Sword Facts & Myths

• All Medieval swords weighed at least 12 pounds – FALSE

Most Medieval swords weighed around 2.5 lbs - even long hand-and-a-half and two-handed swords weighed less than 4 lbs.

• Medieval swords were not sharp - FALSE

Some surviving samples of Medieval swords are still sharp - many are razor-sharp.

• All swords should balance within 2” of the guard - FALSE

A sword’s balance should be determined by its function, not an arbitrary standard. Swords intended for cutting often balance 5 or 6 inches from the guard.

• Swords were made to cut through armour - FALSE

Period armour was often work- and case-hardened and curved such that it is difficult to hit at a right angle. Late Medieval thrusting swords, even the ones with a reinforced point, were used to thrust into the gaps in armour, not through the plate.

• Viking swords were heavier than Medieval swords - FALSE

The Viking sword was a very highly developed sword form. Often the blades were quite thin in cross section, and as a result, were often the same or lighter in overall weight than other similarsized swords.

• There is no such thing as the “perfect” sword - TRUE

There are only “perfect” swords for their intended purpose and the tastes of the owner.

• A “good” sword should be able to bend past 90 degrees without taking a set - FALSE

Flexibility is only one of the aspects of the steel properties that is important in a sword. Too flexible, and it is inefficient in the thrust and the cut. Too stiff and it is prone to breakage. Most makers are content if a sword will bend to 45 degrees without taking a set.

• Real swordfights were just like they are in the movies - FALSE

Swordfights in movies are choreographed for entertainment not authenticity. Edge to edge parries and fancy techniques are designed to heighten drama in a scene. An actual swordfight would be short, brutal and much quieter.

• Japanese swords are the sharpest and best swords ever made - FALSE

Japanese swords have many admirable qualities and were well-suited to their intended use, but they are not necessarily sharper or better than a properly designed and sharpened Medieval sword. 

• Medieval swordmakers were uneducated barbarians - FALSE

It is apparent from even a cursory study of surviving Medieval swords that blademakers and cutlers were highly skilled artisans with a profound understanding of mathematics and proportion.

• Not all swords should be as sharp as a razor - TRUE

The sword’s intended purpose is always the guide to use — thrusting swords are not intended for cutting, so some may not even have an edge at all, just a well-defined and reinforced point.

• Swords were tempered in urine or blood - FALSE

The steels smelted in Medieval Europe required either clean water or oil for quenching. Urine or blood would not allow a blade to temper properly.

• The “blood groove” is on a sword to release pressure in the wound and allow the sword to come back out - FALSE

“Blood groove” as a term is a recent invention — “fuller” is the proper name for the groove or grooves on a sword blade. The purpose of the fuller has nothing to do with “blood” — fullers reduce weight, assist in the proper distribution of mass in a blade, and help make the blade more stiff.

• A good sword can cut through a concrete pillar - FALSE

Swords were intended to cut through flesh, clothing, and (in earlier swords) leather or mail armour. They are not intended to cut wood, concrete or metal pillars, even though that is often seen in films.

• A sword will fall apart if you don’t clean the tang of the sword - FALSE

The tang of a sword, if properly made and the rest of the sword properly maintained, will not require any maintenance for generations of use. 

• Japanese folded steel is superior to European sword steel - FALSE

Folding steel was a technique used by Japanese smiths to try to get the best steel they could from very poor ore sources. Folded steel blades are more likely than modern monosteels to have large, unseen inclusions of impurities that may in fact critically weaken a blade. By folding the steel billet many, many times, they achieved a more even distribution of carbon and worked most of the impurities out of the steel. The result is stunningly beautiful, but we have to believe that if a 16th C Japanese smith had access to modern monosteels, he would have switched in a heartbeat.

• Pattern-welded steel is superior to mono-steel - FALSE

Like folding steel, pattern-welding was a technique used to try to get the best steel from very poor ore sources.  Pattern-welding is the art of hammering together, and then twisting and re-hammering layers of iron (often of varying carbon content). The Celts as far back as the 5th century BC may have made swords by pattern-welding, and this technique was used extensively until at least the end of the 10th century.  After this, better, more consistent iron ore was obtainable, and furnace technology improved, making this laborious technique unnecessary. Also like folded steel blades, pattern welded blades are more likely than modern monosteels to have large, unseen inclusions of impurities that may in fact critically weaken a blade.

