How to Pick the Best Sparkling Water

Easy, always go for the one with the tarantula in it.

From club soda to La Croix, the wide variety of fizzy water is overwhelming. It’s tempting to wave it all away as “just water,” but these carbonated concoctions drastically differ in taste and mouthfeel. Fizzy water is the only thing keeping me from embalming myself with Diet Coke, and I have opinions on the subject.

Mmmm

Spaghetti squash sometimes gets a bad rap. When people tout it as a pasta replacement, it sets unrealistic expectations. So let's get one thing straight: Spaghetti squash does not have the same taste or texture as pasta.

It does, however, give you an extra serving of veggies and makes a great base for all sorts of delicious toppings — like this Mediterranean-inspired combo of chickpea salad, fresh pesto, and crumbled feta cheese.

Rupture in airport fuel line delays AirAsia X flights

by Bernama

AirAsia XKUALA LUMPUR: Flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 will be delayed until tomorrow due to a ruptured airport fuel line, AirAsia X said today.

In a statement, the low-cost airline said the rupture has prevented aircraft from refuelling at all P bay gates at the airport.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience. The incident occurred during maintenance work by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

“A total of 4,564 passengers on 14 AirAsia X flights departing between 6.00pm today and 1.00am tomorrow will be affected,” it said.

Passengers are to contact the airline for further information and assistance through its live chat at www.airasia.com or eform.airasia.com.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is currently seeking advice from the operator of the fuelling aviation system, KAFS Sdn Bhd, on the rectification works of a ruptured fuel line at klia2.

“We will provide further updates as to when the situation can be resolved,” the airport operator said in a statement today.

MAHB said it had immediately assessed the situation and called for an emergency briefing with all relevant stakeholders, including the airlines to inform them on the mitigation plans.

“The plans include refuelling via bowsers and relocation of gates for some of the flights.

“Passengers may experience some inconvenience resulting from flights delays, as well as some bus services activation, which is needed to ferry passengers to aircraft parked at remote bays.

“Only passengers travelling on AirAsia X are affected,” it said.

MAHB said an incident which happened at klia2 during the scheduled pavement maintenance work at Gate P10 had affected the fuel pipeline at several aircraft parking bays at Pier P.

It said this maintenance work is part of the ongoing maintenance programme whereby grouting injections at 65 locations have been performed since August 2015.

“The contractor responsible for the maintenance work has accidentally ruptured the fuel pipeline while performing the grouting injection at Gate P10 earlier today.

“This has caused the hydrant refuelling at the affected wide body bays to be unserviceable,” it said.

5 More Ways to Use Miso Paste — The Asian Soup Pot

by Kelli Foster

Miso is the fermented soybean paste we rely on for flavoring miso soup, whisking into umami-packed vinaigrettes and marinades, and tossing with roasted vegetables for a more flavorful side dish — but that's not all this pantry staple can do. Here are five more ways to put miso paste to work in everyday dishes from breakfast through dessert.

Airbus Will Deliver Its 10,000th Aircraft Next Week

by Zach Honig
Jim Paull

Wow, just seems like yesterday that #1 rolled out.

Next week is going to be very special for Airbus, Singapore Airlines and The Points Guy. TPG and I will be traveling to Toulouse, France to join Singapore for the handoff of an especially notable A350 — Airbus has selected this plane for its 10,000th aircraft delivery, taking place at TLS next Friday. We’ll be joining the plane on its delivery flight to Changi Airport, and, a week or so later, it’ll head to San Francisco for SQ’s inaugural nonstop flight to the US.

Obviously, a 10,000th aircraft delivery is a tremendous milestone for Airbus, which has been churning out airliners since the 70s. And, given that Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for Airbus’ largest plane to date — the A380 — it seems fitting that SQ gets to share this honor.

We’ll have much more to share beginning next Thursday. Stay tuned for Facebook Live videosSnapchats, Tweets and Instagram posts (from me, too), along with a whole lot of content on the blog.

