A&W dispute: Mayor should’ve consulted state govt, says councillor

by Soo Wern Jun
Jim Paull

Someone is getting payed.

Petaling-Jaya-mayor-Mohd-Azizi-Mohd-ZainPETALING JAYA: The Petaling Jaya mayor should have referred the dispute over development plans for the Lorong Sultan A&W site to the state government instead of relying on provisions prioritising the decision of the one-stop centre (OSC) committee, says a Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor.

Referring to the incident on Monday in which he was ejected from a full board meeting, Sean Oon said Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain wanted to “shut the matter down” based on OSC provisions that say the committee’s decision is final.

“By right, he should refer the matter to the state government because we have voiced our objections,” he said, adding that this was provided for in the Local Government Act 1976.

Speaking to FMT, he warned that the incident would set a precedence for future decision-making processes if left unaddressed.

The meeting in question was said to have convened to decide on a recent OSC ruling which approved the development plans of landowner KUB Malaysia Bhd for the A&W site.

The councillors reportedly disagreed with the approved 1:8 plot ratio.

Following Oon’s ejection, another 10 members decided to walk out of the meeting in protest.

‘Decision based on an impossible score’

Oon said under MBPJ’s point system, KUB had scored 7.2 out of the full eight points, with the deficit reportedly due to KUB’s inability to fit a park within the development area.

However, Azizi had not explained why he wanted to give the landowner the full eight points when it was only allowed 7.2, he said.

“If he wanted to give (KUB) 8.0, he had a duty to inform the other councillors why. He didn’t explain that.

“This is a decision made on an impossible score. Yet, the mayor chose to approve it.

“We want the state to look at the matter, whether the mayor has acted ultra vires – beyond his power – and whether the council can send the proposal to the OSC for a relook. We want it to be discussed again.”

As a next course of action, Oon said, the councillors had brought the matter to the state government and were awaiting feedback.

‘Why 25 councillors if decisions are made by 4?’

Oon added that only four of the 25 councillors were part of the OSC committee.

“Including the mayor, there are five persons in the OSC. Twenty-one councillors were not in the OSC meeting. We deserve to know what was discussed and why such decisions were made.”

Noting that councillor Derek Fernandez had not been present at the meeting, Oon asked why there were 25 councillors if decisions could be made by four people.

“The reason why the remaining councillors’ feedback is important is to ensure there are proper checks and balances within the local council,” he added.

“We can’t put too many people in the OSC. It would make things very messy. So we put five, but it does not mean that these five have all the power to decide what happens in the entire Petaling Jaya.”

Oon said his removal from the board meeting was against the Local Government Act 1976, and that Azizi had not followed the necessary procedures before ejecting him.

Saying the mayor failed to issue a mandatory warning before ejecting him, Oon claimed he had been singled out because he took up Azizi’s “invitation” to be relieved as chair of the meeting.

“He kept repeating to me that if we were not happy with him chairing the full board meeting, we could vote for him to be removed as the chairperson of the meeting.

“So the fourth time he said it, I proposed that he be removed. That was when he signalled for the auxiliary police to remove me.”

‘Never before in MBPJ history’

According to Oon, no councillor had ever before been expelled in the history of MBPJ.

He also asked why the board meeting was treated differently from meetings in the past.

“Why did he stop the press from recording? Why did the mayor chase reporters out from the meeting?” he said, adding that the recording of the full board meeting had been taken off the MBPJ website.

It is common practice for meeting proceedings to be posted on the site for those who missed the live streaming.

Fellow MBPJ councillor Cynthia Gabriel also said the walkout was unprecedented.

She said the Selangor menteri besar should instruct that the matter be brought back to the OSC committee for review.

“He also needs to demand explanations from the mayor and institute disciplinary action if he is found to have abused his power.

“This is the first time councillors have walked out of a full board meeting,” she said.

Emirates First-Class Flight Attendants Know Wine, Makeup — And You

by Katherine Fan

If flight attendants are front-line defenders, Emirates first-class flight attendants are the airline’s elite forces.

In Emirates’ first-class suites, top-notch customer service is as much a part of the Emirates “wow factor” experience as innovations like the digital virtual windows. Joanna Collins, a Dubai-based British flight attendant, recently shared some of the rigorous demands required to qualify for “special ops” within the award-winning airline.

