school that it can tie into for email and calendar appointments.

Best customization launchers

Do you want full control over your home screens? Want to set more than just an app grid and a widget or two? Want to make your home screen look and act the way you want? Then you want a customization-based launcher. Often called theming launchers because theming is one of their more obvious uses, these launchers are for far more than just making your home screen look pretty; they're for making your home screen function more efficiently and more effectively for your life.

By giving you control over gestures, advanced UI controls, and almost every aspect of your launcher experience, these launchers let you customize the way you interact with your phone in ways that truly exemplify the Android experience. These two customization-based launchers dominate much of the third-party launcher market, and there's a very good reason: they're awesome.

Recently, both of our best customization launchers began offering companion apps to add a Google Now pane to your home screen. The implementation is fairly stable and straightforward on both versions, but be warned that the addictive Quickdrawer and Google Now pane are mutually exclusive on Action Launcher for now.

Best customization launcher: Nova Launcher

Nova Launcher is over 5 years old, and this storied launcher has been a major player in the Android launcher market longer than most of us have used Android. The reason for this continued dominance is simple: Nova's mix of customization, convenience, and cunning are unparalleled. Nova lets your phone look more Pixel-y than a Pixel and more TouchWiz than a Galaxy S8 and does it with ease and grace. In fact, Nova's biggest strengths are things that are hidden in plain sight, like its pocket ace Subgrid Positioning or its excellent backup system.

When we build themes for our Android Central readers, 9 times out of 10 the launcher we use to build it and to share it with you is Nova Launcher. It's an excellent launcher if you want to build complex themes or if you just want a smartly laid out launcher with excellent gesture controls.

Read more: Nova Launcher review: Still king of the mountain

Download Nova Launcher (Free, $4.99)

Runner-up: Action Launcher

Action Launcher is one of the most popular launchers on the market, and the watchword of both the launcher and its users is QUICK. Quicktheme, Quickdrawer, Quickpage, Quickbar, quick, quick, quick. Action Launcher is determined to be a launcher that gets what you need doing quickly so that you can get back to doing what really matters on your phone: wasting hours on gaming and Netflix. To ensure that Action Launcher can be the quickest and best launcher for users who want to set everything up just so, Action Launcher has taken it upon itself to be one of the most customizable launchers on the market, from its robust gesture controls to its ubiquitous Covers and Shutters to hide folders and widgets under a seemingly plain looking app shortcut. Action Launcher is also quick to support features from the newest version of Android, including Adaptive Icons, Notification Previews, and App Shortcuts.

There's a reason it's the only launcher Phil uses (miss you, Modern Dad!), and that's that Action Launcher is damn good at what it does. While it's not quite as intense as Nova Launcher, it's a launcher that's incredibly... well, quick about getting you set up and on your way.

Best smart launchers

Tired of having to tell your launcher where you want everything? Want a launcher that will learn which apps you like and use more and put them at your fingertips? Want a launcher that knows where you are, what you're doing, and wants to help? You're looking for a smarter launcher, and luckily we've got some launchers that are looking to learn from you and bring the most intelligent launcher experience they can to your phone.

Best smart launcher: Yahoo Aviate Launcher

Yahoo bought its way into the launcher game with Yahoo Aviate Launcher years ago, and the launcher's done fairly well since its acquisition. Aviate uses a combination of the Google Now-like Smart Screen and predictive collections to help you find what you want quicker and keep your launcher experience light and quick. Aviate figures out where you are and what time of day it is and serves up relevant collections, so you can better handle those activities. For example, if you plug in your headphones, it offers you quick access to media controls and your favorite music apps.

Aviate excels for having a high amount of polish and minimal maintenance, even though you might lose out on some customizability.

