Tammy Duckworth Will Be America's First Senator to Give Birth in Office

Mazels!

Tammy Duckworth, a Democratic Senator from Illinois, is expecting her second child in April—a first for the long history of the institution, which has often been populated by men who might genuinely think that babies arrive in a flurry of scrounged-up towels and boiled water.

This Photo of a Completely Peeled Pomegranate Is Weirdly Disturbing — Food News

by Elizabeth Licata

Pomegranates are such a wonderful fruit. They're full of healthful antioxidants, and they add color and flavor to everything from salads to cocktails. Pomegranates are as good with eggplant as they are with chocolate — or you can just eat them straight and enjoy the way the seeds explode into tart, red juice when you bite into them.

Sure, it can be a lot of work to get the seeds out, but all that labor just makes the payoff seem more special. And on top of all that, pomegranates just look pretty, with all those dark, red arils lined up like little jewels. That is, until someone takes all the peels completely off and leaves just the fruit, and then the pomegranates look frankly terrifying.

Let's be honest about Aziz Ansari

Erin H

Here's my opinion, CNN. Women are conditioned from birth in this country to not rock the boat, to go along, to be compliant. Men who take knowing advantage of that (and let's be clear - when you put someone's hand on your penis and they remove it, over and over again, you are KNOWINGLY pressuring them to do something they obviously don't want to do) while masquerading as allies are more dangerous in many ways than overt creepsters. Every argument in support of Aziz Ansari has said "we can't paint this with the same brush that we do rape". No one is putting this in the same category as rape. NO ONE. But we need to have this discussion and hold men accountable for taking advantage of this power imbalance, even men of color (and really wtf kind of argument is that, sheesh). So take your straw man argument and complicity and fuck right off.

This week, an anonymous accuser's account of regretting what appears to be consensual oral sex with actor and comedian Aziz Ansari exploded into the media, with the words "sexual misconduct" splashed across television news, the internet and newspapers.

10 Most WTF Moments of Lifetime's 'A Tale of Two Coreys'

Erin H

I recorded this last night and can't wait for an Alan-less evening so I can watch it!

How did it take so long to get a Lifetime movie about the Coreys? A Tale of Two Coreys is a tragic Hollywood rise-and-fall saga: two teen actors who make it big in the Eighties, complete with fire-hazard hair, drugs, groupies and pastel blazers. Corey Haim and Corey Feldman first paired up in the 1986 vampire classic The Lost Boys, and became inseparable BFFs, only to crash hard.

Aftermarket Parts in the Auto Repair Shop

by thisis
Erin H

Don't discount the aftermarket parts that are HIGHER quality than OEM though, like K&N filters or Brembo brakes systems. Then there's a completely different category for performance parts.

When you go to Home Depot or Lowes you are used to seeing brands that you are familiar with like John Deere, Honda or Scotts. These retailers are proud to be offering the products of these well respected companies and actively promote the sale of their goods and equipment. That is not always the case with auto parts.

Companies like Carquest or NAPA have supply contracts with parts companies like Gates for belts and hoses and Walker for exhaust parts. The manufacturers make their parts to the specifications of the retail marketers who put their name on them. So when you go to the auto parts store you are unaware of the manufacturer.

This is not the practice for all of the types of parts sold by NAPA or Carquest, since some of the parts like fuel pumps or oxygen sensors may be sold under the trademark of the manufacturer. Other auto parts retailers like Pep Boys have their in house brands like Prostart for alternators, starters and batteries. Who they choose as the supplier of these units may depend on outside factors like proximity to the marketplace and of course price, as well as the failure rate of the assembled part.

aftermarket-parts-in-the-auto-repair-shop

Then there are the aftermarket brands of the car manufacturers. The brand names for the big three are Motorcraft for Ford, Mopar for Chrysler and AC Delco for General Motors. This is where it really gets confusing. If you shop at a Chevy dealer’s parts department, you might buy an oil filter which carries a GM part number, although it may have come from the same manufacturing plant as an AC Delco filter and also be sold at an Advance Auto Parts store.

The term that installers look for is OEM. It stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Technicians and shop owners believe that the closer they can come to OEM the better. The reason is twofold – quality and fit.

Better quality cuts down on comebacks and the need to do the job the second time for free and better fit shortens the installation time and maximizes profits. The parts houses are very aware of this and know that Koyo, for instance, is the OEM supplier for the radiator in a certain year, make and model of vehicle. If they have that part available it becomes a distinct advantage over the competition.

