These Honey Garlic Baked Cauliflower Bites Are Irresistible — Delicious Links

by Lauren Masur

Kitchn's Delicious Links column highlights recipes we're excited about from the bloggers we love. Follow along every weekday as we post our favorites.

Last weekend I consumed one of the top five appetizers I've ever eaten in my life at a semi-unexpected location: the spicy buffalo cauliflower at California Pizza Kitchen. The moment I popped the first floret into my mouth, an imaginary symphony began to play, and I needed to seriously slow my roll since we ordered the dish to share for the table.

These little caulis were filled with flavor, thanks to the Sriracha Buffalo sauce, blue cheese crumbles, and chopped scallion garnish. In search of a similar but different rendition, I came across these honey garlic baked cauliflower bites from Kirbie's Cravings and immediately knew I needed to add them to my menu this week.

6 Easy Exercises You Can Do in a Hotel Pool

by Michael Y. Park

Let’s be honest here: How many of us really make regular use of a hotel gym? Save for the that one guy who barks into his phone while lazily pumping the StairMaster in his wingtips, of course.

At many hotels, those factory-new Nautilus machines, dustless treadmills and virgin free weights sit as untouched and unloved as the pay-per-view button on the TV remote.

But the swimming pool, on the other hand, remains one of America’s favorite hotel amenities. And if you happen to be staying at a hotel with a pool, you don’t even need to hit the gym, since you can combine water-based fun with enough exercise to assuage any guilt about the extra dessert you had at dinner.

We spoke to Maik Wiedenbach, an alternate for the German swim team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and now a celebrity fitness trainer in Manhattan, about how to keep fit using a hotel pool.

But first, a couple of important tips.

Learn to share

Hotel pools tend not to be Olympic-sized, so the best you can usually hope for is 12 to 15 yards. Plus, there may be way more traffic than at a pool used exclusively for athletic practice — most of it involving people who don’t know common pool etiquette or even what slow and fast lanes are.

So be patient and be prepared: you may have to be flexible with your workout, breaking drills into shorter segments as needed.

“You’ll have to deal with people who shouldn’t be there, but there’s no point in getting upset,” Wiedenbach told The Points Guy.

Get the right gear

Wiedenbach doesn’t care whether you wear Speedos or board shorts, as long as you wear goggles. But not necessarily the super-expensive fancy kind.

“Please invest in proper goggles, like what Michael Phelps is wearing when he competes,” Wiedenbach said. “No rubber, just plastic over the eyes. Don’t worry, they don’t fall off.”

Learn the cup and ladder

“The best thing I ever learned was taught to me by my East German coach,” Wiedenbach said.

“Imagine that there’s a ladder in the pool and you’re grabbing the steps of the ladder, pushing your hands onto those rungs. Most people focus on pushing their hand and body really fast, but what you want to do is pull yourself forward on that ladder. The goal is not to do as many strokes as you can, but [fewer] strokes and really get the most out of them.”

He recommended that casual swimmers create a “tiny bit of a cup” with their hands as they swim.

Now, on to the exercises.

1. Take it to the edge

Hold onto the edge of the pool with both hands and go face down in the water. Stick your legs straight out and kick as hard as you can for 20 seconds, breathing to the side every five seconds. Do this four or five times.

This works your quadriceps, abdominal muscles and hamstrings.

2. Jump up

Stand in the shallow end of the pool. Using your feet and toes, jump up out of the water (for men, your swim trunks should just break the surface). As you jump, squeeze your triceps and try to use your hands as if you’re pushing yourself out of the water for a second before you come back in.

“Think of it like a mini push-up using your arms,” Wiedenbach said.

This will work your shoulders, butt, quads and abs.

3. Take sides

Go back to the edge of the pool in the same position as in the first exercise (arms on the edge, feet out in the water). Start kicking as before, but this time let go with the left arm while still clinging to the edge with the right. Do five strokes with your left arm. Now switch arms and do five strokes with your right arm. Repeat.

This will work several parts of your body, including your quadriceps, abdominal muscles and hamstrings.

4. Freestyle

Find the longest stretch of clear water. From one end of the pool, push off as hard as you can. Do four to five freestyle laps: Each arm alternates position: one pushing, slightly-cupped palm down, into the water as the other recovers position from above the water.

