James Dyer: Shrinking Media With The Help Of Emacs

by James Dyer
Tom Roche

EXCELLENT, useful, informative: been using Dired for ... 35 years? and never learned I could chang `ls` switches on-the-fly with `C-u s`. archived @ https://archive.today/A3h1S (archive.org won't)

Often I find myself refining my collection of photos and family videos, usually with the following process:

  • removing media clutter
  • removing any duplicates
  • tagging as necessary
  • compressing where reasonable
  • renaming to a more denote format

Emacs and the associated muscle memory greatly helps with this process.

Firstly though I leverage other applications, for example, duplicate removal and tagging takes place through digikam, media clutter through thunar and gthumb

My emacs process is then:

  • open media directory in dired

  • sort by size using C-u s S - the big S is setting the ls format by size

  • M-< (beginning-of-buffer) - so I can see the largest files

  • if I want to squish a video I will probably want to preview it first in mpv, so I do this asynchronously using & (dired-do-async-shell-command) and relying on my defined dired-guess-shell-alist-user setup and then selecting i (mpv shortcut) to have a quick peek at the original dimensions. Typically if the video is 1920x1080 then I like to halve the dimensions which when running through ffmpeg saves about 80-90% on disk space.

I have my own ffmpeg bash scripts which I call through dwim-shell-command so a command search for something like dw sh my/dwim-video-shrink will dired execute the file under cursor or over a list of marked files.

  • for images I again use dwim-shell-command with a quick command search for something like dw cr my/dwim-picture-crush which isn’t always as brutal as it might suggest but a script that I regularly modify when compressing images, setting the compression parameters appropriately.

If I need to quickly inspect the image then I could open it in emacs but I prefer again to open in gthumb using &

  • Possibly at the end of a directory compress I might check the directory size by ? in dired which I have mapped to an elisp my/get-file-size function that runs the async-shell-command du -

  • and of course my files can be easily renamed through wdired

As I am using a tiling window manager all of this can be accomplished keyboard only and on a single screen!

753 - Gurnee Nights (7/27/23)

Tom Roche

amusing

Our take on the Congressional UFO Hearing. Biden has a new dog that’s even more poorly behaved than the last one. DeSantis continues to hemorrhage staff, this time losing his brain trust of 20-something groypers. Trump expounds on his faith, and we discuss his many, many impending indictments. Finally, the return of Obama’s limousine superhead.

all 3, mostly just bant, but amusing

We’re talking normal guy stuff today, from embracing bronze age masculinity from a certain Pervert, to new perversions from a certain modern masculinity advocate. Also on the docket: Israel loses the Times editorial board, and Matt & Felix are held accountable for their deep state ties and banana crimes.

EXCELLENT funny informative

Is having a crush anti-feminist? Are Barbies blue-pilled? Is Ken the protagonist, actually? Is Legally Blonde a better Barbie movie than The Barbie Movie? Is it feminist to manipulate men? And what does it say about how the filmmakers feel about Barbie when the movie ends with Barbie, well, choosing what she chose? This one contains spoilers, but not ones that I think really change how you'll view the film. Leslie Lee III & Kate Willett join Briahna to break down the good, the bad, the Barbie.

7/25/23: Biden's Aides Desperate To Hide Aging, Ohio Overwhelmingly Backs Pro-Choice, Americans Reject Biden Cluster Bombs, Dorsey Trashes Worldcoin Surveillance, Pinkydoll Tik Tok Phenomenon, Disney Fires DEI, Affirmative Action For The Rich

Krystal goes ham on 'legacy admissions', aka 'Affirmative Action for the Rich'.

downside:
- episode notes advertise SE radar on 'Disney and Netflix firing diversity bureaucrats': this was /not/ actually included in my download, which abends after KB's radar (and playing theme tune).

Krystal and Saagar discuss the Biden administration desperate to hide the president's aging, Ohio overwhelmingly backs pro-choice amendment, Americans reject Biden sending Cluster Bombs to Ukraine, Jack Dorsey trashes dystopian crypto "World Coin" surveillance, the PinkyDoll viral Tik Tok Phenomenon explained, Saagar looks into Disney and Netflix firing diversity bureaucrats, and Krystal looks into Affirmative Action for the Rich in College Admissions.

The Infinite Monkey Cage

Tom Roche

amusing *and* informative

Brian Cox and Robin Ince tackle one of the most important questions posed by science: which is better, bees or wasps? To defend bees, ecologist Dave Goulson joins the panel, while entomologist Seirian Sumner comes to the defence of wasps. Although both species are known to deliver a nasty sting, Seirian and Dave battle to show why their species should be loved, not swotted, and how we unknowingly rely on them. Comedian Catherine Bohart takes on the role of judge. Which will she ultimately choose: bees or wasps? New episodes are released on Saturdays. 4/14/23: Krystal Reacts To Leaker Arrest, Jen Psaki Insists She's A Real Journalist, VA Teacher Shot By Student, Krystal and Kyle Interview Norman Finkelstein

Tom Roche

Episode begins with 3 good-but-skippable K&S segments (no partners this week), so I recommend skipping to 15:10 in the audio for (as usual for NF) excerpts (from [KKF](https://substack.com/profile/603504-krystal-kyle-and-friends)) an occasionally-very-excellent, occasionally-facepalming, wide-ranging interview with Norman Finkelstein on topics including
- Bernie Sanders: his politics, successes, and failures
- (defining) left wokism and (distinguishing) right antiwokism
~70 min listen (15:10 to EOA @ 85:34)

This week Krystal reacts in the moment to the Pentagon leaker being arrested, Jen Psaki makes the argument that she's a real journalist, a Teacher recovers from being shot by her 6 year old student, and Krystal and Kyle do a full length interview with writer and American political activist Norman Finkelstein on a range of topics.