Every passenger has a dossier

Before each flight, the flight attendants review the customers who will be traveling on board, including any VIPs. The flight attendants learn their names and any relevant information, which is also accessible through on-board tablets. In-flight, the tablets are also used to record their food preferences, dietary requirements, any hobbies, their incoming and outbound destinations, and even whether or not the passengers will be tired on the next leg of their travels. The information is then passed along to the next crew.

Passengers occasionally make strange requests. “I did have a couple ask if they could use a crew cart to rock their baby to sleep”, Collins said. “I told her that I would love to help, but it unfortunately wouldn’t fit our safety procedures.”

First-class calls for serious foodie training

Emirates’ first-class silver service dining calls for flight attendants to know in-depth about the cuisine and service they provide.

In First Class, we have ‘silver service’ dining, so appetizers, main courses, and desserts are all served at different times, and customers can ‘dine on demand’ whenever they want. We’re taught all the etiquette about cutlery and the different plates used for each course.”

“When you’re serving things like Dom Perignon and Bordeaux, you need to have a thorough understanding of what you’re pouring. We need to know the difference between old world and new world wines, as well as champagnes, bourbons, whiskeys, and other spirits.”

There’s a dress, makeup, and jewelry code

First-class flight attendants may sport nude or light pink polish, or a French manicure. However, Emirates is very particular about the red associated with its brand, and red nail polish shades must fall within guidelines set by the Imaging and Grooming Department.

“An ‘Emirates red’ lipstick with lip liner is required,” Collins said. “We like to use Mac’s Russian Red because it stays for a long time.”

Eyeshadow must be either black or beige, and liquid eyeliner with the signature “flick” is recommended. Some flight attendants prefer a more natural look, while others opt for a bolder, creative look. The airline even offers makeup and skincare classes.

Hair must be pinned back either in a French twist or a bun, which can be dressed up with a red scrunchie. Pearl earrings, diamond or crystal studs, and simple watches are the only jewelry allowed.

The standard uniform is a skirt and jacket set paired with a white shirt, and topped off with a hat and scarf. Every crew member wears the same color except for the chief flight attendant, also known as a purser, who wears brown.

Flight attendants are required to wear heels in the airport and during the boarding process, but are allowed to change into red flats after take-off if they prefer. After take-off flight attendants also change into “service attire”, swapping the standard uniform jacket for a vest.

Recipe: Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili — Quick and Easy Weeknight Dinners

by Patty Catalano
Jim Paull

Mmmm

Despite what some Texans believe, the best chili is one where beans take center stage and vegetables get some of the spotlight. So for this number, pinto and kidney beans kick things off by spending the day simmering in a warmly spiced tomato broth. By the time you lift the lid after a long day, you will find the beans tender and the liquid thickened. Half a poblano pepper and a dash of chili powder lend a mild heat, but the secret to making this chili sing is the last-minute addition of sweet corn kernels and a splash of apple cider vinegar.

The heat of this vegetarian chili quickly thaws frozen corn kernels, preserving the pop of fresh, sweet flavor. The zing of apple cider vinegar wakes up the earthy, umami-rich flavors that mellow during cooking. Chili is a thick, hearty one-pot meal best cooked low and slow, so put away the Dutch oven and plug in the slow cooker for this one.

IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad dead at 91

by Reuters
Jim Paull

He will shortly be packed in a flat box and buried with his beloved raskog.

kampardSTOCKHOLM: Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad, who built a global business empire with revolutionary flat-pack furniture and was known for his contempt for taxes, died aged 91, the Swedish furnishing giant said on Sunday.

The company said in a statement that Kamprad “passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones” at his home in the southern Swedish region of Smaland on Saturday “following a brief illness”.

“His legacy will be admired for many years to come and his vision – to create a better everyday life for the many people – will continue to guide and inspire us,” Jesper Brodin, CEO and president of the Ikea Group, said in the statement.

Born in 1926 to a farming family in the southern Swedish region of Smaland, Kamprad founded the company at age 17.

Despite his enormous success and wealth, Kamprad’s modest spending habits bordered on the obsessive.

In 1973 he fled Sweden’s higher tax structure for Denmark before seeking even lower taxes in Switzerland.

Starting in 2010 Kamprad gradually made way at the helm of the company for his three sons, finally returning to live in Sweden in 2014.

