China’s Air Force pilots visit NATO airbase
According to the official webppage of Krzesiny AB, the 31. Tactical Air Base near Poznan, Poland was visited by over 50 officials, including high officers of Chinese Air Force, as part of a study tour of Europe organized by the Command of People’s Republic of China Air Force.
Among the visitors there were commanders of squadrons, pilots of combat units and students of aviation schools.
The main aim of the Chinese visit was to get acquainted with the equipment used by the most modern F-16 base in the Central-Eastern Europe. The visitors were welcomed by Brigadier General Włodzimierz Usarek – the commander of the 2. Tactcal Aviation Wing, and Colonel Jacek Pszczoła – the commander of the 31. AB.
The guests were additionaly accompanied by the deputy chief of the Polish Air Force HQ, Brigadier General Krzysztof Żabicki and Colonel Piotr Cieślik, who is the chief for international relations in the Polish Air Force.

The guests got acquainted with the profile of the unit and the planes that were formerly used in the unit. Later on they went on to see a part of the most modern set of F-16s in Europe (Block 52+ airplanes).
Next they saw how the airfield fire service works and they were guided around the base.
The Chinese delegation had no opportunity to see all of the F-16 stationed normally in Krzesiny, as part of them is currently stationed in Łask AB. 25 F-16s and personnel needed to mantain the aircraft are stationed there due to the additional training that takes place in cooperation with the Nellis detatchment.
During the period of the training the runway in Krzesiny is to undergo routine maitenance.
It is quite interesting to see a visit of officials from a country that is considered as an adversary by NATO in one of the most modern bases in the Central-Eastern Europe.

