It's not always easy for nurses to find the right vein for an intravenous drip -- the target vessels are sometimes hidden below the skin. Evena Medical's new Eyes-On smart glasses may make those injections a little easier. The Moverio-based eyewear overlays a 3D blood vessel map on the patient, helping the nurse insert even a tricky IV line on the first try. It can also tap into a hospital's medical records and share imagery with doctors in remote locations. There's no word on just which hospitals will use Eyes-On when it ships in the first quarter of 2014, but don't be surprised if it makes your hospital stay a little more bearable in the near future. We already knew that Nissan's eye-catching electric car concept looked fit for a superhero, but it's honestly not just comic-book premise. A Nissan spokesperson told us that the BladeGlider is a very early prototype aimed towards for-real vehicle production. To its credit, with some geometry skills and practice, you could probably fit two BladeGliders into a standard parking space. Perhaps even more incredibly, the BladeGlider also apparently uses less energy than Nissan's eponymous Leaf EV.

The car draws on a lot of design cues from the DeltaWing, a car that Nissan worked on and one that previously did the rounds at Le Mans, among other raceways. Development then judiciously plucked design and engineering pointers from the ZEOD RC, its hybrid electric race car. As you'd expect from a car that's striving towards the future, the twin doors rise upwards rather than swinging out. Sure, we've seen that before -- 30 years earlier -- but in this concept car the entire cockpit also pitches to the side to make space for the driver's exit or entrance. It's no solo car, however, and there's space for two passengers in the back. And that shape: the front of the car is a meter wide, opening up to 1.8 meters along the back. Does Kawasaki's new electric cycle have two wheels or four? Well, how about both? According to the conceptual sketches and a terse explanatory panel, the "J vehicle" concept EV can switch between a lie-down two-wheel Akira / Tron-baiting cycle and a four-wheel drive mode, with the latter designated as "comfort" mode. The model, revealed at this year's Tokyo Motor Show, is apparently powered by Kawasaki's biggest onboard battery pack, the Gigacell, although (any other) details aren't forthcoming. We dislike zoos. 

The Air Force launched 29 satellites into orbit from a NASA facility in Virginia on Tuesday evening, and one of them is the first to be built entirely by high school students, CNN reports.

Students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria, Va. built the TJ³Sat, a small "nanosatellite" weighing approximately 3 pounds and measuring about four inches on each side.

It took them seven years to build.

"It used to be that kids growing up wanted to be an astronaut," Andrew Petro, program executive for small spacecraft technology at NASA, said in a statement to Space.com. "I think we might be seeing kids saying, what they want to do is build a spacecraft. The idea here is that they really can do that."

From CNN:

Once in orbit, the "TJ³Sat will allow students and amateur radio users the opportunity to send and receive data from the satellite. Students and other users from around the world will be able to submit text strings to be uploaded to the TJ³Sat website," according to Orbital Sciences Corp, the developer and manufacturer of the Minotaur rocket.

The main payload being delivered by the Minotaur I rocket is the Air Force's Space Test Program Satellite-3, according to CNN. The high-schoolers satellite is among 28 other smaller ones called CubeSats.

A new study found that at the same body size, male noses are 10% larger than female noses, on average. The reason being that men have more lean muscle mass than women, which requires more oxygen for building and maintenance. Bigger noses can take in more oxygen.

Researchers previously suggested that nose size is influenced by body mass, an indication of different oxygen demands required for tissue maintenance. This is first long-term study to look at how nose size varies between men and women in relation to body size, and to determine when those physical differences begin to appear.

The study, recently published in the Journal of Physical Anthropology, observed the facial changes of 38 individuals (20 males and 18 females) of European descent from age three to their mid-twenties.

Even at the same body size, researchers found that male noses grow disproportionately larger than female noses around age 11. (The researchers used sitting height and trunk-frame size — calculated as the product of sitting height and pelvic bone width — as their two measures of body size).

