Farewell, Ron Swanson

by Matt Welch

Never forget! |||Over at The Daily Beast, Asawin Suebsaeng has a fun little piece talking about the embarrassing lengths to which libertarian and conservative publications and organizations have gone to venerate one of the best libertarian characters in the history of television, Ron Swanson of Parks and Recreation, which airs its final episode tonight. Sample:

This was an outstanding episode. |||Swanson's demeanor and staunchly libertarian outlook have made him a (regrettably fictional) hero to conservative observers. "He is, let's say, an unlikely hero in the age of Obama," National Review declared. "Ron Swanson's 12 wisest quotes about the government," The Daily Caller compiled. "Swanson's staunch libertarianism is sprinkled throughout the series—and he's a hero of the show, not a heel of all the jokes (as you would expect from Hollywood)," the Heartland Institute raved. "[A] lovably awesome libertarian character," Reason blogged. The libertarian Cato Institute has cited the character both on social media and in policy analysis. And The Washington Free Beacon named Swanson "Man of the Year" in 2012.

|||Moreover, Republican congressman Joe Wilson (of "You lie!" fame) wrote an op-ed for Politico in 2010 that praised Swanson: "America has a new champion of limited government and spending restraint," the piece reads. "Regrettably, Swanson is not running for Congress."

I'm quoted in the article, but the best quip comes from Luke Kenworthy of the Kochtastic youth-issues organization Generation Opportunity:

Ron didn't just teach us about taxation through a lunchbox demonstration—he also spoke eloquently on the more important subjects, like craftsmanship and bacon.

Reason on Ron Swanson here, including John Payne’s November 2011 piece "Ron Swanson vs. the State."

Davis Love III named Ryder captain

ESPN, by Bob Harig Posted By: earlybird- Wed, 25 48 2015 12:48:29 GMT PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. '' Davis Love III was named 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup captain on Tuesday, becoming just the second American in the 80'plus'year history of the event to get a second opportunity after losing in the first. Love, 50, was the U.S. captain when the Americans suffered an excruciating 14 ½ to 13 ½ defeat in 2012 at Medinah, where Europe staged a Sunday rally to overcome a 4'point deficit. "I´m here with the same goal as 2012, but not as the same captain," Love said. "I don´t think we have to make massive changes. We have to make small

Ancient Buddhist Statue Reveals Amazing Hidden Surprise

by delana
[ Filed under Vintage & Retro & in the Antique Gadgets category ]

statue contains mummified monk

This 1,000-year-old golden statue has left China for the very first time, and already it’s having a grand global adventure. It made its way to Meander Medical Center in the Netherlands where some hospital employees decided to take a look inside with a CT scan – and what they found was seriously amazing.

Instead of more metal or even a hollow framework, the hospital staff found a mummified human being within the statue. They believe the remains are those of the Buddhist master Liuquan who died around 1100 C.E. That in itself would be a pretty noteworthy find, but the researchers also discovered that the body most likely underwent self-mummification.

examination of mummified statue

After taking samples of the thoracic and abdominal cavities, doctors discovered all kinds of rotten material (as in, not the regular stuff you’d find in a dead person) and scraps of paper bearing ancient Chinese writing that has yet to be deciphered. In other known examples of self-mummification, however, the organs were not removed – making Liuquan an enigma wrapped in a shiny golden shell.

Although the self-mummification theory hasn’t yet been proven in regards to this particular statue, the process has been observed among other Buddhist monks. They prepare their bodies and organs to defy decay after death by ingesting certain herbs and other substances that actually lead to their eventual death. As this is the first Buddhist mummy to ever be studied in the West, Liuquan has a lot of secrets to tell.

VID: Silk Road, Online Freedom, and Why the Prosecution (and Conviction) of Ross Ulbricht Should Worry Us All

by Nick Gillespie

The trial of Ross Ulbricht, the accused mastermind behind the online marketplace Silk Road, ended earlier this month with his conviction on all 7 counts related to running the website.

Prior to this  judgment, Reason TV spoke with his mother, Lyn Ulbricht, about the prosecution of her son. Watch below for the full interview.

Interview by Nick Gillespie. Shot and edited by Jim Epstein. Additional camera by Anthony L. Fisher. About 22 minutes. Original release date was November 26, 2014, and original writeup is below.

"I am fighting for my son," says Lyn Ulbricht, the mother of 30-year-old Ross Ulbricht, who faces life in prison as the alleged creator and operator of "Silk Road," an illicit online marketplace that was shut down by the feds last year. "But [this fight] is bigger than Ross, and I think one website is far less dangerous than the government trampling on our rule of law and the consitution."

Ulbricht sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to talk about why she believes the government's case against Ross broadly violates his constitutional rights and threatens online freedom.

