Sweet Potato Sriracha Noodle Soup
This is one of those, “I’m sorry but not sorry” post. Yes, I know it’s technically the first day of spring and yes, I know soup is probably the last thing you want to think about (I say as I’m about to head outside and grill.) But, I can promise you, this is a good recipe to have around for those slightly cooler days or days you might not be feeling the best. I’m currently finishing up testing on a large chunk of fall and winter recipes for the cookbook and thus sweet potatoes are still filling my kitchen.
The sriracha adds the perfect kick to the soup but if you want thinks a bit spicier, up the amount of sriracha you use (I think I ended up adding more to my soup as I was eating it). Beyond the sweet potatoes, I’m currently addicted to adding soy sauce and ginger to everything. I also tried to keep this simple in terms of ingredients I normally have on hand so this soup can come together in a pinch. And of course, you can always easily sprout your own beans (this constitutes a lot of fun in my book. I know, living on the wild side.)
- Soup
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- ½ medium red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons minced ginger
- 5 cups vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1-2 tablespoon sriracha*
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 cups cubed sweet potatoes
- 2 ounces soba noodles
- Toppings
- Bean Sprouts
- Cilantro
- Lime Juice
- Toasted Sesame Seeds
- In a pot, heat sesame oil over medium-low heat. Stir in the thinly sliced red onion and cook until soft, 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and minced ginger, cooking for 1 minute more. Next, measure in 4 cups vegetable broth, lime juice, sriracha, and soy sauce. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer.
- Add sweet potatoes and cooking for 7-8 minutes, just until the sweet potatoes are tender, but not too soft. Finally, stir in the noodles and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the noodles are soft.
- Divide into two bowls and top with minced cilantro, bean sprouts, sesame seeds, and extra lime juice.

the latest issue of Kinfolk is dedicated to Home, and it is my favourite issue so far without a doubt. when it arrived i asked people on Instagram where they call home, and it’s amazing to see where all my readers are from – thank you!
one of my favourite stories was this feature on California couple Hannah Henderson, John Moore and their kids who live in a 1975 Venice Beach house, a short walk from the ocean and their shop General Store (see pics of their rad shop at Refinery29).
It’s very much a California boy and desert girl home. John is very connected to the ocean, and I’m influenced by my mom, who is a midwife in Arizona. She always had a great respect for everything natural like plants, sun and fabrics. You can see that in our house.

black bean & quinoa burgers
I’m not sure where to begin here. I can’t decide if I’m more excited to tell you about this vegan veggie burger that I’ve been working on for quite some time, or if I should start by talking about this … Go to the recipe...