The finding makes sense. The changes take off at the starting age of puberty, when males begin to grow more oxygen-hungry lean muscle mass, while females grow more body fat mass.

"During this period, approximately 95% of body weight gain in males is due to increased fat-free mass compared to 85% in females," the study says.

A large nose means more oxygen can be breathed in and transported in the blood to supply these oxygen-hungry muscles, researchers explained in a statement from the University of Iowa.

The new research shows that nose size is tightly linked to the demands of the respiratory system, rather than other features of the facial skeleton.

According to the study, this may also explain why modern human noses are smaller than those of our ancestors, like Neanderthals, who probably needed more oxygen to maintain their higher levels of muscle mass.

The first spacecraft aimed at figuring out where all the water on Mars went is set to launch at 1:28 p.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 18, from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

MAVEN, which stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, should arrive at the Red Planet in late September 2014. Its goal is to measure the composition of Mars' upper atmosphere, giving scientists clues about how the planet lost its atmosphere and surface water over time.

The mission is unique because it is the first Mars explorer to focus exclusively on Mars' upper atmosphere, rather than looking for chemical traces of water on Mars or signs that the planet could have once supported life (currently the objective of the Curiosity rover).

MAVEN will explore "the single biggest unexplored piece of Mars so far," Bruce Jakosky, the mission's principal investigator, said in a statement.

More than four billion years ago, scientists think that Mars has a thick atmosphere and was warm enough to support liquid water. Then, something happened. Mars was stripped of its thick atmosphere, oceans of flowing water disappeared, and Mars became the cold desert that we know today.

Scientists hope MAVEN will help solve the long-standing mystery of how Mars' climate changed so drastically.

This morning, Time's Newsfeed Editor Jessica Roy wrote about her experiences having ASMR - Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response - a strange and tingly sensation, she writes, that some people refer to as a brain orgasm.

Roy writes,

Whispering is a primary trigger, but anything from the sound a pen makes when drawing on a piece of paper to rhythmic, monotonous speech can spark an episode. And it’s not just about sounds. Having someone focus specifically on you–such as when an optometrist performs an eye exam or when your hairdresser cuts your bangs–can also invoke the same feeling; the sensation of someone gently tracing lines on your back or stroking your hair can incite that familiar fizzle.

ASMR invokes different feelings in different people. An aspect, Roy says, that makes it hard to describe the sensations or its catalysts to others. 

Roy created a video for Time, where she - in a whisper - explains ASMR.

There isn't much research surrounding ASMR, but that doesnt mean it isn't real. In fact, a huge online community has formed, filled with those who experience ASMR. The community originated from one YouTube upload of a woman whispering. 

According to Roy,

The acts required to trigger an ASMR are admittedly intimate. The sensation is compared to an orgasm because it can feel similar, just centered at the top of the body instead of the bottom, so you’d be forgiven for confusing ASMRs for something sexual. But perhaps that’s another reason they are so difficult to decipher, especially if you don’t experience them yourself: ASMRs are intimate but not sexual, feel-good but not orgasmic, private but not secret.

In 2012, Rhodri Marsden wrote about his ASMR for The Independent, admitting that he enjoyed watching QVC because it made him feel "nice," though he couldn't explain why.

"I once saw a man talk for 10 minutes about the benefits of purchasing a pack of 10 blank video cassettes," Marsden explains in his piece, "and it left my head gently buzzing in a way that's hard to describe."

He cited the video below, of a woman named Maria who goes by the pseudonym GentleWhispering on YouTube. Maria has 173 videos for those who experience ASMR, some with over one million views.

"Maria spends almost 20 minutes demonstrating how to fold towels," Marsden writes. "I absolutely adore it. I watch it all the time. My friends think I'm mad."

Now there is a Reddit forum dedicated to ASMR with over 55,000 subscribers and a Facebook page with almost 11,000 likes.