Read more: Aviate Launcher review

Download Aviate (Free)

Runner-up: Smart Launcher 3

Smart Launcher 3 is a lot more customization-based than Aviate, but it's still a launcher with algorithms and intelligence at its core, sorting your app drawer into five categories and putting a search bar at the top of your launcher screens. Smart Launcher 3 has some interesting theming support, including its iconic "Flower" QuickStart layout for the apps on your home screen and its new Icon Pack Studio, but its implementation of widgets and item placement on its home screens keeps us from calling it a true theming launcher.

Smart Launcher 3's real magic come from the app drawer and the search bar, where optimization and search can help you find the apps and information you need quickly and easily. It's also beginning to toy with launcher features from Android Oreo, starting with notification badges!

UK Police Hijack Ads of 74 Pirate Websites, Refuse to Name Them

by Ernesto

cityoflondonpoliceOver the past year City of London Police have been working together with the music and movie industries to tackle sites that provide unauthorized access to copyrighted content.

The police started by sending warning letters to site owners, asking them to go legit or shut down. Late last year this was followed by a campaign targeted at domain registrars, asking them to suspend the domain names of several so-called pirate sites.

Two weeks ago police began the latest initiative in “Operation Creative,” a partnership with online advertising companies to replace ads on suspected pirate sites with police banners. The banners in question inform users that the site they’re browsing has been reported to the authorities.

Police banner
pipcu-ad-mp3

Until now little was known about the scope of the anti-piracy initiative, but a Freedom of Information (FOI) request TorrentFreak sent to the police reveals some additional details.

In total, 74 domain names are being targeted by the advertisement hijacking effort. All of these domains have been reported to the police by copyright holder groups. Unfortunately, however, our request to get a full list of the affected domains was rejected.

While the police recognize that the public has a legitimate interest in knowing which sites are being targeted, it believes that the possible negative consequences of the disclosure weigh stronger. They fear that the list of domains could prove useful to pirates and increase traffic to the sites in question.

“This is an ongoing investigation and disclosure to the public domain would raise the profile of those sites unlawfully providing copyright material. This would enable individuals to visit the sites highlighted and unlawfully download copyright material and increase the scale of the loss,” City of London Police inform us.

The FOI request further reveals that 83 advertising companies are currently participating in the effort to target ads on pirate sites. All these companies are UK-based or have a UK office, but many are multinationals and have a presence in the US and elsewhere too.

As with the domain names, the police also refused to share the names of their advertising company partners. The police fear that publishing the names of the companies could result in cyber-attacks.

“In the case of advertisers, public identification would increase the risk of harm to them by way of cyber attack or other means,” TorrentFreak was told.

A FOI request TorrentFreak sent previously also revealed more details on the other “Operation Creative” efforts. It showed that City of London Police has warned 107 websites since its launch last year, and sent out suspension requests for 75 domain names.

The domain name suspension efforts were not particularly effective as only five of these were granted. The other 70 requests were denied by domain registrars.

Whether the ad hijacking campaign will have much effect is doubtful too. Thus far there haven’t been any reports from users who have spotted these warning banners in the wild.

by Arielle Duhaime-Ross

Imagine a plane that can fly over large areas of land while identifying hidden stockpiles of drugs or explosives — that's the idea driving the development of remote laser sensing technologies. But until recently that goal had really only been achieved over short distances. Now, a new study, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, brings us that much closer to chemical-detecting planes, as researchers were able to use a single shot of laser light to detect individual chemicals located 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away.

Immunicity Resurrected by Anti-Censorship Supporters

by Ernesto

censorshipWhen Immunicity launched last year TorrentFreak spoke with the owner, who told us he created the service as a protest against increasing censorship efforts in the UK.

“We are angered by the censorship that is happening in the UK and in other countries across the globe, so we got our thinking caps on and decided to do something about it,” Immunicity’s operator said.

The site’s core motivation came from the famous John Gilmore quote that was prominently placed on the site’s homepage. “The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.” And that was exactly what the service offered.

Those who set up their browser to work with Immunicity would gain access to blocked sites, by running their traffic through its proxy server. In just a few clicks the service was able to unblock any censored site, hassle free.