The Disinformation Hoax of the Century

by Aaron Maté
Tom Roche

Consistently EXCELLENT (except for 3rd of 4 foodgroups, which is lame but also short), esp the Jacob Siegel interview (starts 20:01) on how the US deepstate is creating (from c2014) a Disinformation Industrial Complex to regulate the speech and (they hope) ideology of the US 99%

Subscribe for the full episode at the bottom of the page. Watch a free preview here:

“Something monstrous is taking shape in America,” warns journalist Jacob Siegel in an article at Tablet:

Formally, it exhibits the synergy of state and corporate power in service of a tribal zeal that is the hallmark of fascism… A state organized on the principle that it exists to protect the sovereign rights of individuals is being replaced by a digital leviathan that wields power through opaque algorithms and the manipulation of digital swarms.

America is ruled by a regime of censorship whose aim “is not to censor or to oppress, but to rule. That’s why the authorities can never be labeled as guilty of disinformation.” What is disinformation? It’s “whatever they say it is.” But, Siegel argues, “if the underlying philosophy of the war against disinformation can be expressed in a single claim, it is this: You cannot be trusted with your own mind.”

Since 2016, the US has pumped out Orwellian programs like the Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act and Nina Jankowicz’s (Scary Poppins) Disinformation Governance Board, claiming that protecting citizens from state spying was jeopardizing national security. The US was losing “influence warfare.”

Make sure to watch the full Substack-only interview, in which Siegel weighs in on the Twitter Files, discusses the significance of Hunter Biden’s laptop story, and pushes back against the claim that they didn’t reveal any censorship.

Russia leaves neoliberal West to join World Majority

Tom Roche

Excellent (as usual with these Desai-Hudson Geopolitical Economy Hours), but mistitled--this episode (see transcript @ [ep page](https://geopoliticaleconomy.com/2023/04/14/russia-neoliberal-west-world-majority/), archived [here](https://archive.today/BD1NF) and [here](http://web.archive.org/web/20230414181534/https://geopoliticaleconomy.com/2023/04/14/russia-neoliberal-west-world-majority/)) is more about creating a new/better global financial system than the post-1971 (Nixon Shock) v2 of the post-Bretton-Woods v1 (bastardized from Keynes' bancor-based v0, as discussed) of the current {US dollar, IMF, World Bank}-based global financial system. Towards end, Hudson makes a brief (TODO: needs expanding), interesting {historical, world-systems-theory-ish} claim that (IIUC)
- 1914/WW1 broke a developing transition from industrial capitalism into socialism, replacing it with US-based finance capitalism
- 2022/RUW is breaking that US-based global financial system, allowing (most of) the world to return to the pre-WW1, industrial-capitalism->socialism track
From the [transcript](https://geopoliticaleconomy.com/2023/04/14/russia-neoliberal-west-world-majority/):

> MICHAEL HUDSON: Well, you can say that Eurasia today is picking up the strain of world history where the world left off in 1913 and 1914.

> World War I changed the whole direction of the world. It stopped the evolution of industrial capitalism into socialism, with the Russian Revolution and the great fight against the Soviet Union. And it replaced industrial capitalism with finance capitalism.

> And today, over a century later, now finally Eurasia is taking the lead in rejecting this retrogression into neo-feudal finance capitalism and picking up where the world was evolving from industrial capitalism into socialism, which seemed to be the wave of the future for everybody who was writing until World War I was such a shock that it traumatized history.

> We’re only right now getting over it with Europe and America fighting against it. They don’t want the world to continue the way it was going in 1914. That’s why they sent all the troops into Russia to try to overthrow the revolution. They’re doing everything they can to prevent it and the rest of the world’s task is to fight for civilization against the forces of reaction.