• Swords are just big knives - FALSE

The design of a sword is far more complex than a knife. Flexibility  balance and vibration are far more critical in a sword-length blade than in a knife-length blade.

Die Grünen haben Eckpunkte für eine Urheberrechts-Reform vorgelegt. Sie wollen den Streitwert bei Urheberrechtsverletzungen im privaten Bereich auf 700 Euro begrenzen (das limitiert automatisch auch die Anwaltskosten bie Verfahren), den zivilrechtlichen Auskunftsanspruch wieder kippen und eine Bagatellklausel einführen. Na sowas, wollen die vielleicht doch gewählt werden? Wie hieß noch gleich diese andere Partei, die eigentlich für Internet und Urheberrecht und so zuständig sein wollte?

Kurze Durchsage der INSM: "Studiengebühren schaffen Chancengerechtigkeit".

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, nee klar. Die sind immer noch nicht weg von ihrer "Chancen"-Rhetorik. Im ehemaligen Nachrichtenmagazin war ja neulich auch eine Kolume von dem Fleischhauer, die ging auch in die Richtung. Studieren tun ja nur die Kinder reicher Eltern, daher sei das unsozial, wenn der Staat das Studium subventioniert, weil man da ja die Armen für das Studium der Reichen zahlen lassen würde.

Wer braucht schon Bildung im dem Staat, auf den INSM und die Rechten gerade hinarbeiten? Da reicht es, wenn die Familie von Lambsdorff sich ein Studium leisten kann für ihren Nachwuchs, und die Quandts. Der Rest soll bitte doof bleiben und Bohlen-TV konsumieren und ihr Geld für belanglosen Tand ausgeben, um die Wirtschaft am Laufen zu halten.

An der Stelle möchte ich auch mal die Folge 2 der ersten Staffel von Black Mirror empfehlen, die passt inhaltlich. Keine Ahnung wo man sich das in Deutschland am besten herholt. Die ganze Serie ist großartig, zumindest was ich bisher davon gesehen habe. Ist aber nichts für Kinder, und man sollte sich auch Zeit nehmen, wenn man das guckt, und nicht nur nebenher hingucken. Und zwischen Episoden nen Tag Pause machen, um den Erkenntnissen Zeit zum Reifen zu lassen.

Beim Online-Banking hat man es ja so häufig mit Vollversagern zu tun, da ist es schön, mal jemanden zu sehen, der das professionell macht. Wo man so richtig sehen kann, wie sich da jemand Gedanken gemacht hat. Wells Fargo zeigt, wie sowas aussehen kann. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Dabei haben Vertreter dieses Trendsports nun nach einem kunstvollen Aufstieg dieses Möbelstück zurückgelassen. Die Botschaft dieses Experiments ist durch aus gesellschaftskritisch zu verstehen: “Nur an der Spitze sitzt es sich bequem.”

Bug des Tages: Sudo lässt einen auch ohne Passwort root werden, wenn die Systemzeit auf 0 steht. Der Lacher ist, dass man wohl bei einigen heutigen Kinderunixen nicht mehr Superuser sein muss, um die Systemzeit zu ändern. Ich verwende ja sowas nicht, aber ich hörte, bei Ubuntu sei das z.B. so.

Update: Die Sudo-Sprallos veröffentlichen ernsthaft keine PGP-Signaturen für ihre Releases?!? Au weia.

Update: Oh und wo wir gerade bei peinlichen Bugs waren: Ubuntu fixt einen Buffer Overflow in cfingerd. Wo kommt der Bug her? Aus einem Ubuntu-Patch für cfingerd. Erinnert ein bisschen an das OpenSSL-Dingens damals.

Die Schönste Germanin hat in den USA noch nie Bier getrunken, sagt sie, sondern immer nur Wasser mit einem seltsamen Geschmack und Pseudo-Schaum. Dieser Autor ist auf solchen Reisen zu beschäftigt damit, sein chronisches Root-Beer-Defizit auszugleichen, um sich mit etwas banalem wie Bier abzugeben. Aber Klagen von Deutschen über das “waschwasserartige” Bier in den USA sind fast so häufig wie die über das Fehlen von Graubrot.

Nur, am Zustand des amerikanischen Biers sind Deutsche schuld.