Kamprad announced in 2013 that he would be stepping down from the board of Inter Ikea, owner of the furniture giant’s concept and brand, and his youngest son became chairman.

The Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2014 cited leaked tax files from Luxembourg when it identified Ikea as one of the giant multinationals fingered for corporate tax avoidance by shuffling money to tax havens.

Last year, the European Commission announced that it had launched an investigation into Ikea’s tax deals in the Netherlands.

The group insists that it complies fully with national and international tax regulations.

Kamprad was also known for his ties to the Swedish Nazi party during his early days.

Sweden was neutral in World War II, and its Nazi party remained active after 1945. The Ikea founder said he stopped attending its meetings in 1948.

Mattis sees Indonesian forces drink snake blood, roll in glass

by Reuters
Jim Paull

Hahahahahaha. Because those "unique skills" are always needed in today's military theater. "...drink snake blood, roll in glass, break bricks with their heads, walk on fire, and more, in a rare military demonstration on Wednesday meant to show the unique skills of Indonesia’s military."

mattis

JAKARTA: US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis saw Indonesian troops drink snake blood, roll in glass, break bricks with their heads, walk on fire, and more, in a rare military demonstration on Wednesday meant to show the unique skills of Indonesia’s military.

Pentagon chiefs are accustomed to seeing foreign forces carry out more routine military demonstrations during foreign travel and, ahead of Wednesday’s event, the press travelling with Mattis was expecting a hostage rescue drill.

The ceremony at Indonesia’s armed forces headquarters was far more theatrical, however, even featuring a blindfolded soldier shoot out a balloon held between the legs of one of his colleagues. At least one shot missed, although no one appeared injured.

To the sounds of beating drums, the Indonesian soldiers performed a series of gripping martial arts techniques, breaking what appeared to be concrete bricks with their heads. They also smashed stacks of burning blocks with their hands.

Perhaps the highlight was a demonstration involving live snakes, which Indonesian forces brought out in bags and scattered on the ground, just feet from where Mattis was standing. That included a King Cobra, which widened its neck as it if were going to attack.

The soldiers then cut off the snake heads and fed the snake blood to each other, as the crowd looked on. At least one Indonesian soldier bit a snake in half.

At the end of the demonstration, to the tune of the movie “Mission Impossible,” the Indonesian forces carried out a hostage rescue operation, deploying stealthily from helicopters – with police dogs. The dogs intercepted the gunman.

“As you can see, the dogs bit the terrorist,” the narrator concluded.

Mattis did not immediately comment on the demonstration, which came at the end of a three-day visit to Indonesia. He travels next to Vietnam.

A Check-In Disaster and Bad Food: Across the Pacific for Just $300 With Air Asia X

by Anthony Cofrancesco

Ever since former Time Warner executive Tony Fernandes acquired then-bankrupt AirAsia in 2001 for the sum of one ringgit, about 25 US cents, the Malaysia-based airline has been expanding at a breakneck pace. What started as a company with $11 million in debt has since been transformed into one of the largest carriers in Asia, moving 36 million passengers per year with a fleet of Airbus single-aisle jets.

In 2007, Fernandes launched the low-fare, long-haul offshoot AirAsia X, which is also growing fast — it carried 1.49 million passengers in the third quarter of 2017, a jump of 23 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. TPG reviewed its Premium Flatbed product in 2015, but when the carrier announced a 2017 expansion to the USA, we wanted to check out its economy class. After seeing the rapid expansion of low-cost carriers like WOW, Norwegian and Primera Air to Europe, I wondered if this could be the start of $200-$400 round-trip flights between North America and Asia. Having flown the carrier numerous times on shorter flights within Asia, I was curious to see how I’d feel after spending a combined 14 hours in economy.

Booking

As of now, AirAsia X’s service to the United States will only get you as far as Hawaii. I decided to book a one-way flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Honolulu (HNL), which included a small stopover of two hours in Osaka, Japan (KIX).

The AirAsia website is easy to navigate and much easier than booking over the phone. I wanted to experience this flight as economically as possible so I booked the AirAsia “low fare” which is the most basic economy fare. Similar to most low-cost carriers, I was presented with a range of upgradeable options during the booking process, such as Premium Flex, but I ignored them.

Several premium options such as Premium Flex were made available during the booking process.

