How To Master Minimalist Dressing, The Everlane Way
To tackle that, we're looking to one S.F. brand that has tonal essentials down to a science: Everlane. The brand's streamlined aesthetic, retail transparency, and striking pieces are turning heads in both the tech and fashion space. So, we ventured to its Mission HQ to get the scoop on how its employees infuse this ethos into their own lives (and, of course, their closets). Take a tour of the ridiculously cool lofty office and meet six folks who are, without a doubt, masters of minimalism.
Name: Alyssa Bergerson
Position: Affiliate marketing and PR coordinator
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"Stick with a neutral palette and be more playful with certain aspects... My favorite way to achieve this look is to pair ladylike textures and silhouettes with a leather jacket. The black-and-white combo really helps with the contrast, too."
Everlane top, shoes; Wilfred skirt; Coordinates Collection bracelet.
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane.
"I run our affiliate marketing and influencer program here at Everlane. Planning outreach around product launches, finding new channels to acquire customers, and working with our PR team. A lot of my day to day is online, but I love bringing that experience offline with press and consumer events."
What's your favorite Everlane piece?
"My Petra bag. No brainer. I have the navy market [style] and it goes everywhere with me."
How would you describe the company culture?
"Collaborative, creative, and community-driven."
What about your personal style?
"Boy meets girl. I like to combine feminine pieces, like skirts and dresses, with tomboyish ones like my leather jacket or sneakers."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"Definitely our L.A. factory tour. You never really understand how something is made until you see the whole process — from the mill to the garment-dye facility. It was also awesome to wear a GoPro on my head."
What is it about Everlane that makes it such a game changer in fashion and tech?
"We started online only and e-commerce will always remain the core of our business. That alone has put us at the forefront of innovation in fashion and tech. Now, we think about ways to go beyond that to make the shopping experience easier — same-day delivery, home try-on, personalization."
What's been your favorite project so far?
"I started building our online influencer strategy in January and it has been incredible to see it grow. It's a work in progress, and I am excited to expand our online presence through different channels."
Tell us more about the piece you styled.
"The short sleeve luxe wool is the perfect piece to layer in S.F. It's light enough to be worn as a tee, but also doubles as a sweater. I wanted to pair it with a heavier midi-skirt for a more elevated look. Of course, my favorite part of the outfit is our loafer launching October 1. They add a menswear vibe and tie the outfit together in a clean way."
Name: Kiersten Marian
Position: Creative project management
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"You don't have to worry about matching colors when you wear all black. It makes it easier to experiment with different silhouettes and textures."
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane.
"I work with a team of eight super-talented creatives. I make sure any creative collateral for our launches or events is executed from start to finish. I'm the token left brain of team."
Everlane top, T by Alexander Wang pants, rag & bone shoes.
What's your favorite part about working here?
"Everyone I work with is really smart and original. They tell me novel things and strange stories."
How would you describe the company culture?
"Very community-based. We all have breakfast together on Mondays, do yoga together on Tuesdays, and lose — so, so miserably — at kickball on Thursdays."
Describe your personal style.
"Our copywriter Laura once dubbed my outfits as 'elevated loungewear.' I'll take it."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"At our last holiday party, I had a dance off with our head of social, Red, to Salt-N-Pepa's 'Push It.' I think we might've both lost. I actually try to forget that moment — but a lot of people remind me about it. "
What is it about Everlane that makes it such a game changer in fashion and tech?
"I think being in San Francisco — amidst the tech industry — pushes us to keep being innovative, and being only online allows [us] to be agile about those innovations. Plus, all of our products are thoughtfully designed and well made, and we're transparent about that entire process. "
What's been your favorite project to work on so far?
"Currently working on redesigning our packaging! More gray to come!"
Name: Red Gaskell
Position: Head of social
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"Look your best in the simplest way possible. Don't get caught up and dwell on details that don't matter without getting the basics, like fit, right first."
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane.
"Our founder, Michael, pulled me aside about a year ago and said, 'Hey Red, everything that uses a hashtag is yours.'"
Everlane shirt, T-shirt, jacket; APC pants; thrifted shoes.
What's your favorite Everlane piece?