Meanwhile, the legs flutter kick straight forward. Breathe by turning (not lifting) your head to the same side as you’re lifting your arm on every other stroke. Try to do as few arm strokes per lap as you can.

“This sets you up for a feeling for the water and lets you swim longer and perform better and learn to glide,” Wiedenbach said.

5. Glide

Building on the previous exercise, push off the edge with your feet and freestyle again, but counting to two between arm strokes and gliding between them.

This works on your breathing technique, and is an excellent overall aerobic exercise.

6. Work your lungs

For your final two laps, begin a freestyle as before, but this time do each lap while taking only two breaths per lap. After you finish both laps, take a break of 20 to 30 seconds, and then do it again.

This exercise helps you increase your lung capacity.

Malaysia may seek DoJ’s help to recover US$600 mil from Goldman Sachs

by Reuters
Jim Paull

Ooooo real money rm24 towards the RM 10,000 debt.

Goldman Sachs earned almost US$600 million for the three bond sales it executed for 1MDB. (Reuters pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is considering asking the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to get Goldman Sachs to return nearly US$600 million in fees it earned from bonds raised for 1MDB, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Malaysian authorities want to ask the DoJ, which is pursuing a corruption and money laundering probe at 1MDB, a state fund, to get Goldman to disgorge profits it made from the sale, after which Malaysia would claim the money, both sources said.

No formal request has been made to the DoJ, but top officials are actively discussing the plan within the government, the sources added.

“There have been no official requests yet, but this is being discussed,” said a Malaysian government source.

A financial industry source in Malaysia, who is aware of the discussions, said back-channel talks between the government and the DoJ were underway.

How Kuala Lumpur would go about claiming the funds, and the legal hurdles in the process were not immediately made clear by the sources.

A spokeswoman for Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the minister had no comment on the matter

A spokesman for Goldman Sachs declined to comment and the DoJ was not available outside US business hours.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A third source familiar with the matter has said Malaysia is also preparing an arrest warrant for Roger Ng, a former Goldman banker.

Goldman raised nearly US$6.5 billion in three bond sales between 2012 and 2013 for 1MDB, a state fund founded by ex-prime minister Najib Razak, who was ousted in a general election last month.

The US bank earned almost US$600 million for the three deals – an amount critics say is far in excess of the normal 1% to 2% fees a bank could expect for helping sell bonds.

More than US$2.5 billion raised from those bonds was misappropriated by high-level 1MDB officials, their relatives and associates, according to DoJ civil lawsuits filed in a US court in 2016.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing, but has been questioned by government investigators after the election. He and his wife have been barred from leaving the country.

Goldman has always maintained that it did nothing wrong and that it had no visibility into whether some of the funds raised may have been subsequently diverted to other purposes.

Malaysia’s newly elected government led by 92-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has vowed to bring back the billions allegedly lost through 1MDB, and prosecute the culprits.

A special task force set up after the election to look into 1MDB met officials from the DoJ and the US FBI to discuss the probe in late May, including the process of returning the funds to Malaysia.

Belgians Are so Serious About Fries and Mayo, They Want UNESCO Recognition

by Alyssa Cerchiai
Jim Paull

Sign me up. Sedap.

Belgium is on a mission to be featured on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list for their beloved fries and mayonnaise combo. Since Belgian mayonnaise producer, Natura, ignited a petition for the dish to be added, it has since reached 600 signatures.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list is currently comprised of 470 items that span the spectrum of traditional practices. Although Belgium is already recognized on the list for “shrimp fishing on horseback in Oostduinkerke” among other things, the country is adamant that their fries and mayo, typically served in a cone, are a vital aspect of cultural heritage in the region.

One petition signer, Fred Kot, commented “fry without mayo is like a couple without cuddling.” Another, Nath Tura, was more aggressive, ordering “do not send fries without mayo to UNESCO!”

If you want to see what the hype is all about, you can buy yourself a cone of the delicacy almost anywhere in Belgium. The stands they’re sold in are so common that they’d be difficult to miss. And hey, if you like it enough, feel free to sign the petition yourself!

Ahhhhh, that's what they're for.

