The goods will be up for pre-order starting September 13, and will go on sale for a limited one-year run in November.

Comiket 96 Welcomes a Record-Breaking 730,000 Attendees

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Tokyo's Comic Market is the biggest fan event in the world, with half a million attendees or more populating Tokyo Big Sight at each event. This year, though, they surpassed even those impressive numbers.

Comiket made two major changes to its standard style this year, in line with losing a portion of their space to Summer Olympics construction. On the one hand, they stretched the event out to four days rather than the standard three, with today marking the final day of Comiket 96. On the other, entry this year required a paid wristband. A full weekend cost 2,000 yen, or 2,500 yen with a special booklet; single-day wristbands could also be purchased for 500 yen.

Paid entry was instated both to offsets costs for an extra day of operation and to lighten attendance within the decreased available space. It didn't seem to stop attendees, though.

As of Sunday, attendance was on par with last year's summer Comiket at 530,000 people. But today brought in 200,000 more, pushing attendance to 730,000—far surpassing the previous record of 590,000 at 2013's Comiket 84.

Comiket 97 and 98 will both run for four days and require purchase of a wristband for entry, and once again place corporate booths in Aomi Exhibition Hall due to the loss of the East Hall to Olympics construction. The Olympics themselves mean next summer's Comiket 98 will take place during Golden Week.

Neon Lights Cast Dark Shadows in Kabukicho Sherlock TV Anime Trailer

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Dr. John Watson examines a clue while performing an autopsy in the Kabukicho Sherlock TV anime.

There's murder and mayhem hiding just beneath the glitzy surface of Kabukicho in a new trailer for Kabukicho Sherlock, an upcoming original TV anime that re-imagines the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective stories as modern day sleuths prowling the shadows of Tokyo's "Sleepless Town".

In addition to highlighting the cast and the setting, the new trailer (below) also samples the ending theme for the show, entitled "Hyakuoku Kounen" ("Ten Billion Light Years"), which is performed by Lozareena.

Set in modern day Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, Kabukicho Sherlock follows the comedic, mysterious, and dramatic adventures of a ragtag band of detectives as they live together in a tenement above Mrs. Hudson's bar in the red light district and attempt to solve an unusual string of killings known as the "Jack the Ripper Murders".

Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, and other misfit amateur detectives gather beneath the neon splendor in the Kabukicho Sherlock TV anime.

Kabukicho Sherlock is directed by Ai Yoshimura and features animation production by Production I.G. The series will broadcast in Japan on Mainichi Broadcasting System, Tokyo Broadcasting System, and BS-TBS as part of the "Animeism" programming block beginning in October of 2019.

Song of Saya Remastered Will Let You See the World with New Eyes

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Get ready for another dose of eldritch romance—this time, the definitive edition.

JAST USA announced at Anime Expo this past weekend that they're putting together a remastered version of Song of Saya, the eldritch horror romance eroge Nitroplus. The Lovecraftian visual novel is getting pieced back together from the ground up, it seems, on a new engine with new artwork.

Written by Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Song of Saya casts the player as medical student Fuminori Sakisaka, whose life is coming undone after an accident leaves him with severe agnosia. Now, everything in the world appears to be covered in gore, and all other humans are terrifying monsters. Only a stranger named Saya looks at all human to him anymore, leading the pair down a romantic road that could lead to the end of themselves or the end of everything.

JAST USA has said the new release will be available on Steam for PC later this month. At present, the release appears to be Western-only, with no announcements yet for a Japanese release.

Gundam/Hello Kitty Feud Takes It to the Turntables for DJ Night

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

It looks like space just wasn't big enough for the both of them... so Gundam and Hello Kitty are taking it to the stage for a DJ battle like no other!

Tokyo Mystery Circus, SCRAP's event space devoted to puzzles and escape rooms, will be hosting the night of music to celebrate events currently being hosted themed to both franchises. "Gundam Launch Strategy" and "Hello Kitty's Riddle-Solving Museum" will be held simultaneously at the venue to celebrate the two-in-one anniversary project.

Fans can look forward to a night of music and dancing, hosted by a DJ repping each title. For the Kitty side is, of course, DJ Hello Kitty, who has been dropping EDM beats around the world as an officially licensed Sanrio character since 2010:

And on Team Gundam is DJ Caesar: a formative presence in the anison DJ scene, and most recently the curator of the tunes for the Mobile Suit Gundam 40th Anniversary BEST ANIME MIX:

Each DJ will get their own half-hour set, followed by a dual session to close out the night.

I Want to Connect, but I'm Reviewing the Sarazanmai Cafe in Asakusa

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Good morning! Azuma Sara, here, dish! I’m on a very important mission today! I’ve got some great news for all of you, dish. Haven’t you heard? A new cafe opened up at the Tokyo Skytree, and it’s based on my show Sarazanmai, dish! What’s that? Sarazanmai is already over, dish? As sad as it is to say, my show did end recently. Luckily for us, the cafe is still open for a few more days, dish! That's right, everyone who enjoyed Sarazanmai can experience the cafe, and everyone who has yet to catch up to the finale still has time to join in on the fun! I can’t make my appearance in public just yet after the fiasco at the meet and greet, so I’ve sent a special kappaspondant out into the field to report on the cafe. Let’s all wish my friend Danni "Good sarakku!" on her report, dish!

