We’re Totally Unsurprised That Paula “Put A Glob Of Butter On It” Deen Has Her Own Butter Brand

by Mary Beth Quirk
They go together like, well, Paula Deen and butter.

They go together like, well, Paula Deen and butter.

Here’s the thing about Paula Deen: Anyone who’s watched her cooking on TV knows that the woman loves, and we mean loves to add dabs, globs and ginormous pats of butter to many of her recipes. So while we were momentarily confused by her paid endorsement of a diabetes management program, she’s back to doing what she does best — butter, by way of slapping her face and name on her very own butter brand to be sold at Walmart.

We welcome you back, Paula, to your true self, and that is in no way sarcasm. If you’re going to position yourself as a healthy, diet-conscious cook and then you come out with a product like butter, well, that’s weird. But Deen has made her way up through the ranks of celebuchefs on the calorie-laden, butter-filled recipes she loves best, so this is a natural progression.

But wait, this isn’t just regular butter, points out Eater — it’s something called “finishing butter.” Ostensibly, that would mean you’ve got a starter butter, a middle butter and then at the end, more butter.

Deen says these butters ”let cooks bring a wonderful fresh butter taste to various dishes while just adding butter to the end of the cooking process,” and they come in five flavors, y’all: Southern Grillin’Butter, The Lemon Dill Butter, The European Style Butter, Sweet Citrus Zest Butter and Garden Herb Butter .

She made the talk show circuit yesterday, using butter at the end of the recipe instead of sticking it in at the beginning, because as she said on Today: ”I know you’re going to find this heard to believe, but I’ve been trying to cook with less butter…I’m trying not to use butter during the cooking process. I wait til the end, and then I put the finishing butter on it.”

That being said, butter is butter, no matter how, when or where you stick it. So embrace the butter, Paula. We can buy that a lot easier than you as a “healthy” cook.

Hands-on with Meta 1, a 3D augmented reality headset with a natural UI (video)

by Michael Gorman

Handson with Meta1, an 3D augmented reality headset with a natural UI video

Augmented reality is the future, or at least the proliferation of AR apps and hardware seems to indicate that'll be the case. Meta revealed its own augmented reality device, called Meta 1, in January and is currently in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign to ramp up manufacturing and get it to the people. If the headset looks familiar, that's because its hardware is: it's comprised, in no small part, of Epson and SoftKinetic gear. It utilizes the 960 x 540 binocular 3D displays from Epson's Moverio glasses and the depth sensor sitting atop them comes from SoftKinetic. Of course the glasses you see are but a first generation and are wired to a battery pack worn around the waist -- the company's currently working on slimming things down with customized eyewear that'll be revealed later this year, however. For now, the dev kit and the still-in-development Unity-based SDK are slated to ship in September, but we got to see some of what Meta 1 can do a bit early.

Multipurpose: Functional Glass Bong Electric Guitar

glass-guitar-bong-1.jpg This is the functional glass bubbler electric guitar constructed by glassblower Nate Dizzle. You smell that? Smells like a JAM SESSION. Plus herb. It smells like herb. You trying to get high? Because I'm trying to get high AND NEVER COME DOWN. You know what I'm saying? I'm saying let's blast off in a rocketship and leave this shithole behind. "But can we smoke weed?" WHAT -- and risk setting off the ship's emergency smoke alarms?! We'll have to do it in the bathroom and blow out the vent. Hit the jump for a shot of Nate holding the thing.

Give Your Propane Tank an Ultrasound to Find Out If It's Low

by Andrew Liszewski

Give Your Propane Tank an Ultrasound to Find Out If It's Low

Like when trying to choose a ripe melon at the grocery store, there are countless questionable ways to determine how much propane is left in your barbecue's tank. But if you don't want to drag a bathroom scale out to your deck, try Truma's LevelChecker which uses an ultrasonic signal to determine how full, or empty, your tank is.

You just hold the LevelChecker's tip to the side of your tank, press a button, and it will emit and monitor an ultrasonic blast that tells it if the tank is full or empty in the current location. After a couple of more tests, it's then easy to extrapolate how much propane is left. At just north of $90 it's a little expensive, but far cheaper than the cost of being embarrassed in front of your neighbors when you run out of gas at a BBQ.

Redbox Instant app coming to Roku players this summer

by Richard Lawler

Redbox Instant recently launched on the Google TV platform and today it's officially announcing plans for a Roku channel. Despite its absence from the original list of devices, Redbox mentioned at Google I/O support for the Roku platform would likely be in the cards. Similar to the Google TV launch (and the recent Hulu Plus update) the app won't work on first gen Roku hardware, but once it's available will bring its unique package of subscription streaming / VOD / kiosk DVD & Blu-ray access to the hockey puck streamers. Still, the reports we've heard from early users are mostly mentioning the need for more subscription streaming content, but getting within shouting distance of the likes of Netflix and Amazon won't be easy.

Laser Time Cloak Hides The Fact That An Event Ever Happened

by Shaunacy Ferro
Temporal Cloaking

In the middle of the image, the light intensity goes to zero, creating a cloaking effect.

Lukens et al.

This is the first almost-practical application of temporal cloaking ... but it might work too well.

Electrical engineers at Purdue University have found a way to make your data disappear completely--into holes in time. The technique, described in a paper published online in Nature yesterday, uses pulses of light to create "time holes" that allow communication across optic fibers to disappear completely.