KUALA LUMPUR: A man seated on a motorcycle with his wife and son threw his son away in his bid to escape an approaching police team in Kampung Fajar, Ulu Klang, near here.

In the 10.15pm incident on Sunday, the family and some others had gathered at a field there when a team of policemen on patrol duty approached them.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Hamzah Alias said the man tried to flee the scene but failed to do so when the motorcycle fell to the ground.

“The suspect, who panicked, flung his son away and tried to flee but he was apprehended by police.

“His wife and the other friends escaped,” he said at the Taman Melawati police station here today.

Hamzah said the boy, who sustained injuries and bruises on his back, was taken to the Ampang Hospital.

He said initial investigations revealed that the man, who tested positive for drugs, was using a stolen motorcycle and had a criminal record for drug-related offences.

“We are closing in on the suspect’s wife, aged 27, to facilitate investigations,” said Hamzah.

Netizens want action over Bangsar eatery washing plates over pothole

by Predeep Nambiar
Jim Paull

Mmmmm extra flavor.

The restaurant workers washing plates under unhygienic conditions in a back alley filled with potholes.

PETALING JAYA: A video showing restaurant workers washing plates next to a pothole filled with kitchen waste at a back lane in Bangsar has gone viral on social media, earning ire from netizens.

The 29-second video showed workers with hair nets squatting over the pothole filled with water running from a garden hose at the affluent business district.

The workers took turns to clear leftovers, scrubbed the metal plates and later ran the garden hose over the pothole, before flinging the plates to a counter above.

The restaurant operator later issued an apology on Facebook claiming the workers were newly-hired and promised to ensure the incident would not happen again.

The operators offered free dinner for all patrons on Thursday for the breaking of fast session from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Netizens scoffed at the offer, saying they would not want to eat there any more even if it was free.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Health and Environment Department director Noor Akma Shabudin said an investigation will be carried out tomorrow (Wednesday).

She said if the operators were found to have violated health and safety guidelines, it will be ordered to be shut for three days.

“In these three days, they will be ordered to have a clean-up and we will only allow them to reopen if we are satisfied that the hygiene standards are met,” she told FMT when contacted.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz also told FMT the outlet will be “likely shut off”.

How to Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet

Jim Paull

Halal or not?

Potbellied pigs are intelligent, clean, and affectionate animals. Because of their delightful, quirky personalities, potbellied pigs make great pets. If you're willing to commit to the time and effort it takes, you can bring a potbellied pig into your home as your new pet.

EditSteps

EditFinding a Potbellied Pig

  1. Check if your city allows potbellied pigs as pets before you get one. Every city has different zoning codes, and some don’t allow farm animals to be kept as pets. Before you adopt a potbellied pig, you’ll want to make sure it’s legal in your area.[1]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Visit your city government's website to find out the laws regarding potbellied pigs in your area.
  2. Adopt a potbellied pig from a reputable breeder or rescue. Adopting through a reputable breeder or rescue is the best way to ensure you get a potbellied pig that’s healthy and socialized. You can find a breeder or rescue by searching online for one in your area.[2]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • You can also find reputable potbellied pig breeders by visiting http://americanminipigassociation.com/.
    • Read online reviews of breeders and rescues before you adopt through them to see if they’re reputable.
  3. Inspect a breeder's or rescue's facility before you adopt from them. Touring the facility of a breeder or rescue is a good way to determine whether or not they're reputable. If the pigs appear to be living in a crowded, chaotic space, it could be a sign that the breeder isn't responsible.[3]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • You should also pay attention to how clean the facility is. A reputable breeder or rescue will have a clean facility that is neat and organized. If it's dirty and disorganized, it could mean that the pigs there aren't being raised in a safe, healthy environment.
  4. Ask to see a piglet's parents before you adopt it. A piglet's parents can reveal a lot about the piglet you're considering adopting, like how big it will grow up to be and what its temperament will be like.[4]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • A reputable breeder should have no problem with showing you a piglet's parents.
    • If you're adopting from a rescue, you may not be able to meet a piglet's parents. However, the rescue should still have plenty of information to give you about where their piglets came from.
  5. Avoid adopting a potbellied pig that’s younger than 6 weeks old. Piglets that are taken away from their mothers before 6 weeks of age can develop behavioral and health problems down the road. You'll want to make sure the pig you're adopting is at least 6 weeks old.[5]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • If a breeder or rescue is adopting out piglets that are younger than 6 weeks old, it's a sign that they’re not a reputable or responsible organization.