Anlässlich einer Klage in den USA gegen große Brauerei-Konzerne wegen des Wassergehaltes von, tief Luft holen, Budweiser, Michelob, Michelob Ultra, Hurricane High Gravity Lager, King Cobra, Busch Ice, Natural Ice, Bud Ice, Bud Light Platinum und Bud Light Lime geht das Magazin Slate auf die Geschichte des Alkoholgehalts in amerikanischen Bieren ein. Zusammengefasst waren die Amerikaner Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts auf dem besten Weg, eine Nation von Alkoholikern zu werden, denn außer Whiskey und starkem Bier gab es kaum etwas zu trinken. Der Alkohol-Konsum pro Kopf lag bei etwa 26,5 Litern pro Jahr, verglichen mit heute 9,5 Litern.

Die Temperance Movement — Abstinenz-Bewegung — wurde von Abolitionism — Anti-Sklaverei-Bewegung — allerdings in den Hintergrund gedrängt: Die Politiker wollten sich nicht zwei kontroverse Themen auf einmal aufhalsen. Die Temperance Movement würde bis nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg warten müssen, um die Prohibition durchsetzen zu können.

Als sie sich im 19. Jahrhundert nach einem Plan B umschaute, bemerkte sie die deutschen Einwanderer, die weniger Probleme mit Alkoholismus zu haben schienen (wir hatten in unserem Eintrag über Biergesetze in den USA darauf hingewiesen, dass binge drinking traditionell ein größeres Problem in angelsächsischen Staaten ist als in germanischen).

Man nahm sich diese Deutschen zum Vorbild:

Über die Jahre wurden die Inhaltsstoffe verändert und der Alkoholgehalt erhöht (ja, erhöht). Die Entwicklung führte direkt zu den heutigen Massenmarkt-Sorten.

Zur Ehrenrettung der amerikanische Biertrinker muss gesagt werden, dass die microbreweries und craft breweries — kleinere Brauer — seit einigen Jahren deutlich zulegen, mit Absatzanstiegen von gerne zehn Prozent pro Jahr. Der Anteil am Markt nach Volumen liegt allerdings noch unter fünf Prozent. Dazu kommt eine wachsende homebrewing-Bewegung, zu deren bekannteren Vertretern der Schauspieler Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher bei Star Trek: Next Generation) gehört.

Was uns schließlich zu American Beer bringt, einer Filmdokumentation über amerikanische Brauereien. Die Prämisse:

Five friends leave New York City by minivan and set out to visit 38 breweries in 40 days.

Irgendwie scheint sich diese Art von US-Rundreise bei deutschen Touristen noch nicht herumgesprochen zu haben. Die Schönste Germanin übrigens sagt, das beste amerikanische Bier stamme aus dem Napa Valley und werde wine genannt.

Makers of Linux-based operating systems have been letting you boot Fedora, Ubuntu, and other popular software from a removable CD, DVD, or flash drive for years. Now you can use your Android phone instead.

DriveDroid is a free app that lets you store a Linux ISO on your phone, plug it into a PC and boot from that disk image.

When you boot from this sort of disk image the entire operating system is loaded into your computer’s RAM. That means that the OS should run pretty quickly (depending on what kind of hardware you’re using), even though it’s booting using files grabbed from your phone over a USB connection.

It also means that you can boot into an operating system such as Ubuntu or Chromium OS without overwriting Windows or whatever other software’s already on your PC’s hard drive.

There are a few good reasons to do this sort of thing. It gives you a chance to test an operating system before deciding whether to install it. You can also boot a Linux-based operating system on a PC as a sort of repair utility — you can reformat the hard drive, recover files, or perform other operations if there’s something wrong with your primary operating system.

Don’t have a Linux ISO handy? No problem. DriveDroid also includes an option to download popular Linux-based operating systems including Arch, CrunchBang, Debian, Fedora,OpenSUSE, and Ubuntu.

The easiest way to test out DriveDroid is to download SliTaz, an operating system that only takes up 35MB. It’s one of the quickest operating systems you can download, and it’s a light-weight OS that doesn’t require a bleeding edge computer to run well.

You can also use the app to create a blank USB image which you can use to store files that are accessible to a PC.

DriveDroid requires a rooted phone or tablet and a USB cable to work properly. Some operating systems and some Android devices may not work as well as others.
