Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Series is Coming to Television

by Andrew Liptak

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series is set to be adapted for television, according to Variety. Pratchett’s production company Narrativia has signed with Motive Pictures and Endeavor Content to develop the project.

Variety notes that it’s not known which of the 41 novels will be adapted first, but that the adaptation will be “absolutely faithful” to them.

Narrativia said in a statement to The Guardian that “the spirit of this new alliance has been forged from a shared love of the source material and a commitment to create an epic series, which will kick off with some of the most iconic titles in Sir Terry’s fiercely incisive and satirical universe.”

Buy it Now

Should the adaptation go through—it should be noted that lots of projects are put into development—it’ll be the latest world of Pratchett’s to be adapted for television. In the pipeline is The Watch from BBC America, which has garnered some criticism from fans over apparent departures from Pratchett’s novels. That series is set to be released sometime this year. Last year, Amazon Studios adapted Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s novel Good Omens for a six-part miniseries.

A handful of Pratchett’s other Discworld novels have been adapted for television over the years: an animated version of his novel Wyrd Sisters debuted on Channel 4 in 1997, while Sky One produced a trio of TV movies: Hogfather (2006), The Colour of Magic (2008), and Going Postal (2010). Last year, director Daniel Knight produced a short film based on the short story Troll Bridge.

With the streaming market maturing, services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV +, Disney +, and the forthcoming Peacock and HBO Max are all on the hunt for original content to set their offerings apart to entice subscribers to sign up. With more than 40 novels that cover a wide range of genres and characters, Discworld could be an appealing franchise for one of them to snap up.

N=1 | Överätning på ketogen kost

by Martina

Disney To Launch Mandalorian Behind-the-Scenes Series

by Andrew Liptak
Oakfairy

Whaaat.

It’s going to be a couple of months before we get the next season of The Mandalorian, but Disney will soon release something to tide us over: Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian. The eight-episode, behind-the-scenes series premieres on May 4th, and will be about different elements of the series, and will provide some interviews, unreleased footage, and roundtable discussions.

The series will be “an opportunity for fans of the show to take a look inside and get to see a different perspective, and perhaps a greater understanding, of how The Mandalorian came together,” says Favreau.

Covered in the series will be a wide range of topics: “the filmmaking process, the legacy of George Lucas’s Star Wars, how the cast brought the characters to life, the series’ groundbreaking technology, the artistry behind the show’s practical models, effects, and creatures, plus the creative influences, the iconic score, and connections to Star Wars characters and props from across the galaxy.”

This behind-the-scenes series should provide a good bit of insight into the making of The Mandalorian, which featured some truly groundbreaking special effects work, utilizing digital sets. And of course, it seems extremely likely that we’ll get a good look into how they brought to life the show’s most important character, The Child (aka, Baby Yoda).

On Hugging.

by Zoot

We were watching the first half of the last Harry Potter movie last night. There’s a knock at the door and Harry opens it and is gleeful when he finds all of his friends from the Order waiting to help him leave safely. AND THEN HE HUGS ALL OF THEM AND I COVERED MY EYES IN THE HORROR.

The promo graphic going around last week for Schitt’s Creek was a photo of three of the main female characters holding hands and every time it popped up in my feed I cringed. DO NOT HOLD HANDS YOU CRAZIES. Corona may not be in Schitt’s Creek yet…BUT IT WILL BE THERE SOON.

It’s funny how fast your instincts change. Just four weeks ago I was at Costco to buy my Mom a mattress and I saw a friend who I hugged even though we were all kinda talking about how we should not be hugging for awhile but I couldn’t help myself! It’s my instinct to hug someone I haven’t seen in awhile!

That was before…now I don’t even want my fictional characters on TV hugging even if it was a scene shot almost 10 years ago.

I was wondering the other day when I’ll feel okay hugging again. I feel like it won’t be until there’s a vaccine or a cure that we all know is available and accessible. Like…even if the cases reduce to like they are in China now I don’t see myself wanting to hug people again and this makes me so sad. I am/was a hugger. Hugging was my greeting because it didn’t involved talking. I always screw up with the talking but I am great at hugging. It’s much easier to give someone a hug than to come up with some sort of non-awkward hello that indicates how much you are happy to see someone.