EditPig-Proofing Your Home

  1. Move dangerous household products somewhere your pig can’t reach them. Cleaning products, medicines, cosmetics, toiletries, and other common household products aren’t safe for potbellied pigs. Since pigs are naturally curious animals, you’ll want to keep these items up high so your pig doesn’t get into them.[6]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Avoid leaving dangerous household products on low surfaces, like coffee tables, nightstands, and the floor.
    • Potbellied pigs can grow to be tall, so make sure you're putting dangerous household products up high enough so your pig can't reach them.[7]
  2. Find new spots for any household plants that are on low surfaces. There are a variety of household plants that are toxic to potbellied pigs. Even if your plants aren’t toxic, you’ll still want to move them so your pig doesn’t chew on them or knock them over.[8]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Keep your plants on high surfaces, like countertops, your dining room table, or high up on a bookshelf.
  3. Secure low, food-filled cabinets with childproof locks. Potbellied pigs are intelligent animals, and they can be sneaky when it comes to getting food. To prevent your pig from getting into your cabinets and eating your food when you’re not around, keep them shut using childproof locks.[9]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Depending on how determined your pig is to find food, you may need to attach a childproof lock to your refrigerator as well.
    • Since potbellied pigs can grow to be tall, you'll want to secure any cabinets that are below that height.[10]
  4. Prepare a comfortable indoor spot for your potbellied pig to sleep. If you don’t want your new potbellied pig to sleep in bed with you, you’ll need to make it a bed of its own. You can use a dog bed or soft pillows and blankets to make your pig’s sleeping area with. Just make sure your pig will be comfortable.[11]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • You can also set up your pig’s bed in a large dog crate. Make sure the crate is big enough for your pig to stand up and move around in.
  5. Set up an outdoor shelter for your pig if it will be outside a lot. Potbellied pigs love to run around outside, but they’ll need somewhere to rest and get some shade. If you’re going to be keeping your pig outside for long periods of time, set up a dog house or other shaded shelter for your pig to hang out in when it’s tired.[12]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Fill the shelter with blankets or straw so your pig is comfortable.
    • Make sure the shelter will protect your pig from wind and rain.

EditFeeding Your Pig

  1. Feed your pig a balanced, pellet-based diet. It’s important that your potbellied pig gets all the nutrients it needs so it grows to be strong and healthy. Use pellets that are specifically made for potbellied pigs to ensure your pig is getting everything it needs.[13]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • The breeder or rescue you adopted your pig from should give you dietary recommendations.
    • You can also talk to your vet about what the best diet for your potbellied pig is.
  2. Feed your pig of food per day if it’s under 3 months old. When your pig is still a young piglet, you’ll want to give it about of pellet food each day. You may need to adjust how much food you’re giving your pig if you notice it’s too skinny or too heavy.[14]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 12 Version 2.jpg
  3. Give your pig of food per day if it’s older than 3 months. Once your pig is 3 months old, you can start feeding it larger portions of pellet food. Gradually increase the amount of food you’re giving your pig from to so it has time to adjust.[15]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 13 Version 3.jpg
    • Split up your pig’s daily serving of food so you’re feeding it once in the morning and once in the evening.
  4. Supplement your pig’s diet with vegetables. While pellets designed specifically for potbellied pigs should make up the bulk of your pig's diet, you can also give your pig a salad-size portion of vegetables every day. Some good vegetables you can give to your pig are:[16]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 14 Version 2.jpg
    • Leafy greens
    • Carrots
    • Cucumbers
  5. Avoid feeding your pig processed or high-sugar foods. Potbellied pigs don’t do well when their diet is filled with lots of sodium and sugar. Stick with pellets and vegetables when feeding your pig so its diet is balanced and healthy.[17]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 15 Version 2.jpg
    • It’s OK to occasionally give your pig fruit, but keep it to a minimum since fruit tends to be high in sugar.
  6. Give your pig less food if it starts to gain a lot of weight. Obesity is a major health concern for potbellied pigs. Obesity can lead to other health issues, like respiratory problems and arthritis. If you notice your pig gaining a lot of weight, adjust its diet as needed.[18]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 16 Version 2.jpg
    • The average healthy weight for potbellied pigs is . However, some potbellied pigs can weigh up to and not be considered obese, depending on their size.[19]
    • If you think your pig might be obese but you’re not sure, take it to the vet for an expert opinion. Your vet will also be able to give you specific dietary recommendations to help your pig lose weight.