How to Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night

Whether you pulled an all-nighter to study for a test or you're just a regular night owl, you may be wondering how you can make it through the day on little or no sleep. It'll be hard to stay awake without dozing off, but not impossible. These tips will help you make the most of your day after staying up all night.

EditSteps

EditMaintaining Your Energy

  1. Eat breakfast. Studies have shown that people who eat a healthy, balanced breakfast in the morning are more alert and energetic than those who skip breakfast.[1]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Aim for foods high in protein, like eggs, tofu, yogurt, or peanut butter. Or choose nutrient-rich food options like oatmeal and fresh fruit. These foods will fuel your body through the day and give you the energy you need to stay awake and active.[2]
  2. Drink coffee or tea. Caffeinated beverages can help you combat sleepiness and make you feel more wakeful and energetic. And drinking coffee or tea can bring plenty of health benefits, too. These naturally caffeinated beverages are chock full of antioxidants[3], and recent studies suggest that drinking coffee can even decrease your risk of developing depression.[4]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Don't drink too much! Excessive caffeine consumption can cause anxiousness and irritability. Drinking too much coffee can also interfere with your ability to have a good night of sleep after you make it through the day.[5]
    • Opt for coffee over energy drinks. An 8 oz. cup of coffee typically contains more caffeine than the same serving size of most energy drinks.[6]
  3. Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is important to maintain your body's natural functions, and dehydration can actually make you feel even more tired.[7]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 3 Version 2.jpg
  4. Chew ice. The physical act of chewing keeps your body awake, and ice comes with the additional benefits of being refreshing and hydrating.[8]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 4 Version 2.jpg
  5. Take a snack break during the day. Snacks high in protein and vitamins, like nuts or fresh fruit, can help give you an energy boost between meals when your body starts to drag.[9]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  6. Take a nap, if you can. Even just a brief 15-20 minute nap can boost your energy levels and leave you feeling more alert, awake, and able to perform at work.[10]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Don't nap for too long. Napping for more than 30 minutes can lead to increased grogginess after waking.[11]
    • Remember that you may feel groggy for about 15 minutes after waking. It might be a good idea to drink coffee immediately after a nap.[12]
  7. Eat a hearty lunch. Your body needs most of its calories in the morning and afternoon. Give yourself the fuel you need when you need it most.[13]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Be sure to make healthy food choices. Overdoing it on calories or sugar at lunch can leave you feeling more tired in the afternoon.[14]

EditStaying Active

  1. Get in a light workout. Even a short, brisk walk can help wake you up and give you the energy you need to make it through the day.[15]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 8 Version 3.jpg
  2. Spend some time in the sun. Experts have found that being immersed in natural light can increase wakefulness and make you feel more alert as you go through your day.[16]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  3. Change your environment. If possible, work with the windows open to allow fresh air to enter, and try listening to music to keep you going.[17]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 10 Version 2.jpg

EditManaging Your Time

  1. Make a list. Plan out everything you need to do during the day, and arrange them in order of importance. This will help you remember everything you need to get done. It will also give you a sense of capability and provide you with a visual reminder of both what you've accomplished and what tasks remain.[18]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 11.jpg
  2. Work efficiently. Aim to get your most challenging or complex tasks done earlier in the day, when you have more energy.[19]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 12.jpg
  3. Reward yourself with a break. Disengaging from homework, studying, or work projects for a short period of time can improve productivity by making you feel more refreshed and recharged, and it can motivate you to get through your next set of tasks.[20].
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 13.jpg
  4. Return to your normal sleep schedule. After pulling an all-nighter, it's important to return to your regular habits. Go to bed around the time you normally would, or perhaps a little earlier than usual, and set your alarm for the same time you would normally wake up.[21]
Make It Through the Day After You Have Stayed up All Night Step 14.jpg