For more than a year Immunicity helped tens of thousands of people to unblock censored websites, but that was brought to an end last week. Tipped off by copyright holders, City of London Police labeled Immunicity a criminal operation and arrested its 20-year old owner.

The idea behind the police action was to send a deterrent message and make it harder for the public to access blocked sites. However, it appears to have resulted in just the opposite.

Just days after the original Immunicity site was taken offline at least two clones have appeared. Both Immunicity.co.uk and Immun.es offer the same unblocking functionality, completely free of charge.

The two new services are a direct result of the Immunicity takedown, once again showing that censorship enforcement may lead to counterproductive results. TorrentFreak spoke with the operator of Immum.es who, considering recent events, has taken the necessary precautions to stay out of police sight.

“When purchasing the domain and server I made steps to protect myself from potential adversaries,” the operator says.

Immun.es uses a hosting service that allows proxies and has unmetered bandwidth, which should guarantee smooth sailing in the short run. The operator informs us that the backend is coded in node.js, which he may release as open source later.

The end result is that the actions of City of London Police have made matters worse, from their own perspective. Instead of one Immunicity, there are now two, and possible many more to come in the future.

The last skybridges of New York City

by Ellis Hamburger

The Fifth Element isn't just a movie about the future. It's a movie about New York, and what happens when the world's largest city can't grow outwards anymore and has to grow up. Roads aren't just roads, they're mid-air capillaries where cars movie like fish from point A to point B. As fanciful as traveling by flying car may seem, walking is still in fashion, and lengthy "skybridges" connect one building to another. Our dreams of building similar skybridges are mostly dead — but a few still exist peppered across New York City. Scouting NY has found them all, and has put together a nice collection of photos you should definitely check out.

Turning standard first-person footage into hyperlapse

by Rob Beschizza

Johannes Kopf: "We present a method for converting first-person videos, for example, captured with a helmet camera during activities such as rock climbing or bicycling, into hyperlapse videos: time-lapse videos with a smoothly moving camera."

Astounding results from relatively low-quality sources. (previously)

CBS to make direct-to-internet TV shows for services like Netflix and Amazon

by Dante D'Orazio

The next hit original series on Netflix might be made by CBS. Network CEO Les Moonves revealed on an earnings call this week that CBS Studios is working on developing original television series solely for streaming video services.

CBS Studios primarily sells to CBS' own channels and is known for such shows as NCIS, but nothing prevents it from producing series for other networks. In fact, one of ABC's new shows this season, called The Club, is made by CBS Television Studios.

Streaming services need networks, and vice-versa

Television networks and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon are often cast as fierce competitors, but the two rely on each other greatly: studios earn big revenues by selling streaming rights to companies...

Five Best Laptop Bags

by Alan Henry

Five Best Laptop Bags

Finding the perfect laptop bag is no easy task. Some of us use whatever we got with the laptop, others spend hundreds on the perfect bag. This week, we asked you for the best, and out of dozens of great options, we're looking at the top five based on your nominations.

Whether it's a backpack or a messenger, a diagonal strap or a briefcase, we asked you for your favorite laptop bags earlier this week and you responded with tons. Seriously, you nominated close to a hundred different, great bags, and they were all great. Even so, we could only pick five to highlight here, and there were some nominees that rose to the top. Here they are, in no particular order.

