"All expenses paid"
An achingly evocative video posted by Miss Cellania at Neatorama, where a commenter noted that the 792,000 thai bahts are equivalent to about 25,000 USD or 19,000 EUR or 16,000 GBP.
It's also a reminder that the financial problems contingent on life support and major medical catastrophes are not limited to the United States.

SnorkmaidenI didn't much care for the second season (not because it wasn't good, but because I find stuff set in that era, particularly stuff that deals with mental health stuff to be really hard to watch. I'm super interested to see where season 3 goes, though. I can get behind witchy stuff any day.

UPDATES: PESTILENCE, BEHEMOTH, OBLITERATION, AND LUMBAR
SnorkmaidenOh Behemoth.
Collected in this post are a handful of news items I spied earlier today. Unlike most of these daily round-ups, no new music is included (other than a teaser for one band’s new album). But read it anyway, won’t you?
PESTILENCE
We’ve been keeping our eye out for new information about Obsideo, the next album by Pestilence, because for fuck’s sake, it’s Pestilence. Today we all get to see the album cover ,and now we also know the release date (by Candlelight Records in North America): November 11.
Although I’ve seen some expressions of anxiety and pessimism about this new album given the generally lukewarm reaction to the last one, I choose to have faith in Patrick Mameli and the 8-string guitar he used to record these new songs. Also, he says, ”We have gone beyond our human limits to achieve the highest form of brutal music . . . it is really ten of the most demanding songs written in death metal.”
Bring it on.
BEHEMOTH
Is there anyone more metal than Behemoth’s Nergal, all things considered? As the latest piece of evidence in support of a “No, there probably isn’t” answer, we learned today that some of his own blood has been used by Russian artist Denis Forkas (whose work we’ve featured on this site previously — for example, yesterday) in painting the cover art for Behemoth’s next album, The Satanist. Nergal explained in an interview:
“I wanted to incorporate some of my DNA into the art. This album seems to be so defining of who we are now as people and as individuals, and considering all the instances in recent years, [we wanted] to make it more ‘ours’ than it is usually.
“[The cover is] very arty; it’s very artistic and it really has no heavy metal clichés in it. Expect something very special and spectacular, and deeper than all of the other products that are in the market.”
The whole interview is interesting and can be found here.

OBLITERATION
Unlike the first two bands in this round-up, I’m pretty sure Norway’s Obliteration is a new name to me. Today we received a press release announcing that Relapse will be releasing their third album (and the first in four years), Black Death Horizon, on November 12 in North Amwerica. (It can be pre-ordered here).
Two things made me pay attention to this. First, the album art, which is quite cool. I haven’t yet identified the artist, but I’ll update this when I find out. Second, I saw this quote from Darkthrone’s Fenriz (and what he says about music usually carries weight with me): Black Death Horizon is “a brand new, old organic sounding death metal masterpiece.”
And with that wind-up, I listened to the following teaser of music, and oh yes, it sounds enticing.

LUMBAR
As a denizen of Seattle and a fan of the following PNW musicians’ other bands, I HAD to say something about their new joint project, which goes by the killer name of Lumbar:
Mike Scheidt (YOB, VHÖL)
Tad Doyle (TAD, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth)
Aaron Edge (Iamthethorn, They Shall Take Up Serpents, Rote Hexe, Himsa)
This trio have recorded a debut album by the name of The First & Last Days of Unwelcome, which will be released this November by Southern Lord Recordings. It was recorded and mixed in Seattle at Doyle’s Witch Ape Studio and mastered by Brad Boatright of Portland’s Audiosiege.
According to the band, Aaron Edge composed most of the material, “which meditates on his battle with multiple sclerosis”, and I suspect it’s going to be heavy. Check out the lyrics to one of the tracks below the link to Lumbar’s FB page, which I will be surveilling for more info about the album in the weeks ahead. And below that you can see some band pics I lifted from that page

Numb, dullness to follow
Pull towards a light
Strike, painful with sorrow
The past, still in my sight
Still in my sights
Sights
Send message of wallow
Mend, getting it right
Take, leaving me hallow
The past, still in my sight
Still in the sight
Rising of sun, thou will be done
Setting of sun, thou will be done
Ending of sun, thou will be done
It has begun, thou will be done
Now I am numb, numb…