EditTips

  • If you are so tired you can barely keep your eyes open, (which is totally normal for this situation), splash yourself with water, dunk your head in a tub of ice water, or slap yourself really hard. These may not be very enjoyable ways to keep yourself awake, but they will do the trick.
  • Listen to loud music, preferably with headphones.
  • To keep yourself awake early in the day, drink an energy drink or have coffee with your breakfast, even soda, anything with caffeine.
  • Put red stop signs or warning signs around couches and beds so you remember not to lay down and rest, trust us, if you lay down and start relaxing you will doze off into slumber land and wake up around 5pm. This will ruin your sleep cycle!
  • Dance around the room or play a board game that's lengthy like monopoly to keep you up and focused.
  • When in the late afternoon (4-5), when you start getting very tired, make hyphy mud. Mix 3-4 teaspoons of instant coffee into a cup with Pepsi or other pop. Take 1 or 2 big gulps at first then sip the rest slowly over the next hour. That should keep you awake just long enough that when you crash, you're ready to get a full sleep.
  • Try getting warm, or take a warm shower. The warm water will help you relax and take your mind off of it. Or try a mixture of a hot watered bath/shower then to a cold one. It will awaken your senses and increases alertness.

EditWarnings

  • Don't drive if you're sleep-deprived.
  • Avoid staying up all night if you work in an environment where drowsiness could pose a risk to you or others.
  • "Microsleeping" is fine as long as you have an alarm or someone to wake you. Be careful as it can make you sleep longer than intended.

Very Cheap Malaysia Airlines Business Class Fares ex Bangkok & Phuket Are Back – Great For BA Tier Points !!

by Sebastian Powell

Malaysia Airlines has been running Business Class sales ex Thailand to various destinations worldwide which are great to collect Status Miles/Credits, especially if you credit to British Airways Executive Club.

mh-sale

This promotion is finally back with flights originating from Bangkok and Phuket with fantastic fares within Asia as well as to Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The booking window always varies so I felt it might be a good opportunity to once again bring this to the attention of our LoyaltyLobby readers in the region who might be able to utilize it.

There are many destinations which I will list below, however for the purpose of maximizing your status credits with British Airways it is key to select flights that are over a certain threshold to jump from just 40 Tier Points for shorter flights (such as the feeder BKK-KUL) up to 160 Tier Points for the connection depending on distance.

You can access the landing page for this sale on Malaysia Airlines website here.

The lowest fares are out of Phuket (HKT) with fantastic prices especially to long haul destinations in Australia and New Zealand as well as London Heathrow.

ex-hkt-fares

Ex Bangkok fares are slightly higher but still very reasonable:

ex-bkk-fares

Once you consult the website you see plenty of additional destinations available so you might want to have a look if there is something that suits your needs.

There is a pretty significant difference for example on the London fare where the price ex Phuket is 15,000 THB cheaper so it might be worth it to take a short domestic flight to HKT for 1,000-1,500 THB per way to catch the lower fare and save some extra money.

Unfortunately this time around the previously files fares to Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei are not available under this sale but Seoul, Osaka and Tokyo are.

These fares have many advantages since the destinations are actually very nice and useful for a holiday or business trip. You can incorporate many cities in one ticket through open jaw options and even go as far as include an overnight (transfer up to 24h) in Kuala Lumpur for the same price.

Conclusion

These fares have been coming and going for the last two years but weren’t available for at least 2 months now.

You can collect plenty of Tier Points or qualifying miles with these fares and at a very low price. Less than 1000 USD in Business Class to Australia and New Zealand or 1,200$ to the UK is crazy. Seoul and Tokyo ex Bangkok are great as well starting at 350-400 USD per Ticket.

Cathay Pacific’s Farewell 747 Flyover in Hong Kong

by Zach Honig

Earlier this week, Cathay Pacific announced that its version of the Queen of the Skies would be making a final farewell flight, giving folks in Hong Kong a chance to see the 747 in Cathay livery one last time. Well, this morning, at 10:23am local time, B-HUJ took off from HKG, and at 10:30am the plane began its flyover at just 195 knots and 1,950 feet. You can “play” the flight on Flightradar24 here.

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-8-21-44-am

Cathay Pacific captured a video of the flyover, which you can see below.