Crock Pot Bourbon Chicken Sammies with Crunchy Apple Slaw
I’m feeling quite refreshed in the culinary department after our trip to KCMO (which I’m now realizing is how all the cool kids refer to Kansas City, Missouri!)
Sometimes when you do the same thing day in and day out – no matter the field – a once free-flowing faucet of fresh ideas can occasionally slow to a mere trickle. That being said, the menus at the eclectic restaurants Ben and I visited last weekend provided me with tons of foodie inspiration, and left me brimming with new and creative recipes ideas.
Take these Crock Pot Bourbon Chicken Sammies with Crunchy Apple Slaw, inspired by a menu item at The Westside Local, for instance. I was this close to ordering ‘em for dinner when I decided it would be more fun to recreate them at home. So I did. And I’m dying over them!!
Chicken breasts are slow cooked in a homemade bourbon-BBQ sauce then shredded and topped with smoky gouda cheese, and tart, Crunchy Apple Slaw. These sandwiches are seriously insane. Mouthwatering. Mind blowing. And made right in the crock pot!
Crock pot recipes seem to slow down in the warmer months, but this is actually the best time of year to bust your crock put out as they don’t heat up the house like cooking with the oven or stove. When they’re used to create a summery dish like this, dripping with smoked gouda cheese (!) all the better. I am in love with these tart & tangy topped, smokey bourbon chicken sandwiches.
Start by getting the homemade bourbon-BBQ sauce ready, which cooks the chicken to tender, saucy perfection. This may look like a TON of ingredients, which it kind of is, I guess, but I had every single one of ‘em already on hand.
You’ll need ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, red pepper flakes, pepper, brown sugar, dijon mustard, molasses, and garlic and onion powders.
Oh, and bourbon, of course! Ben’s a bourbon guy. There’s nothing that man likes more than sipping a warm glass late at night while listening to hip hop music. I don’t…even.
You only need 1/2 cup bourbon for the recipe, so if you don’t have a bottle on hand and don’t feel like buying one, pick up a couple of those little bottles they have near the cash register in the alcohol department of your grocery store. I wouldn’t substitute anything in place of the bourbon – it gives this dish an unbelievably unique flavor.
That being said, don’t tell Ben I used 1/2 cup of his bourbon.
Anyway! Combine the bourbon-BBQ sauce ingredients in the bottom of a large crock pot then whisk to combine.
Next add 2lbs chicken breasts that have been cut in half then smother them in the sauce.
Cook the chicken on low for 4-6 hours (individual crock pot times vary – I only needed 4 hours) or until very tender, then shred with 2 forks. It should pretty much just fall apart at this point!
Scoop out 2 cups of the cooking liquid then let it bubble and reduce in a saucepan on the stove top for 15 minutes, or until slightly thickened. It will continue to thicken as it cools, FYI.
Add the shredded chicken back into the crock pot and stir with the remaining sauce then place a lid on top and keep warm.
Next make the Crunchy Apple Slaw that goes on top of the Bourbon Chicken Sammies. In a large bowl whisk together 2 Tablespoons olive oil, 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar, and 1 Tablespoon honey.
Next add the juice of 1/2 lime and salt and pepper.
To the dressing add 3 cups thinly sliced red cabbage, and 1 thinly chopped Granny Smith Apple, then toss everything to combine. I loved the crispy, crunchy, tart, and sweet flavors in this slaw!
Slice some buns open then top with the shredded chicken…
Top with a few spoonfuls of the reduced bourbon-BBQ sauce…
Then place a few slices of smoked gouda cheese on top. Smoked gouda is ma JAM, people. Probably favorite cheese ever. I got a wedge at Whole Foods but you should be able to find some at most major grocery stores.
Pop the sandwiches under the broiler for a minute to melt the cheese, then top with the Crunchy Apple Slaw and devour.
Crock Pot Bourbon Chicken Sammies with Crunchy Apple Slaw
Serves 6
Adapted from Bon Appetit
Ingredients:
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup bourbon (I used Bulleit)
3 Tablespoons brown sugar
3 Tablespoons light molasses
3 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2lbs chicken breasts, cut in half
6oz smoked gouda, sliced
Buns/rolls
For the Crunchy Apple Slaw:
2 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 Tablespoon honey
juice of 1/2 lime
salt & pepper
3 cups thinly sliced red cabbage
1 large Granny Smith apple, thinly chopped
Directions:
- Combine ingredients from ketchup to pepper in a large crock pot then whisk to combine. Add chicken halves then cover completely in sauce and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until chicken is very tender. (I only needed 4.)
- Remove 2 cups cooking liquid and transfer to a saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce heat slightly and let bubble and thicken, about 15 minutes. Sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Meanwhile, shred chicken with 2 forks then return to crock pot with remaining liquid and stir to combine.
- For the Crunchy Apple Slaw: In a large bowl whisk together olive oil, apple cider vinegar, honey, lime juice, salt and pepper. Add cabbage and apples then toss to combine.
- Place shredded chicken on top of bottom buns then top with reduced sauce and slices of smoked gouda. Place under broiler until cheese is melted then top with Crunchy Apple Slaw and serve.
This is a stand-over-the-sink and inhale kinda sandwich. Which, yes, I freely admit to doing. So worth it. Messy, cheesy, crunchy, and with a deep bourbon flavor, this is one of my favorite recipes to come out of my kitchen in ages. Hope you love it too!

3D printing with liquid metals
While 3D printers of today are basically limited to plastics and resins, the holy grail of desktop fabrication is printing with metal. While we won’t be printing out steel objects on a desktop printer just yet, [Collin Ladd], [Ju-Hee So], [John Muth], and [Michael D. Dickey] from North Carolina State University are slowly working up to that by printing objects with tiny spheres of liquid metal.
The medium the team is using for their metallic 3D prints is an alloy of 75% gallium and 25% indium. This alloy is liquid at room temperatures, but when exposed to an oxygen atmosphere, a very thin layer of oxide forms on a small metal bead squeezed out of a syringe. Tiny metal sphere by tiny metal sphere, the team can build up metallic objects out of this alloy, stacking the beads into just about any shape imaginable.
In addition to small metal spheres, [Collin] and his team were also able to create free-standing wires that are able to join electrical components. Yes, combined with a pick and place machine, a printer equipped with this technology could make true printed circuit boards.
Even though the team is only working on very small scales with gallium, they do believe this technology could be scaled up to print aluminum. A challenging endeavour, but something that would turn the plastic-squeezing 3D printers of today into something much more like the Star Trek replicators of tomorrow.
Video demo below, or check out [Collin]‘s editing room floor and a vimeo channel. Here’s the paper if you’ve got a Wiley subscription.

