A Sign Of The Times

by Stephen Totilo
Dsider

sigh

The option to disable copyrighted music in a major video game would have been unthinkable or at least seemed irrelevant years ago. Now it’s in a major Xbox One release like Quantum Break, as seen here. This will likely become increasingly common as game makers want gamers to be able to stream without fear of overly aggressive music copyright hawks. Imagine this for Grand Theft Auto VI!

The Greatsword of Artorias From Dark Souls Isn't For Normal Human Beings

by Gergo Vas
Dsider

It's not what you think, but it's still one sexy sword.

Also I've come to the realization that, in another life, I would have liked to have become a modern blacksmith had I known that was even a possibility.

Even for veteran fighters from medieval times, handling a giant two-handed sword must have been a challenge. And while the folks at Man at Arms did a very good job forging a replica of this iconic weapon from Dark Souls, they have a bit of trouble wielding it.

I tried this at pax last year, really fun

Leap of Fate popped up in Steam’s “popular new releases” section this week, so I decided to give it a shot on a whim. Surprise: it’s rad. Think Binding of Isaac in an occult-tinged cyberpunk setting, with a really cool structure, and you’re there.

The Strange Mystery Game From the Creator of Dragon Quest

by Peter Tieryas on Talk Amongst Yourselves, shared by András Neltz to Kotaku
The Strange Mystery Game From the Creator of Dragon Quest

Murder, sexual innuendo, and crime mixed together in the strange adventure game known as the Portopia Serial Murder Case (Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken). What was even stranger was that its principal designer was a young Yuji Horii, the man who’d go on to develop the Dragon Quest series and become a household name in Japan. It was 1983, and the platform was the NEC PC-6001. The Portopia Serial Murder Case had the distinction of being the first adventure game for the Famicom (for which it was ported in 1985), as well as inspiring Hideo Kojima to become a game developer (it’s supposed to exist as an Easter Egg in MGSV). Portopia was never released for American audiences, and so I only recently became aware of the game. Considering its mature themes, it’s not a big surprise. Fortunately, a fan group called DvD Translations did a faithful translation into English that allowed western gamers to experience it directly for the first time. Its remarkable place in gaming history has as much to do with the fact that it influenced the entire visual novel genre as it did its innovative storytelling that had gamers puzzled, perplexed, and hooked. I’m starting a series of articles about Yuji Horii’s games and I thought this would be the perfect launching point.

Cursing Is Still Allowed In Nintendo’s Miitomo App

by Evan Narcisse

Important questions. Quickly, hurry up and get on this service so we can curse each other out while we still can. Or I mean, we can curse each other out irl if you prefer, but that's not as much fun

Today is the day that Miitomo launches in the United States and many other countries. When Nintendo’s first mobile release came out two weeks ago in Japan, you could get your Mii character to say curse words. As of right now, your Mii can still drop f-bombs to friends and family.