Our beloved #Cathay747 said her last goodbye to Hong Kong today, in a farewell flyover of her home city. pic.twitter.com/1zV5BYJDD6

— Cathay Pacific (@cathaypacific) October 8, 2016

Locals were able to snap some pretty fantastic photos as well — here’s one from Bloomberg photographer Justin Chin:

And some lucky Hong Kongers even managed to get on board:

While, sadly, this marks the end of Cathay Pacific’s 747, there’s no question that passengers will have a better in-flight experience flying the carrier’s newer planes, such as the Airbus A350. I’ve flown Cathay first on both the 747 and 777-300ER — the 777 seat was recently refreshed, and both products are nearly identical.

Unfortunately it can be much more difficult (though not impossible) to score multiple first-class awards on the 777, given that there are three fewer seats, but if you’re able to find availability there are some fantastic redemptions to be had.

Have you flown Cathay Pacific’s 747?

Fabulous Fridays: Pre-Order Meals For Business- And First Class Flights On Various Airlines – Case Malaysia Airlines Business Class

by Sebastian Powell

It’s another Fabulous Friday and this week we will talk about airlines that offer pre-order meal service for their Premium Class passengers.

ff-btcPre-ordering your meals can save you from the often blant and boring meal choices off the regular menu especially when taking a flight during the breakfast or late night hours.

Many airlines have now adapted the concept of offering their passengers in First and Business Class to pre-order specially designed main courses for their flight.

The most popular one that started it all is Singapore Airlines Book The Cook which is well known for it’s premium dishes on board Singapore Airlines with popular meal choices such as Lobster Thermidor even on Business Class flights. There are also a very wide variety of Singaporean and Indian dishes.

Then there is Thai Airways where pre-order meals are also available for many years already and I dare to say that passengers flying Thai are well advised to use this service because their on board choices are anything but stellar. My favorite dishes Thai offers are Beef Rossini and Lobster Thermidor.

Even American Airlines has now a pre-flight selection of entrees and so does British Airways in their ‘Manage my Booking’ section. Here is what BA offers me for my upcoming London-Bangkok flight in Premium Economy (World Traveler Plus):

ba-pre-flight-orderNow these are the same options they will have on board anyway but you certainly avoid that they run out of your favorite choice. I did not choose any meal because BA is famous for frequent operational upgrades to Business Class from WT+ for their Gold Members and ordering special meals often minimizes your chance for an upgrade.

The most positive experience however was on my recent flight with Malaysia Airlines Business Class between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing. I have flown this route at least half a dozen times now in the last two years and since Malaysia Airlines introduced their Chef On Call service I always pre-ordered my meals with them.

Here as well is the recommendation to use the pre-flight order whenever available because what’s offered on board is not really the most interesting. The flight from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur leaves at 1:40am and is pretty much a breakfast flight upon arrival with the exception of the serving of Satay right after takeoff. I can’t stand standard airplane breakfasts so I decided to order a nice Filet Mignon. Why not?

img_0247

The taste and quality of the beef filet on both routes was very good and as so often you can see a few jealous eyes of other passengers when they have to choose from the mediocre menu options while the steak is coming your way.

You can access the entire Malaysia Airlines Business Class Chef on Call Menu here.

Download (PDF, 6.58MB)

Their on call menu is available to/from select destinations only:

Chef-on-Call is only available for First Class and Business Class passengers with confirmed tickets travelling to/from Kuala Lumpur and any of the following cities: London, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Auckland, Incheon, Beijing, Shanghai, Narita and Kansai.

In fact this description is a bit misleading because it should read ‘between’ these cities listed above. For example I can not book the Chef on Call for Kuala Lumpur to Taipei. This is a big difference to for example Singapore Airlines where I can use Book The Cook to most destinations leaving Singapore except the very short ones.

Conclusion

I really like this service of having the choice of selecting a premium meal ahead of time rather than being limited to the 2 or max 3 choices on board if they are not running out of your first choice to begin with.

For some airlines such as Thai Airways and Malaysia Airlines this improves the inflight experience greatly as I mentioned before their regular line of F&B isn’t anything to write home about. Try it next time you fly on either of the featured airlines and make sure you select the meals 48 hours before your flight.