The AirAsia baggage policy permits passengers to bring one piece of cabin baggage and a personal item for a combined weight that must not exceed  7 kilos, or 15.4 lbs. To save money I brought only a backpack and small bag that fit within these restrictions. In total, the one-way flight set me back 1236 MYR ($313.96 US).

The entire cost of the trip with two meals was 1236 MYR.

The only additional upgrades I bought were two meals I purchased during booking for 18 MYR ($4.57 USD). If you are going to buy a meal, don’t wait until you are on the plane. Not only are the prices significantly higher, but a different menu is used on the Kuala Lumpur to Osaka leg, with prices starting at $16.

Purchasing meals during the booking process is the most economical way to go.

I paid using my Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card, primarily for the incredibly valuable Visa Infinite perks like trip delay protection. If my flight was canceled or delayed by more than 12 hours I could have up to $500 to cover incidentals like meals and accommodations.

Check-In

AirAsia’s main hub is in KLIA2, the low-cost carrier terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time as the terminal is quite vast and can be overwhelming.

cap

The AirAsia computer system was down for quite a while causing all customer service lines to become extremely long. Having now missed my flight, I proceeded to the customer service desk for rebooking. The next flight to Honolulu wasn’t for another two days and would cost me an additional $400. With nothing but time on my hands, I decided to check Air Asia’s contract of carriage for assistance.

cap

My confirmation email and the AirAsia website indicated that a web check-in would be available. I was able to find language in the contract of carriage indicating that AirAsia did not uphold its end of the contract by sending the incorrect check-in information. I had to wait roughly two hours to speak with a supervisor. When one did finally arrive, he did not have the authority to help me in any way. It was only after speaking with the director of all operations for AirAsia at the terminal that I was given a hotel accommodation and rebooked at no additional charge. During my wait, the entire AirAsia ticketing system crashed for a chaotic period of about 90 minutes.

Two days later I returned to the airport for my flight. Check in at KLIA2 is done according to the destination. You’ll need to find the check-in area for departures to the United States. After check-in, I proceeded to the immigration checkpoint where my cabin luggage was checked once more. If immigration discovers that your bags are overweight, you’ll be forced to return to check in—and if you’re rushing, this isn’t the ideal situation, to say the least. Be sure you follow AirAsia’s baggage specifications to the letter as they can be quite strict.

The immigration line for my flight was pretty quick — I spent five minutes total in line — but on unlucky days I’ve whiled away up to 30 minutes waiting for my turn. Allocate ample time for this procedure just in case the lines are longer than usual.

Lounge

Thanks to my Ritz-Carlton Visa I have a Priority Pass membership, which grants me access to more than 1,000 lounges around the world. On this route, I had access to a total of three, but in Kuala Lumpur I went straight to the gate, because there’s a second security check after the lounge area. Considering I’d already missed one flight due to being held in line, I decided not to risk it.

In Honolulu, there are two Priority Pass lounges. Nearest my arrival gate was the IASS lounge, which was an utter disappointment — an outdated design with few refreshments.

ca

I do not recommend this lounge at all. Even though it’s very close to the gate, there’s not much of a reason to visit. The Plumeria lounge is much farther but it’s much nicer. If you have the luxury of time, I’d recommend taking the 10-minute walk to give the lounge a look.

cap
The design is a lot more updated and modern. The food and beverage assortment is much better, with a wine bar and beers, as well as sandwiches and snacks.

Boarding

I was permitted access to the gate only after my boarding pass and passport were inspected again. The waiting area was massive, with more than enough room to accommodate all the passengers.

cap

I was pretty disappointed though to discover that there were no places to charge your electronics. You need to be fully charged and ready to go by the time you arrive at the waiting area because you won’t find a single socket or plug. In the middle of the waiting area, there were two computers with  free internet, but in this day and age, those are far less useful than charged batteries.

AirAsia employs a “hurry up and wait” boarding system. Although you’re assigned a specific boarding group, these were somehow ignored and passengers conglomerated en masse to board the plane. This resulted in quite the line at the jet bridge. I stood for about 20 minutes before reaching my seat.

capIn Osaka, the boarding process was identical to that of Kuala Lumpur: boarding groups were ignored and a long line snaked along the gate.

