These 9 Adorable Airport Therapy Animals Will Calm Your Nerves

by Jennifer Wood
Jim Paull

Therapy pig, San Francisco. 😜 😜 😜

If you’re a pet parent, you know the only thing that feels better than being able to take your beloved four-legged friend on the road with you — and lots of hotels will accommodate you these days — is to see his or her fuzzy face upon your return. But when your own pets can’t be with you, there are plenty of airports that understand the therapeutic nature of a quick pet on the head of a friendly pup — or, say, pig. Here are 9 adorable airport therapy animals that you might encounter while traveling.

1. San Jose International Airport

The airport therapy animal concept started gaining traction in America following the events of 9/11, with California’s San Jose International Airport (SJC) leading the charge. It was an airport pastor who kicked the program off when she brought her own dog to work with her to help calm travelers’ frayed nerves, and it’s only grown from there. Kyra Hubis, a retired nurse who runs the program, works with a team of volunteers to walk pups like Gracie (below) through the airport terminals to offer travelers the chance for a friendly pet.

2. Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport

Rather than simply wait and hope that a therapy pooch passes you by, passengers can go right to where the dogs are at Minnesota’s Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). On October 1, 2015, Airport Foundation MSP — an organization that works to bring cultural activities to the airport’s terminals — debuted its Animal Ambassadors program, where a team of trained therapy dogs help calm frazzled passengers either before or after a flight.

“Just as people soften with the smile of a stranger, dogs can lighten a heavy mood,” writes the organization on its website. “Research shows that positive interactions with animals increase endorphins, oxytocin, prolactin and dopamine, the hormones associated with blood pressure regulation, pain relief, stress relief and joy.” And let’s face it: the chance to take an adorable dog selfie doesn’t hurt either.

3. Charlotte Douglas International Airport

The CLT Canine Crew made its four-legged debut at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in 2015 with a lineup of 15 dogs who greet passengers seven days a week. “We wanted a way to create a sense of place,” Lauri Golden, CLT’s manager of customer engagement — who has the pleasure of overseeing the all-volunteer crew of professional therapy dogs — told The Bark in 2016. “Our airport is a hub for American Airlines; 70 percent of traffic is connections, so the passengers just see the facility, not the city.”

Something tells us that one look at a little guy like McGrady — a deaf Australian Shepherd who understands hand signals — and you’ll be planning a return trip to Charlotte (or at least its airport) in the future.

"McGrady is extra special," says Lauri Golden of the adorable Australian Shepherd. Image courtesy of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

4. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

It only makes sense that “America’s Friendliest Airport” would want to employ a team of friendly pups to make that long layover fly by. In September, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) announced its Navigator Buddies program, which offers visitors the chance to rub the bellies and scratch behind the ears of a talented team of pooches.

“The mission at Sky Harbor is to be America’s Friendliest Airport and deliver world-class customer service every day,” Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton said when announcing the program. “Our new Navigator Buddies will provide an even friendlier and furrier way to help people who have questions and reduce their stress levels as they travel.”

5. San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco is one of the pet-friendliest cities in the US, so it’s no surprise that last December — three years after debuting its Wag Brigade of therapy dogs — San Francisco International Airport (SFO) introduced a new member to the team: LiLou, the world’s first therapy pig. And the skills she brings to her role as an airport ambassador are impressive: she can wave, shake, twirl and stand up on her back legs — and she does it all with a smile.

6. Los Angeles International Airport

Given LA’s reputation as a trendsetter, it’s hardly surprising Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) was one of the first airports in America to embrace the therapy animal concept. Its Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUP) program, which launched in 2013 with 30 teams of certified therapy dogs and handlers, now boasts a crew of more than 50 members.

“The dogs bring strangers together,” PUP director Heidi Heubner told The Bark. “We’re often afraid to talk, or are on our devices, but with the dogs, people are sharing stories and photos of their own dogs, talking about where they’re going. I never get tired of watching them. Sometimes my face hurts from smiling so much, watching them in action and listening to what the passengers are saying.”

7. Denver International Airport

It was only a matter of time, really. In what might now be seen as a bit of foreshadowing, Denver International Airport (DEN) launched its own therapy dog program in 2015: Canine Airport Therapy Squad, or CATS. In September, the airport welcomed its first non-canine member — a cat named Xeli (pronounced Zeelee), who spends a few hours each day hanging out on her cat tree and bidding travelers bon voyage.