Good sarakku!

Thank you, Sara! It’s always a pleasure to make your aplatence. I have a lot of good memories of Asakusa from my first trip to Japan, and have been a diehard fan of Kunihiko Ikuhara’s anime for a long time now, so Sarazanmai has been an utter delight for me to watch this past season. I was lucky enough to be staying near Asakusa when the finale aired and took the opportunity to see some of the sights from the show, including the massive Skytree tower standing just a short walk from some of the show’s most iconic locations. One of the cafes inside had been retrofitted into a Sarazanmai cafe, and at Sara’s behest, I dropped in for a report!

Cafe2

The location turned out to be rather small. Most of the seating was outside, and there were unfortunately few decorations and no memorabilia to appreciate. On the upside, there was no line, so I was able to just walk in and order as soon as I decided what I wanted from the menu. Speaking of which, the menu looked as humorous as it did tasty. On top of dishes like Enta’s Golden Pancakes and a chocolate banana designed to look like a cucumber, there was an entire selection of soft drinks that all had the word “butt” in the title and either gelatin or tapioca shirikodama pellets inside (I’ll never quite look at bubble tea the same way again).

Cafe3

I eventually settled on an order of Enta’s Golden Pancakes with Kazuki’s Cranberry-flavored butt juice to drink. Each order came with one random special coaster, and I was lucky enough to end up with the “never did anything wrong” duo of Enta and Toi. My food came out rather quickly, and I took a seat and went to work. Both items looked just as delicious in person as they did on the menu -- a true rarity in the food industry.

Cafe4

Enta’s Golden Pancakes were very light, fluffy, and delicious on their own, and all the added flavors complimented them well. Where I’m from we only put butter and syrup on pancakes, but as it turns out, vanilla ice cream makes a pretty good pancake topping! Placed all around the pancakes was an assortment of peaches and toasted marshmallows, which were utterly delicious. Unsurprisingly, they were fantastic pancakes. If I had to make one criticism, I wasn’t a fan of the peaches. I don’t know whether it was intentional or not, but they were practically frozen, which I thought robbed them of some of their flavor. The tiny edible Enta on top was cute, though, even if eating him felt pretty weird.

Cafe5

Kazuki’s cranberry butt juice was pretty dang delicious as well. It tasted like regular cranberry juice, but thankfully all those extra garnishes weren’t just there to look pretty. In addition to the tiny pieces of fruit that had been placed in the drink, it was filled with tiny “shirikodamas” that were each like tiny concentrated pellets of sweet, tangy flavor. As soon as I’d finished draining my glass I was digging around through the ice looking for any leftover pellets. And of course, there was a tiny edible Kazuki placed on top. The Golden Duo were soon reunited.

Cafe6

After finishing my meal, I went to check out the special Sarazanmai goods being sold next door. While not particularly wide, the selection was rather standard for anime goods. An assortment of keychains, acrylics, clear folders, cups, and hand towels were all being sold. The most unique items I found for sale there were the tiny plates being sold, my favorite of which was easily the one brandishing the character for “butt” on its face. I may or may not have walked out of the store that day having bought a butt dish, dish.

Cafe7

All in all, I was rather satisfied with my trip to the Sarazanmai cafe. While it’s true that most of the anime-themed cafes I’ve been to before had more in the way of decorations for fans to immerse themselves in, the food was above and beyond what I’m used to receiving at themed cafes. ¥1500 for the entire meal seems like a pretty reasonable price too, all things considered. The cafe is only open through July 12, so if you enjoyed Sarazanmai this past season and find yourself in the Asakusa area before then, drop in for a bite! You’re sure to have an otterly good time.

Just as they become inseparable, Minato loses his life in an accident at sea. Hinako is so distraught that she can no longer even look at the ocean, but one day she sings a song that reminds her of their time together, and Minato appears in the water. From then on, she can summon him in any watery surface as soon as she sings their song, but can the two really remain together forever? And what is the real reason for Minato’s sudden reappearance?

Japan Box Office: Ride Your Wave Debuts at 9th with Disappointing 80 Million Yen

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Internationally acclaimed director Masaaki Yuasa (Lu over the Wall, Devilman Crybaby)'s highly-anticipated new feature film Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara/Ride Your Wave was released in 299 theaters across Japan on June 21. Despite massive publicity efforts, it debuted in ninth place with a poor 80 million yen. It also ranked only fourth in Pia's first day satisfaction ranking

His previous feature film Yoaketsugeru Lu no Uta/Lu over the Wall won the Cristal for Best Feature film award at Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2017, which gave him international fame as an animation director. However, the honor seemingly didn't have much influence on Japanese audiences.

Already out of the top 10 for a while, but the 23rd Detective Conan feature film Konjyou no Fist/The Fist of Blue Sapphire has finally crossed the nine billion yen mark in its domestic market. It still needs 140 million yen more to become the top-grossing film in the Conan anime franchise by surpassing the current record of 9.18 billion yen marked by the 22nd film Zero the Enforcer in 2018.

As a final push, the film plans to start its 4DX attraction screenings on August 23, 2019, so there is still a chance to break the record during this summer.