NYFW Recap: LuisaViaRoma #Socialyte Gala
Menswear Dog recently got the chance to schmooze with the fashion elite this past Sunday at the LuisaViaRoma #SocialyteGala as the evening’s host and the only dog blogger in attendance.
The event featured award presentations by Style.com’s Dirk Standen and celeb stylist Pierre Michel, while guests enjoyed performances by emcee DJ AcE and Natalia Kills.
It was a fantastic night, and it was all for a good cause (with proceeds going to the Rescue Paw Foundation). Check out all of this year’s winners and the full event recap over at Socialyte.
Snake Oil Superfoods
Do any so-called “Superfoods” really have super powers?
Our pain-staking, hand-curated and now interactively visualized scientific evidence can answer.
See the visualization.
See the data.
Oh and we updated our classic Snake Oil: Supplements viz with all the latest evidence too.
Thanks to our head researcher Miriam Quick for amazing work. (It took months!)
Our Recipe
We’ve spent months reviewing the evidence, deep mining scientific studies, reviews, and meta-analyses, to find foods that actually have a demonstrable “super” effect on medical conditions or health in general.
What we found was a soup of mixed results (albeit a yummy one with hemp seeds in it)
An important note about the data
Unlike medicines and supplements, superfoods are difficult to test in controlled conditions. In usual medical studies, participants are ‘blinded’ to what they are receiving: a real treatment or a fake ‘placebo’ one. It’s hard to create convincing placebo foods, so these kind of controlled studies are scarce. So, for some of our evidence, we’ve had to use (less reliable) studies that statistically survey large populations of people (epidemiology) to find results.
Several foods – such as several promising seaweeds – only fall below the “worth it” threshold because a lack of studies.
What we discovered
» Folkloric confirmation Prunes really do keep you regular, and oats really do lower cholesterol.
» The fish oil controversy continues – it’s good for cancer patients and lowers levels of markers for cardiovascular disease risk. But evidence of its cognitive benefits is less clear.
» Want to lose weight? Eating eggs for breakfast can reduce your appetite for up to 36 hours.
» Fruit & veg have some role in cancer prevention – but which and in what amounts is unclear
» Eat your greens Cabbage and bladder cancer is an interesting one.
» Diabetes – No super foods seem to help the condition – we couldn’t find anything solid
Myths overturned
» Overall fruit & veg intake only plays a minor role in cancer prevention – but eating some types of veg (cabbages, broccoli, raw veg) may help protect you against some types of cancer.
» Cranberry juice does not prevent urinary tract infections. Does it help treat them? Not enough studies exist yet to be sure.
Foods of the Future
We’ll be maintaining this viz for the foreseeable future and updating it with new evidence as it appears. If you spot any, feel free to contact us or comment below the viz.
Until then, enjoy a daily bowl of barley porridge with almonds & honey. Mix garlic and sage into your scrambled eggs & salmon. Wash it down with a coffee and a glass of beetroot juice. Super!
Norwegian Air Shuttle Expanding U.S. Service, Offering Fares Under $500 RT

Finally, Europe flights are cheap again ©Free Grunge Textures
For American travelers missing the days of fares to Europe under $800-1,000, there is hope. At least for a few select cities.
Low-fare carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle already has service to New York-JFK and Ft. Lauderdale, and in 2014 service will be expanded to include Orlando, Los Angeles, and Oakland. The carrier is offering flights as low as $237 each way (tax included), which makes that European trip just a bit easier to get to.
But of course, there are a few downsides of a cheaper fare. The U.S. routes, current and forthcoming only serve Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. And to keep costs low, passengers pay extra for checked bags, food, and using a credit card.
Read more on the new routes from Time.com.

