Breaking the Ice

“I was looking for people pulling ice out of the frozen Songhua River, and I walked for about five miles alone on the river before I spotted this team working the ice,” says Your Shot contributor Wesley Thomas Wong, who has been working on a project about ice workers in Harbin, China, for four years.

“I made several trips to various ice festival sites under construction in and around Harbin. I wanted to find out where these guys were getting these huge blocks of ice for construction material, and I learned that all of it came from one place—the river.”

Newswire: There is a symphonic Finnish prog-rock concept album about Scrooge McDuck

by Jason Heller

The melding of music and ducks hasn’t always been taken particularly seriously, but that’s about to change. Tuomas Holopainen, keyboardist of Finnish prog-metal band Nightwish, is releasing his solo debut, Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge, on April 15, and it has nothing to do with Dickens. Instead it’s a symphonic concept album based on Don Rosa’s graphic novel The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck, which traces the origin of the beloved Disney character. Rosa will also be illustrating the cover of the album. The video for the album’s lead track, “A Lifetime Of Adventure,” has already been released; says Holopainen in an interview featured on the album’s trailer, “This is not a so-called commercial album.” Do tell. The daring way in which Holopainen’s noble noncommerciality contradicts Scrooge McDuck’s inveterate capitalism is an epic question of ideology perhaps ...

Pursued

A voracious predator, the bluefin tuna feeds mainly on small fish, crustaceans, and squid. But it too is pursued relentlessly as the human appetite for its flesh continues to grow.

The Edition Hotel, London

by The Sartorialist
None!

this is where i stay!

The beginning of fashion week /month, is never easy, but luckily mine started in the Edition Hotel in London which has become my go-to studio/bedroom over the past year whenever I’m in London.

I’m not much of a party guy — I’m a bit lazy after 7 pm. Fortunately, the lobby and restaurant of the Edition Hotel is one of the most hopping spots of all London during fashion week. It makes my dream of  partying in my pajamas a potential reality.

Native Stand

In the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area, stands of rimu trees, a type of conifer found only in New Zealand, are a signature of Gondwana, the supercontinent that fragmented into the landmasses of today’s Southern Hemisphere.

Captured drug lord a master of supply chain management

by Ethan Lindsey
None!

With the capture of the drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera over the weekend in Mazatlan, so ends the reign of one of the most successful drug traffickers of all time. It was his master of supply chain management that made him a success in the underground drug economy.

Tim Fernholz, economics writer for Quartz, compares El Chapo to Steve Jobs:

"His life’s work has been to build the Sinaloa cartel into the world’s most efficient drug business, with billion-dollar revenues to rival Western blue-chip companies; he earned comparisons to CEOs for mastering the art of supply chain management, exploiting the massive demand for illegal drugs in the United States and Europe. …

"But it’s precisely this level of sophistication that has experts predicting the Sinaloa cartel will survive its mastermind’s detention; if Guzman is the Steve Jobs of coke, he probably groomed a Tim Cook to take his place."

"El Chapo" likely left a successor to continue in his steps.

What really happens in those Swiss banks

by Sabri
None!

It reads more like a plot pitch for the next spy thriller than a Senate report. But the laundry list of methods used by Credit Suisse's American clientele to hide assets is the kind of thing that cannot be made up.
•One woman flew to Switzerland with $250,000 hidden in pantyhouse wrapped around her body.
•Others were transported to private banking suites using secret, remote-controlled elevators.
•Credit Suisse bankers are said to have traveled to the states using tourist visas in order to recruit and do business with American clientele.
•One client received bank statements hidden between the pages of a Sports Illustrated Magazine.

i dont see any of this but i definately have been in a room with a guy demanding that he pay 0% and we are like ... no doesnt work like that here.

Crying Wolves

"Wolves are especially hard to photograph in the wild," writes Petra Warner, a member of National Geographic Your Shot. "This picture was taken at Wolf Park in Indiana, a wildlife and research facility primarily focused on wolves but also on foxes, coyotes, and bison. Not only do they do a wonderful job with wildlife conservation, but they also increase awareness via education and photo workshops."

While attending one of the photo workshops, Warner had the opportunity to see the animals up close. "I specifically chose a winter's day so that the timber wolves would stand out against the snow, and one howl from a staff member sent this group of wolves a-howling—and thus this picture."
