Rainmaker: A Plant Watering Cloud

by Caroline Williamson

Rainmaker: A Plant Watering Cloud

Who needs a fancy watering can when you can take an old plastic soda bottle (1, 1.5, or 2 liter) and attach the adorable Rainmaker to it to get the job done? Fill the bottle with water, screw on the cloud like you would a cap, turn it over, squeeze and make it rain!

A Wired Desk That’s Built Into A Cabinet

When closed, this piece of furniture doesn’t look that exciting, just a small storage piece. Flip the front door down and you see its entirety – a fully-functioning workspace hidden within a cabinet. The Cabinet-desk, by Laura Petraitytė, is a compact desk that’s easily accessed, has plenty of storage, comes with a built-in LED light, and also has integrated AC sockets to plug your gear into.

Colgate Searle

by Grace Bonney

Screen Shot 2013-08-23 at 7.37.46 AM
Yesterday I picked up lunch from my favorite spot in Greenpoint, Ash Box Cafe. Ash Box (named because of its location between Ash and Box streets) is a quirky space that serves incredibly delicious and healthy Japanese food and is always full of unexpected visual details like tiny tree stump card holders and gorgeous metal handles on the sliding bathroom doors. I visit so often I feel like I’ve seen all the design details before, but yesterday I caught two things I’d missed– beautiful wire hanger sculptures by Colgate Searle. Based in Brooklyn, Colgate elevates the humble wire hanger to entirely new levels with his sweet and thoughtful sculptures. I’m particularly fond of the animals, but Colgate also creates whimsical cars, people and eyeglasses from wire, too. Click here to check out more of his work online. xo, grace

in orbit: A Gigantic Floating Installation by Tomás Saraceno

in orbit: A Gigantic Floating Installation by Tomás Saraceno

Artist and architect Tomás Saraceno (you know, the Cloud Cities guy) created a massive layered installation that’s suspended more than 25 meters (approx. 82 feet) in the air of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen museum in Düsseldorf, Germany. “in orbit” stretches across the piazza under the mammoth glass ceiling of the K21 Ständehaus with its three levels of steel wire netting. Situated on the three levels are six inflated spheres that range in size, with the largest being 27 feet in diameter.

Visitors to the museum can climb around the nets, if they dare, becoming a part of the surreal installation. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re floating amongst the clouds, now’s your chance as the exhibition will be around until Autumn 2014 (estimated).

end…Link Beauty Salon by Yasunari Tsukada Design

This Osaka, Japan-based beauty salon might have an unusual name, end…Link, but when you hear the owner’s reasoning behind it, it makes sense. They wanted this Yasunari Tsukada-designed salon destination to be “the last word in beauty.” While the business has been in operation for years, the team expanded and a larger space was necessary. So, the long and narrow, newly-rented space gives each hair stylist a more than adequate place to work.

Keeping a minimal scheme with simple wood stations and shelving, along with the chairs, gives a uniform, uncluttered look. The entire salon was painted white to give the appearance of space and cleanliness.

The designers came up with a three-dimensional lattice system that resembles parts of a jungle gym to create the stations used to store and hang things on. They then attached hooks, lighting, and glass panels to make them function for the stylists. They’re flexible and can evolve over time to suit the stylist’s needs.

Make It Modern: DIY Colorful Plasti Dip Key Tops

by Meg Kemner

Make It Modern: DIY Colorful Plasti Dip Key Tops

Little attractive details make all the difference when you’re trying to keep things organized. For instance, I’ve been thinking how great it would be to color-code my keys in a more distinctive way than your typical slide-on key covers offer. Having a few plain colors was nice, but I needed another way to show further distinctions among those colors (I have a shameful number of keys).

Then I remembered rubberizer! You should make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area if you’re using it, but it’s a ton of fun to play with. You’ll end up wanting to rubberize everything you own. Plasti Dip makes a Create Your Color Kit, so I decided to make my own tops using little wooden letters and toys.