Cabin and Seat

AirAsia uses Airbus A330-300s on trans-Pacific flights. It’s a long-haul twinjet, but it can’t reach Honolulu nonstop, hence the fuel stop in Osaka. This one was surprisingly comfortable despite seating 377 people, a relatively high number for an A330. This one, with the Malaysian registration 9M-XXY, had been delivered new in 2015.

cap

The seats were well padded, with no sign of wear and tear, and the headrests were adjustable, which is a big plus for me. Legroom was an industry- standard 32 inches, but the way Air Asia X manages to cram in 365 coach seats is by reducing width and laying them out in 3-3-3 rows, as opposed to the 2-4-2 found on most A330s with full-service carriers.  The other 12 seats are in the Premium section in 2-2-2 layout.

The cream-and-red interior was pretty, although the rest of the plane’s design isn’t really anything to write home about. Luckily I had an entire row to myself between KUL and KIX.

cap

As mentioned, AirAsia is rather restrictive on what you can carry on board and as a result, the overhead compartments tend to be empty.

cap
Though you can adjust the light controls on the console, you can’t fix the air vents—so you will always be either too hot or too cold. I’d recommend bringing a jacket so you have some control over your body temperature.

cap

During the first leg of my flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Osaka (KIX) the plane was relatively empty. The second leg however was almost completely full making for a cramped, uncomfortable 7-hour flight.

cap

Amenities and Entertainment

There is no in-flight entertainment on Air Asia X, so you have to bring your own screens. The seat pocket houses a few brochures, and there’s not even a screen for in-flight movies like in the old days. You can rent a tablet for the duration of the flight at RM60 ($12.44 USD), with a few movies and some music. I came prepared with fully charged devices (plus backup power banks, because power is available only in Premium) and an external hard drive filled with entertainment. I watched two movies, slept comfortably across three seats, and before I knew it I arrived in Japan.

cap

Food and Drink

You’re not allowed to bring in outside food or drinks, which I found odd because there aren’t very many carriers that discourage this. I strongly suggest you take the prepaid food option, but that’s only because you’ll pay more later, not because the food is any good. I ordered the Nasi Lemak and the Nasi Dagang. The food was dry and salty, and the texture and consistency were appalling.

cap
You get a tiny bottle of water with your meal, but that’s about it—no cookie, no snacks, nothing. Better than nothing, but that’s all one can say.cap

As for the Osaka to Honolulu leg, either purchase meals during booking or risk paying $16 while on board the flight. The food is different, but just as bad. Finally, AirAsia does not offer alcoholic beverages for purchase.

Overall Impression

AirAsia does a good job of offering a functional product at an incredibly low price. For shorter routes within Asia where comfort is not as important, this seems to work well. As the carrier expands to longer international routes I’d like to see AirAsia put more of an effort into customer comfort and service. No access to quality food and entertainment isn’t a big issue on flights under four hours, but when you are in the sky for 14 hours, even a minimalist traveler like myself is bound to go stir-crazy. In terms of customer service, the staff’s sometimes shaky English and haphazard company procedures won’t necessarily be a problem until you have a major issue, like I did.

However, with the only US destination being Hawaii, you’d be forced to book another flight to get on the US mainland. Considering that, Air Asia X may only be marginally cheaper than legacy airlines — until it eventually lands in the continental US.

How To Use a Bullet Journal to Meal Plan and Track Your Food Budget, According to the Creator — Budget Bullet Journals

by Ayn-Monique Klahre

Have you heard of bullet journaling? I hadn't until recently, but it's a methodology I can get on board with. It's a practice that's half about productivity and half about mindfulness, getting yourself organized so you can do more of what you want to do and less of the stuff that doesn't matter. For this story, I got to speak with Ryder Carroll, the man responsible for creating this phenomenon. He evolved this system little by little to get his own life under control, and found that others wanted to adopt it, too.

Pembuat roti di Perancis mahu baguette dilindungi Unesco

by FMT Reporters

baguette-france

“Ia menjadi makanan dicemburui seluruh dunia.

5 Make-Ahead Salad Toppings That Keep You Full — Tips from The Kitchn

by Kelli Foster

After so many failed attempts, I've finally succeeded at meal planning. The tricky part hasn't been sticking to it (that's going quite well), but rather planning for lunch. Usually lunch is a salad, but it has to be one I really want to eat (read: one I won't ditch for whatever the office decides to order).

