The Crash Landing of Southwest 345

by John Gruber

A tale of harrow and then frustration from Nick Bradbury:

I read somewhere that technically what we experienced isn’t considered a crash landing, but in my mind when a plane hits the runway nose first, crushes the front landing gear, and skids 2,175 feet in a shower of sparks before stopping, it’s a crash landing.

Yeah, I’d say so too.

The next day, Southwest delivered our bags to our hotel but my carry-on wasn’t among them. It arrived a day later – without my MacBook Pro. That, along with an Apple TV and a Lightning cable, had been stolen from my bag. Southwest has agreed to reimburse me for these items once I provide proof that I purchased them (no problem, I have receipts). They claim the items weren’t stolen but were more likely “misplaced” by someone sent on board to retrieve carry-on bags.

The way Southwest handled the entire aftermath of this was just horrendous.

Microsoft Wants Google to Censor…. Microsoft.com

by Ernesto

microsoft-pirateEarlier this week we reported that Google has already received takedown requests for more than 100 million URLs this year.

While most of the submitted URLs do indeed link to infringing content, not all requests received by Google are correct.

The automated systems used by many of the copyright holders often trigger notices that include links to perfectly legitimate content, and sometimes even their own work. The latter happened in a recent DMCA takedown request sent by LeakID on behalf of Microsoft.

Instead of listing URLs of infringing material, Microsoft asked Google to remove links to their own websites, as can be seen below. The six links point to Microsoft’s store, support pages and product descriptions. A pretty embarrassing mistake to say the least.

Whoops..

google-dmca-ms

Luckily for Microsoft, Google spotted the error, meaning that the pages in question have not been removed from the search results, although it would have been a fitting punishment if Google had decided to comply with the request.

While the above error is rather entertaining, matters gets more serious when copyright holders censor legitimate content produced by others. It’s hard to say how frequently this happens, but just by browsing through the many DMCA notices we have been able to find dozens of examples already.

Just two weeks ago we found that HBO had asked Google to remove a perfectly legal copy of the open source video player VLC, for example. The link in question was clearly submitted in error, but at the time of writing it’s still absent from Google’s search result.

Some individuals respond to these mistakes by blaming the search engine, and taking counter-action. For example, a person who uses the handle “Google dicksuck” decided to respond to the VLC takedown request by asking Google to remove HBO.com.

How about this takedown?

google-ds

Unfortunately for him or her, Google did not remove the TV-network’s website.

Of course Google can’t really be blamed for responding to takedown requests because they are required to do so by law. Considering the millions of notices submitted to them every week, Google does a pretty good job at filtering out the most obvious mistakes.

The copyright holders on the other hand could take much more care to prevent these errors. Even if it’s just to avoid embarrassing themselves.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson told TorrentFreak the following in response to our findings.

“We believe strongly in the effectiveness and the need for accuracy in the use of notice and takedown to address online infringement. To explain what happened here, Google’s online form requires identification of both the copyrighted content being infringed and the website address of the infringement.”

“A vendor properly listed those six urls as Microsoft copyrighted content that was being infringed, but then inadvertently copied and pasted those same six urls in the field to identify the locations of infringement. This simple clerical error was identified and corrected right away, and we have taken steps to address the process to avoid it being repeated.”

TCA: NBC Will Wait And See About Covering Russia’s Anti-Gay Laws During Winter Games, But Takes Firm Stand Against Monkey-Comedy Interruptions

by LISA DE MORAES, TV Columnist

post thumbnail

NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus tried to split the baby and wound up butchering it this afternoon at TCA Summer TV Press Tour 2013, when he said the network’s upcoming coverage of the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi “comes with political and social issues” which NBC will address — “as they are relevant at the time of the game, as has always been the case.” Then, without missing a beat, he began to “we cannot wait to get to Sochi, very optimistic about the U.S. team, biggest Winter Olympics ever,” blah blah, blah, while TV critics in the hall tried to recover from the whiplash. Russia’s newly-adopted anti-gay laws have some calling for NBC to boycott the Games (The International Olympic Committee has said it will “work to ensure” that LGBT athletes competing in the games will not face danger or legal issues).