Transits Of Venus: 8 Women-Only Subway & Train Cars
SnorkmaidenI dislike the pink colour-coding. It's also pretty gender-police-y, and that's a deal-breaker. But I still kinda wish there was some kind of "safe" option for trams and trains and buses. Policy is problematic, of course.
Subway sandwich: good if you’re hungry, bad if you’re a female commuter. These 8 women-only transit cars offer groups of gals a grope-free rail road trip.
Japanese Rail & Subways
(image via: Wikipedia)
Japan first introduced women-only subway cars in 1912, though their usage was sporadic and isolated. Modern usage of train and subways carriages specifically restricted to women dates from the year 2000 with the Tokyo Metro succumbing to popular demand for such cars in 2005.
(images via: Apple Daily, The Japan Times and The Grid)
They may have been late to the dance but the Tokyo Metro now serves as a model for other city’s and nation’s transit systems on how to do women-only transit right. Designated cars are consistently color-coded (pink, naturally) to avoid confusion by the visually-impaired, signage on the trains in in the stations is profuse, and transit police are on hand to enforce the rules.
Rio de Janeiro Metro, Brazil
(image via: RAYRAY IN RIO!)
Brazil’s first gender-specific subway cars first appeared on São Paulo Metro in October 1995, but the scheme was discontinued in September 1997 after the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) received complaints from married couples. There was also the possibility that Article 5 of the Brazilian Constitution, which guarantees equality among citizens, might be inadvertently flouted giving rise to an expensive legal challenge. Curiously, the Rio de Janeiro Metro was untroubled by these sticking points and introduced women-only subway passenger carriages in April of 2006.
(images via: NBC News and Andén 2)
The official policy regarding women-only carriages dictates that for trains with six passenger cars, one car must exhibit predominantly pink colors and signage denoted the car to be for the exclusive use of women. It should be noted that pinkness notwithstanding, the women-only restriction only applies on weekdays during the morning and afternoon rush hours (3 hours each). Metro police enforcement is provided to ensure non-women (also known as men) stay out of the cars and station platforms have signs in pink, white and yellow on their floors indicating where women should assemble for boarding.
(image via: Wikipedia/Mario Roberto Durán Ortiz)
The recent introduction of Rio de Janeiro’s “Women’s Exclusive Cars” has allowed the system to borrow from other successful subway networks around the world: note the “Mind The Gap” warning on the platform, lifted from the London Underground circa 1969.
“Kereta Khusus Wanita”, Indonesia
(images via: CharlesKKB, The Jakarta Post and Tempo.co)
If the Indonesian commuter train you’re about to board is trimmed in pink & purple and bears the legend “Kereta Khusus Wanita”, back off Jack… unless you’re a Jill.
(image via: Korean Lecture Heeya)
Indonesian women have taken to the women-only services provided by the nation’s commuter train lines, and if such service is withdrawn they don’t take the loss lying down. Such was the case in May of 2013 when PT KAI Jabodetabek Commuter decided to discontinue the exclusive cars on its women-only Electric Railway Train (KRL) line running the Bogor to Jakarta route. “”

Marimekko S/S 2014 Fashion Preview
New York Fashion Week is in full swing, which means all eyes are already on the trends for spring and summer 2014. Instagram and Twitter are brimming with swoon-worthy photos straight from the runways and streets, making anyone who is NOT in NYC (me) uber jealous. However, I’m not too upset since the internet provides the best alternative to not physically being in the Big Apple. And thanks again to the internet, I can bring you a preview of the Marimekko S/S 2014 collection. Marimekko isn’t in the NYFW lineup this year, but the Finnish powerhouse did participate in Copenhagen Fashion Week back in early August.
Marimekko transformed the textile industry with its bold colors and unconventional patterns more than 60 years ago. Today, the Finnish powerhouse is still at it. A plethora of structured and free-flowing dresses graced the runways in eye-catching shades and prints, a perfect combination for welcoming spring and summer. Entitled “Freedom of Expression,” the collection embodies a wide spectrum of cuts and patterns. From soft and painterly to bold and geometric, it can all be found in this playful collection.
Separates worn together as head-to-toe uniforms made it down the catwalk, lending a matchy-matchy vibe. Usually I’m not a fan, but with Marimekko’s striking patterns, it just works. The all-over pattern look definitely makes a bold statement and lives up to collection’s title.
A slight departure from the signature structured shift dresses and bold tones also made way for flowy silhouettes and softer shades as pictured above.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Marimekko fashion show without a few Unikko sightings. You can bet that Maija Isola’s iconic Unikko pattern rocked the runway. Several unique pieces in different colorways hit the catwalk, displaying sensational takes on the timeless print. Watch the show in it’s entirety by checking out the YouTube video below. To fulfill your Marimekko fix, visit AlwaysMod for the latest in fabrics, bedding, dinnerware and more.