Timbuk2 Commute/Command

Five Best Laptop Bags

The Command and Commute by Timbuk2 both could have had their own entries in the top five, but we put them together since they're from the same folks, and they're very similar in build and design. Both bags are designed to take whatever you throw at them, whether it's airline travel (the current iteration of both the Commute and Command are TSA-compliant), bike rides to work, commutes in the car, or walking around town. They're both available in three sizes to accommodate any size laptop (or person), feature easy-clean TPU liners, and soft padded sleeves to protect your laptop. Both can be worn as messengers or briefcases, and include a number of extras to give you easy access to water bottles, keys, and other accessories without digging through your bag. The Commute is a classic, featuring a waterproof flap, heavy velcro closures, and hard-snap buckles that keep your bag closed tight, without sacrificing internal pockets and sleeves for pens, phones, power bricks, cables, and other accessories. The Command on the other hand is a little lighter and features Timbuk2's silent open and close system so you can get in and out quickly. You also have easy side access if you need something, a front organizer, metal fasteners on the front, separate sleeves for laptops and tablets, and even a pass-through for easy carry on rolling luggage.

Both models earned a ton of praise in the call for contenders thread. Full disclosure, I nominated the Commute because I have one, and like many of you, it's lasted me so long that while I'd love to buy another or try a Command, I can't justify the purchase because the bag is so well built. Almost every testimonial in the thread as positive, and you all praised both bags' build quality, and sturdiness, especially at the price. The Command will set you back between $129-$149 (before accessories and customizations), and the Commute will set you back between $109-$129. You can read more about the Commute in its nomination thread here, and more about the Command in its nomination thread here.

The ThinkGeek Bag of Holding

Five Best Laptop Bags

ThinkGeek's carried the Bag of Holding for ages, and sure enough, it's a messenger that you might actually think is bigger on the inside. What started as an old D&D pun has turned into a well-regarded and well-recognized messenger that has space for a laptop up to 17", can be purchased as a messenger or a backpack (the backpack is relatively new), and is built of solid weather-resistant canvas that's soft enough to not be a pain to open, but rugged enough to take a beating. All of the zippers are brass and close tightly without slipping open, and the riveted fixtures both look great and keep the flap shut. The laptop compartment itself is padded to keep your laptop safe, but in addition to the laptop compartment there are also two more compartments next to it, a velcro pocket in front of that, and a zippered compartment right on the flap for essentials you need quick access to. You can grab measurements for each of the compartments over at ThinkGeek's site, but speaking as someone who's been hands-on with one of these before, you won't have trouble fitting all of your stuff into it.

In the nominations thread, you also shared the enthusiasm for both the Bag of Holding's name and its incredible storage—the size is great, but even though it has a lot of space, it doesn't have a ton of discrete sleeves and pockets for accessories (We'd suggest you pick up a Grid-It organizer. These bags are perfect for them.) Some of you pointed out that the Bag of Holding is sturdy, long-lasting, and one of your noted you've had yours for well over five years and it's still going strong. If you'd like one, you can pick it direct from ThinkGeek for $50. Read more in its nomination thread here.

Mission Workshop Sanction

Five Best Laptop Bags

The Sanction rucksack from Mission Workshop is a 20-liter carry-all that's waterproof, long across your back and comfortable to wear for long periods, stylish, and doesn't skimp on the space and organizational tricks inside to to keep all of your gear safe and neatly arranged. We mentioned that it's waterproof, but even some of the internal sleeves and pockets are also waterproof or weatherproof, and sport urethane coated zippers so nothing gets in. It features a large internal frame sheet to help it keep its shape as you wear it on your back, and if you're worried that such a large backpack won't have a sleeve for your laptop, you'd be wrong. There's a large internal zippered pocket that supports just about any size laptop nicely. The double clasp on the back makes sure your bag is secure whether you're on the train or on a bike, and the pocket on the back gives you quick access to essentials.

The Sanction earned your praise in the nominations thread for being an incredibly weatherproof bag—in fact, reader cjammet, who nominated it, noted he'd been in monsoons with the thing and carried sensitive equipment like a DSLR inside. Sure enough, everything stayed dry. If you're interested in one, you can snag one for $189 direct from Mission Workshop, complete with a lifetime warranty. Read more about it in its nomination thread here.

