KAIBASHIRA-ZU [貝柱ズ] - Fuck in the Night
(from V/A - “Super Gimmick Special ‘82” LP, 1982, Musical Tube)

Raunchy and rambunctious punky madness from incredibly oddly named all-girl band KAIBASHIRA-ZU (貝柱ズ = Adductor Muscles???). Taken from an otherwise pretty lame compilation called "Super Gimmick Special ‘82" whose saving grace, apart from two rippers by these crazy gals, are some wonderfully sleazy AOR by groups N・E・W・S and LAST CAST (in particular the latter one delivers some top grade city cheese).

But back to "Fuck in the Night" - it’s a blast of straight ahead, no-nonsense and just plain, stupid fun punky madness. You can really hear how fun the band had recording this - seemingly giddy to get this relatively obscenity-filled track down on wax. Take especial notice of the section after the quiet part (circa 2:12) when the band members take turn in shouting out "このやろう" (= “bastard”, “you shit” or something like that) - charmingly rude!

So yeah, KAIBASHIRA-ZU are bascially like SHONEN KNIFE’s raunchier out-of-control little sisters. As far as I know they only released this track plus another one ("Virgin Dream", which is in more of a new wave vein, but still really good) also featured on the above mentioned "Super Gimmick Special ‘82" compilation - a pretty mediocre record overall, but well worth grabbing for those two tracks alone (at least that’s what I try to tell myself).

Tight Rope - Hard Line/Rock’n Roll(from the “Tight...

Tight Rope - Hard Line/Rock’n Roll
(from the “Tight Rope” single-sided 7” flexi, 1986, Infouc Record)

Mysterious single-sided flexi disc released in 1986. It seems that all information about this record is what is to be found on it’s very spartan sleeve: two tracks by a band called TIGHT ROPE, consisting of at least two persons (both previously unknown to me; Akihiro Kanasuqi and Toshinori Hiqano …though I’m not 100% sure about the spelling - the typeface used makes it hard to see, ie. the q:s could be g:s and vice versa). It was released on a label called Infouc Record, which is probably the bands own imprint, and comes with the recommendation to "Play loud 33 rpm". That’s about it …so on to the music!

The first track ("Hard Line") starts off with some skewed, slightly prog-ish dual guitars kinda meandering about without any clear direction. After a while, some wah-guitar and very distorted bass slowly gets introduced and suddenly we’re thrown into an instrumental three piece jam. Centered around a hard, harsh and repetitive riff, it goes on for a little while until it too suddenly stops and makes way for the next track.

Being more of a “real” song than it’s predecessor, "Rock’n Roll" begins with a swoosh of ominous synthesizer before launching into a riff akin to "Hard Line", but relatively more rhythmically complex and sounding much more bleaker - quite certainly due to the freaked out and distressed-sounding vocals, giving the whole track a sort of claustrophobic atmosphere.

Not really sure how to place this confounding flexi with it’s hard rock riffage combined with post-punk feel and various avant garde-y quirks. I’d be hard pressed to speculate about what TIGHT ROPE was really aiming for with this release …though what I can say is that I do enjoy this odd little sonosheet and that I hope you will too. Any information about this band at all is of course welcome btw!

Jonah Hill Got His Big Break Making Prank Calls For Dustin Hoffman

by Aly Weisman
Iris Rebelo

aprendam

Jonah Hill Jake Hoffman

Crossroads private school in Santa Monica, Ca., has a slew of celebrity alumni, from Kate Hudson to Michael Bay.

And it was there that a young Jonah Hill befriended actor Dustin Hoffman's son, Jake Hoffman.

Hill, now 30, told The Jewish Journal that the Hoffman family came to be hugely influential in his life — especially his career.

In fact, it was performing prank phone calls for Dustin Hoffman that ultimately led to Hill becoming an actor.

“I used to make crank phone calls for him,” Hill said. Hoffman had friends he’d have Hill call, as well as assorted strangers; the goal was to get the person to buy into the conversation for as long as possible. “I had this bit where I’d phone people, pretend to be a celebrity’s assistant and ask for outlandish things,” Hill said. In one call to a seedy hotel during Oscar season, he pretended to be Tobey Maguire’s assistant and got the owner to agree to install a tank for a pet seal. “I’ve always said crank calls are one of the best improv exercises you can do, because you’re never put on the spot that heavily in a scene,” Hill said. “It’s the most jagged, maneuverable situation possible because you’re dealing with a real person.”