"The pocket tee."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"Last year, we created a Secret Garden speakeasy in the back of a tattoo shop in NYC. That is where I got my first tattoo. There isn't much time to spare during events, so I squeezed a four-and-a-half hour session into a workday. While my right arm was under the needle, I used my left to write emails and draft posts."
What's been your favorite project to work on so far?
"The #KnowYourFactories tour in L.A. We had an incredible group of people join us for a tour of our mill, tee factory, and garmentdyeing facility."
How would you describe the company culture?
"Electric."
Describe your personal style.
"A constant work in progress."
Name: Hawa Arsala
Position: Studio assistant
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"Adding a statement piece to an outfit, whether it's a pattern, pop of color, or texture, is a great way to accentuate clean lines while adding a bit of your own personality. "
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane?
"I assist our creative project manager, Kiersten, with content management on the back end of our website. I also work closely with the photo and video leads to prepare for shoots, help on set, and generally bounce ideas around with the creative team. It's a great mix of technical and creative."
Everlane top, Cotton Candy jacket, Levi's jeans, earrings from India, Partners shoes.
How would you describe the company culture?
"The culture here is quite focused and driven, but there is also a great balance in building community. I feel like we all bring such a range of experiences and willingness to push boundaries."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"I'm fairly new to the team, but my first week, the company gathered for a production presentation led by our designer, Petra. Hearing her talk about each new product was super inspiring!"
Describe your personal style?
"I have a pretty diverse personal style that hinges on a marriage of uncanniness and minimalism — whether it's mixing menswear with chunky, Middle Eastern jewelry gathered from travels, or layering oversized tunics and chunky knits with a pencil skirt. I love it when quality investment pieces mingle with thrift finds, and contemporary silhouettes meet my personal heritage. I'm usually always wearing something I can tell a story about."
Name: Robert Cantwell
Position: Head of operations
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"I mainly wear garments with solid, muted colors, so texture variation is really important in order to keep the outfit interesting."
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane?
"I am responsible for Everlane's financials, order fulfillment, and customer matters."
What's your favorite part about working here?
"Making Everlane as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside."
What's been your favorite project to work on so far?
"Easy — collaborations with Refinery29."
How would you describe the company culture?
"Doing whatever it takes to build a better company."
Describe your personal style.
"High quality materials trimmed to a slim fit; nothing flashy, except maybe a pair of expensive sneakers."
Tell us more about the piece you styled.
"This heavy shirt is about 50% thicker than a typical oxford button-down. San Francisco is exactly 5 degrees colder than you always want it to be, so the extra thickness is needed."
Name: Ling Luke
Position: Events and PR manager
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"Minimalist dressing is all about pared-down clothes in luxe fabrics. I like to pair our luxe wool sweater with a few oversized pieces like this long black coat, boyfriend jeans, and a men's leather belt."
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane?
"I'm on the brand marketing team — conceptualizing and executing all offline branding experiences and overseeing PR initiatives."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"A few months ago, the company took an impromptu trip to Lake Tahoe. It was 60 degrees and sunny — we were skiing in t-shirts."
Everlane sweater, belt; rag & bone jeans; BLK DNM coat; Miu Miu flats; Michelle Lopez ring.
Tell us more about the piece you styled.
"I like the fact that this luxe wool sweater looks like a T-shirt at first glance. It's made from an uber luxurious material, but the cut makes the piece more youthful."
Describe your personal style.
"Definitely tomboy. The oversized quality of men's clothing contrasts with my petite frame."
Name: Frankie Brannon
Position: User acquisition lead
What's your one tip for minimalist dressing?
"Get clothes that fit well; it makes all the difference."
Tell us more about the piece you styled.
"I've been collecting rare Nikes since childhood. The Nike Airmax 180 Safari is chic enough to pull off the 'grown-up' look, they're not too over-the-top, and a nice pop. The Everlane hoodie has a casual but neat fit. You can throw it over a muted crew-neck tee and roll up the sleeves to dress it up a bit more."
Jack and Jones T-shirt, Everlane hoodie, Levi's jeans, Nike shoes.
Tell us more about what you do at Everlane?
"I am in charge of bringing in new Everlane customers via paid online advertising."
What's your most memorable moment working here?
"Two weeks into the job, I went to the company retreat to Palm Springs. It was so hot, you couldn't walk on the cement without burning your feet."
What's been your favorite project to work on so far?
"I'm completely revamping our Facebook advertising strategy. "
What's your favorite part about working here?
"Autonomy, freedom to try new things, no bureaucracy, and being around smart, driven people."

