STOP IT! 😮 5 THINGS TO STOP DOING IF YOU WANT TO BE FLUENT IN ENGLISH

by Gabby Wallace - Go Natural English

If this is not your first experience learning English, no doubt you have already learned a lot of things over the course of many months or years to improve your fluency. But are you learning English the right way?

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO LEARN ENGLISH?

What if we told you that learning English and improving your skills is not just about accumulating knowledge and facts? Improvement is actually about letting go! What does that mean? It means that you should be flexible and allow yourself to open up to new ideas and new ways of learning, and not feel as though you need to be stuck to one way of doing things! Learning needs to be efficient, but it should also be fun.

FIVE THINGS TO STOP DOING WHILE LEARNING ENGLISH

1 - DON’T GIVE UP! If you don’t see immediate improvement in your English, don’t give up! It takes time to change the way you learn and to realize that you are improving. It’s all about patience and about enjoying the journey of learning English. Don’t fixate on your day-to-day improvement. Yes, it’s important to learn new things and to challenge yourself, but don’t fixate on whether or not you’ve improved a certain score or grade in a very short amount of time. Instead, focus more on what you can to do experience English on a daily basis. Some days, it might feel easy and as though English is coming naturally to you – and that’s GREAT! But on the days when you’re just not feeling like yourself, or you feel extra challenged, it’s SO IMPORTANT to not give in and give up! Remember: two steps forward and one step back is still progress.

2 - DON’T STOP READING! Don’t stop reading a book just because it seems to difficult! Don’t throw it away! Try perhaps to read something else, something easier, in the meantime, and then go back to that book that seems difficult. We’re willing to wager that, after a month of two, it will seem a lot easier to read! Like any new challenge that we are faced with, at the beginning they can seem extremely daunting. With patience and perseverance, slowly but surely the challenge becomes easier to tackle. Most important: give yourself time, and be patient with yourself!

3 - DON’T COMPARE! Don’t compare yourself to others! Every learner is unique and has their own goals and experiences. You should only compare your progress to YOURSELF! Your own goals and your own improvements over time are the things you should focus on.

4- DON’T FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVE! It is SO important that you make every effort to not focus on what you cant’t do. We go where we focus, and if you’re focusing on the negative, it will distract you from your main goal. Lean into the positive things about learning English, embrace your accomplishments thus far, and use that positive energy to continue moving you forward.

5 - DON’T DO IT ALONE! Don’t try to do everything alone. Learning English is not a solo activity! You are smart and dedicated and you are SO capable of learning on your own – we have no doubts about it!! But so much about the English language, and therefore about being a fluent speaker, is about communication. And communication, by definition, means there are at least two people involved! It takes many people to learn a new language, so remember to always look for that camaraderie with other English learners like yourself, and with fluent English speakers!

5 PHRASES LIKE NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS REALLY SAY THEM

by Gabby Wallace - Go Natural English

ALL GO NATURAL ENGLISH LESSONS at https://gonaturalenglish.com
The traditional English phrases you might have learned in a classroom are probably not real-life, natural English. Natural English is what we do in everyday life, not in a textbook!

WHY SHOULD I SPEAK NATURAL ENGLISH?

Having great, natural English means that you're able to understand everyone who speaks English, and actually interact with them. Being able to communicate like a native in English is essential if you want to be able to go out into the real world and understand people speaking English.

HOW CAN I USE WHAT I LEARNED IN A TRADITIONAL CLASS IN THE REAL WORLD?

The lessons you're likely used to in a traditional class setting are not going to be very helpful if you want to speak like regular person on the street in the U.S. You have to learn to speak naturally, and not academically!

One way to take the knowledge you might already have from your previous learning experiences is to take those traditional phrases and "translate" them into real-life, natural English phrases. The traditional phrases are not incorrect, but the non-traditional way of saying these same phrases is more modern.