“We’re really excited to have [Xeli],” airport spokeswoman Daria Serna told The Denver Post. “We know there are a lot of people who love cats just as much as people who love dogs. It will be great have her on the concourse visiting people and making people smile. She loves to meet people.”

It took three years, but Denver’s CATS program finally brought in a therapy cat! Denver International Airport’s Facebook page.

8. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport

Feeling anxious before a flight is common. Getting to play with a miniature horse in order to ease that anxiety is not. But thanks to a few of the adorable residents of Hamilton, Ohio’s Seven Oaks Farm, travelers making their way through Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) can spend some time bonding with some scaled-down equines.

9. Gerald R. Ford International Airport

At Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), the Gentle Fur in Action program works with West Michigan Therapy Dogs, Inc. to station teams of certified therapy dogs and their handlers throughout the airport. With canines at the ready in the waiting area, baggage claim, concourses and gates, both arriving and departing passengers have a chance for a cuddly encounter. (They also make a great distraction for kids on-the-go.)

Man arrested as smelly socks unleash chaos on Indian bus

by AFP

indian-busesNEW DELHI: Indian police arrested a man whose stinky socks caused a showdown on a bus as his fellow passengers protested the pungent odour, an officer said Saturday.

The man removed his shoes and socks on a bus going from the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh to New Delhi and put them near the aisle, police said.

Other passengers protested and asked the man to put away the offending socks or throw them out.

The man refused, sparking a heated confrontation that forced the bus driver to stop at a police station in Una district of Himachal Pradesh.

Una police chief Sanjeev Gandhi told AFP the bus stopped several times because of the smelly chaos before they came to the police station.

“He was arrested on charges of causing public nuisance and later released on bail,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi said the accused had threatened other passengers and caused a disturbance at the police station.

The man in turn filed a complaint against his fellow passengers and the bus crew for harassment and insisted his socks did not smell, the officer said.

He left the area in another bus a day later, police said.

Naples pizza twirling seeks nod as UNESCO ‘intangible’

by AFP

pizzaPARIS: Naples’ art of pizza twirling is a candidate to join UNESCO’s list of “intangible heritage” next week along with a wealth of other cultural treasures such as Saudi Arabian wall painting and Bangladeshi cane weaving.

Meeting on the South Korean island of Jeju, the UN cultural body’s World Heritage Committee will also consider whether to give special support for heritage that is struggling to survive.

Naples’ candidacy for pizza twirling has created a buzz in the southern Italian city where the art has been handed down for generations — as well as around the world.

Some two million people have joined a petition of support of Naples’ application, according to Sergio Miccu, head of the Association of Neapolitan Pizzaioli, who will be in Jeju for the proceedings.

“We’re confident the vote will be favourable,” Miccu told AFP in Rome, adding: “We’ll be giving out free pizza in the streets” if the age-old culinary tradition joins the prestigious list.

The custom goes far beyond the pizzaiolo’s spectacular handling of the dough — hurling it into the air in order to “oxygenate” it — to include songs and stories that have turned pizza-making into a time-honoured social ritual.

Thirty-four candidates are seeking to join the list of intangible heritage, which currently includes 365 traditions, art forms and practices from Spain’s flamenco dancing to Indonesian batik, to more obscure entries such as a Turkish oil wrestling festival and the Mongolian coaxing ritual for camels.

Saudi Arabia wants to see Al-Qatt Al-Asin, elaborate interior wall paintings traditionally done by women, inscribed on the list this year. The art, which promotes solidarity among women, is handed down through observation.

For its part, Bangladesh has put forward its tradition of Shital Pati, an intricate weaving craft using strips of green cane to produce mats and bedspreads.

Keeping the youth interested

The list of “intangible” cultural treasures was created in 2003, mainly to increase awareness about them, while UNESCO also sometimes offers financial or technical support to countries struggling to protect them.

Morocco is sounding the alarm this year for its martial dance called Taskiwin, and Turkey is concerned over its whistled language heritage.

Both are threatened by declining interest in the traditions among young people.

UNESCO began compiling a list for cultural and natural world heritage — physical properties such as Cambodia’s Angkor Wat or the Grand Canyon in the United States — in 1972.

The World Heritage list now comprises 814 cultural sites, 203 natural ones and 35 with both natural and cultural qualities such as Australia’s Uluru National Park, formerly known as Ayer’s Rock.