Apparently, Hoffman thought so, too, because he helped get Hill a bit part in his 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees” — the break that eventually led to Apatow’s “40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Hill has since gone on to star in more serious films such as "Cyrus" and "Moneyball" alongside Brad Pitt, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

But the Hoffman/Hill storyline came full circle in "Wolf of Wall Street," in which Hill got to share the screen in a few scenes with his longtime pal Jake, who played Steve Madden in the Scorsese flick.

Sartorial Science: Christopher Kane Resort 2014

Iris Rebelo

nao sei que pensar

If "fashion scientist" was a career path, it's one that Christopher Kane likely would have pursued. But it's not (yet), so the designer instead experiments with each collection, pushing the boundaries of clothing by using fabric in a new way, introducing an unexpected detail on a signature shape, and taking inspiration from previously successful trials. For his resort collection, Kane was influenced by ideas both old and new—oversized crystal buttons from his Fall/Winter 2010 resurface on a shirtdress, and the body-conscious shapes from his first collection are re-vamped with bright strips of color that look like a Mondrian painting. A stunning wire frame motif inspired by the base for 3-D computer graphics brings new dimension to sweaters and skirts. Although the delicate floral lace seems more Charlotte's Web than The Fifth Element, the glowstick pattern and wire bust that appear on jersey dresses and sweatshirts keep the weird science vibe alive. If Christopher Kane's hypothesis was that vintage-inspired styles would work well alongside futuristric prints, this collection proves it to be true.

Goodbye, Mulled Wine! Holiday Cocktails the British Way

Ryan Chetiyawardana is no ordinary mixologist: cocktail making to him is as much a science as it is an art. Responsible for some of the UK's best bars over the past decade, Ryan recently opened up White Lyan, a concept bar in Hoxton where every cocktail is made using non-perishable ingredients. That means no limes, no lemons, and no ice. How, you may ask? Refrigerators chill liquids to exact temperatures, while vinegars and cordials add more consistent tartness than traditional fruits. White Lyan's liquors and its water, meanwhile, often don't come out of taps or branded bottles but are crafted on site.

You're probably thinking all of this sounds delicious, if impossible to recreate at home. But even if you're not whipping up your own bathtub gin, you can still make a great holiday cocktail à la White Lyan. In the spirit of all things festive, I met Ryan last week to learn the secrets behind three of his top wintry drinks that will have you saying goodbye to mulled wine. Peace on earth, good will to men, and happy cocktail making!

"Churchill Royale

This cocktail was inspired by Winston Churchill's storied love affair with sparkling wine (pints of Champagne anyone?) and his notable efforts at championing all things British. Our homage uses White Lyan's gin (homemade in England), a rhubarb cordial (a British staple), hot water, and English sparkling wine. It has a lovely herbal play, but also a fruitiness and a brioche finish.

At home:
Mix gin and rhubarb in a flute, add hot water, then top with sparkling wine and finish with a grapefruit twist.

Recipe:
25ml London dry gin (Beefeater works great)
15ml rhubarb cordial
50ml hot water
50ml English sparkling wine (we recommend Nyetimber)

"Cusk

A twist on the traditional Scandinavian "Karsk"––a hot drink involving coffee and aquavit––the Cusk is the perfect cocktail to nuzzle up with after coming in from the cold. In Scandinavia, making a Karsk starts with placing a penny in a cup before filling it with black coffee. You stop when the copper coin disappears, and then fill with aquavit until you can see it once again. White Lyan's Cusk is a little more sophisticated: we take a ginger distillate and mix with diluted aquavit that we've passed through an instant boiler. We then sweeten it a touch with a brown butter and cream syrup.

At home:
Put a good glug of aquavit in a cup with a coin of peeled ginger. Add a teaspoon of brown sugar and top with boiling water. Stir until all has dissolved then add a small pad of salted butter.

Recipe:
30ml aquavit
1 coin-sized piece of fresh ginger
1 heaped teaspoon brown sugar
Boiling water
A small pad of salted butter

Slavoj Žižek's perverted guide to ideology

Everyone's favourite Lacanian tells us why the London riots were only the beginning

Once more, in The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology,  filmmaker Sophie Fiennes teams up with “the world’s hippest philosopher” Slavoj Žižek, in the highly-anticipated sequel to The Pervert’s Guide of Cinema (2006). From replicate studio sets of popular films like The Sound of Music, Taxi Driver, Full Metal Jacket, Vertigo, and Titanic, Žižek interprets a compelling cinematic journey into the heart of ideology – the inherent fantasies that shape our beliefs and practices. If anything, we quickly learn that we are responsible for our own

Four Tet “Beautiful Rewind”

by conceptoradio
Iris Rebelo

pedro carvalho. dancinhas.

ft_text025lp_beautifulrewind_550px