I mean, I’m avoiding people at all costs now, obviously, but when things settle down…when will I feel like hugging? And when will I be confident other’s are too? I’ve always tended to get permission to hug if it’s a friend I don’t know for sure is a hugger…so maybe I’ll start doing that to everyone? Sometime in 2021?

Ugg. I miss so much about my old life. I miss daily grocery trips (I hate meal planning or shopping for more than one day at a time) and I miss seeing friends and family casually and I miss quiet in my home and I miss normal levels of anxiety…but I really, really, really, really miss hugging.

On a related note…I have not been able to curb the face-touching. Still working on that one. It’s hard to stop something you don’t know you’re doing.

Nothing But Blue Sky

by John Scalzi

So, here’s a thing I never expected to see again in my lifetime: A sky entirely devoid of contrails, and the planes that make them. This is a 360-degree “photosphere” panorama from my yard, so the entire sky is here, and not altered from the photo that came out of my camera (I did photoshop the yard, since Athena was in it and she didn’t want to be in the final photo). Minus the curving streaks from the sun that are an artifact of the camera lens, there’s nothing but blue sky.

There’s only one other time in my life I’ve seen a sky like this, and it was in similarly extraordinary circumstances. And just like that time, I am amazed to see the sky of my ancestors. I genuinely never thought it would come around again.

Watch The Witcher’s Stunt Coordinator Choreograph That Opening Fight Scene

by Stubby the Rocket

The Witcher is one of many shows forced to go on pause because of the coronavirus, which means there’s no telling when its much-teased second season will arive. In the meantime, fans have to make do with the books, the games, all those “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” remixes, and re-watching season 1 (maybe to clear up any lingering confusion with the timelines?). It looks like Netflix is banking on the latter. On Monday, the streaming service released a video with the show’s stunt coordinator, Vladimír Furdík (fun fact: he also played the Night King on Game of Thrones), who broke down how the show pulled off that opening fight sequence.

Buy it Now

As you’ll recall, The Witcher begins with Geralt swamp-wrestling the Kikimora, a giant spider-like abomination. Well, part of Furdík’s job is going through and acting out all the fight scenes beforehand. But how does one do that with a mostly CGI monster? The answer: two conference tables, five dudes, and eight makeshift “legs” taped together from long metal pipes.

“They undo the legs and I start to build the fight,” he says in the video, swinging a sword. Because the fight unfolds with inhuman, witcher-level swiftness in the show, he had to do the blocking at a quarter of the speed. And even though the final fight sequence only takes about two minutes to unfold, a lot of choreography went into its design.

“I thought that he should be a fighter who already predict three seconds before going to kill someone else,” Furdík reveals in the video.

Sounds like Geralt, alright. For a cool double-feature, we’d suggest pairing this video with Henry Cavill’s Witcher guide to getting swole. Obviously, do not attempt at home or without a licensed grizzled mentor fellow (read: personal trainer).

Anonymous: “I Got Swabbed For Covid-19 Today”

by terribleminds

So, let’s say this up front: this post is not from me, but from a friend. A friend who wanted this kept anonymous due to — well, not just the Internet, I’m sure, but friends and family. You are wise not to trust this, because it’s an account from a person you don’t know, a person without a name. I know them. And I trust them. And this story isn’t even that salacious or terrifying, except for me in a kind of subtle, dystopian way. This person asked if I could post this somewhere, and so here I am, posting it.

* * *

I got swabbed for covid-19 today.

I went in to my rheumatologist for a routine appointment, and at admission, I was asked if I’d had any of the symptoms listed on the wall. As it happens, I’ve had a very mild fever (between normal and 99.6) off and on since Feb. 20 (it’s March 10 as I write this, so 18 days), and a cough intermittently for even longer —but I have asthma, I have a cough a lot of the time.

So I told the nice woman manning the desk. She very apologetically gave me a paper surgical mask, then told me to sit in the waiting room. Some time later, I was told to go into an exam room to wait instead.

Even later still, a PA came in with gloves, a gown, a surgical mask and visor, awkwardly tried to take my temperature without holding the thermometer, and when it fell out of the sleeve and onto the ground, she gave up. Then she said my rheumatologist would call me later, and I should go to urgent care to be tested. She gave me a bad photocopy showing three locations where testing for coronavirus was already set up.

