Gaza Backtrack, Trans Sports Ban, Garden of American Heroes | Ke Huy Quan

Tom Roche

Mixed (but listenworthy) bag:

- the ads are back, reactivate fast-forward fingers
+ funny Lydic/host bits
+ amusing "debate" on Trump's proposed "National Garden of American Heroes"
++ another EXCELLENT political comment from Charlamagne ...
-- ... followed by another skippable interview, so bail @ 22:33

Desi Lydic covers Trump's latest executive actions, including a combination walk back/double-down on his Gaza plan, and a ban on trans athletes that he probably didn't proofread.

Ronny Chieng and Josh Johnson debate which Americans are statue-worthy in the "National Garden of American Heroes."

Charlamagne Tha God begs Dems & Republicans to stand up against Elon Musk.

“Love Hurts” actor Ke Huy Quan joins to discuss his upcoming action flick that’s like “‘Die Hard’ for hopeless romantics.” The Oscar-winning actor shares why his character represents a different type of action star, whether co-star Marshawn Lynch went full “beast mode” on him, and his tearful onscreen reunion with “Goonies” co-star Sean Astin.

Tom Roche

odd, interesting ... important? not sure

Danny and Derek speak with Lydia Walker, historian at Ohio State University, about her book States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization. The group discusses narratives of decolonization that Lydia wanted to challenge before exploring the “transnational advocacy network” and non-state actors she features in the book like Naga nationalist leader Angami Zapu Phizo, Indian politician Jayaprakash Narayan, anti-apartheid minister Michael Scott, the latter two’s World Peace Brigade and “anti-Algiers” initiative, and more.

How Thiel, Musk, and Other Tech Billionaires Bought the Liberal Media / Eoin Higgins

Tom Roche

SKIP! Despite the title, although there is /some/ examination of the roles of Thiel and (esp) Musk in the current USCFM (corporate-funded media), this interview (11:43-78:17 in the audio) is overwhelmingly a hit on Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi for "being conservative" ... and Higgins' argument for that claim is both surprisingly weak (G&T publish on rightwing-owned platforms, therefore are rightwing) and utterly schematic (based on the brainbreaking right-left binary, which I very much gotta write about at length). Mix in some suggestion (by Higgins, but surprisingly no pushback from host Chuck Mertz) that the oldschool mass-oriented mainstream USCFM was actually ... kinda good ... and you've got a totally-trashable episode.

Journalist and historian Eoin Higgins, author of the new book, "Owned: How Tech Billionaires on the Right Bought the Loudest Voices on the Left." Irreal: Elisp To Python Cheatsheat

by Irreal
Tom Roche

see [/Elisp Cheatsheet for Python Programmers/](https://github.com/kickingvegas/elisp-for-python)

Irreal has often commented on the work of Charles Choi, most recently on his Casual App Suite. Choi has just published a nice cheatsheet for Python programmers who want to write in Elisp. The idea is to compare the various Python data structures and their Elisp analogs and to show the various functions for acting on them.

The idea is to allow Python programmers to more or less bootstrap their Python knowledge to write Elisp. I used to write a bit in Python but that was some time ago. I’d be more inclined to use Choi’s cheatsheet in reverse and use it to translate Elisp idioms into Python.

In any event, the cheatsheet should be useful for those of you who want to move from one language to the other. I have always felt (and said) that Elisp is a very simple language but that the hard part was mastering the library functions. Choi’s cheatsheet helps with this by relating the Elisp functions to those of a language you may be more familiar with. If you’re interested in learning Elisp, it’s a nice resource to have.

Trump's tariffs could cause huge global crisis, warns economist Michael Hudson

Tom Roche

Michael Hudson + Ben Norton == reliably VERY EXCELLENT geoeconomic analysis, in this case esp regarding the very-bad, no-good interactions of

- trade balances esp tariffs
- currency values esp dollar/USD
- USD-dominated financial order esp USD-denominated debt
- financialized oligarchs demand stable- and high-value imperial currency (i.e., USD)

Funny bits (1st half, pre 16:45), bad interview (bail @ 16:45), no ads

International Fugitive Benjamin Netanyahu Goes to Washington

by Jeremy Scahill
Tom Roche

EXCELLENT, but note this is pre Trump's "US must own Gaza" shpiel

Israeli prime minister and international fugitive Benjamin Netanyahu is the first foreign leader to be hosted in Washington, D.C., by President Donald Trump. They are meeting in the wake of a barrage of chaotic and conflicting messages by Trump on what he believes should happen in Gaza and the West Bank.

