New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and this morning Carolina Herrera presented her collection for fall 2014. While some other designers are in a dark mood— showing a lot of black for autumn — Herrera's team added some deep eggplant, royal blue and bright orange amongst the black, navys and grays.

Betsey Johnson: For the Intergalactic Pretty Woman In You

The theme of Betsey Johnson's fall-winter '14 collection is "hot," and hot it most certainly was (apparently, the show started late because it had been held for a tardy Paris Hilton, 2000s-era patron saint of the phrase "that's hot).

Bathroom Trend: A Tub Inside The Shower

by Rachel Wray Thompson
Erin H

this is gorgeous. my whole bathroom is the size of that shower, though.

This past year multiple clients requested something for their bath that I had never heard of before: putting the tub inside of the shower. And by this, they meant they want one glass-enclosed 'wet room' for bathing and showering. This configuration has an airy spa-like feel and look, and takes up less space than designing separate tub and showering areas.

Naeem Khan: For The Elegant Art Deco Siren in You

Naeem Khan showed his fall-winter collection yesterday; he says he was inspired by Cabaret and the boudoir — perhaps not in the most subtle manner (the show opened with what was essentially a formal bathrobe), but in a way that beautifully combined elegance and sensuality.

Beet and Turnip Gratin

by Brandon Matzek
Erin H

i'm not a fan of beets, but look at this thing! it's gorgeous! it might convince me to eat beets, it's so pretty.

Beets and turnips for Valentine’s Day?  Who would have thought?

Beet and Turnip GratinTo be honest, not me.  I had originally tested this recipe out as a new side dish for my Thanksgiving extravaganza.  It didn’t make the cut, because I already had so many other side dishes in the works, and there wasn’t enough space in the oven to prepare this blushing beauty.

My Beet and Turnip Gratin sat dormant in my photo archives until this past weekend when I was menu planning for Valentine’s Day.  Sitting at my computer struggling to find a VDay side dish, I suddenly remembered.  A vibrant mix of red, pink and yellow, this Beet and Turnip Gratin is equally tasty and beautiful.  Rich and earthy, the gratin is made with a variety of beets, turnips, shallots, garlic, thyme and chicken stock.  The skillet cooks covered until the vegetables start to soften, then uncovered until the top is just crisp and golden.  Finished with a flurry of chopped chive, my Beet and Turnip Gratin would pair nicely with beef, chicken, pork or fish.  Continue reading for the recipe.

Staff Picks: What's Your Favorite Soup in Chicago?

VIEW SLIDESHOW: Staff Picks: What's Your Favorite Soup in Chicago?

Hang in there, Chicago. While we are still dealing with something that is honestly being referred to as a "Polar Plunge," doesn't that sound far less frightening than a Polar Vortex? Plus, even though the Chicago Tribune threw enough question marks in the title to make you wonder whether the paper is being honest, by Thursday the temperature might actually creep above freezing for the first time in two weeks. I know! So, what should you do in the meantime to stave off the cold? You should eat soup.

While we've already catalogued some of our favorite winter soups, we've had the chance to do a lot of research since then, so we decided that it was time to see what our staff likes to slurp during a real chill. The results are as varied as you'd expect, covering a number of different cuisines in as many neighborhoods.

Take a look at our picks, weigh in with your own, and let's get through this last ridiculously cold stretch—hopefully, I didn't just jinx us.

Russia's anti-gay laws have been a major focus in the lead-up to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and during his address at today's opening ceremony IOC president Thomas Bach made a strong statement against "any form of discrimination" and in favor of tolerance. Viewers worldwide heard the statement; NBC viewers in the U.S. did not, because the network edited it out.

Nurse Shares Truly, Horribly Ghastly Medical Experience on Reddit

This is the worst thing I've read in my entire life, so brace yourselves — the Gothamist has unearthed a Reddit thread asking doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to share their "most gory, disgusting or worst medical experience." As one might predict, it's not something you'd ever want to read or think about unless you're either masochistic or dangerously curious (being the latter, I did, and I quite literally almost passed out at my desk).

How Often Do You Really Need to Shower?

by Tracy Moore on Jezebel, shared by Tessa Miller to Lifehacker
    Erin H

as often as you feel like showering. MYSTERY SOLVED

How Often Do You Really Need to Shower?

Showering is about three things: Hygiene, cultural acceptance, and personal preference. But this doesn't make any clearer how often it's necessary. I'm not a daily shower type. I like the relaxation of showering, but I hate the squeaky clean feeling of super dry/tight skin, heavily moisturized skin from moisturizing soap, and the super feathery clean shampoo hair sensation. But my husband takes a hot soapy shower every single day and thinks I'm weird. Am I? I decided to find out.

Fill Up on Vegetarian Indian Food at Annapurna in Rogers Park

    by Mike Gebert
    Erin H

hey suze, let's go to lunch!

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-exterior-edit.jpg

If there's anywhere in this town I'll gladly give up meat, it's the 2500 to 2600 blocks of west Devon. That strip is home to two vegetarian restaurants where I'll eat happily and without the least sense of deprivation, Udupi Palace and Annapurna. Udupi Palace, famous for three-foot-long dosas, a kind of crispy pancake, has always been a bit posh and upscale by Devon standards, but Annapurna to its west was long one of the street's dives, a tatty snack shop and grocery with a grumpy old man running the place.

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-tv-edit.jpg

Now it has granite countertops and flat screen TVs running Indian musicals from the 1960s, and an apparently younger and hipper staff. A lot of spots along Devon have gotten that kind of facelift as all those Indian doctors and tech guys put money back into the immigrant community where they came from. But even spiffed up, Annapurna's soul is still in modest snacks served in institutional plastic serving trays, everyday Indian street food.

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-chole-edit.jpg

One I particularly like is chole bhatura. It's actually two things—chole is a spicy stew of chickpeas in a brown gravy or curry, and bhatura are puffy breads made with maida, a very finely milled flour.

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-bhatura-edit.jpg

It's supposed to be a breakfast dish, though there's nothing about it that accords with Western ideas of breakfast-- it's as robust and spicy as any Indian lunch or dinner dish. (And anyway, Annapurna doesn't open until 11 a.m.)

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-chilies-edit.jpg

Here it comes on a platter dotted with other things. There are onions, a couple of chunks of jalapeño, a little pile of what looks like barbecued beef (it's actually chiles, stewed and made into a stringy paste).

    20140127-annapurna-devon-indian-vegetarian-sweet-edit.jpg

And there's a little pile of something sweet—it looks like mashed rice or bread, with a sweet taste to it. Maybe someone knows its name, but I don't.

What fascinates me about this platter is trying to puzzle out how it's all meant to work. You scoop up the chole with the bhatura, obviously, but I find it hard to see how it needs onion or chiles along the way. And then the sweet stuff—does that somehow work with the chole, or is it relief from the spice? Is that what makes it breakfast, the little hint of sweetness with the texture of Malt-O-Meal? There's a whole different conception of how foods work together here, that I know I barely understand even as I enjoy it thoroughly—and, incidentally, don't miss the meat a bit.

Comedian Celebrates MLK Day by Tweeting 'I Love You' at Racists

He combed Twitter for racist tweets, but instead of shaming or raging at their authors, he simply wrote something patient and kind and then added, "I love you." The primary revelation: Racists DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO when a black person is nice to them.