IndiGo To Introduce ‘Child Free’ Premium Quiet Zones On Their Aircraft

by Sebastian Powell
Jim Paull

Nice

Indian carrier IndiGo is the latest airline to introduce a ‘child free’ zone on their aircraft which will see the Premium Economy section limited to passengers aged 12 and above only.

indigo-a320

The carrier already drew criticism from various sides in regards to their decision but others might be applauding the move.

Many travelers (myself included) loathe nothing more than quarreling children on board an aircraft especially when it’s an overnight flight or they just want some quiet time. A few airlines (mostly in Asia) have so far experimented with limited young children to certain areas of the plane with IndiGo just being the latest.

The Economist (access here) had an article about it earlier this week.

IndiGo is facing criticism after it adopted a policy of not permitting children below 12 years of age on the premium seats. The airline said that it is following international norm of creating “quiet zones.”

Seats in rows 1-4 and 11-14 have been designated as “quiet zones” and children younger than 12, or unaccompanied minors, cannot pre-book them. The rows have extra leg space, better armrests and seat cushioning.

A FEW years ago a spate of airlines introduced child-free areas on their planes, in order to appeal to business travellers. Now another carrier has joined the list. This week, IndiGo, an Indian operator, said it was designating rows 1-4 and 11-14 (which includes the exit row) as “quiet zones”, out of bounds to children younger than 12. According to the International Business Times, the rows have extra leg space, better armrests and seat cushioning. It goes without saying that they also cost more.

It seems a peculiarly Asian phenomenon. Other airlines to have tested the concept include Scoot, a Singaporean budget carrier and AirAsia X of Malaysia. Back in 2013, Skift, a travel website, polled the big American airlines and found no appetite among them to follow suit. …

Flying in the U.S. is just mass transportation (any flying is really but in the U.S. carriers are just big Greyhound buses with wings) and it would probably be legally difficult to limit children from booking certain zones.

Children are not the only annoyance on flights. Snoring and intoxicated adult passengers are just as bad and just yesterday I encountered several of that species on the flight from Denpasar to Bangkok on Thai Airways to the point of where I asked the purser to please consider giving any more alcohol to these passengers.

Conclusion

I see nothing wrong with the decision if an airline decides to have an age limit on certain products. They must have done an analysis and figured that it won’t cost them any business, rather the opposite, when offering child free zoning on board their aircraft where people can pay a premium for having the security of not being around children.

Comic writer confirms Wonder Woman is ‘queer’

by AFP
Jim Paull

Now the movie will never be shown here, jewish actor, gay character, yeah.

wonder-womanSpeculation has been rife for many years over the sexuality of the Amazonian princess, who hails from the island Themyscira, which is populated solely by female warriors.

Although she becomes romantically involved with a man who washes up on the island, storylines over the years have implied, if not explicitly stated, that she has also been in love with women.

Greg Rucka, who returned to DC Comics this year to craft the “Rebirth” series commemorating Wonder Woman’s 75th year in print, told the Comicosity news website Wonder Woman was “queer.”

The word — which has several definitions — was defined by the interviewer as “involving, although not necessarily exclusively, romantic and/or sexual interest toward persons of the same gender.”

“When you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is ‘how can they not all be in same sex relationships?’ right? It makes no logical sense otherwise,” said Rucka, who worked on the character throughout the 2000s.

“You’re supposed to be able… to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women. But an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, ‘You’re gay.’ They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist.”

The announcement was mostly welcomed as good news on social media, although not all fans were happy.

“I just found out some people are actually upset Wonder Woman is queer. As if — what — you’re paranoid Wonder Woman might not date you?” tweeted Mike Drucker, a television comedy writer.

There were no clues to Wonder Woman’s bisexuality when Warner Bros screened the first trailer for the upcoming standalone “Wonder Woman” at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

The Amazonian heroine, played by Gal Gadot, is seen leaning over soldier Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) after he has washed up on her island.

“You’re a man?” she asks him, and he replies: “Yeah, do I not look like one?”

“Wonder Woman” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 2, 2017, focusing on a character who was introduced earlier this year in the widely-panned “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