Strellson Messenger Bag "Hunter"

Five Best Laptop Bags

Swiss company Strellson's bags are definitely high fashion, but they're also built to last. The link above goes directly to their site (and is in German), but you can buy their bags direct, from eBay, from a store if there's one near you, or from a third party like Wardow's collection. That said, the Hunter series of leather briefcase/messenger bags from Strellow are made entirely of high-quality, water-resistant vintage-styled leather. The bags come in multiple sizes to accommodate different body types (and laptops or tablets inside), and features double closures with one loop closure at the front and Velcro strips to keep the flap secured. Polished metal clasps keep everything closed, and Each Hunter also packs tons of pockets inside for files, organizers, pens and notebooks, keys, phones, and other accessories. There's a padded laptop sleeve as well that can accommodate between a 13" and 17" laptop, depending on the size you buy.

Finding a Hunter may be tricky, but those of you who praised the nomination liked a bag that functions just as well as a briefcase as it does a messenger, and doesn't look amateurish in either case. The Hunter can be worn over or across the shoulder or carried by hand via the hand-strap. In the nominations thread, you praised its all-leather build, and the fact that as the leather weathers over time, the bag still looks great. If you don't like the all-brown leather, there are black options available too. They'll set you back between €169.00 (~ $227 USD) to €189.00 (~$254 USD) depending on the model you get and where you can find them. Read more in its nomination thread here.

Waterfield Designs Staad Laptop Backpack

Five Best Laptop Bags

The Staad Laptop Backpack from Waterfield Designs (aka SFBags.com) comes in both "slim" and "stout" models depending on how much you need to carry, but both feature plenty of space to carry a notebook up to 15" with room to spare for accessories and peripherals. You can choose tan waxed-canvas or black ballistic for the body of the bag, and black, chocolate or "grizzly" leather for the flap. If you're looking for a backpack that you can wear in an office environment that doesn't look like you just got out of the classroom, this is one worth a look. it's weather-resistant, and the center zipper pulls down a bit to give you access to both the laptop and discrete tablet sleeves, along with the main enclosure and twin diagonal pockets for smaller items like power bricks, phones, cameras, and other items.

In the nominations thread, you highlighted the fact that the Staad was a good-looking backpack, perhaps even moreso in person than in pictures, well designed, and made of premium materials. If you're interested in one, you'll drop $319 for the slim model, and $329 for the stout model. Read more in its nomination thread here.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to an all out vote to decide the Lifehacker community favorite.

There were plenty of contenders to choose from in this week's honorable mentions, but some of the most notable were the Deuter Giga Flat, the Deuter Giga Office, and the North Face Surge II Backpack. The Deuter Giga Flat and Deuter Giga Office are both affordable models, ranging between $70-$80 depending on the models you want. They're both backpacks, designed for both everyday carryall use and rugged outdoors use, and are water resistant. The Giga Flat is built for business use to carry laptops and tablets in its all-around padded rear compartment and files, accessories, and other items its front organizer pockets. It even has a special valuables pocket that's more concealed than the others, and a sternum strap for long-term wear.

Despite its name, the Giga Office is designed for outdoors and school use, made of a more breathable fabric, features a waterproof pocket to either keep items dry (or isolate wet ones from the rest of the bag), and packs a front laptop accessory pocket specifically to cut down on cable clutter. There's a huge laptop compartment in the Giga Flat as well, along with a sternum strap and an optional waist strap for long-term comfort. It even has side compression straps and an external water bottle stretch pocket.

The North Face Surge II is a carryall backpack that can carry whatever you need it to in slim style. It'll set you back $130, but for your money you get a selection of color and material, a huge laptop compartment that can support a 17" laptop if you need it to, breathable shoulder straps, a padded, stowable hipbelt and a sternum strap, and a breathable back pad. It's made of ballistics nylon, and is TSA-compliant.

Want to make the case for your personal favorite, even if it wasn't included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most popular nominations from the call for contenders thread earlier in the week. Don't just complain about the top five, let us know what your preferred alternative is—and make your case for it—in the discussions below.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!