For more on Ross Ulbricht and the government's case against Silk Road, read Brian Doherty's feature story in the December 2014 issue of Reason magazine, "How Buying Drugs Online Became Safe, Easy, and Boring."

VID: Top 5 NFL Hits...to Taxpayers

by Meredith Bragg

If you don't think that a sports league pulling in upwards of $10 billion per year is a not-for-profit worthy of getting your tax dollars to build stadiums, there may be some good news. Obama's last budget proposal included reduced tax incentives for stadiums and two NFL teams are now aiming to raise private funds for a stadium near Los Angeles. Though the Raiders and the Chargers are still seeking stadium subsidies in their home markets and may just be using the plan to put pressure on their respective cities to pony up more dough, taxpayers may have finally had enough.

Watch below for Reason TV's countdown of the Top 5 NFL Hits...to Taxpayers.

Reverse Vending: Machines Recycle Cans for Cash, Rewards

by delana
[ Filed under Various Gizmos & in the Gadgets category ]

envirobank reverse recycling machines

Disposable drink containers are among the most ubiquitous waste generated by first-world populations. Some parts of the world have opted to charge deposits for drink containers: a few pennies which are refunded when you recycle the containers. In Australia, the container deposit plan is just starting to take shape, and they’ve implemented a clever way to encourage recycling.

Cash for Containers” is a simple plan. You just take your empty cans and bottles to reverse vending machines. When you put a container in, you get vouchers, cash, or rewards. The machines let you choose your own reward – bus vouchers, movie tickets, chocolate bars, and various other choices.

envirobank container recycling

Envirobank, the company behind the machines, hopes that the initiative will help Australians recycle much more of their waste. Cans and plastic bottles take hundreds of years to break down, so paying that extra 10 cents per drink and then getting rewarded for recycling the containers seems like an effective plan to keep huge amounts of garbage out of the landfill.

David Goldhill on Dying and End-of-Life Care

The near-universality of a slow death is a triumph of modern medicine. Our success in managing what had been rapidly fatal diseases has essentially created a new phase of life—a period of physical and mental decline that can last for many years. But as David Goldhill observes in Reason’s March 2015 issue, rather than take advantage of the possibilities of these bonus years, we've allowed them to be defined by the ultimately futile struggle merely to survive. We've turned over the last years of our lives to the medical profession.

Different Shutter Speeds for Different situations

by info@photographytalk.com (Sean)

445466 ML

In this article we shall be discussing the use of different shutter speeds in different kinds of situations. Before we elaborate on that, let's define what shutter speed is. Shutter speed determines the amount of time the shutter of the camera remains open to expose the image sensor to the light passing through the lens. Shutter speed can be adjusted to achieve different effects, according to what the photographer desires. There are two major things that the shutter speed affects in a picture:

    • Exposure
    • Motion

Learn Photography

EXPOSURE:

As the classification of shutter speed defines the time for sensor exposure, it should be fairly clear that slow shutter speed helps achieve higher brightness in the picture in comparison to a faster shutter speed. For example, let's assume a shutter speed of 1/60 of a second. Keeping all the other aspects of exposure constant, if the shutter speed  is increased to 1/125 of a second, the picture gets darker than before. If however, the shutter speed is decreased to 1/30 of a second, it will increase the brightness of the image. Slower shutter speeds are required in low light conditions such as night photography. Faster shutter speeds are recommended when you are shooting in very bright light conditions.

Slower shutter speed used to create circular blurred effect.

MOTION:

Apart from brightness, shutter speed is used to affect motion in the picture. It is this aspect of shutter speed that can be used to achieve many artistic effects.

Fast Shutter Speeds:

Have you seen those amazing pictures where action taking place is frozen in time? Fast shutter speeds can be used to stop motion and avoid motion blur. When shooting moving objects, the correct shutter speed depends upon how fast the object is moving and how far away the object is from the camera. As a general rule, for instance, I recommend a minimum shutter speed of 1/2000 of a second for capturing birds in flight without panning. A minimum shutter speed of 1/60 of a second is recommend for capturing people moving at a normal pace without any motion blur. You might want to Increase the shutter speed to 1/250 of a second to capture running children. Remember these recommendations are just a starting point. If you're experiencing motion blur, increase the shutter speed.

Slow Shutter Speeds:

Slow shutter speeds can be used for stunning effects in your photos. Slow shutter speeds can give you those "cotton candy" effects in moving water, light painting effects, automobile light trails and starlight trails. A shutter speed of one second or more is recommended to get beautiful, smooth effects with moving water. Try starting with a shutter speed of 30 seconds for great light painting photos from car lights. Start trails may require exposure times of 5 minutes or longer, which will generally require using the "B" shutter setting and a timer.

Now that you know the basics of how you can use shutter speed for various effects, don't limit yourself to these examples. Experiment and learn. You'll have some fun and probably create some amazing images, too!