The awning is up now at GG's, the new restaurant taking over the Goat Town space at 511 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.
Goat Town owner Nick Morgenstern closed the bistro in early July after four years. His new chef, Bobby Hellen, "will forage the back garden for ingredients, including anise hyssop for the devout Mets fan’s 1986 Pizza, topped with spicy soppressata and fennel agrodolce," according to New York magazine.
And here's an interior shot...

As for GG's, New York noted — "its name a tribute to a neighborhood local." This former local?

Photo: Courtesy of The Dodo. This baby squirrel is on the mend after she tumbled 75 feet from her nest onto the sidewalk below. Veterinarians at the City Wildlife clinic in Washington D.C. report that the furry youngster was left with a few injures from the fall, but is expected to make a speedy recovery.“She suffered a bloody nose, a broken tooth, and a broken ankle. Luckily, just like children, this squirrel is young enough that her ankle should heal very quickly.”
Chief veterinarian Kelley McDonald, who fashioned a tiny cast for the adorable little patient, says that as windy weather approaches lots of baby squirrels arrive to her clinic with similar injuries having been knocked from their nests.
“Most of them are able to be returned to the wild,” McDonald tells The Dodo. “Broken bones usually heal well. They do fine.”

The New Web Series Every Broke Girl Can Relate To
The Leftovers has been renewed for a second season
For anyone worried that The Leftovers was going to, um, suddenly depart from HBO without a trace at the end of its debut season, here's some good news: HBO has announced the series is in production for another season.
In an announcement earlier today, Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming, said the network was "thrilled" to renew the show that was created by "the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta." As Vulture noted, the series' audience has held strong at between 1.6 and 1.8 million viewers on the initial day of broadcast. (It likely adds many more over DVR playback, reruns, and HBO Go streams.)
The premise of The Leftovers is that three years ago, 2 percent of the world's population simply vanished without explanation. The series follows those who have been left behind — the leftovers — in the small town of Mapleton, NY, as they try to deal with their loss and rebuild their lives.
Here are our reviews of the first seven episodes of this season. The final three episodes beginning airing this Sunday at 10pm on HBO, leading up to the season finale on Sept. 7.

Susan, who grew up in the neighborhood, gave us permission to post these photos. (Unfortunately, we do not have exact dates and locations for all these.)

I also unearthed all sorts of wonders I’ve hung onto for far too long to get rid of now, such as my most prized possession of the year 1982, a hairband from the original Annie movie, my lifeguard certification card from 1996 and the dorky Ann Taylor shirt I was wearing when I met my husband in 2003, something you’ll no doubt see Stacy London clucking her tongue over one day when I finally land my own What Not To Wear episode (a girl can dream, right?).

Have you heard the rooftop parties at Ben Shaoul's Bloom 62?

We have! A few Sundays ago from atop the former nonprofit nursing home on Avenue B and East Fifth Street that Ben Shaoul bought and converted into high-end rentals. And we've heard grumbling from residents on East Fifth Street. (The Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation wasn't really known for rooftop parties.)
Meanwhile, an Avenue B resident shared this.
Has anyone else complained about Bloom 62? I was walking on the street Saturday night and there was music so loud on the roof ... I contacted 311 and the police allegedly “resolved” the issue, but it was still very noisy through the night. I can’t believe the neighbors around the building can tolerate it.
We actually didn’t eat at Lavagna that night because the music was so loud by the restaurant.
It was clear there was a pro DJ with very serious sound system on the roof.