Iran will provide state-run email addresses to all citizens
Iran is creating the building blocks of a state-controlled internet, and its next major effort appears to be email. Reuters reports that Iran is planning to dole out a government-run email address to each of its citizens and to use the addresses as a way to communicate with them. While that would give the Iranian government a fairly progressive means of communicating with its people, the continued worry is that the state will only use it as another way of monitoring their private lives. Iran is promising to maintain privacy within the service, though full details haven't been revealed.
Reuters reports that data centers are now being set up throughout Iran to handle traffic for the new service, which will be located at mail.post.ir....

Microsoft Banned Google, VMware, Salesforce Employees From Its Big Conference This Week (MSFT)
In all our years in covering enterprise conferences, we've never seen a registration form that specifically bans employees from certain companies from attending.
But Microsoft has flat-out said that if you work for three of its rivals, you can't come to its Worldwide Partner Conference, as first spotted by the VAR Guy.
The WPC conference is happening this week in Houston and it's where people who sell Microsoft products meet to learn the latest from the company.
On the registration form, Microsoft says:
The following companies and their employees and representatives are excluded from pre-purchasing passes for, attending and / or participating in WPC 2013 and affiliated events:
1. Google
2. Salesforce.com
3. VMware
It's such a refreshingly honest approach, rather than letting people submit their registration and be quietly rejected later.
We can certainly understand why Microsoft doesn't want rivals wandering around and mingling with the more than 16,000 attendees from over 160 countries, expected to attend. All of these folks make their livings selling Microsoft products.
But it's almost curious that the list was as short as it was. Apparently, employees from Apple, Amazon, and Red Hat can attend, or at least apply. Ditto for folks that work at Cisco, IBM, Oracle. Microsoft actually has a lot of rivals.
We've asked Microsoft for comment on the ban and will update this story when we hear back.

This Bizarre Fish Can Live On Land For Up To Two Months
Strong leaping skills help a bizarre hermaphrodite fish live out of water for weeks at a time, new research shows.
The mangrove rivulus is a small tropical killifish that's found in swamps from Florida to Brazil, measuring no bigger than 3 inches (75 millimeters) long.
Its dull appearance hides the fact that the fish is sort of a freak; it can survive on land for as long as two months and it has a strange sex life.
All members of the species are hermaphrodites (though a few males have been found), and they are the only known vertebrate, or animal with a backbone, to reproduce by self-fertilizing.
Researchers discovered in 2007 that the fish can live on land for up to 66 days straight, crowding inside the damp tunnels of rotting mangrove logs and even inside old beer cans and coconut shells, Reuters reported at the time. [That's Odd! The 10 Weirdest Animal Discoveries]
During its terrestrial days, the amphibious fish alters its gills so that it can breathe through the skin. But part of the fish's amazing ability to withstand life on land comes from its powerful leap, new research shows.
The team of scientists filmed a rivulus stranded out of water and found that the fish did a "tail flip" to travel. Lying flat on the ground, it curled its head up and then sprung its tail into action, propelling itself both vertically and sideways, the video footage shows.
For comparison, the researchers filmed a largemouth bass flopping around out of water. The bass curled its body into a "c" shape and pushed off the ground, mostly vertically and without much control over its direction.
"Bass are very poor performers at jumping on land, as expected since they very rarely make terrestrial excursions," study researcher Benjamin Perlman, of Wake Forest University, explained in a statement. Bass typically only end up on land when they are washed ashore, chased out by a predator or accidentally hit the ground when leaping out of the water to catch an insect.
"The amphibious rivulus is better adapted to land living and capable of directing its jumps on land using more forceful jumps," Perlman added.
This ability allows the rivulus to get out of aquatic environments that have low oxygen concentrations or high levels of hydrogen sulfide, a compound that is toxic to fish, the researchers say. Its flair for jumping also enables the fish to flee predators and hunt for terrestrial prey such as crickets.
The videos of the fish were released last week by the Society for Experimental Biology.