The committee winds up its review of nominations to the list of Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Friday.

Communist Hanoi gets its first McDonald’s

by AFP
Jim Paull

Woo-hoo

McDonaldHANOI: Global burger behemoth McDonald’s opened its first branch on Saturday in the historic heart of communist Hanoi, a conservative city renowned for its traditional — and cheap — Vietnamese staples beloved by food-obsessed locals.

Hungry customers lined up for Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets at the Vietnamese capital’s first location overlooking the tree-lined Hoan Kiem lake, which draws millions of tourists annually to see French-era colonial buildings and sample street-food favourites like pho noodle soup and banh mi sandwiches.

The restaurant is the first outside of the southern commercial hub Ho Chi Minh City, where 16 branches have opened since McDonald’s first came to Vietnam in 2014 to much fanfare, especially among the rapidly-growing middle class and American-obsessed youth.

The global fast food chain received a similarly warm welcome in Hanoi on Saturday, as hungry diners crammed into the two-storey eatery for a first taste of the Golden Arches.

For 84-year-old Tran Dinh Luyen, who fought against the US in the Vietnam War, the restaurant was a sign of warming ties with a former enemy.

“I am happy that McDonald’s has opened a restaurant in Hanoi. It’s a very famous American brand, so it shows how far US-Vietnam relations have come,” he told AFP after mowing down on a Big Mac with his daughter and granddaughter.

But not everyone agreed.

“It’s a rip-off
this fast food is for kids only, it’s not good at all,” 90-year-old Ta Xuan Huong said, espousing his love for traditional cuisine.

Some curious tourists stopped to see what all the fuss was about, perplexed that a brand ubiquitous in the West would draw so much attention.

“It’s kind of random to see McDonald’s opening
it’s an interesting cultural experience to see how important it is that the store is opening here,” American Dan Moore told AFP, after his wife remarked she might not have expected to find one of the most salient symbols of capitalism in the communist country.

The one-party state has seen dizzying economic growth in recent years as it has opened its doors to foreign investment — which has included an influx of western chains like Starbucks, KFC and Burger King.

Growth in the fast food sector has been buoyed by rapidly rising incomes — annual per capita income has more than doubled in the past decade to about $2,100 today — especially among under-30s, who make up half of Vietnam’s population of 93 million people.

The fast food industry in Vietnam has seen double-digit growth annually for the past five years, and the country has the highest 2017 growth in Asia-Pacific for fast food chains, according to market research firm Euromonitor International.

Though meals can cost as much as three times the local fare, customers are still showing strong appetite.

“Young people like to hang out in fast food restaurants as they are seen as a cool and nice place
and these customers also like the taste of the food,” Euromonitor analyst Samuel Huynh told AFP.

Church of Sweden to stop referring to God as 'he' or 'Lord'

by legitgov

Church of Sweden to stop referring to God as 'he' or 'Lord' --Head of largest Swedish Christian church says God is beyond human gender determination | 24 Nov 2017 | The Church of Sweden is urging its clergy to use gender-neutral language when referring to the supreme deity, refraining from using terms such as "Lord" and "he" in favour of the less specific "God." The move is one of several taken by the national Evangelical Lutheran church in updating a 31-year-old handbook setting out how services should be conducted in terms of language, liturgy, hymns and other aspects...The change was met with criticism, however. Christer Pahlmblad, an associate theology professor at Sweden's Lund University, told the Kristeligt Dagblad newspaper in Denmark that the move was "undermining the doctrine of the Trinity and the community with the other Christian churches".

The finance ministry, in a statement today, said the applications and updates of information could be carried out manually or online via the BR1M official portal at https://ebr1m.hasil.gov.my.

For manual application, forms can be obtained for free from any Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) branch, LHDN service centres and LHDN offices at Urban Transformation Centres.

The ministry said spouses of previous BR1M recipients who have passed away as well as applicants who were not eligible last year, must make fresh applications for BR1M 2018.

For existing recipients, updating of information should be done if there are changes to personal information or at least once every three years.

The ministry also confirmed the government has not issued any statement on BR1M via WhatsApp and social media.

“Official information can only be obtained via BR1M 2018 pamphlets distributed to all BR1M recipients and via its official portal at https://ebr1M.hasil.gov.my.