daniellejeanI love these!
Whirlwind Jute Rug
daniellejeanCasey, take note! this one is a winner.
Last night I had the pleasure of attending a dinner party at an apartment that gave new meaning to the idea of textile envy. Around every corner there was a beautiful antique rug waiting to be found and, when I peeked into the bedroom, there were layers upon layers of small kilims just hanging out like it was no big deal. I’ve clearly got a rug problem, so I’ve got an ongoing list of rugs I’d love to find a place for in my home one day. Currently being added to the list is this new jute rug at West Elm. I’m mildly obsessed with a cream/black combo these days, so this hand-braided jute and black patterned piece, done in collaboration with Santa Fe’s Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC), is right up my alley. The rug is $169 and measures 6′ in diameter- perfect for under a small dining table or in an entryway. Click here for more information and to place an on order online. xo, grace
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Ugly House
Dear Gays,
Have you seen the Harper’s Bazaar spread of Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Totally Ugly Hollywood Hills House? I have. And when I say “Totally Ugly,” I mean, totally glamorous and enviable and like the exact house I want to live in right now. Which makes me want to die.
Are you ever just, like, minding your own business, thinking life is totally fine, when all the sudden you see something that makes you feel like a homeless troll that lives in a cardboard box under a bridge? Well, that’s exactly how I felt when I saw Jeremiah and Nate’s house. Is it really necessary that they be so attractive and rich and that their house be so perfect? How are the rest of us supposed to continue to live in our, like, totally average worlds? I hate everything.
Here they are in their glamourous office. Which overlooks a glamourous pool. That I want to drown myself in after staring at their perfectly coiffed hair and impeccable suits.
I’m digging how they incorporated black into their home. Like the black ceiling with the gold Tom Dixon pendant. I’d like to canoodle both of those. And then I’d like to canoodle Jeremiah and Nate. When I hide in their bed. To scare them. And because I secretly want to crawl inside their skin and live their lives. Mainly so that I can high-five with Oprah.
I love how dark and sexy the bedroom is. And the high gloss black ceiling is to die for. And that vintage woven chair.
I also like how bright and airy their living room is. The weird architectural detail and the mysterious fireplace with no chimney don’t do anything to taint it’s perfection.
Just think of all the glamorous A-list parties that are going to happen here (Sidenote, Jeremiah and Nate, can I come?). Some day soon Oprah will be taking a dip in this pool, laughing alongside other daytime television hosts drinking champagne, laughing about how delightful life is and how humorous and entertaining poor people are.
And look at their cute little kitchen. I want that mint range! And my mom would love to add those goats to her goat figurine collection (she totally has one and it’s amazing).
And the kitchen wouldn’t be complete without two obnoxiously attractive men in it, cooking together and thinking about how much they enjoy love. Oh that I were that lime, so that Nate could stab me, put me in a meringue, toss me in the oven, and allow me to burn to a crisp, thus ending the agony that is not living in this awesome house.
I’m going to crawl back into my cardboard box now and dream about the future when I am as smooth and cherubic as Jeremiah or as rugged and blond mountainy as Nate. Someday…
Love,
Orlando
PS: To make the Harper’s spread even more alienatingly attractive, it was shot by the hottest photographer that ever lived, Douglas Friedman. He looks like this:

Sofia Coppola Limited Edition Louis Vuitton
daniellejeanegads! love.
How amazing are these shots from Vogue Paris of the new limited edition Sofia Coppola for Louis Vuitton bag? The design is a gorgeous take on her original 2009 bag (love the pop of purple!) and the styling in the photos killer (that apartment!). The limited edition bag is exclusively available at the stylish Parisian department store, Bon Marché Rive Gauche. I’m seriously thinking a move to Paris is in my five-year-plan, what do you think?

Winter Wedding in Paris
daniellejeanswoon.
This wintertime Parisian wedding may just be the loveliest thing I ever did see. I so admire the bride’s style — romantic Swiss dot gown, vintage fur coat, white ranunculus bouquet. The simplicity of it all is so refreshing. The bride’s name is Eleonore and she has the chicest instagram ever (please note that she wears Birkenstocks). I wish we were friends.

HOUSE TOUR :: A SURF STORY
daniellejeandream home.
Today I’m heading to the shore for the rest of the week, and it feels so good to get out of the city. I have to say that I think my natural roots are always places by the water. Growing up just a few blocks from Venice Beach in LA, I was born a water baby. So, my ultimate dream someday is a house on the shore – preferably by the ocean. Which got me thinking… what would your ultimate beach house look like? Well, I came up with a few options to share with you – starting with this natural, modern beauty…
If you took the average surf shack and upped it to a surfer’s dream home, I’m pretty sure it might look something like this.
The indoor areas blend seamlessly into the outdoors as natural woods run throughout the home, while the attention to detail keeps it from getting too boring. Nearly all the wood used was recycled timber.
I can honestly say I may love the outdoor areas even more than the indoor. They look so inviting and loungy! Just as it should be with a beach house.
And of course, if you happen to have a roof built for cannonballs, well, even better.
What do you think? Does this raw, somewhat industrial style have an appeal to you? Part of me thinks I’d miss some more traditional elements (like white walls and molding) but I have to say that feeling like a part of the natural landscape is also quite appealing…