When I left, all of the desk staff were wearing masks. They hadn’t been before.

Let me back up. I’m absolutely confident I don’t have coronavirus at this time. If nothing else, I have a pretty bad immune system, am on immunosuppressants, and suffer some comorbidities — I would expect to be much sicker than this.

OK, so, not especially sick, but I try to do the right thing. And so in the interest of public health, and feeling slightly ridiculous, I went to urgent care.

I put my mask back on, went in, waited for a while as the patient in front of my finished checking out. They were not wearing masks at this urgent care.

When I explained why I was there, the receptionist told me to go sit in my car and call her. So I did. I was checked in, she told me there were five patients ahead of me, and she’d call when it was time for me to come in.

OK. Abundance of caution. Also very, very frightening. I watched people around me come and go. I wondered if it was OK to have my car windows open or not.

An hour and change later, I called again from the parking lot wondering what my ETA was. She told me I was still behind five other patients — they had been waiting on a delivery of gowns — but there was no wait at an associated urgent care facility seven minutes away.

Fine. I went.

This place let me wait in the waiting room until I was called. Half the front desk staff had masks, but not everyone.

When I was called, the nice woman in a gown, gloves, and mask but no visor took my blood pressure and temperature (99), then swabbed both nostrils with the same two Q-tips (deeply uncomfortable but not painful.) “I’ve been testing for two or three days and haven’t seen any come back yet,” she said. “So it may be a while.”

I laughed. “So I should hear in, what, a week?”

“You’re optimistic,” she said. Then she sent me on my way.

I stopped at the front desk about my copay. “Should I pay here, or…?” I asked. I gestured at my mask. Handing over a credit card didn’t seem like the best idea.

The front desk staff consulted with each other and shrugged. “You can pay,” one said.

That seemed… wrong. Unhygienic. “Are you sure? I don’t want to…”

“We can bill you,” the other one said. “Have a nice day.”

Here are some things I have learned:

* When you are already short of breath, wearing a mask makes it worse.

* When you are already kinda freaked out, waiting alone in your car makes it worse.

* There is wildly inconsistent medical practice on protocols to prevent transmission.

All of these things are going to need to be addressed. The first two because the more isolating, uncomfortable, and flat out terrifying the experience of getting tested is, the less likely people are going to follow through. Note that there were several steps in here where I could have just not done my civic duty and no one would be the wiser.

And the third is a problem for obvious reasons. If even people working on the front lines aren’t taking consistent steps against transmission, what hope do the rest of us have?

This is going to be rough, friends. Take care of yourselves, wash your hands, and flattenthecurve.com.

NBC’s Battlestar Galactica Reboot Might Be Set in the Same Universe as Ronald D. Moore’s Series

by Andrew Liptak

Back in September, NBCUniversal announced that it was developing a reboot of its space opera franchise Battlestar Galactica for its upcoming Peacock streaming service. According to Ronald D. Moore, the creator of the influential 2003 remake, the new series might remain in the same universe, rather than reboot the franchise with a brand new story.

Speaking with Variety ahead of the season 5 premiere of his series Outlander, Moore explained that Sam Esmail had reached out to him to talk about the series.

“Sam called me and was very gracious, he didn’t pitch me the story so I don’t know, but he said his plans and he wasn’t going to re-start the show and recast it but he wanted to do something in the same universe.”

That tracks with what Esmail (who created the hacker series Mr. Robot) has said in the past: that he wouldn’t be remaking Ronald D. Moore’s series, but that he’ll “explore a new story within the mythology.”

That’s good news for fans of Moore’s series, which arguably kicked off part of the current boom in genre television that we’re currently experiencing. Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica was a complete reboot (with some nods to the original) of the original 1978 NBC series, following humanity’s desperate escape after being almost completely wiped out by a race of machines called the Cylons.

In 2009, Glen A. Larson, the creator of the original series, began to set up a rebooted film at Universal Pictures, with X-Men director Bryan Singer set to direct. The project has languished since then, however, although as of 2018, Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider Web) had been rewriting a script writen by Westworld creator Lisa Joy, with Francis Lawrence (Red Sparrow) set to direct. It’s not immediately clear where this film reboot sits in relation to the new NBC series.