“The government hopes payments of BR1M 2018 would help lighten the people’s cost of living,” the ministry said.

Three coffees a day linked to more health than harm

by Reuters
Jim Paull

I B FkD

coffeeLONDON: People who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are more likely to see health benefits than harm, experiencing lower risks of premature death and heart disease than those who abstain, scientists said on Wednesday.

The research, which collated evidence from more than 200 previous studies, also found coffee consumption was linked to lower risks of diabetes, liver disease, dementia and some cancers.

Three or four cups a day confer the greatest benefit, the scientists said, except for women who are pregnant or who have a higher risk of suffering fractures.

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed drinks worldwide. To better understand its effects on health, Robin Poole, a public health specialist at Britain’s University of Southampton, led a research team in an “umbrella review” of 201 studies based on observational research and 17 studies based on clinical trials across all countries and all settings.

“Umbrella reviews” synthesize previous pooled analyses to give a clearer summary of diverse research on a particular topic.

“Coffee drinking appears safe within usual patterns of consumption,” Pool’s team concluded in their research, published in the BMJ British medical journal late on Wednesday.

Drinking coffee was consistently linked with a lower risk of death from all causes and from heart disease. The largest reduction in relative risk of premature death is seen in people consuming three cups a day, compared with non-coffee drinkers.

Drinking more than three cups a day was not linked to harm, but the beneficial effects were less pronounced.

Coffee was also associated with a lower risk of several cancers, including prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, gallstones and gout, the researchers said. The greatest benefit was seen for liver conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver.

Poole’s team noted that because their review included mainly observational data, no firm conclusions could be drawn about cause and effect. But they said their findings support other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake.

How to Dry Your Hair Fast

Jim Paull

No need now.

Drying your hair can be a lengthy process, especially if you have long, thick hair that requires more effort to style, and it can get even more difficult when you’re pressed for time. There are several ways to dry your hair faster than usual, including using conditioner and hairspray, blow-drying in sections and using a ceramic brush, and blotting with a microfiber towel, which can wick away excess moisture and accelerate the drying process.

EditSteps

EditGetting Rid of Excess Water in Your Hair

  1. Use a wide-tooth comb after washing your hair. Wide-tooth combs separate your hair and promote better airflow, which will help you get rid of the excess water in your hair. Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb before you leave the shower.[1]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 1 Version 2.jpg
  2. Wring or shake out your hair before stepping out of the shower. This speeds up the drying process and prevents your hair from being soaking wet immediately following a shower.
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Separate your hair into multiple sections and squeeze each section to wring out excess water.
    • Flip your head upside down and run your fingers through your hair to shake out droplets of water.
  3. Blot your hair using a microfiber towel. Microfiber towels are soft and very absorbent, and can soak up more water than other towels without damaging your hair cuticles.[2]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Separate your hair into multiple sections and blot each section using a dry towel for the best results.
  4. Use paper towels if you don’t have a microfiber towel. Paper towels can soak up more water than regular towels while preventing frizz. Use several paper towels to soak up the water in your hair. Don’t forget to recycle them when you’re done![3]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Long, thick hair may require more paper towels than short and/or thin hair.
  5. Wrap your hair in a towel turban. Wearing a towel turban while getting ready allows the towel to absorb excess water and moisture from your hair. Tilt your head forward so that you're facing the floor. Position your towel at the back of your neck horizontally and start draping your hair with both of your hands. Twist the towel gently, not too tightly, and lift your head back up to its original position.[4]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Replace it with a new towel when your existing towel turban becomes heavy and wet.

EditUsing Hair Products for a Faster Dry

  1. Treat your hair with conditioner while bathing. Conditioner locks in moisture and helps repel water to prevent your hair from absorbing more water than necessary following a bath or shower. Apply conditioner, mostly focusing on the ends of your hair, and rinse after a few minutes.
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • You can also use a leave-in conditioner for anti-frizz and a shiny look as well as a faster dry.[5]
  2. Use hair products that say “blow-dry” or “quick dry” on their label. Many commercial hair products such as lotions and primers now contain heat-conducting substances that wick moisture away from your hair. Apply these products to your hair as directed, prior to blow-drying or air-drying your hair, and distribute them evenly on your head.[6]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Don’t apply any products until your hair is towel-dried and the excess water is soaked.[7]
  3. Use hairsprays with alcohol. Normally, it’s not advised to use products with alcohol since they can make your hair dry, but if you’re really in a rush and your hair is still wet, try using a hairspray or mousse that has some alcohol content—it will help you hair dry faster.[8]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 8 Version 2.jpg