EditCaring for Your Pig

  1. Give your pig a bath whenever it’s dirty. Contrary to popular belief, potbellied pigs are naturally clean animals, and it’s not necessary to bathe them regularly. However, if your pig gets dirty playing outside, you can rinse it off inside a large shower or in a swimming pool outside.[20]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 17 Version 2.jpg
    • Avoid bathing your pig more than necessary. Excessive bathing can dry out your pig’s skin and cause irritation.
  2. Take your pig to the vet to have its hooves trimmed twice a year. Potbellied pigs’ hooves grow quickly, and they need to be routinely trimmed so they don’t get too long. Your vet will be able to trim your pig’s hooves so they’re a healthy, comfortable length.[21]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 18 Version 2.jpg
  3. Let your pig go outside every day. Potbellied pigs can live indoors, but they need daily outdoor exercise. Pigs like to sunbathe, run around, and root outside, so it’s important that you give your pig time do this every day.[22]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 19 Version 2.jpg
    • If you have a fenced in yard, let your pig go outside for a couple of hours every day. Make sure the fence is secure so your pig isn’t able to escape.
    • If you don’t have a yard, take your pig for long walks using a leash and harness.
  4. Give your pig plenty of attention every day. Potbellied pigs are intelligent animals that get bored and frustrated easily. To prevent this, make sure you’re spending time with your pig every day. If your pig seems irritated or depressed, it could be a sign that it’s not getting enough attention.[23]
Have a Potbellied Pig for a Pet Step 20 Version 2.jpg
    • Make it a point to give your pig a nice, long belly rub every day.
    • Spend time each day training your pig and rewarding it with treats.
    • Take your pig for walks or sit in your yard with it when it’s playing outside.

EditTips

  • Take your potbellied pig to the vet as soon as possible after you adopt it to get it vaccinated.

EditWarnings

  • Always monitor your pig when it’s around dogs. Dogs can be aggressive toward pigs.[24]

Stop ‘Islamist thuggery’ Siti Kassim urges Muslim MPs, Ministers

by FMT Reporters

Siti Kassim has criticised Muslim MPs and ministers for being silent about the actions of a group in Manjoi. (Facebook pic)

PETALING JAYA: Activist lawyer Siti Kassim has urged all Malaysians to speak out against “ISIS behaviour” and the “Islamist thuggery” of a group of young Muslims who forced an all-night shop in Perak to empty out a liquor cabinet. She criticised Muslims MPs and ministers for remaining silent.

“This kind of Islamist extremism needs to be halted and nipped at the bud before it becomes a plague, a cancer throughout Malaysian society,” she said in an online posting today.

“I am disappointed that we have not heard a single word against it from our elected Muslim representatives or Muslim Ministers especially. what are they scared of or waiting for? Or do they agree with this behaviour?” she said.

The young Muslims in Perak, from a group known as Jabat, had posted a video showing the group in action in a shop in Manjoi, and the shop worker emptying the cabinet.

Siti Kassim said their action was “the result of more than two decades of Islamist influence in our education system and civil administration”.

She urged all right-thinking Malaysians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to speak out against such “Islamist thuggery” and asked the government to act decisively against it.

The group had lodged a police report, declaring their success in campaigning against the sale of alcoholic drinks.

One young man was shown saying that, “as long as there are alcoholic drinks in the shop, then we can’t buy something else, can we?”

In another video, the group was shown at Manjoi police station after lodging a report, saying they intended to prevent the sale of alcoholic drinks throughout Manjoi, where most of the population is Muslim and Malay.

The Great British Bake Off Is Secretly a Show About Time Management — Food TV

by Claire Margine

I'm a sucker for time management systems. I've bullet journaled, read Getting Things Done, embraced everything from Trello to Omnifocus to elaborate webs of post-it notes. Without a ton of structure, my time gets slippery and hazy. Unless I focus, it seems to just disappear.