A new addition to the franchise could do what Syfy was never quite able to do successfully: transform its critically-acclaimed show into a larger franchise. Syfy did launch a followup series: a prequel called Caprica in 2010, which lasted for all of a season before it was cancelled. A couple of years later, Syfy / NBC released Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, a prequel web series following a young William Adama during the first Cylon War, originally intended as a pilot for a proper series, but it ultimately hit the web as ten short webisodes. Syfy also put together a pair of TV films, The Plan (2009) and Razor (2007).

At NBC enters the streaming arena with Peacock, capitalizing on its existing IP makes considerable sense, and even it makes even more sense to capitalize on what remaining goodwill exists for Moore’s series: it was critically acclaimed with mainstream audiences and critics, who were attracted to its serious take on a science fictional concept. Battlestar Galactica has some name recognition, and given the competition within the genre sphere between the likes of Amazon, Apple (which has its own Moore series, For All Mankind), Disney +, HBO Max, and Netflix, that could be enough to entice subscribers into signing up for the service to check it out.

Hopefully, whatever this reboot comes out of NBC after Peacock launches — in April for Comcast customers and July 15th for everyone else — it’ll live up to the spirit and example set by its predecessor by telling a thoughtful, interesting, and exciting story. So say we all.

HÄR hittar du bra pepparmynta från Bodystore (köplänk)

Blodsockerexperiment – CGM | Nasty carbs

by Martina

Nasty carbs
Pizza ser oskyldigt ut, men effekten sitter i sjukt länge.

Blodsockerexperiment – CGM | Resultat

by Martina
Oakfairy

Sjukt intressant!

Låt oss hoppa rakt in i resultaten.

February 10, 2020: I’m Team Habanero!

Helvete...

I love spicy.  Always have.  The heat, obviously, but also the flavors of the varied peppers simmering beneath that deep fire kick.  The bottom shelf of my refrigerator is occupied by my hot sauce collection (much to Akemi’s chagrin) with names like Brain Damage, Memento Muerte, and Howler Monkey.  Although I have a high tolerance for heat (I always opt for Thai Spicy whenever we got out for Thai), I avoid the ultra-hot sauces that are pure burn and taste of vulcanized rubber.  I prefer the fruit-based hot sauces, more sweet than vinegared, something with a thick body like a Caribbean scotch bonnet pepper sauce or a habanero sauce with a chunky consistency.  Whenever I eat at home, I’ll pull out three random bottles and sample with my meal, narrowing down my list of favorites.

Sriracha is a popular go-to (that pairs surprisingly well with maple syrup if you’re looking for a sweet and spicy combo).  The cayenne-based sauces like Tabasco and Frank’s Red Hot are fine, but a little too dilute.  The jalapeno-based sauces are also fine, but my color preferences run to the reds and golds.  I do like the Marie Sharp line as well as the selection offered by Montreal-based La Pimenterie.  I’m a big fan of Dawson’s Cremini Habanero and was recently surprised by Big Fat’s 7o8 Optimus PrimoHot One’s The Last Dab (featured on First We Feast, a series that sees its host interview celebrities while they dine on increasingly spicier wings, culminating in the aforementioned sauce) is crazy-hot, and at the very edge of my endurance…but tasty!  There used to be a place on the San Francisco pier that sold one of my favorite hot sauces of all time, Besos De Fuego (Kiss of Fire), a fiery mix of fruit mustard, and, I suspect, habanero.  Sadly, it no longer exists.

When I go to the farmer’s market, I’ll often pick up fresh peppers, everything from bird’s eyes to fatalis, then oven dry them before either grinding them to a fine power or using them as the base for varied oils.   The powders I seal in tiny plastic containers and carry them around with me – in case of emergency.  I know double seal these containers in a tiny plastic bag, this after a painful and unfortunate mishap taught me a valuable lesson about the need to be extra careful with what you put in your pocket.

My favorite pepper in terms of kick and flavor is, without a doubt, the habanero.  My sister grows scorpions, ghost peppers, and Carolina reapers and while I have enjoyed the two former, I have to draw the line at the latter which has the distinction of being unbearably hot – AND also possessed of an unpleasant, almost acrid undertone.  But maybe that’s just me.

Behold the Scoville scale!  How high can you go?