EditBlow-Drying Your Hair

  1. Use an ionic hair dryer with a high wattage. Ionic hair dryers can help smooth your hair better and prevent frying. Choose stronger ones with a wattage of at least 2000 to speed up the drying process as much as possible.[9]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  2. Blow-dry your hair outside of the bathroom. It might come naturally to blow-dry your hair in the bathroom but the after-shower steam won’t be helpful for drying it fast. Consider moving to your bedroom or another room to avoid dampness in the air and accelerate the drying process.[10]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • As an alternative, open up the bathroom window and let the steam evaporate for a few minutes before you blow-dry your hair.
  3. Rough-dry your hair before reaching for the brush. Prior to using a brush during blow-drying, use your fingers as a comb and toss your hair from one side to the other. Keep doing this rough-drying method for 50 to 75 percent of the time, and then switch to a brush. Dry upwards for more volume, and downwards for smooth and glossy hair.[11]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 11.jpg
  4. Use a microfiber brush or ceramic round-barreled brush for the rest of your blow-dry. A microfiber brush has the ability to absorb moisture while you brush, and a ceramic round-barreled brush can conduct the heat coming from the dryer onto your hair strands while also shaping them nicely. Such brushes with fewer bristles than regular ones also allow for more airflow.[12]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 12.jpg
  5. Divide your hair into four sections for increased efficiency. Although this may sound like a lot of work, it actually helps you dry your hair more efficiently and effectively instead of handling all of your hair at once. Once you section your hair in four, hold three of the sections in place with clips.[13]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 13.jpg
    • Working in manageable sections is beneficial for nearly all styling techniques, not just drying hair.
  6. Start with the bottom layers. This prevents the top layers from soaking up excess water after they’ve already dried, especially when combing or brushing your hair. Flip your head over, then blow-dry the bottom layers before moving on to the top layers.[14]
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 14.jpg
  7. Spend more time drying the roots. The ends of your hair often dry faster than its roots, which tend to finish drying last. While blow-drying your hair, focus on the roots, although you should try to avoid keeping the dryer at one place and frying your hair.
Dry Your Hair Fast Step 15.jpg

EditTips

  • Consider using dry shampoo if you need to wash your hair and you’re running short on time. Dry shampoo refreshes your scalp by soaking up sweat and minimizing grease without the need for water.[15]

EditWarnings

  • Avoid blow-drying your hair when its strands are soaking wet, since this can lead to hair damage and dry, frizzy hair. Always blot your hair dry using a towel before using a hair dryer.

Tips for Traveling With Pets: Airline and Hotel Policy Roundup

by The Points Guy

My life changed back in January 2013 when I added a new member to my family: my French bulldog Miles (get it?). Since then, the little guy has traveled all over the US and to Canada with me, and I can’t imagine life without him. However, traveling with a pet is a whole different experience, and I’ve learned a lot since adding him to the family. Not only are there great strategies to maximize pet travel, but there are also concerns, policies and strategies to make the process fun, painless and rewarding.

It pays to know the policies of the major airlines and hotel chains since many do allow pets to travel with their owner, but impose fees, restrictions and other guidelines that you will need to know. I always check BringFido.com as a resource on pet-friendly airlines, accommodations and experiences wherever I happen to be traveling.

So I wanted to round up the pet policies of the major North American airlines and hotel chains in one place as a handy quick reference.

Hotels

Like airlines, hotels are increasingly catering to travelers who want to bring their four-legged friends (and in some cases, winged and scaly creatures as well!) along. Here are the policies of the major chains.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-18-at-2.07.55-PM

Best Western

These’s no universal pet policy here, but more than 1,600 of the chain’s hotels are pet-friendly, and famed dog whisperer Cesar Millan was once a spokesperson.

Species/size: Pet-friendly Best Western properties will allow up to two domestic dogs in a rented room, with a maximum size of 80 pounds per animal. Other pet types such as cats, birds, monkeys and snakes are allowed at the discretion of each property and require prior approval.
Fees: Maximum charge of $20 per day for each room with a pet or multiple pets or a maximum per-week charge of $100. A refundable damage deposit of up to $50 per stay may be required of all guests with a pet.