Mary Berry Shocks the World by Being Totally Wrong About Pies — Pop Culture

by Elizabeth Licata
Jim Paull

She can always use the dementia card.

I can't believe it, but Mary Berry — queen of British baking, author of more than 70 cookbooks — is utterly and completely wrong about pies.

On the last episode of Britain's Best Home Cook, Mary Berry stunned the world and her fellow judges by asserting that pies should just have pastry lids and not be totally enclosed in pastry.

This 80-Mile “Doughnut Trail” is Worth the Hike

by Jane Frye
Jim Paull

Mmmm

If your idea of vacation is more Boston cream than Boston proper, there’s an 80-mile “doughnut trail” near Cincinnati, Ohio, worthy of your next getaway.

Called the Butler County Donut Trail, sugar fiends can download an official map that will lead you around a dozen various doughnut shops all within driving distance of each another. Think of it like a pub crawl, except you’re likely to end up with a sugar buzz instead of a beer buzz.

The pastry-packed region boasts “one of the largest numbers of donut shops per capita in the Midwest,” and so far, “more than 9,000 people from 44 states and nine countries have completed” the trail, reports Food & Wine. From maple bacon doughnuts at Holtman’s to traditional glazed at Milton’s to cheesecake doughnuts at The Donut Spot, there’s something for anyone with a sweet tooth.

If doughnuts for days aren’t enough of a reason to get your glaze on, download the accompanying passport and hit 11 of the 12 stops on the list and you’ll get a commemorative t-shirt, which also gets you a handful of discounts at additional participating Butler County businesses.

For you out of towners, there’s a newly-refurbished hotel right in the heart of the action. Even better, it costs just 15,000 Marriott Rewards points per night — or just 5,000 Starpoints transferred to Marriott Rewards at a 3:1 ratio. If you need to stock up on your Marriott points, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card is currently offering a 100,000-point sign-up bonus. That’s more than six nights at this hotel for you to recover from your sugar crash.

Pro tip: The baked goods featured at many of these shops can sell out fast, so get an early start — and come hungry.

C4: Lift ban on French lawyer probing Scorpene scandal

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

It's all coming back.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) today called on the new Pakatan Harapan government to lift the ban prohibiting French lawyer William Bourdon, who is investigating the Scorpene scandal, from entering Malaysia.

The case involves alleged kickbacks from the 2002 sale of two Scorpene submarines to Malaysia by French defence and electronics giant Thales and naval shipbuilding operator DCNS.

A former aide of Najib Razak, Abdul Razak Baginda, had been indicted by a French court on July 18, 2017, in connection with the Scorpene corruption scandal.

Najib was defence minister when the US$1.1-billion deal for two Scorpene-class submarines was sealed between France and Malaysia.

The scandal centres on the payment of €114 million (RM570 million) in commissions and kickbacks made by Thales and DCNS to Malaysian officials through a company called Perimekar Sdn Bhd (Perimekar) – a company controlled by Abdul Razak Baginda.

Five individuals, including Abdul Razak Baginda, have been indicted by the French court for their involvement in the scandal.

C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel said Bourdon was arbitrarily deported from Malaysia in July 2011 by the then Barisan Nasional government for giving a briefing on the development of the case in the French court at a fundraising event.

Bourdon is a prominent French lawyer who is in charge of the Scorpene case in the French court. He and his team of lawyers specialise in human rights and corporate social responsibility and have been providing pro bono legal advice and services in relation to the case.

Gabriel said: “It is noteworthy that the case is still ongoing in the French court and it is only a matter of time that the proceeding is moved to a higher court where those involved will be prosecuted.

“Given the strong commitment made by the Pakatan Harapan government to stamp out corruption, we urge that the ban placed on William Bourdon be immediately lifted.”

She said this would enable him to enter Malaysia and advise the government on the latest development in the case, the next course of action, and steps to be taken to ensure that the case proceeded without a hitch in the French court.

The lifting of the ban, she added, would also enable Malaysians to get the full picture of the scandal.

“This is key to unveiling the whole truth behind the corruption scandal which would facilitate the quest to bring those responsible to account,” added Gabriel.