The idea of a data cloak, a way to hide the transfer of data in "time pockets," has existed for a few years, but until now the effect didn't last long and wasn't consistent enough to be of any practical use. This is the first temporal cloak that can work quickly enough to hide data streams in telecommunications systems. It can work to hide up to 46 percent of the window of time it takes to transfer data (one of the first temporal cloaking techniques worked less than one percent of the time, according to a Purdue release).

This cloak works using a wave phenomenon called the Talbot effect. Manipulating the timing of light pulses so that the crest of one light wave interacts with the trough of another creates a zero light intensity--where the two signals cancel each other out--in which data can be hidden.

Right now, author Joseph Lukens, a Purdue graduate student, says the cloaking effect is almost too efficient. "We erased the data-adding event entirely from history, so there's no way that data could be sent as a useful message to anyone, even a genuine recipient," he told Nature. Future tweaking might solve this problem to allow super-secret messages to pass through undetected and still make it to the intended recipient. But maybe they can use the current version to destroy embarrassing emails mid-send?

Cool Down with 3 Fresh Limeade Recipes

by Autumn Giles

From Drinks

We've already had a string of exceptionally hot, humid days here in NYC, so the need for something refreshing and delicious that isn't necessarily boozy is especially acute. Limeade is just different enough that it seems like an impressive addition to a summer picnic lunch or dinner party, but is still ridiculously easy to make from scratch. Here are three fresh takes on limeade that are just as good as the original.

Black Peppercorn Limeade

20130603-254586-black-pepper-limeade.jpg

The humble black peppercorn is totally transformed when steeped in a simple syrup. The taste of the finished product completely caught me off-guard: it's much more spicy than I expected and seriously complex. It may be the summer of black pepper cocktails for me because this stuff goes great with warm-weather fruits like berries and watermelon. Here, in a simple limeade, fresh-squeezed lime juice brings out the bright citrusy notes of the pepper and adds a nice kick.

Watermelon Limeade

20130603-254586-watermelon-limeade-1.jpg

Although spitting seeds and having juice run down your forearms are definitive parts of consuming watermelon, I'd argue that drinking it is a pretty satisfying alternative. Blending chunks of watermelon and giving it a quick strain through cheesecloth yields a sweet liquid that is a perfect foil for tart lime juice. Plus, it's darn pretty, so it makes an easy, but impressive pitcher drink for summer entertaining.

Panela Limeade

20130603-254586-panela-limeade.jpg

Panela, unrefined cane sugar that is often sold in solid discs, has a much more full-bodied flavor than refined sugars. It is similar to molasses, but not quite as robust. It needs to be chopped up and dissolved in hot water before being used in a drink like this limeade so it's just a bit more labor intensive, but the resulting deep, caramely flavor is totally worth it.

Fractional Intelligence, Part 2

by Not Always Right
Fast Food, Restaurant | Jasper, IN, USA

(I work at the drive-thru.)

Me: “Thank you for choosing [restaurant]. How may I help you?”

Customer: “Yes, I would like a 16 piece family meal with two thirds of it fish.”

Me: I’m sorry, ma’am; did you want 10 or 11 fish?”

Customer: “What do mean?”

Me: “Two thirds isn’t a proper fraction to use. It will give you between 10-11 pieces. So how many pieces would you like?”

Customer: “I don’t see how you get those numbers. Just give me 12 fish. Is that a fraction you can figure out?”

Me: “Yes, one 16 piece, 3/4 fish the rest chicken. Is there anything else for you today?”

Customer: “I don’t see the difference between 3/4 and 2/3, but okay.”

This '60s Era Ford Video About Concept Styling Is Inspiring

Sure, it has the oddly leaden pacing of many industrial films of the era, but the animations are charming and it's about concept car styling in arguably the greatest era. Plus, the film suggests sarcophagi inspire stylists, which is a little surprising.

Coke's Latest Cool Innovation: Ice Bottles

by Todd Wasserman
Coke
Feed-twFeed-fb

Coca-Cola, which recently introduced a can that splits in two, is messing with its bottle design as well.

In Colombia, the brand recently rolled out bottles made of ice that, if the video above is to be believed, doesn't result in bottles melting in your hands and frozen liplock. That plus weather and potential health issues may put the kibosh on global expansion. Nevertheless, it's a cool experiment.

A Blu-ray Disc That Lasts 1,000 Years Guarantees Caddyshack Lives On

by Andrew Liszewski

A Blu-ray Disc That Lasts 1,000 Years Guarantees Caddyshack Lives On

They last a lot longer than the tape-based storage of yesteryear, but optical discs, particularly the type you burn at home, aren't guaranteed to survive even a decade. So if you want to pass on that wedding video/vacation photos/copy of Caddyshack to your great-great grand kids, you'll want to opt for Millenniata's new 25GB Blu-ray compatible M-DISCs which are guaranteed to last at least 1,000 years.

The M-DISCs—which burn data onto a more permanent layer made of metals and metalloids instead of organic light-sensitive dyes—have existed as standard DVDs for a few years now. But that provides just a paltry 4.7GB of storage capacity. The new Blu-ray version of course boosts that to 25GB, and although the discs need to be created on an M-DISC compatible burner (many are these days) they can still be played back on a regular Blu-ray player. So it's got that goin' for it, which is nice.

Available in August there's no pricing info on the Blu-ray version of the M-DISCs just yet, but a 10-pack of the DVD versions are about $30, and you can expect the higher capacity versions to be a bit more expensive. But when you break down the per year cost in terms of survival, this is the deal of the century—err millennium. [Millenniata via SlashGear]
