Buckling up zigzag nanobelts

by Birgit Esser

Nature Chemistry, Published online: 01 March 2021; doi:10.1038/s41557-021-00642-0

The first two examples of zigzag carbon nanobelts have been reported. These compounds have been elusive targets for synthetic chemists for 35 years, but strategic structural modifications and mastering challenging multi-step syntheses finally brought success.

A tunable Fabry–Pérot quantum Hall interferometer in graphene

by Corentin Déprez

Nature Nanotechnology, Published online: 25 February 2021; doi:10.1038/s41565-021-00847-x

Similar to optical waves, electrons can also interfere, but they require high-quality devices with minimal scattering for an experimental observation of this effect. An interferometer based on a single sheet of graphene provides an alternative to the more standard semiconductor devices and may in future enable access to exotic quantum effects, such as anyon braiding.

Van der Waals epitaxial growth of air-stable CrSe2 nanosheets with thickness-tunable magnetic order

by Bo Li

Nature Materials, Published online: 01 March 2021; doi:10.1038/s41563-021-00927-2

CrSe2 nanosheets grown on WSe2 show no apparent change in surface roughness or magnetic properties after months of exposure in air. Calculations suggest that charge transfer from the WSe2 substrate and interlayer coupling within CrSe2 play a critical role.

Robust flexible electrodes with 2D interlayers

by Seung Hwan Ko

Nature Electronics, Published online: 15 February 2021; doi:10.1038/s41928-021-00543-7

The electrical and mechanical robustness of thin metal film electrodes can be improved by adding an atomically thin interlayer, such as graphene, between the metal and the flexible substrate.

Hall effects in artificially corrugated bilayer graphene without breaking time-reversal symmetry

by Sheng-Chin Ho

Nature Electronics, Published online: 22 February 2021; doi:10.1038/s41928-021-00537-5

Artificial corrugations in bilayer graphene can produce a nonlinear anomalous Hall effect that originates from the Berry curvature dipole and a linear Hall effect that originates from a warped Rashba-like valley–orbit coupled band dispersion.

The performance limits of hexagonal boron nitride as an insulator for scaled CMOS devices based on two-dimensional materials

by Theresia Knobloch

Nature Electronics, Published online: 23 February 2021; doi:10.1038/s41928-020-00529-x

This Perspective assesses the performance limits of hexagonal boron nitride when used as a gate insulator in complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) devices based on two-dimensional materials, concluding that due to excessive leakage currents, the material is unlikely to be suitable for use in ultrascaled CMOS devices.