Eventually I learned the secret to a salad I'd actually stick with is a topping that's hearty enough to make a salad feel like a meal, and one I can make a big batch of ahead of time. Here are five toppings that do just that.

What's the Difference Between Meal Planning and Meal Prep? — Meal Plan Club

by Kelli Foster
Jim Paull

You shouldn't be able to see the back of the fridge. Everyone knows that.

Meal planning and meal prep are regular parts of my weekend routine. They're the steps that make getting weeknight dinners on the table easier, and even help me spend less at the grocery store. These two steps are talked about a lot, often together, and for good reason — they really go hand-in-hand. But there is an important point that sets them apart.

Cat investment scam exposed, RM1.5 mil losses reported

by Bernama

Cat-investment-scam-exposedSHAH ALAM: Police arrested the owner and manager of a pet retailing business in Section 14 here today for their alleged involvement in a feline investment scam in three states, involving losses of RM1.56 million.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation principal assistant director SAC S Sasikala Devi said the two men, aged 55 and 34, were at the premises during the raid, and they were arrested following police reports by 35 victims.

She said the two men were also believed to be responsible for disseminating information on the cat investment scheme since last year.

According to Sasikala, the scam deceived victims into “purchasing” imported cat breeds to be reared at the shop, promising returns of up to 70% from the subsequent sale of the offspring.

“Victims are duped into ‘purchasing’ imported breeds of cats, among them the ‘Maine Coon’, ‘British Shorthair’ and ‘Pedigree’.

“The prices ranged from RM7,000 to RM30,000, for mating with other types of cats at the premises.

“However, after a year, the victims did not receive the lucrative proceeds from the sales of the cats as promised. This prompted them to lodge a police report,” she told reporters here today.

Sasikala said two other branches of the company in Johor Bahru and Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, were also raided today, but the premises in Kuala Lumpur was found to have closed down two months ago.

“From the raid at the two premises (in Shah Alam and Johor Bahru), police seized various related documents, including reference certificates of the cat breeds.

“Microchips containing information regarding the cats involved were affixed to each animal.

“Police believe there are many more cat owners who have been deceived through this scheme.

“The victims are advised to come forward to assist in investigating the fraud case because it is understood there are several other branches of the pet shop.

“So far, only victims from the three premises have lodged reports,” Sasikala said.

How to Get Ready for School Quickly

Waking up early every day for school is hard! If you hit the snooze button on your alarm a few too many times, you may find yourself having to rush to make it to class. In the process, you might leave books behind, forget your lunch, and end up looking like you just rolled out of bed -- literally! Preparing a few things the night before and streamlining your morning routine can help prevent frantic mornings. You can get ready quickly and still arrive at school fresh, prepared, and feeling your best.

EditSteps

EditPreparing the Night Before

  1. Make and pack your lunch at night. Start making your school lunch a little bit after you finish dinner. Once it's packed, put your lunch bag in the fridge overnight to keep it fresh - you don't want moldy food in the morning. The next morning, grab it and put it in your backpack right before you head out the door.[1]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • If you tend to forget your lunch, you may want to put a reminder sticky note in your bedroom, or somewhere you go often (reasonably not like in the garden)
    • If you usually buy your lunch, make sure you have enough lunch money, then pack it away in your bag.
  2. Pack your backpack before you go to bed. When you finish your homework, put everything back in your bag so it’s ready for the next day and you don't forget it. Make sure you put anything else you’ll need, like permission slips, special projects, pencil case, into the bag.[2]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Put your backpack by your bedroom door or near your front door before you go to sleep. That way, you can grab it as you walk out.
[3]

  1. Choose and lay out your entire outfit before you go to sleep. Looking for an outfit in the morning can seriously slow you down. Pick yours out the night before instead. Don’t forget to lay out socks, shoes, underwear, jewelry, and makeup (if you wear it). Be sure to wash and iron your clothes before you lay them out.
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • If you have a school uniform, you can easily lay it out the night before and throw it on the following morning.
  2. Take a shower at night instead of in the morning. Taking a shower at night can save you lots of time in the morning. Not everybody likes to shower at night, though, and you may need that invigorating morning shower to start your day. However, give it a try a few times. If you can get used to it, you’ll be able to sleep for an extra 15 to 30 minutes![4]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 5 Version 2.jpg