Club Carlson

There’s no single pet policy for this chain that includes the Radisson and Country Inn & Suites brands, but there tends to be a per-night charge of $25-$75 per pet. Some hotels only allow guide animals, and some don’t allow pets at all, so be sure to check the individual property you’ll be staying at.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-18-at-2.18.34-PM

Hilton

Once again, the pet policies vary from property to property and brand to brand, but here are the standards at a few of the Hilton brands.

Hilton itself: $50-$75 non-refundable fee, one pet per room
DoubleTree: More than 120 properties allow pets but require a non-refundable service fee of up to $75.
Embassy Suites: $50-$75 non-refundable fee, pets up to 55 pounds

Hyatt

You can find a listing of Hyatt’s pet-friendly hotels here. Rates vary by property, but in general, here are the guidelines:

Participating Andaz, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt, Hyatt Regency and Park Hyatt locations offer the following for your canine companion. Note that cats are usually allowed as well, but dogs definitely get more perks.

  • A dog welcome letter and door hanger at check-in
  • A special dog bed, bowl, ID tag, welcome card and amenity in guestroom
  • A designated dog walk area complete with convenient, fully stocked cleanup stations
  • A non-refundable cleaning fee will be charged to the guest (varies by hotel)  — usually $75-$150

Screen-Shot-2017-05-18-at-2.24.11-PM

Participating Hyatt Place and Hyatt House locations welcome:

  • Two pets per guestroom or suite
  • Pets that are housebroken and do not exceed 50 pounds
  • Most Hyatt House properties welcome both dogs and cats
  • A non-refundable $75 fee will be charged to the guest

IHG

This chain includes brands like InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn, and offers pet-friendly listings by country. Rates vary by brand and property, but tend to be around the $200 mark for InterContinentals, $50 at Holiday Inns and $100 at Hotel Indigo locations.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-18-at-2.30.09-PM

Kimpton

This is probably the pet-friendliest chain of the bunch. with the most comprehensive list of pet amenities.
Restrictions: None. Per Kimpton’s site, “At every Kimpton boutique hotel, we invite you to bring your furry, feathery or scaly family member — no matter their size, weight, or breed, all at no extra charge.”
Amenities: Cozy pet beds for loan, food and water bowls, fresh water and snacks in the lobby, personal greeting from management, concierge list of local pet-friendly attractions and businesses, and even a Director of Pet Relations at select locations. Read a review of a Kimpton stay by TPG’s resident canines, Miles and Hootie.

Marriott

1,645 hotels among Marriott’s 5,000-plus properties are pet-friendly. The restrictions, fees and amenities vary from location to location, but there tends to be a non-refundable sanitation fee of $75 per stay

Ritz-Carlton

There’s no universal pet policy, but many of the hotels in this Marriott-owned luxury chain allow pets up to 25 pounds with a one-time cleaning fee of $125-$150 depending on the property and a $50 per-night boarding charge.

Starwood

Pet policies vary by property but usually include a $75-$200 one-time non-refundable cleaning fee and allow dogs up to 75 pounds. W Hotels offer the PAW (Pets Are Welcome) program and give dogs amenities including pet beds and food bowls as well as a welcome bag of treats, gifts and bags for waste. W properties tend to allow dogs up to 40 pounds and charge a $100 non-refundable cleaning plus a $25 per day boarding fee.

Spending Strategy

Remember, even if you end up paying extra fees to bring your pets along, there are ways to maximize your points and miles for it. If you have the Platinum Card from American Express, you can select the airline you tend to fly as your rebate partner and receive $200 a year in statement credits on incidental fees, such as checked bags and in-flight refreshments. The Amex Platinum card is also a great pick if you’re paying an airline fee out of pocket, since it earns 5x points on airfare and these pet fees show up as airfare charges.

Miles enjoying the hotel pool. Photo by @thepointsguy
Miles enjoying the hotel pool. Photo by @thepointsguy

The Chase Sapphire Reserve gets you 3x points on airfare and hotels, so if you’re going to get hit by a pet fee, you might as well try and maximize your points-earning. Another option is the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard, because if you use it to pay for incidental airline and hotel fees — such as pet charges — you can redeem your miles for those fees once they hit your statement at a rate of 1 cent per mile and remember, you get a 5% refund on redemptions with the card. So even though you’re paying extra, there are ways to make the most of it and rake in the bonus points.