Without a doubt, Trump wants to preside over a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel, though the Saudis have said they will not enter into such a deal without a credible process to create an independent Palestinian state. Israeli officials have made clear Netanyahu wants to push Trump to fully embrace his position that Hamas should be wiped out completely and there are indications the Israeli leader does not want the so-called ceasefire to move to the second phase—which envisions a withdrawal of Israeli forces, further exchange of captives and discussions on a large reconstruction plan for Gaza—or toward an actual rebuilding of Gaza.

All of this happens as Palestinians continue to return to an apocalyptic scene in the north of the Gaza Strip and Israel continues to intensify its attacks against the West Bank. Mouin Rabbani and Dr. Annelle Sheline join Jeremy Scahill to discuss. Mouin Rabbani is the co-editor of Jadaliyya and non-resident fellow at both DAWN and Middle East Council on Global Affairs, and a former UN official who worked as a special adviser on Israel-Palestine for the International Crisis Group. Dr. Annelle Sheline is a research fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute. She served as a foreign affairs officer at the U.S. Department of State until resigning in March 2024 over the Biden administration's Gaza policy.

Topics covered include: online Gaza-war military content, why IM has so far failed in Gaza, PM {tunnels, training, logistics, weapons, organization}, comparing Lebanon and Gaza wars (esp Hezbollah/IM vs PM/IM), Gaza ceasefire {to-date, nominal/potential outcomes, probable outcomes}, and What Is To Be Done (notably, prosecute Zionist war criminals)

Episode 317 - The Byzantine Legacy with David Hendrix

What I mean: this ep (aside from ads before and after the content) is about this guy Hendrix: his {background, origin story}, the content he produces, and other services he provides. There /is/ minor, touristy, content about Byzantine sites in the last 3rd of the audio, but it's very skippable.

The paperboy has been laid off, but fear not, for Danny and Derek are here with the headlines. This week: in Israel-Palestine, detainees were exchanged on Thursday (0:31), the IDF continues its operation in the West Bank (6:05), an update on the humanitarian situation in Gaza (7:40), and Trump proposes the idea of ethnically cleansing the Strip (10:34); in Lebanon, the IDF ignores its withdrawal deadline (15:02); in Syria, the political transition continues (17:00), the IDF remains in the country’s south (19:04), and negotiations with Russia are underway over its bases in Syria as well as the fate of Bashar al-Assad (20:32); the rollout of China’s DeepSeek AI roils tech stocks (23:00); the Sudanese army sees a string of military successes around Khartoum (25:24); in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the M23 military group takes Goma while advancing south (27:59); Putin comments on peace talks regarding Ukraine (32:43); Colombia and the US get into a spat regarding deportation flights (34:12); and in US news, arms sales hit a new record in 2024 (37:16), Donald Trump vows to build a migrant detention facility at Guantánamo (38:20), and some details on the effects of his foreign aid freeze (39:35).

Trump Blames Plane Crash on DEI, Lewis Black on Dry January | Vince Beiser

amusing: subpar but not bad

Michael Kosta on the tragic Washington D.C. plane crash and Trump's baseless blame of DEI for the catastrophe. Plus, the Best F**kin' News team breaks down which of Trump's nominees was least qualified at their Senate hearings.

Lewis Black Celebrates the End of Dry January and Other Ridiculous Drinking Trends

Journalist and author Vince Beiser sits down to discuss the paradox of electric vehicles and renewable energy in his latest book "Power Metal: The Race for the Resources That Will Shape the Future." They talk about how preventing climate change has led to a rush for “critical” metals, how China has dominated the field of mining and manufacturing, the minerals and metals behind Trump’s Greenland obsession, recycling electronic waste, and the importance of reusing and repairing gadgets.

904 - Flight Risk (1/30/25)

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT, funny Amber+Felix+Will in 2 main parts:

1. US politics and culture, mostly Trump2's 1st-week chaos and how CorpDems are bungling this gift
2. movie night: itself a 2-parter on 2 very-recent "tight 90" action flix, in order of perceived (by A+F+G) importance:

2.1. new Mel Gibson movie /Flight Risk/: competent, with bright spots (e.g. Wahlberg sideburns)

2.2. instaclassic /Den of Thieves 2: Pantera/ as big-boy heist movie featuring Gerard Butler as Big Nick (channeling [[http://web.archive.org/web/20241224192025/https://genius.com/albums/Plummcorp-records/Dracula-flow][Dracula Flow]]

We continue reviewing the stream of chaos coming from the White House - federal spending freeze/unfreeze, deportation of protestors, responses to the “DEI” aviation disaster - and try to discern if this now-familiar Trump pattern of overreach & retreat will be any different this time around. RFK Jr.’s Fiery Hearing, Rethinking Social Media | Filmmaker Rachel Mason

Kosta on RFKJr == funny. After that, this DSEE ep gets quite marginal

Michael Kosta tackles RFK Jr.'s confirmation hearing for health secretary, his questionable stances on vaccines and AIDS, and Bernie Sanders's onesie interrogation.

The polio virus (Troy Iwata) shares his excitement about returning to work.

Grace Kuhlenschmidt asks New Yorkers if they will finally delete their apps now that Trump-aligned billionaires run various social media platforms,

Filmmaker Rachel Mason sits down to discuss her new Max docuseries, “An Update on Our Family.” She explains what attracted her to the story of popular YouTube vloggers who shared their overseas adoption online, the ethics of profiting off your children via content, and how she navigates oversharing on her own social media accounts.

Erik L. Arneson: Configuring Orgzly Interaction with Directory Local Variables

by Erik L. Arneson

I use Orgzly Revived on my phone to capture to-do items, tasks, writing ideas, and projects. Its files are then synced with an ownCloud server. Those same files are also constantly open in Emacs on my computer, which means there can be some gnarly issues with things getting out of sync. It took me a while to figure out a good way to manage this, and in this brief blog post, I would like to share my solution.

Setting up a remote storage system is outside the scope of this server. Orgzly Revived works well with Dropbox, ownCloud, and nextCloud, though support for the other two is nicer as it can support automatic syncing in more situations. The Orgzly Revived documentation has an excellent description of how that configuration works.

Note that to keep things simple, I keep my Orgzly Revived files and only those files in a directory on my remote server. On my computer, the location for these files is ~/org/orgzly/, which is how I shall refer to it later on.

Configuring Orgzly Revived Auto-sync

To configure the auto-sync capabilities in Orgzly Revived, go to the settings screen in the app and then navigate to Sync > Auto-sync. Ensure that the following options are toggled on:

  • Auto-sync
  • Note created
  • Note updated or deleted
  • App started or resumed

This ensures that Orgzly Revived is constantly checking your remote storage and both fetching and uploading changes.

Configuring Emacs and Org-mode

On my computer, I want any changes that Orgzly Revived has updated to be automatically loaded into Emacs. Since I always leave Emacs running, that means it needs to detect changes on the disk for those particular files. I use two different methods to do this. First, in my init file, I have the following piece of code:

(setq orgzly-directory (expand-file-name "~/org/orgzly/"))
(add-to-list 'revert-without-query (rx bol
                                       (eval orgzly-directory)
                                       (+ (not "/")) ".org"
                                       eol))

This uses the rx macro to easily create a regular expression that matches any filename ending in ".org" in the directory containing Orgzly Revived files. You may need to play around with the regular expression to get the right match. By adding those files to revert-without-query, Emacs will not bug you with extra questions and confirmations when changes are detected. However, this only works when auto-revert-mode is enabled!

At first, I thought there may be a way to enable auto-revert-mode on a file-by-file basis, but quickly realized that this could cause too many problems with creating new files in the Orgzly Revived app. Eventually, I realized that the solution would be to make a .dir-locals.el file in ~/org/orgzly/. Open that file in Emacs, and stick the following in it.

((nil . ((eval . (auto-revert-mode 1)))))

That ensures that any file in that directory will have auto-revert-mode enabled.