Failure rates of some parts can be as high as 30 percent, so any strategy is worth considering if it reduces the probability of dealing with a defective part that generates an irate customer. It may be difficult to believe but 95 percent of the burden of resolving the aftermath of a failed part is borne by the installing shop.

The replacement part, of course, is supplied for free but the labor is often attributed to the cost of doing business. Labor claims are available from some suppliers but the paperwork can be burdensome and in a busy shop the inclination is to accommodate the customer and move on.

These are some of the conditions that warrant the margins which retail auto repair shops command on the auto parts they sell. This may not be evident to the occasional DIY’er who compares prices charged when visiting a professional shop to what he has paid in the past at a store like AutoZone.

Kentucky Pastor Molester Lawmaker’s Widow Vows To Finish Work Dead Husband Started

by Fakakta South
Erin H

She's going to molest the rest of the children in Kentucky?

Dan Johnson, the Kentucky GOP state Rep. and pastor, was the subject of an extremely thorough, months-long investigation; he also committed suicide after it came out. We felt terrible about this, honestly; you never want someone to make himself dead right after you called him out as part of a human centipede. Having read the report in its entirety, we are feeling less terrible — not because we ever take joy in someone taking his life, but because he seems to have been a mean, racist, grifty fraud, in addition to having allegedly molested his daughter’s friend. Now his wife, Rebecca Johnson — who told investigative reporters sniffing around her husband’s church they “would have blood on their hands” if they investigated an elected state official — wants to take over his state House seat for the 49th District. In a statement given to the AP the day after her husband posted a suicide note on Facebook and then shot himself on a bridge, “Rebecca Johnson referred to her husband’s death as a ‘high-tech lynching based on lies and half-truths.'”

First of all, I would like to respectfully request that white southerners stop using the word “lynching” — especially when they believe they are the “victims.” This was not mob violence perpetrated upon her husband outside of the law. It was two guys from Kentucky who were trying to figure out how a man in Bullitt County had used his “church” as both a place to hold political rallies and sell alcohol to drunken bikers (and minors) and managed to not only get away with that, but also get elected to the Kentucky General Assembly.

During the course of their investigation, these journalists learned that Dan Johnson, a man who posted terrible racist shit all over his Facebook feed during the 2016 election, had also paid a black woman who says she was sleeping with him back in 1985 to burn up his Cadillac for the insurance money.

These two journalists also learned that the first time Dan Johnson built a church in 2000 unironically called “Heart of Fire” it, too, mysteriously burned to the ground in a blaze that was ignited by some seriously flammable liquid that had been poured all over the hallway floor.

Although the investigation called the fire “suspect,” a settlement was made and the church was rebuilt, with a side residence called “The Pope’s House” — because Dan Johnson called himself the Pope when he wasn’t calling himself the Bishop. It was in this house in 2012 that Dan Johnson is accused of sexually assaulting Maranda Richmond when she was 17, like we talked about in our article right before he committed suicide. (That was admittedly a really weird feeling, to call a person out for filth and then have them die, but you should listen to the interview with Maranda Richmond that’s included with the KyCIR story, and you may feel okay about what all we had to say. We do.)

The point is, this man, who also seems to have created a resume filled with a wildly invented personal history like “White House Chaplain to GHWB, W, and Bill,” and something about working for the UN, and personally making the LA Riots safe, and he served at 9/11 as a pop-up morgue director who personally pulled all the bodies from the hands of first responders, has a wife named Rebecca and she wants to carry on this legacy.

Kentucky law decrees that vacancies in the Assembly due to the death of a representative are filled by special election. I imagine if this lady runs, it will be quite special indeed. After all the impossible to believe carrying-on in Alabama in the last few months, it’s truly hard to even speculate what will happen next — but I have a feeling we are gonna hear more on this story, and about Dan Johnson, no matter what.

Also, Mrs. Johnson, we are sorry for your loss.

8 Tips for Dealing with a Bigger-than-Usual Pile of Dishes — Holiday Cleanup

by Ayn-Monique Klahre
Erin H

1. fill the dishwasher and run it.
2. hand wash the hand-washables
3. leave the rest for when the dishwasher is done
4. profit??

Most of us have a weeknight dishwashing routine that's pretty manageable: Rinse (or not) some plates and silverware, throw them into the dishwasher, and wash the handful of pots, pans, and other utensils you used for food prep. If you're lucky, you have a partner to help dry the dishes and put them away to complete the task.

When it comes to the holidays, though, we use way more pots, pans, dishes, and silverware than ever, and facing that pile of dirty dishes can be daunting, to say the least. Truth: It may require a different cleaning M.O. than you use in your everyday cleanup. Here's what you should do.