5 PHRASES LIKE NATIVE SPEAKERS SAY THEM

Here are 5 common phrases you likely learned in your traditional English class, and 5 real-world ways to say them:

Why? = How come?
Please repeat. = Come again? or Sorry?
Are you finished? = Are you all set? or All set?
To go to (a place) = To stop by
To meet = To meet up

A MORE NATURAL WAY OF SPEAKING

If you want to sound more natural when you're speaking American English, please try out these phrases and practice building your own sentences with them. Then, use them in real life with other English speakers!

HOW TO SPEAK MORE FLUENT ENGLISH WITH THOUGHT CHUNKING

by Gabby Wallace - Go Natural English

What is chunking and how can it improve your fluency? If you improve your listening skills, you’re automatically going to improve your fluency. Why? Because, if you can hear something, you’re more likely to be able to replicate it in your speaking.

WHAT IS CHUNKING?

If you’ve taken language lessons elswhere, your teacher probably gave you a long list of words at some point during your studies. Learning individual words is time consuming, it’s frustrating, and it’s not usually effective. Instead, learning multiple words together, groups of words, a CHUNK of words, is what we want to talk about today.

What is chunking? One good example is this common phrase: “How is it going?” (“How’s it going?” is how you’d say it like a native!) If you learn each of these words by themselves, you’ll be kind of lost and not know how to use them within a sentence. If you learn words that go together, and memorize them as a group, you’ll find it is so much easier to remember! This practice of grouping words together is called chunking.

Another example would be the answer to the question above. When someone asks “How’s it going?,” you will usually answer “Great, thanks!” The response is just two words, but it can be considered chunking because it is said so often together.

WHO SHOULD USE CHUNKING?

Beginner learners are more likely to learn individual words because they’re just starting the learning process. Intermediate learners will benefit greatly from putting the one-word-at-a-time method and use chunking instead.

Advanced learners will learn how to create their own chunks in longer sentences. These are called thought chunks.

HOW TO IDENTIFY CHUNKING, PRODUCE IT, AND HEAR IT

Listen for the chunking of words, for the pauses in between chunking, and don’t focus simply on individual words. However, being able to recognize the most important words (also known as the stressed words) in a sentence is super important! This is going to improve your listening skills, and therefore trickle over to your speaking skills, because you will learn to speak in a way that’s more intelligible, or more understandable, to other native speakers. You will speak more clearly and also sound more interesting!

Check out Gabby’s awesome video lesson above on how to properly identify thought chunking, and how to produce stress words, to improve your fluency!

"LIKE" LIKE A NATIVE - 3 WAYS ENGLISH SPEAKERS USE "LIKE"

by Gabby Wallace - Go Natural English

ALL GO NATURAL ENGLISH LESSONS at https://gonaturalenglish.com
“Like” Like a Native – 3 Ways English Speakers Use “Like”
The word “like” has many faces; it can be a noun, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition, or even a conjunction. Do you watch American films or television? Do you practice your English conversation skills with native speakers? If so, you’ve likely come across this versatile word at least once!

Like is ALWAYS followed by an object. Unlike many other languages, you cannot just say “I like” as a sentence in English. “Like” must be followed by an object, or a person or thing to which a specific action or feeling is directed. For example: “I like coffee!” However, if we use “like” to compare two things, or just as filler, that’s another story!

THE 3 WAYS TO USE “LIKE”

“Like” can be used to ask about your preference, or the qualities of a subject. “What car do you like?” asks you about your preference, for example. “What’s your car like?” asks about the qualities of a specific subject; in this case, it’s your car. Be mindful to watch for phrasing, and pay attention to what the question really asks. We know it can be confusing!
“Like” can also be used to compare, or level up your descriptions of things. For example, anyone who has watched Gabby’s videos knows she has amazingly blue eyes! One way to use “like” to compare in a situation like this would be to say: “Gabby’s eyes are blue like the ocean.” This type of comparison is also known as a simile, which is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid.
“Like” is often used as a filler, especially in North America. Word of caution: use it sparingly and use it correctly, as overuse can be considered annoying!

