Boston Dynamics made a giraffe robot
Boston Dynamics — the (for now) Alphabet-owned company behind BigDog and other impressive machines — has just unveiled its latest robot: SpotMini, an all-electric, smaller version of its Spot robot.
One notable change: the 'bot can now be equipped with an elongated neck, which it shows off in a demonstration by helpfully picking up a glass and putting it in the dishwasher. Cute, and functional:
And here it is rebelling against human-centric beverage consumption:
Boston Dynamics' robots are notable for not falling over, even when given a good kick. But as its most cartoonish creation, this one apparently has one weakness: banana-peel-like obstructions, casually strewn on the floor:

Microsoft buys Wand Labs to add more natural language tech to messaging apps and bots
Microsoft, hot on the heels of the news that it is buying LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, has announced yet another acquisition, this time in the area of natural language and artificial intelligence: the company has purchased Wand Labs, a startup that develops messaging apps — and specifically technology behind them that lets them act more intelligently (beyond and alongside our own… Read MoreAlienware is also working on one of those VR backpacks

This USB adapter is Microsoft’s final admission that Kinect failed
Microsoft had a bold vision for its Xbox One console that involved its Kinect accessory. While the Kinect for Xbox 360 was one of the most popular game console accessories of all time, a bundled Kinect with the Xbox One introduced a $100 price premium over the PS4 competition. Despite switching course and unbundling the Kinect, Microsoft hasn't recovered yet in the games console battle, with reports suggesting it has sold 20 million Xbox One consoles vs. Sony's 40 million PS4 shipments.
Microsoft unveiled a new Xbox One S console yesterday, and it's 40 percent smaller with a Bluetooth controller. It looks great, and it's arguably the console Microsoft should have shipped originally. While it looks Surface-inspired, sources familiar with...
MIT scientists built a neural network that can pass the ‘Audio Turing Test’
“In order to know what sound to play, the computer has to know something about the object being struck, and about the action that produced the sound,” Andrew Owens, one of the PhD students who worked on the project, tells Digital Trends.

Luxembourg Establishes €220 Million Fund for Space Mining
Luxembourg has had its sights on space mining for quite a while. Now, it’s betting big: it has just set up a €200 million ($227 million) fund to entice space mining companies to set up shop in the tiny nation, in a bid to become the “Silicon Valley” of space resources.
The initiative will primarily benefit two American companies: Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources. The fund will be used to finance asteroid survey missions that will be launched within three years. Luxembourg will also invest in research and development for technologies needed to identify, extract, and process minerals, water, and other valuable space-based commodities.

A press conference on June 3 of last year also hinted that the fund may be used to make direct capital investments to become shareholders in the two companies.
Luxembourg is also looking at drafting legislation that legalizes the right of companies to extract and own materials on asteroids, the moon, and other celestial bodies. This would be similar to prior legislation passed by the U.S. just last year.

Watch Google's AI master the infamously difficult Atari game Montezuma's Revenge
If we want to create artificial intelligence that can teach itself how the world works, it needs to be curious. This has been a recurring theme in the world of AI in recent years, and newly-published research from Google's DeepMind division shows exactly why this quintessentially human quality is important for making computers smart.

Forget Siri and Cortana. Soon, you may be able to give commands to machines just by “thinking” them.
A team of researchers and engineers at Melbourne University are developing a stentrode, a tiny implant to be placed into a blood vessel next to the brain, which can record electric activity from a specific part of the brain. The information will then be decoded and interpreted into thoughts.
Dr. Tom Oxley, research lead, said the study is purely focused on harnessing the possibilities of bionics to improve the medical industry, particularly in the treatment of paralysis and epilepsy.
Using the stentrode implant, people who are suffering from paralysis or severe spinal cord injuries can use their thoughts to control the movement systems attached to their bodies, allowing them to interact with their surroundings again.

Another goal of the study is to find out what’s happening in the brains of people who are having uncontrollable seizures and be able to predict and address the issue. The team has to develop a custom-fitted decoding algorithm to translate the electric brain activity into useful information.
To date, the research team says they have already recorded successful results during animal trials, which were published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, and are keen to get started in human clinical trials by 2017.

Asu Cast One smartwatch with built-in projector is now a real thing you can buy
In China. Dreams, they arrive. A watch runs Android. 1280 x 800 laser projector. For American dollar, about $458.
Sorry I've just been reading a lot of Google Translate lately. The Asu Cast One, announced back in January, is patently crazy. A watch that has a built-in projector, and can project the future of user interfaces on the back of your hand, or, like, a movie on a nearby wall. You can buy one now in China for 2,999 Yuan. That's what I'm talking about. So now I guess I need to move to China. Brb.

On aime !