EditCreating a Bedtime Routine

  1. Choose a bedtime and stick to it every night. Be consistent about what time you wake in the morning, too. Your body likes routines, and the quality of your sleep will be better if you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Aim to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep on school nights.
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Set a reminder on your smartphone that alerts you when it's 20 minutes before your bedtime. That gives you enough time to wash up, brush your teeth, and get into your pajamas before it's time to hit the sack.
  2. Set your alarm clock before you go to sleep. Try to give yourself at least 45 minutes to get ready in the morning before you have to head out the door. If you think you can get ready faster, go for it! It really just depends on what you have to do in the morning to get ready.
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 7 Version 2.jpg
  3. Try putting your alarm on the other side of the room if you hit snooze a lot. That way, you have to get up and walk across the room every time it goes off. You can also try setting an alarm on your smartphone to go off about 10 minutes after your first alarm clock. That way, if you snooze through the first alarm, you'll have backup.[5]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 8 Version 2.jpg
  4. Stop keeping your phone near your bed. When your phone is nearby, it's hard not to pick it up and check your social media. The light from your phone can disrupt your sleep schedule and make it more difficult to wake up. Put your phone out of reach.
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • It’s okay to check your phone before you go to bed, but don’t get in bed with it or sleep with it.Most people start to text people and immediately start a full on conversation with them which takes hours which delays your bedtime[6]
    • If you routinely can’t wake up in the morning, try turning off your phone, computer, and video games an hour before bedtime. You’ll feel sleepier faster.

EditGoing through Your Morning Routine

  1. Wash your face. Splashing some cold water on your face first thing in the morning may seem horrible, but is very refreshing once you get used to it. Gently clean your face with a warm washcloth and some face wash.[7]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 10 Version 2.jpg
  2. Brush your teeth and use toiletries in the same order every day. Try to do your morning routine in the same order every day -- the more you practice, the easier and faster it will go. Try brushing your teeth, putting on deodorant, and checking your hair and face in the same order.[8]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 11 Version 2.jpg
  3. Put your clothes on as soon as possible. Lots of people like to putter around in their pajamas in the morning, but if you have somewhere to be, this wastes time! Get into the habit of getting dressed as soon as you get out of the bed or shower.[9]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 12.jpg
  4. Choose simple hairstyles. Brush your hair and style it simply, so you don’t spend a lot of time on your hair. Ponytails, messy buns, and loose hair are all great, simple looks.[10]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 13.jpg
  5. Streamline your makeup time. There are several ways to minimize your makeup time. You can wear less makeup, try basic looks, or save easy stuff like lip gloss or concealer for the ride to school. If you love getting dolled up for school, try laying out your makeup the night before in the same order you’re going to use it.[11]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 14.jpg
  6. Take advantage of waiting times. If you have to wait for a sibling to get out of the bathroom or for a hair straightener to heat up, use that time to get ready in other areas. For example, if you can’t shower until your sister gets out of the bathroom, eat breakfast or double-check your backpack while you wait.[12]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 15.jpg
  7. Drink a small amount of coffee or tea (optional). Overloading on caffeine won’t make up for a lack of sleep, but a regular serving size of coffee or tea will help you feel a little more alert when you start your day. Don’t drink more than 1 cup or add a ton of sugar to it -- you’ll crash before lunchtime.[13]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 16.jpg
  8. Eat a quick but substantial breakfast. Never, ever skip breakfast, even when you’re running late. You’ll be miserable and hungry until lunchtime. If you’re worried about running out of time, put a banana or granola bar in your backpack as soon as you get up.[14]
Get Ready for School Quickly Step 17.jpg
  9. Check your backpack before you leave. Packing your backpack the night before when you’re more relaxed will help you leave more quickly, but it’s a good idea to give your bag a quick final check right before you leave. If everything’s in there, head to school![15]

EditTips

  • Avoid electronics when you're trying to get ready for the day, as they will distract you and take up your time.
  • You may want to make a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for school.
  • If you have glasses, clean them the night before so they will be ready for the next day.
  • Get some pumping, sing-a-long music going when you wake up!
  • If you tend to take forever in the shower make a Playlist with the first 3 or so songs that are ones you like. Then make the rest of the songs ones you hate so you will hurry up and get out of the shower so you can turn the music off.