3 REASONS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND PHRASAL VERBS 🤔

by Gabby Wallace - Go Natural English

3 Reasons You Don’t Understand Phrasal Verbs
Learn more with The English Fluency Formula Ebook - buy & download here: https://gonaturalenglish.com/ytebookcheckout
Hey learners! It’s time to get passionate about phrasal verbs! One key part of achieving the fluency that you want is to understand phrasal verbs. These tricky pieces of English grammar can be frustrating and challenging to learn, but are sure to help you speak like a native.

WHAT IS A PHRASAL VERB?

A phrasal verb is an idiomatic phrase consisting of a main verb and another element, typically either an adverb, a preposition, or a combination of both. Typically, their meaning is not obvious from the meanings of the individual words themselves.

Here are some examples:

Verb + Adverb: “broke up”
Verb + Preposition: “spelled out”
Verb + Adverb + Preposition: “look down on”
WHAT DO PHRASAL VERBS DO?

In English, a phrasal verb is a phrase that indicates an action. Phrasal verbs can be intransitive (i.e. they have no object), or they can be transitive (i.e. they can have an object). The verb and adverb elements which make up intransitive phrasal verbs are never separated. Alternately, the situation is different with transitive verbs. If the object is a pronoun (such as it, him, her, them), then the object always comes between the verb and the adverb.

WHY ARE PHRASAL VERBS IMPORTANT?

Phrasal verbs are a huge part of being able to understand and speak English like a native speaker. Many learners have trouble with them though, so don’t give up!

WHY ARE PHRASAL VERBS SO HARD TO LEARN?

The main reason is because they’re hard! Unfortunately, hating phrasal verbs won’t make them go away (as much as we’d like them to, haha)! They are used more often than academic vocabulary in every day conversation, and are therefore super common. The first step is making the effort to understand them!
The second reason why is because, when you hear a phrasal verb, you are probably not considering the context and deducing (or guessing) what the meaning might be. For example: “I’m going to pick up my friend at the gym at 6:00 pm.” You can probably take a moment and guess, based on the rest of the information in that sentence, that I’m talking about an action regarding my friend, the gym, and a certain time of the day. To pick up in this example means to give a ride, meaning that I’m going to go pick up my friend in my car and give them a ride from the gym. Deductive reasoning here is your friend!
Third, don’t assume that you know the meaning of a phrasal verb! It is so important to double (and even triple) check the meaning of phrasal verbs, so that you are absolutely sure of their meaning. Pretending to know the meaning of a phrasal verb, and not actually knowing the correct meaning, will only do you a disservice. When in doubt, look up the meaning – or ask!! Asking takes courage but is a guaranteed way to make sure the correct meaning is engraved in your mind.
HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I LEARN PHRASAL VERBS CORRECTLY?

Don’t be embarrassed to stop and ask! You’re an English learner and most people will want to help you. If you’re shy or don’t want to slow things down, make a note to check the phrasal verb when you have time. If you convince yourself that you’re passionate about phrasal verbs, you will convince yourself that you like them! This will help you focus and learn the correct definitions and usage of phrasal verbs.

When you’re listening to conversations, make sure you pay attention and pick out (see what I did there?) the phrasal verbs! Try first to guess what they mean, put them into the context of the sentence and what you think the speaker is trying ton say. After that, double check the meaning and see if you were right (or close enough)!

Another awesome tip is to keep a journal of the phrasal verbs you learn. This way you will feel confident enough to start using them on your own. You will remember them more, you will notice them when you listen to conversations, and repeating and reviewing them continuously will help you be able to use them in your own sentences.

Driving Downtown - Broadway 4K - New York City USA

by J Utah

Driving Downtown Streets - Broadway - New York City New York USA
Starting Point: Broadway https://goo.gl/maps/kVBQ1T3BKDv
With over 1.4 billion dollars in ticket sales to 13 million attendees, the Broadway theatre district is a major tourist attraction in New York City. Broadway in Manhattan is known widely as the heart of the American theatre industry, and is used as a metonym for it. Broadway the road is the oldest north–south main road in New York City, dating to the first New Amsterdam settlement.

One famous stretch near Times Square, where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan, is the home of many Broadway theatres, housing an ever-changing array of commercial, large-scale plays, particularly musicals. This area of Manhattan is often called the Theater District or the Great White Way, a nickname originating in the headline "Found on the Great White Way" in the edition of February 3, 1902 of the New York Evening Telegram. The journalistic nickname was inspired by the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements that illuminate the area. After becoming the city's de facto red-light district in the 1960s and 1970s (as can be seen in the films Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy), since the late 1980s Times Square has emerged as a family tourist center, in effect being Disneyfied following the company's purchase and renovation of the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in 1993.

Broadway theatre, commonly known as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres with 500 or more seats located in the Theater District and Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Along with London's West End theatre, Broadway theatre is widely considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world.

The Theater District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City. According to The Broadway League, for the 2016–2017 season (which ended May 21, 2017), total attendance was 13,270,343 and Broadway shows had US$1,449,399,149 in grosses, with attendance down 0.4%, grosses up 5.5%, and playing weeks down 4.1%.

The great majority of Broadway shows are musicals. Historian Martin Shefter argues, "'Broadway musicals,' culminating in the productions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, became enormously influential forms of American popular culture" and helped make New York City the cultural capital of the nation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_theatre

Midtown Manhattan, or Midtown, represents the central lengthwise portion of the borough and island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the headquarters of the United Nations, and it contains world-renowned commercial zones such as Rockefeller Center, Broadway, and Times Square.

Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most expensive and intensely used pieces of real estate in the world, and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commands the world's highest retail rents, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017. While Lower Manhattan is the main financial center, Midtown is the country's largest commercial, entertainment, and media center. It is also a growing financial center, second in importance only to Lower Manhattan's Financial District in the United States.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_Manhattan

With a record 61 million tourists in 2016, Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world,

New York County is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2016 population of 1,643,734 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 71,999 residents per square mile (27,799/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area.

Q. What software do you use?
A. Simon's Cat is made using Adobe Flash / TV Paint / CelAction animation software.

Q. Why does it take so long to make each Simon's Cat film?
A. Animation is a slow process and Simon’s Cat films pay particular attention to observed, real life cat behaviour. Historically the films were traditionally animated frame by frame. More recently we use Celaction which has sped up the process but still requires a lot of care and attention. Each film takes approximately 6-9 weeks to make, depending on complexity, number of characters and special effects.

Q. Where can I buy Simon’s Cat merchandise?
A. You can purchase Simon's Cat products from our online shop! - https://shop.simonscat.com/

FAQs:

FAQs:

Q. Why isn’t ‘Off to the Vet’ available in full on YouTube? A. ‘Off to the Vet’ film production and crowdfunding campaign was a huge undertaking for the Simon’s Cat Team. Our hope is to produce more long form, full colour content for our fans but without having to turn to them through crowdfunding again. The film was completed in 2015 and submitted it to a selection of international film festivals over the following months. During this time, it was exclusively available to all funders that contributed via our private production blog. The feedback we have received from our funders has been overwhelming positive and we hope they are extremely proud of making the film a possibility. If you are a funder and have any questions regarding the campaign, please contact us at igg@simonscat.com

Q. What software do you use?
A. Simon's Cat is made using Adobe Flash / TV Paint animation software.

Q. Why does it take so long to make each Simon's Cat film?
A. Even though the films are made on computer software, they are still hand-animated in a traditional manner, frame to frame. It usually takes between 12 and 25 drawings to create 1 second of a Simon's Cat film.

Q. Where can I buy Simon’s Cat merchandise?
A. You can purchase Simon's Cat products from the official web shop:

ВОТ ЧТО ПРОИЗОЙДЕТ С ЛУНОЙ 31 ЯНВАРЯ

by Мастерская Настроения

TechZone ► https://goo.gl/ULy98R