"It Is Not That I Love Rome Any Less, It Is That I Love Caesar More !"

by Syed Akbar Ali
Jim Paull

Hey! I love eating the leaves.
"Indians use daun kari or curry leaves to make their curries. The curry leaf only flavors the curry. It is not eaten. After flavoring the curry, the daun kari is just thrown away. That is the nature of curry leaves. There was only one person I knew who actually ate the curry leaves. She was a young Chinese girl. I too chew and swallow the curry leaves. Nothing goes to waste."

The correct quote should be "It Is Not That I Love Caesar Any Less, It Is That I Love Rome More !".   That is what  humongo-Anwar-crony Zahid Hamidi said when Anwar was kicked out of UMNO in 1998.

Here is an interesting picture.  Zahid visited Anwar in hospital as well.

Well Kepala Bapak and Zahid have visited Anwar Ibrahim in hospital. The fact is Anwar is still a prisoner, under the care of the prison authorities. He is not just a patient in a hospital. To visit a prisoner who is in hospital, you still need the approval of the Prisons Department or the Ministry of  Home Affairs.

If Kepala Bapak and Zahid can visit Anwar in hospital, then others should also be allowed to visit him especially all the PKR people. I am sure Sivarasa, Latheefah, Tian Chua etc would like to visit Anwar in hospital  as well.

If they are denied, then it is proof enough that Kepala Bapak and Zahid's visit was not just any ordinary visit but a special visit to cut a deal with Anwar.

Talk is Anwar will be pardoned (AFTER the elections).
But no possibility of Anwar becoming PM.
Wan Azizah will also retire.
Nurul Izzah will be made a Cabinet Minister.
This is just talk ok.

If Kepala Bapak cuts a deal with Anwar, it will NOT backfire on them.
YES this will help Kepala Bapak win the elections.
The Malay voters will be less confused.
If Kepala Bapak, Hadi Awang and Anwar Ibrahim appear on the same stage it will be a major show of Malay unity. For the first time in almost 70 years, Malay politics would be united. Just like the time BEFORE Pas split off from UMNO about 70 years ago.

The Malay voter will only see Malay unity.

Pakatan Harapan will be screwed.
Pakatan Harapan will only have Bersatu, DAP,  Amanah and Warisan.

In this scenario, the future of the Malays will be totally screwed.
Totally and completely screwed.

If Kepala Bapak cuts a deal with Anwar, then what happens to the likes of Sivarasa, Latheefah and Tian Chua? Sivarasa and Latheefah will find out that they are just Indians. Tian Chua will find out that he is just a Chinese.

Indians use daun kari or curry leaves to make their curries. Nothing goes to waste.

Japan railway ‘deeply sorry’ after train leaves 20 seconds early

by AFP
Jim Paull

Haha

20trainjapan1

TOKYO: A Japanese railway operator has issued a deep apology for the “tremendous nuisance” caused by a train departing 20 seconds early, surprising even a nation renowned for both punctuality and politeness.

The Tsukuba Express train linking Tokyo and the capital’s northern suburbs pulled out of Minami Nagareyama Station at 9:44:20 instead of 9:44:40.

“We deeply apologise for causing tremendous nuisance to customers,” said the Tsukuba Express company.

“There was no complaint from customers over this incident,” said the firm, which added that no one missed the train due to the premature departure.

Japanese railway services, including shinkansen bullet trains, are famous for their world-beating punctuality.

Even the slightest delay prompts an effusive apology from the train guard, which often lasts longer than the hold-up itself.

With trains running the same route every few minutes to cope with huge numbers of passengers, even brief delays can back up the whole network causing overcrowding.

Stations in Toyko employs dozens of staff — with their famous white gloves — to ensure the prompt departure of trains and to manage the crush during rush hour.

The bullet trains in Japan are also famed for their customer service, with one offering passengers an onboard footbath to soothe their travelling woes.

The train firm said it was “surprised” by the attention the story was getting, saying: “We have issued similar apologies for trains that departed earlier than scheduled before.”

A spokesman told AFP the apology was issued because strict safety procedures were not followed.

“What matters is not the 20 seconds
The point is that our formal procedure should be this: A sound rings 15 seconds before the departure, followed by an announcement asking for caution due to the closing doors, and then the doors shut,” he said.