ANOTHER ROUND-UP: VUTURE INDUSTRIES, ZEMIAL, TRANSIENT, AND SCYTHE
SnorkmaidenVulture Industries is my friend's brother's band. Or rather, my friend's brother is the drummer :)
Because of reasons, I haven’t had time to finish any reviews in weeks, but I will have one tomorrow even if it means I have to stop going to the bathroom and begin soiling myself (again). What I have had time to do is browse and listen randomly to new things. Here are a slew of goodies I found today. I promise, they will keep you off-balance.
VULTURE INDUSTRIES
This is almost becoming embarrassing. Three new songs and/or videos have premiered from the forthcoming album by this Norwegian band and I’ve featured every one of them. That’s saying something, because we don’t do this with every damned thing that emerges on a daily basis. The news and new music we choose to cover as compared to everything happening each day is something like the ratio of a gnat’s ass to an elephant’s ass. Yet I’m strangely attracted to all of the strange new music I’ve heard so far from The Tower.
Today’s new piece of vulturization comes in the form of a music video for “Lost Among Liars”. It starts with a saxophone and ends with the strumming of acoustic guitar, and in the middle Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen’s unusual vocals weave dark spells over a moody guitar melody. At least as attractive as the song is the wonderful animated artwork of Costin Chioreanu.
I won’t even try to claim this is metal, but if you’re not careful it will take up residence in your head.
The Tower is due for North American release through Season of Mist on October 1 (and on September 27 in countries who aren’t planning to bomb Syria).

ZEMIAL
I can’t assure you that my mind works very well, but in my mind this next track and the one above share a certain kinship. Zemial are from Greece, not Norway; their new album is named Nykta, not The Tower; and there are other significant differences. But like Vulture Industries, they are marching to the beat of a different drummer.
Actually, the word “marching” connotes a sense of regimentation and orderliness that’s highly misleading, even when used in connection with the drummer who hears beats that others don’t hear. I’ve heard two songs from the album so far, the second of which premiered today: “Under Scythian Command” and “Pharos”. The former is relatively short, the latter quite long.
The first one is a rippling romp of dirty thrash with a very old-school feel — but it kind of bounces, and there’s a brief moment when it sounds like it’s about to veer off into another dimension.
“Pharos” is a different breed of cat altogether, beginning with very different vocal stylings from the first song (this time, hoarse roars, slightly unhinged proclamations that are both clean and gargled, and demonic laughter). The riffing and rhythms change unpredictably; the song comes to a dead stop a couple of times. And along the way you’ll find three very different extended guitar solos which are part of the true soul of the song, two of which are constructed around beautiful ethnic melodies and one that seems very prog-minded.
Also, the back end of the song floats into an ambient drift, with monastic droning and one of those morphing guitar solos that ultimately becomes hypnotic. A fascinating song, and when considered along with the first one, it suggests that this whole album is going to encompass a lot of variety.
Nykta should be out on October 31 via Hells Headbangers (orderable here or on Bandcamp via this link). Check out the songs below.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Zemial-Official/199551066758156
TRANSIENT
I promised I’d keep you off-balance, so let’s follow “Pharos” with a new song by Transient that I heard yesterday. I stopped to hear it mainly because of the stupendous album cover you’re looking at, created by Ian Michael Anderson. And also because Transient are from Portland.
Their new self-titled album is due for release on September 10 by Six Weeks Records, and the song I heard yesterday is “False Philanthropy”. Krysta Martinez (also of Landmine Marathon) growls like a dog and shrieks like a banshee who’s just been napalmed, and the dudes behind her crush and rip their way through an ever-changing swath of grind brutality. Nice.
(you can listen to another Transient track here)
https://www.facebook.com/transientbrutality
SCYTHE
Okie dokie, for my last un-balancing act of this round-up, I give you Chiacgo’s Scythe. They were formed by vocalist/guitarist Rick Scythe following the demise of the venerable Usurper, and their second album, Subterranean Steel, is coming out on September 11 on a label called R.I.P. Records.
The song I heard earlier today is “Monarch”, and it’s a head-smashing mix of punishing death metal and classic heavy metal riffing, with a pyrotechnical guitar solo and a lot of vocal variety, too (all of it thoroughly ravenous). The production gives the song so much low-end weight that it rampages like a possessed cement-mixer. Limber up your neck muscles and press play below (and you can listen to another new Scythe track here).
UPDATE: Subterranean Steel will be released by Finland’s Primitive Reaction in Europe, and thanks to a tip from our friend fireangel, who specializes in monitoring happenings in the world of Finnish metal, I’ve learned that Finnish artist Juha Vuorma created artwork different from what you see above for the CD’s back cover and inlay. I’ve added that just below the “Monarch” stream.
