[Contest] Win a Love Live! School Idol Festival Swag Bag!

by sdshamshel

llsif2016-swagbag

I recently attended “Love Live! Sukufesu Kanshasai 2016″ in Japan, and I managed to get an extra bag of freebies. Now, I want to give it away to my readers.

All you have to do is show why your favorite Love Live! character and why they’re your favorite. Write an essay, take a photo, draw fanart, make videos, I’m leaving it up to you to express your love! They don’t even have to be a main character; moms and alpacas are valid too! And no, picking Hanayo won’t give you a higher chance either. I want to see and feel your passion, not just agree with my tastes.

Submissions can be emailed to ogimaniax at gmail dot com, and are due by July 9, 2016 11:59pm EST.

However, as thanks for being my patrons (and many of you have been with me since the beginning), I am prioritizing my Patreon supporters. If you’re one of my patrons, you will have a much higher chance of winning the prize; however, it’s not impossible to get it otherwise.

I want to emphasize that this is not an attempt to get more Patreon supporters. I merely want to thank my patrons for supporting me. If you’ve been thinking about joining the Ogiue Maniax Patreon for other reasons (perhaps you enjoy my writing), then by all means go ahead. Also, pledging more does not give you a higher chance of winning. You can be pledging at 1 cent or 1 million dollars and you would have the same chance as every other patron.

By the way, one of the items in the swag bag is an unopened card from the Love Live! Card Game. I’ve already opened mine, and it’s a Maki card. I know a lot of people are Maki fans, so if you want that one instead just tell me and I can switch them no problem.

Good luck, and may the Loveliest, Liveliest fan win!

Watch Yoshitoki Ōima Draw Characters From "A Silent Voice"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Kodansha Comics has completed their release of acclaimed manga A Silent Voice, and are doing plenty to celebrate. There's a Yoshitoki Ōima Creator Spotlight, with Yoshitoki Ōima drawing Shoya and Shoko (from Kodansha Comics' YouTube series, These Hands Make Manga).  There's a chance to win an autographed sketch. There's a digital sale with volumes 1-6 selling for $5 each. And, there's an interview with Ōima.

How did you think of the idea for A Silent Voice?
When I used to live in Gifu, I started drawing a manga to submit to a publisher in Tokyo, where I wanted to live. But my mom was against the idea of me moving to Tokyo and asked me things like, “What are you going to do about the money?” So I thought if my manga won an award, the prize money could give me a head start to live in Tokyo. And in order to make my manga, I wanted to work with whatever materials were accessible to me at the time in Gifu. I wanted to draw something I could only draw now, while I was in Gifu. So I started to incorporate things like the scenery of Gifu in the backgrounds and the subject of people with hearing disabilities. My mom was a sign-language translator, so I could ask her and people around her about the details of sign language and the reality of hearing disability.

So you made this story with the support of your family?
Yes, for sure. And I had to work it out that way. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to survive.

Why did you decide to write this story from the perspective someone who was once a bully?
First of all, I didn’t want to write this story from the perspective of the one who was getting bullied, because I didn’t think that was interesting to me or anyone else. To me, it’s easier to get into the story from the perspective of a bully, or Shota’s point of view. I’m sure more readers can relate to Shota than to Shoko. Most people can only speculate what it feels like to be a girl with a disability who gets bullied. But the truth is, you won’t be able to know how she really feels. I thought that was the more important point to convey. So I didn’t want to reveal Shoko’s inner thoughts or her true feelings.

There’s expressions in this manga that are unique, like the “X” on people’s faces from Shoya’s point of view, and words that are half cut off from Shoko’s point of view.
Those were purely just ideas that I had. At first, I had a vision of a classroom scene with all the classmates’ faces crossed out with X’s. Because I thought of this scene, I dug deeper into developing Shota and other characters’ personality. The scene from Shoko’s point of view, when the words in the speech bubble get cut off, the whole point is to show the world she lives in. I don’t know if this was the right way to express it. Because at the end of the day, I don’t really know what it’s like or how it feels to be in her world. But I want to know. That’s what made me struggle the most.

The Warhammer 40k License - A Total Change of Strategy - Extra Credits

by Extra Credits

Games Workshop has done a complete about face on its approach to video game licensing. They used to focus on one key partner (SSI Mindscape or THQ) producing high quality, big budget games. But recently, they started licensing multiple video game developers, many with no proven record of success. Why the sudden change? (---More below)

Games Workshop (of Warhammer fame) offers a great case study in taking physical IP and transferring it to the digital world. Back in the 90s when tabletop games were at their peak, GW licensed a company called SSI Mindscape to produce games using the Warhammer IP. That company collapsed, and the IP then moved to a bigger game developer: THQ. This new partner produced big budget games meant to stand on their own as beacons of quality. If players liked the games enough to try tabletop, great, but primarily the video games were meant to stand on their own. Then THQ collapsed. In the wake of that change, GW has adopted an entirely different strategy: rather than focus on one partner, they now hand minor licenses out to almost any developer who asks, regardless of their track record or ability to produce quality games. There are many factors which could have motivated this change. GW has been struggling financially with declining stocks and management shake-ups, and putting out a slew of video games at no cost to themselves has the potential to bring in welcome short-term revenue. These video game tie-ins also function as advertisements for GW's core business, again at no cost to them. The odds of a satisfied tabletop player quitting because of an unsatisfying video game seem pretty low. It also gives GW a chance to vet developers, determining from actual product performance if there might be a dev they want to entrust with a larger license for big projects. Finally, their shotgun approach to video game licensing lets them put Warhammer games on all platforms, in a wide variety of genres, giving them a numerically higher probability of stumbling onto a hit. Since other toy or game companies (Hasbro, LEGO, DC) are now also starting to move into the video game market, GW provides an interesting test case. Will they follow its lead? Or will they consider the long-term value of their brand name too important to risk?

It'll be up for grabs for free, and there'll be a special booth at the show hosted by the adorable Kero-chan himself.

As part of the special 20th anniversary revival of the Card Captor Sakura franchise, the newspaper will have additional information about the projects floating around right now following the series. Nakayoshi just launched a sequel to the original manga on June 3, and in the same issue a brand new revival of the anime was announced. Exciting news!