Lax management could cause safety problems in the future, the spokesman said. “There are sometimes passengers who try to jump on the train
they could be caught in doors” if the doors shut without warning, he said.

But the apology had several social media users scratching their heads.

“This is surprising even to Japanese,” said one user with the handle @takamin_.

“A weird country in which a 20-second difference prompts a sincere apology while faking quality data on aluminium and steel products or misconduct on car check-ups are done just like that,” another tweet read.

This was a reference to a recent string of corporate scandals that has floored the reputation of Japan Inc.

Car giants Nissan and Subaru have admitted that uncertified staff had inspected vehicles while Kobe Steel has been embroiled in a quality data-faking scandal.

However, @cindy176 just commented: “Everyone should be more relaxed.”

Military has SOP for flood relief, no need DPM’s approval

by Vanesha Shurentheran
Jim Paull

Here.

arsyad-rajiPETALING JAYA: There is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) when it comes to the deployment of military personnel for natural disasters, said Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot).

Patriot president Brigadier-General (Rtd) Mohd Arshad Raji said calling upon the Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi seeking aid from the armed forces was not necessary.

“We have a command of control, an SOP, and it is very clear, and applies to all the states. When there is an emergency the State Security Council (JKKN) should be automatically activated.

“Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng may not have been briefed or there was no military commander there to brief him and advise him,” Arshad said during a press conference here today.

Lim had reached out to the home minister early yesterday morning seeking military assistance for flood relief, and the latter had agreed to send aid.

Meanwhile, Arshad said there should be a local military commander representing JKKN to aid Lim in such situations.

“I have been a military commander, I know the process of flood relief.

“A military commander should be with the JKKN, the state secretary, and with the chief minister accompanying him wherever he goes and he says what he needs.

“Something went wrong in the Penang situation,” he said.

He said according to the National Security Council (NSC) Order 20, there is a directive on how military troops should be deployed in the event of any natural disaster.

Lim’s appeal to Zahid came at 3am yesterday, after Penang had recorded an equivalent of one-and-a-half’s month’s rainfall in less than 24 hours.

The DAP secretary-general said this was likely due to the effects of Typhoon Damrey which had wreaked havoc in Vietnam the day before.

He said Butterworth recorded 372mm of rain last night — the highest on record in the state. The previous highest recorded rainfall was 315mm at the Air Itam Dam not too long ago.

“I am made to understand that Penang is experiencing the effects of Typhoon Damrey, which has caused havoc in Vietnam and killed nearly 20 people there.

The flooding was also blamed on the high tide phenomenon, coupled with rubbish in drains that blocked smooth flow of water.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecast more rain in the northern states.

It has issued an “orange” alert warning to indicate continuous rainfall with strong winds in Kedah, Perlis, and Penang.

The National Security Council is coordinating with police and military to assist flood victims.

About 2,800 people have been placed in flood relief centers. In Kedah, 2,000 have also been evacuated, while 100 were evacuated in Perak.

Bangladesh police rescue tigers, lions from smugglers

by AFP
Jim Paull

Awwwww

tigerDHAKA: Bangladesh police on Monday rescued four tiger and lion cubs that they said were being smuggled to India and arrested two suspects.

Police said they were investigating whether the tiger cubs were poached from the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, which has a significant population of endangered Bengal tigers.

But they had no idea where the lion cubs could have come from.

Police acting on a tip-off found the animals in wooden boxes in a car in the western city of Jessore, district police chief Anisur Rahman told AFP.

“We detained two people in this connection. They are animal smugglers who were delivering the cubs to a man at Sharsha,” Rahman said, referring to a town on the Indian border.

“We suspect they were being brought here to be smuggled to India,” he said.

Bangladesh brought in new laws in 2010 to protect wildlife, but poaching remains rampant.

In 2012, the country’s elite police rescued three Bengal tiger cubs after a raid in the capital.

The tiger population in the 10,000 square-kilometre (3,861 square-mile) Sunderbans forest dropped to just over 100 in 2015 from an estimated 440 a decade earlier.

The rescue comes just months after Bangladesh police declared victory over crime in the Sundarbans, crediting a gun buyback scheme.

Malu pesan makanan Itali sebab tak kenal pasta

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

Beginners course.

Mujurlah, segalanya berjalan lancar.

Fakta menarik mengenai pasta:
