Frame-by-frame — Why the kid taking a selfie was kicked in the head by the train engineer [17 pics]
Ze Do Gasvia firehose by Joey White
Yesterday, we shared a video of a train engineer putting his boot to Jared Michael’s head when Jared tried to take a selfie as the train passed. There’s been a lot of speculation as to why the engineer did what he did. Sure, the kid even admitted he was stupid to be standing so close to the train, but two wrongs don’t make a right… Did the engineer really need to kick Jared in the head?
Frame-by-frame evidence from the video seems to indicate that the train engineer had a very good reason for kicking Jared. Redditor karolisalive pointed out an object that appears to be protruding from the train right where Michael’s head was…
If that’s not enough evidence to convince you that the engineer is a hero, here’s the complete frame-by-frame evidence. If nothing else, Jared’s transition from careless selfie to a ruined day is comical to watch…
Jared’s having a good day…
His earbuds are putting down a good beat…
The train he’s been waiting for is coming… What could go wrong?
What’s that? A train’s right behind him? You’d never know with that cool, calm, collected look…
Does Jared hear that horn blaring? Probably not… Those earbuds are cranked up a little too loud…
Is that a boot? Jared can’t see it, because Jared is still taking a selfie…
Jared still doesn’t realize there’s a boot connecting with his face…
Now he’s beginning to grasp the situation, though he still has no idea he’s being saved from the metal object protruding from the train…
And there go the earbuds…
Yep, he definitely feels the boot now…
The engineer’s ability to kick Jared’s head out of the way with a work boot while operating a moving train is actually really impressive…
At least Jared got a chance to show off that flow on top of his head…
Those are some impressive gymnastics from the engineer…
And just as quickly, the train is gone…
It’s even more impressive that the engineer was able to save Jared without completely knocking him out with the boot. That engineer is a hero!

Tibetan book of Proportions shows precise guidelines for depicting the Buddha and Bodhisattva #ArtTuesday
An eighteenth-century pattern book consisting of 36 ink drawings showing precise iconometric guidelines for depicting the Buddha and Bodhisattva figures. Written in Newari script with Tibetan numerals, the book was apparently produced in Nepal for use in Tibet. The concept of the ‘ideal image’ of the Buddha emerged during the Golden Age of Gupta rule, from the 4th to 6th century. As well as the proportions, other aspects of the depiction – such as number of teeth, colour of eyes, direction of hairs – became very important. The V&A have produced a good guide to the iconography of the Buddha, including the 32 Lakshanas or special bodily features.
Persistent Cat Demands Attention While Human Plays Guitar Shredding Solo
A gorgeous but very persistent siamese cat who seemingly wants to be the center of attention, pulls out all the stops in an attempt to distract Tony Martinez from his guitar shredding solo. Try as the cat might however, the methods just don’t seem to work. They do however, make for a very amusing video.

Kate Mulgrew Is in a Doc that Argues the Sun Revolves Around the Earth
Um, so, wait, what, who? Who what now? Did when? Why? What!? The beloved and iconic Kate Mulgrew—of Star Trek: Voyager and Orange Is the New Black—has reportedly narrated a new documentary, produced by virulent anti-Semite and Holocaust denier Robert Sungenis, promoting the idea that the sun revolves around the earth. What does it all MEAN!?!?!?

Apps with millions of Google Play downloads covertly mine cryptocurrency
Update: About 12 hours after this post went live, one of the two mentioned Android apps, Prized, was no longer available in Google Play. The other app, Songs, remained. Google representatives sent Ars an e-mail saying they won't be commenting on this report. The Google Play developer policy is here. Among other things, it requires that apps that engage in distributed computing behavior include up front disclosure that establishes user knowledge and obtains explicit consent.
Researchers said they have uncovered two apps that were downloaded from the official Google Play market more than one million times that use Android devices to mine the Litecoin and Dogecoin cryptocurrencies without explicitly informing end users.
According to a blog post published Tuesday by a researcher from antivirus provider Trend Micro, the apps are Songs, installed from one million to five million times, and Prized, which was installed from 10,000 to 50,000 times. Neither the app descriptions nor their terms of service make clear that the apps subject Android devices to the compute-intensive process of mining, Trend Micro Mobile Threats Analyst Veo Zhang wrote. As of Wednesday afternoon, the apps were still available.