Among those calling for boycott, HRC President Chad Griffin reportedly wrote a letter to NBCUniversal CEO Stephen Burke, saying the media conglom has a “responsibility to expose this inhumane and unjust law to the millions of American viewers who will tune in to watch the Games.” Griffin said it would be wrong for NBCU “to air the opening ceremonies, which is an hours-long advertisement for the host country, without acknowledging that a whole segment of the Russian population — not to mention foreign athletes and visitors — can be jailed for an immutable aspect of their identity.”

NBC’s response –  at the Press Tour anyway — was Lazarus’s baby-splitting act: “The IOC has addressed it with the Russian government and has been assured athletes, fans, and the media there will not be any issues with regard to what takes place during the Games,” he said. “Right now they have a law that is the law of their land,” he said, stating the obvious, and adding the even more obvious, “governments across the world have different laws.” “It exists,” he continued, warming to his theme. “We don’t know what it’s going to mean to us, so we don’t know how we’re going to cover it.” Then he added, limply, that NBCUniversal believes in “equal opportunity for all” and that he didn’t think the Russian laws where in the spirit of The Games.

This would be a good time for NBC Sports to replay that footage of “Miracle on Ice” medal-round men’s ice hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, in which the underdog U.S. team beat the Russian team. Sure enough — here it comes!

Lazarus did, however, take a strong anti-rannygazoo-from-NBC Entertainment stance about the upcoming Games. Olympics-interrupting premieres of comedies starring monkeys — or other celebrities, for that matter –  will absolutely not be tolerated during NBC Sport’s coverage of the Sochi Games, he promised, adding,  “I don’t think we’d put ourselves in a position to do that again,” he said in re the network’s notorious interrupt of the London Summer Games Closing Ceremonies to premiere its Crystal The Monkey starrer Animal Practice.

Well that’s a relief, anyway.

While we may get no coverage of Russia’s new anti-gay laws during NBC’s Olympics coverage from that country, we will get an NBC Sports documentary about Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. NBC Sports announced at the Press Tour today it will commemorate the proud moment in which the ex-hubby of Olympian Tonya Harding had Olympian Nancy Kerrigan’s knee clubbed ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. NBC’s Harding/Kerrigan documentary joins ESPN’s Harding/Kerrigan documentary, in the growing pantheon of Harding/Kerrigan documentaries. NBC Sports, however, says it’s got the exclusive sit down with Kerrigan; ESPN, which came to press tour a few days earlier, said it was still trying to land Kerrigan.

Dog Days of Summer: The MacBook Pro chew toy

by Steven Sande

There probably isn't a day that goes by that Rory's human Dave Moczulski doesn't silently thank Jony Ive for deciding to make the MacBook Pro out of aluminum instead of rubber or rawhide...

If you've got a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page (and please remember that the photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple and its products -- don't just send us a photo of your canine buddy). For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link.

Thanks to TUAW reader Dave Moczulski for this photo of his pup Rory!

"Steve was Steve."

"Steve was Steve.":

Thomas Heath speaks with longtime tech executive Bill Raduchel about a wide variety of tech topics. Not surprisingly, the Steve Jobs anecdote is the best:

I was working at Sun Microsystems, and one day, I went to present Sun’s offer to acquire NeXT Computer.

This was the early ’90s. NeXT was in a nondescript office building in Silicon Valley. I went over by myself, walked in and the receptionist said, “Mr. Jobs is waiting for you in the boardroom.”

I walked into the boardroom, and there was Steve sitting at the end of a table with a spotlight on him, but otherwise the room was dark.

So I sat down in the dark in the chair next to him, and I started making a comment on the latest Pixar movie, which I think was “Toy Story.”

He cut me off and said, “What’s the number?” I told him. He said: “Congratulations. You found the right number. That’s what I would pay if I were Sun. But I want my number, and someone will pay it. Goodbye.”

And that was it.

Steve was Steve.

Tony Fadell details his journey from Apple to Nest

by Yoni Heisler

Tony Fadell may not have the same level of name recognition as, say, Jony Ive, but Fadell was unquestionably an important cog in Apple's climb to greatness in the early 2000s. Sometimes referred to as the "father of the iPod", Fadell helped churn out 18 different generations of iPod models before leaving Apple in 2008 and subsequently re-emerging on the tech scene with the Nest Learning Thermostat.

In a recent article written for the New York Times, Fadell himself details his journey from a young kid growing up in Michigan to an important member of Apple's executive team, and everything in between.

Fadell notes that his fascination with computing began in grade school after taking a summer programming class. From there on end, he was hooked. Always looking to create, he started his first company in high school, a little outfit that resold Apple II hardware and wrote software.

Fadell began studying computer engineering at the University of Michigan in 1987. Interestingly, Fadell notes that his dream, upon graduation, was to go to California and work for General Magic, a famed company with strong Apple roots founded by Bill Atkinson, Andy Hertzfeld and Marc Porat.

I knocked on their door until they hired me later that year. I spent four years there, developing hardware and software to create personal hand-held communications devices, including Sony's MagicLink.

Following that, Fadell proceeded to work for Phillips before leaving to start Fuse Systems.

Fadell joined Apple in 2001 as a consultant and the rest, as they say, is history. Fadell played an instrumental role in the development of the iPod and stayed at Apple until 2008, playing a direct role in the development of many iPod models and the first few iterations of the iPhone.

Eight weeks later, I approached Steve Jobs with the initial iPod concept and was put in charge of building and leading the development team. One iPod led to another, eventually becoming 18 generations of iPods - and then three generations of the iPhone. My wife also worked at Apple. Eventually I wanted to spend more time with our two children, and I also wanted a break. So in 2008, I stepped away as senior vice president of Apple's iPod division and became a strategic adviser to Mr. Jobs. He was an incredible influence on how I think about bringing products to market.

Upon leaving Apple, Fadell took some time off but reemerged with a new venture, Nest Labs.

Having spent many years at Apple and a number of other tech companies, Fadell has an interesting perspective as to what ingredients are necessary for a consumer electronics company to thrive.

In January of this year, while speaking at the Bloomberg Design Conference, Fadell articulated that one of the reasons Apple is as successful as it is is because the company ships 99% of its products that reach internal milestones.

Fadell contrasted this "develop to launch" ideology with the culture he experienced at Phillips.

"Nine times out of ten, or 99 times out of 100, they would kill the project, either at the beginning, the middle or right before the product was supposed to be shipped," Fadell explained.

"When you're in a culture that has a point of view, and drives to launch everything it does, you know you're on the hook and you better bring your best game every time."

Estou a ultrapassar a hidrofobia

by Bruno Miguel

VLC For iPhone and iPad Returns With Wi-Fi Upload, Dropbox Sync and More

by Jordan Golson
Several years ago, the popular desktop media player VLC was released for iPhone and iPad on the App Store. However, the app was eventually removed from the store over copyright issues with the GPL license.

Now, VLC is back on iOS [App Store Link] with a complete rewrite including AirPlay support, multiple ways to load files into the video app, realtime video filters, playback speed manipulation, subtitles and more.

VLC for iOS is still rolling out to international App Stores, beginning in Australia and New Zealand and arriving in the U.S. this evening.

Vlcipad
Today, it’s my pleasure to announce that VLC for iOS is back on the App Store. It’s available free of charge in any country, requires iOS 5.1 or later and runs on any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

This is more than an upgrade of the initial version: it’s a full re-write. From the ground-up. Relying on the power of MobileVLCKit and its underlying libvlc, we started with modern video and audio output modules offering faster drawing, full support for 10bit H264 encodings, retina displays and lower latency.
Some of the major features include:

Wi-Fi Upload - Allows users to upload files directly to the iOS version of VLC through a web browser on the PC or Mac.
Dropbox Integration - Play media directly from Dropbox or download it for offline playback.
Download from Web - Download files from any web server for offline playback
Network Streams - Play any network streams support by VLC media player for desktop operating systems
3rd-Party App Integration - Any app with a 'share' dialog can use VLC for iOS for media playback
Video Filters - Video playback can be modified for brightness, contrast, hue, saturation or gamma in real time.

To avoid further copyright issues, VLC for iOS is fully open-source and the video playback and library kits are available for integration by other developers. An SDK will be released later this summer.

