Art of the Day: Björk Has a Chest Vagina in New Album Cover

Icelandic singer Björk unveiled the physical cover of her new album “Vulnicura” on Facebook Tuesday, and it’s… exactly what you would expect from Björk.
The image, which depicts her bending over backwards with a gaping hole in her chest was created in collaboration with L.A.-based artist Andrew Thomas Huang.
She says “Vulnicua” was inspired by a breakup, which she discussed at the time of its release.
I guess I found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album. Kinda surprised how thoroughly I had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology… like 3 songs before a break up and three after. So the anthropologist in me sneaked in and I decided to share them as such. First I was worried it would be too self indulgent but then I felt it might make it even more universal. And hopefully the songs could be a help, a crutch to others and prove how biological this process is: the wound and the healing of the wound. Psychologically and physically. It has a stubborn clock attached to it. There is a way out.
In addition to the album, the Museum of Modern Art in New York is hosting a Björk retrospective which runs March 8 – June 7.
The exhibit includes a sound and video installation based around her single “Black Lake,” and the museum released an equally bizarre/haunting teaser a few weeks ago, which you can watch here.
And this is the digital cover that was released when the album launched on iTunes last month for comparison:

This Is The Best Video Of A Guy Using A Power Tool To Eat A Bagel That You’ll See Today
In what I must admit I first thought was another one of those videos showing a trick to doing something that I could then repeat and tell everyone I know about, in “You’ve been eating bagels wrong your whole life” on YouTube, a mute bagel lover goes through a pantomime showing the frustrations of having to cut a bagel in two and smear cream cheese on both sides.
Knives can be annoying, I guess, though some people use those bagel slicing things. And what about all that bread that isn’t on the surface and thus, will never feel the blanket of cream cheese upon its crumbs?
That’s where the power drill comes in (which we do not advise using on bagels). And subsequently, a few other steps that I wouldn’t recommend any sane person follow, though it does make for an amusing video break to the day.
The lesson here, I think? Not everything has to have a shortcut — sometimes the way to do something is just the way to do something.

Curiosity Rover Discovers Mars’ True Colors; Red Planet Is Actually Blue
Mars Curiosity rover may have just uncovered one of the most intriguing facts about our neighbor planet. Just a few days ago, during one of the rover’s drilling missions, the robot didn’t expect to discover an incredible secret hiding underneath Mars’ surface.
It turns out, the “red planet” might not be red after all. A few inches into the Martian ground, Curiosity rover discovers that the color of the soil underneath Mars’ iron-rich surface is actually greyish-blue. More intriguing than the color of #thedress, isn’t it?
According to Science Alert, the rover was at Telegraph Peak digging for samples to be sent to its on-board laboratory when it made the amazing find. NASA recently released the image of the drill site, which clearly showed the pastel color of the soil underneath Mars’ red surface. With it was an explanation from scientists detailing the striking differences in the chemical make-up of the soil above and below Mars.
“When you graph the ratios of silica to magnesium and silica to aluminium, ‘Telegraph Peak’ is toward the end of the range we’ve seen. It’s what you would expect if there has been some acidic leaching. We want to see what minerals are present where we found this chemistry.”
The purpose of the dig is to find out how Mars — hypothesized to have looked similar to Earth millions of years ago — became the dry and arid environment that it is today. Samples from the ground can potentially reveal much about the planet’s history and may also give hints on possible life on Mars.
Last year, Mars Curiosity rover was able to detect a sudden rise in the amount of methane in the martian atmosphere, something that has not been observed by NASA before. According to a report by the Inquisitr, a few experts are considering this to be one of the most convincing evidences of microbial life currently living in Mars. However, most scientists remain conservative about the idea and are still studying other causes that can account for the sudden surge in methane levels.
Paul Mahaffy, a NASA scientist for the Goddard Space Flight Center, commented on the Curiosity rover methane discovery, “Right now, it’s too much of a single-point measurement for us really to jump to any conclusions. So all we can really do is lay out the possibilities. And we certainly should have an open mind. Maybe there are microbes on Mars cranking out methane, but we sure can’t say that with any certainty. It’s just speculation at this point.”
Mars Curiosity rover will be the basis for a new NASA robot design planned for launch in 2020.

Origami Busts a Move with Dancing Paper
Origami cranes are cool, but do you know what’s cooler? Origami cranes dancing to the beat. That’s the challenge [Basami Sentaku] took on when he created Dancing Paper (YouTube link). You might remember [Basami] from his 8 bit harmonica hack. In Dancing Paper, paper cranes seem to dance all on their own – even performing some crazy spinning moves. Of course, the “magic” is due to some carefully written code, and magnets, lots of magnets.
Using magnets to move objects from below isn’t a new concept. Many of us have seen the “ice skating pond” Christmas decoration which uses the same effect. Unlike the skating pond,Dancing Paper has moving parts (other than the cranes themselves). Under the plastic surface are a series of individually controlled electromagnets. Each of the supporting dancers has a line of four magnets, while the featured dancer in the center has a 5×5 matrix. The 41 electromagnets were wound around bolts with the help of a Tamiya motor and gearbox.
The actual dance moves are controlled by C code which appears to be running on an Atmel microcontroller. Of course a microcontroller wouldn’t be able to drive those big coils, so some beefy TO-220 case transistors were employed to switch the loads. The cranes themselves needed a bit of modification as well. Thin pieces of wire travel from the neodymium magnets on their feet up to the body of the crane. The wire provides just enough support to keep the paper from collapsing, while still being flexible enough to boogie down.