You’ll need:

Supplies:
- keys
- Performix Plasti Dip Create Your Color
- Super Glue
- miniature figures or letters (I found a good selection of these at AC Moore and my local Artist & Craftsman)
- glass mixing containers (a note on that below)
- a pack of toothpicks, coffee stirrers, or small paint brushes
- a craft knife

An anecdote on storage: If you’re mixing colors in plastic instead of glass or metal, don’t let them sit overnight. I left my project out to finish the final coat the next morning, and when I came back, all of the plastic cups I’d mixed in had dissolved the cups into gooey blobs.

Fortunately nothing was damaged, and the cups held up fine while working on the project, but I obviously wasn’t able to do much with them the next day. According to Maynard G the Mix Master, a resealable glass container will work just fine.

Step 1: Figure out how you want your miniatures set on the key, and glue them on. Be careful and quick when you’re placing them – the glue dries fast and strong, so you won’t get too much of a chance to reposition anything. When considering placement, make sure you leave space for a key hole if you intend to use a key ring.

Step 2: Mix your colors – the tints are VERY heavily pigmented, so a little goes a long way. Keep in mind that less is more, and only mix a drop or two at a time. For example, I made a pretty aqua using about 2 drops of blue, 1 drop of yellow (pictured), and a drop of white. You really don’t need much. Start small and add slowly as you need.

Step 3: Here’s where the Plasti “Dip” was a little misleading. Since you’re using miniatures, you don’t actually want to dip the keys. Rubberizer is really goopy and fills in holes, so if you dip, you could end up with little blobs instead of figures or letters. Instead, use a brush or – what I ended up using – a toothpick to carefully apply the colors. If you apply too much or it hides detail around the edges, you can use a craft knife to trace around your miniature for more detail before you put on a second or third coat. It’ll look a little weird at first, but just pull off any little nubs you don’t want and it’ll work itself out after a couple more coats.

Step 4: Let the Plasti Dip dry for at least 24 hours before using, and you’re set!

The little alligator on my bike key is probably my favorite of the bunch – I like how his tail wrapped around the key loop!

Attaching a much larger item would make a really useful “bathroom key” to offer customers at a coffee shop or similar place of business. And if you want to go super-custom, you can always make your own shapes and tops out of Sculpey and then dip away!

Sofia Coppola | The Bling Ring

by annab

BR1

It feels like ions since we last had an opportunity to chirrup knowingly about Sofia Coppola and her latest masterpiece to anyone that will listen, but the wait certainly seems to be worth it. The Bling Ring – what appears to be a glossy yet gritty crime drama starring British darling Emma Watson – will open at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with a wider release aimed for June 14th 2013.

BR3

Based on a series of actual events occurring in California in 2008 and 2009, the film uncovers the story of a group of materialistic teenagers known as The Bling Ring, which used the internet and social media to track its favourite celebrities and rob their homes while they were out. High profile targets for the ‘Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch’ (as they are also known) include Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton, whose house was hit the most by the group. *Chuckles*

_DSC6235.NEF

Since Coppola’s last project Somewhere – an ethereal, cinematographically-exquisite film exploring Hollywood’s landmark Chateau Marmont as the basis for an emotional journey between a father and his distanced daughter – fans have been squirming to see her iconic cinematic styling applied to a darker story. And this Gen Y Thelma-and-Louise-meets-90210 tale might be the perfect canvas. As Coppola noted, the film will “reveal a sobering view of our modern culture,” obsessed with celebrity and the plastic fantastic of fame.

BR4

In an effort to put her Harry Potter days firmly behind her, Emma Watson will be playing the role of Nicki, whose character was inspired by one of the gang’s ringleaders, Alexis Neier. Neier recently took to Twitter to denounce Coppola’s vision as “trashy and inaccurate”, suggesting we might be in for another glossy, who-gives-a-fuck experience similar to the one delivered by Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. Having previously backed Coppola on her blog, Neier seems disappointed that the trailer unfolded “just another party movie based on teens robbing celebrity homes.”

An opinion-divided atmosphere is often the best to release a film into and Coppola has managed to stir up a decent discussion ahead of The Bling Ring’s release. Considering the lead role of Rachel Lee (chief ringleader) went to a relatively unknown actress (Katie Chang), leaving Watson, one of only a few name-droppable actors in the shadows – we can expect a more sensitive, indie flick than its trailer suggests. Bring it on, Coppola.