VLC has already launched on the Australian and New Zealand App Stores and will be launching on others throughout the day and evening. It should be available in the U.S. at 11PM Eastern time. [App Store Direct Link]

Armageddon (1998)

by noreply@blogger.com (Carlos M. Reis)

‘American Dad!’ Moving To TBS In 2014

by THE DEADLINE TEAM

post thumbnail

BREAKING….TBS continues to boost up its slate to provide better primetime lead-ins to its flagship talk show Conan. The network announced today that has picked up Fox’s animated comedy American Dad! and will air it beginning in 2014 — the Turner net has ordered 15 episodes of the 20th Century Fox TV-produced series’ 11th season. The series from Seth MacFarlane premiered on Fox in 2005 and has been a long-standing member of that network’s Sunday animation block. American Dad! will kick off its 10th (and now last) season on Fox on September 29. Under the new deal, fellow Turner network Adult Swim will present encores of each episode after initial airings on TBS. TBS and Adult Swim already air reruns of American Dad! and MacFarlane’s Family Guy throughout the networks’ lineups.

“American Dad! is a great fit for TBS, a favorite of comedy fans who like smart, irreverent humor with ample doses of biting wit and skewering satire,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movie, in announcing the deal. “We look forward to welcoming Seth MacFarlane and the rest of his team as they bring this iconic show to TBS.”

Creators MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman are exec producers.

“American Dad! is a brilliantly inventive series, and TBS’s desire to platform new episodes demonstrates the enduring power of great and compelling content,” commented Twentieth Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden. “Seth, Mike and Matt have created an incredibly rich world of unique characters, and we couldn’t be happier that they will be able to continue to tell their trademark brand of subversive, hilarious stories to their millions of fans.”

Rembrandt van Rijn's 407th Birthday

Rembrandt van Rijn's 407th Birthday

Date: July 15, 2013

Often regarded as one of the greatest artists in European history, Rembrandt van Rijn is a master not only of form and light but also in portraying human emotion.  In his body of work, Rembrandt depicts subjects that range from portraits, to energetic landscapes, to poignant allegories.  Such allegories often draw inspiration from his personal hardships and still speak to viewers hundreds of years after his lifetime.

Most striking, perhaps, is his series of self portraits.  These paintings are an honest recording of Rembrandt's aging visage and technical skill.  One can see his tastes shift from the classical sfumato (or soft) approach in his early twenties to a more expressive and almost impressionistic technique in his fifties.  Ahead of his time, Rembrandt applies his paint with great volume and confidence while many of his contemporaries continue to glaze (or paint in thin layers).

His paintings also reveal a passion for innovation-- some of his works have unusual substances mixed into the pigments.  Glass and wheat flour, though not often found on most artists' palettes, appear on some of Rembrandt's canvases.  He may have mixed them in to alter the texture of the paint; to push the medium forward.

It was surprising to realize that the doodle team had not yet celebrated this artistic legend.  With a four-year degree in illustration, I realized that it was going to be no small task to emulate one of the greatest painters of all time.  Encouraged by my team, however, I charged into the project with fragile confidence.  Below are some photos I snapped throughout the process:

Created with water-soluble oil paint, this is the first quick study I created to warm up.  I quickly realized that this is not how Rembrandt painted.

A second (poorly drawn) study revealed that Rembrandt started with an underpainting, glazed, then applied his lightest values thickly.  I found that I did not have the proper brushes to achieve anything near the texture of his paintings.

Finally armed with boar's hair brushes, I hesitantly approached the underpainting of the final piece on a 4' x 2' canvas.  The drawing is not even close to perfect-- I would pay the price for this carelessness later.

This is about three quarters into the painting.

The final painting in the photo studio.

Creating a master copy of a paragon of art was a humbling experience.  The sureness of his brush and the ripeness of his skill is apparent in every stroke.  Aside from his technical prowess, however, the sincerity in this face is something I will never forget.

A concrete iPhone case, because why not?

by John-Michael Bond

Sure. You'd be forgiven for thinking that once we had iPhone cases that double as a weapon we'd have reached our logical limit. We're done! Pack it up boys. All the iPhone cases have been designed. That's what we thought. And then we caught a look at Posh-Projects brand new "Luna" iPhone case, a beautiful piece of pop art that gives your phone the appearance of the moon's surface.

Oh, and it's made of concrete.

The Korean company has already sold out of the first run of the cases, but more are expected for sale soon. Each case has a unique lunar design thanks to the creation process, and since it's made of concrete, you can bet it's going to be one of the sturdiest cases you'll ever own. What we don't know is what kind of damage rubbing the glass back of your iPhone against concrete, even the smoothest concrete, will do. But when you're phone looks like it was carved from a moon rock, would you really care?

You can find Posh-Projects full presentation about the Luna here. It's beautifully photographed, even if we have no idea how useful it actually is.