Economists Radhika Desai and Michael Hudson discuss Russia's economic transition away from the neoliberal West and integration with what it calls the "World Majority" in the Global South. EXCELLENT, Jennifer and Jack at their best, this time on how the US push for high-stakes testing has moved from targeting students to targeting their schools, and how different states' testing regimes differ

And what accounts for the seeming paradox that the public turned against high-stakes tests for students while continuing to support high-stakes tests for schools? Obituaries for Nuremberg Prosecutor Erase His Beliefs About the U.S.

by Jon Schwarz
Tom Roche

VERY EXCELLENT--Schwarz in no-comedy, serious-like-cardiac-arrest mode. pullquote (slightly edited, mostly adding material from later in the piece):
> [Benjamin Ferencz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Ferencz) died last week at the age of 103. Ferencz was the last surviving member of the team of prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials after World War II, which led to the convictions of many top Nazi officials and since been understood as the exemplar of justice for war crimes. Ferencz [spent] the rest of his life advocating for the creation of an international criminal court and accountability for war criminals generally. These facts appear in his obituaries. What’s missing from all of them in major outlets — including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the BBC, The Guardian, Reuters, [the] Associated Press[, CNN, NPR, CBS, Bloomberg, the New York Daily News, UPI, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Le Monde, the New York Post, the Daily Mail, the New York Sun, and Yahoo News] — is Ferencz’s belief that top members of the George W. Bush administration, including Bush himself, should have been tried for war crimes for the Iraq War.

Note that the Wikipedia bio linked above repeatedly/oddly refers to Ferencz's statements using the verb 'suggest':
> Ferencz repeatedly argued against this procedure and suggested that the US join the ICC without reservations, as it was a long-established rule of law that "law must apply equally to everyone", also in an international context. In this vein, he suggested in an interview given on August 25, 2006, that not only Saddam Hussein should be tried, but also George W. Bush because the Iraq War had been begun by the US without permission by the UN Security Council. He also suggested that Bush should be tried in the International Criminal Court for "269 war crime charges" related to the Iraq War.

Benjamin Ferencz died last week at the age of 103. Ferencz was the last surviving member of the team of prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials after World War II, which led to the convictions of many top Nazi officials and since been understood as the exemplar of justice for war crimes.

Ferencz served in the U.S. Army during the war and in its aftermath investigated the conditions at the Buchenwald, Mauthausen, and Dachau concentration camps. He spent the rest of his life advocating for the creation of an international criminal court and accountability for war criminals generally.

These facts appear in his obituaries. What’s missing from all of them in major outlets — including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the BBC, The Guardian, Reuters, and the Associated Press — is Ferencz’s belief that top members of the George W. Bush administration, including Bush himself, should have been tried for war crimes for the Iraq War.

This is not obscure, difficult-to-obtain information. In 2002, the Times published a letter to the editor from Ferencz stating that “a preemptive military strike [on Iraq] not authorized by the Security Council would clearly violate the UN Charter that legally binds all nations.” In December 2003, Ferencz said in an interview, “The invasion by the U.S. of Iraq, I think, would also qualify under the Nuremberg principles as a violation of international law. … If you’re going to have that kind of a factual situation as we have in Iraq, I think the first trial should be a trial which is absolutely fair and should include all the principle perpetrators and planners of the crimes which occurred.” Ferencz wrote the foreword to a 2009 book titled “George W. Bush, War Criminal?: The Bush Administration’s Liability for 269 War Crimes.” He also wrote the foreword for another book, “Blood on Our Hands: The American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq.”

Yet the Times published an almost-2,000 word obituary for Ferencz without mentioning this. It somehow includes the sentence, “Critics say the [International Criminal Court] has focused on prosecutions in Africa while American wars have not even been investigated,” without mentioning that one of the most vociferous critics of this was Ferencz.

The Post’s obituary for Ferencz is 1,500 words long and mentions that after Nuremberg, he “devoted much of the rest of his life to the cause of international justice.” It also quotes Ferencz at Nuremberg as saying, “Death was their tool and life their toy. If these men be immune, then law has lost its meaning, and man must live in fear.” But there’s nothing about Iraq.

The BBC informs us that “[i]n his later years, he became a professor of international law and campaigned for an international court that could prosecute the leaders of governments found to have committed war crimes, writing several books on the subject.” There’s no mention of Iraq and Bush.

Ferencz’s Iraq perspective also goes unmentioned in Reuters. The Guardian found space to tell us, “Guided by his motto, ‘Law, Not War,’ Ferencz was still giving television interviews last year – arguing that those responsible for atrocities in Ukraine must be brought to trial.” His words about Iraq do not appear anywhere.

CNN likewise mentions Ferencz’s words on Ukraine, but not Iraq. NPR said nothing about Iraq not once, but twice. The list continues with CBS, Bloomberg, the New York Daily News, the Guardian again, the Associated PressUPI, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Le Monde, the New York Post, the Daily Mail, and the New York Sun.

Yahoo News does manage to say that Ferencz’s principles led him to “strongly criticize the George W. Bush administration for its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and for what he described as a refusal to abide by international norms.” However, there’s no information indicating that Ferencz thought Bush & Co. should be tried.

The media’s erasure of Ferencz’s views is especially distressing given his lifelong emphasis on the importance of remembering the past. In a speech just as the Iraq War commenced, Ferencz reminded the audience that the United Nations charter is “international law binding on all nations. We owe it to the memory of the dead to honor these commitments to peace.”

One thing worth remembering in this context are the famous opening remarks at Nuremberg by Robert Jackson, the chief justice:

If certain acts of violation of treaties are crimes, they are crimes whether the United States does them or whether Germany does them. And we are not prepared to lay down the rule of criminal conduct against others which we would not be willing to have invoked against us. We must never forget that the record on which we judge these defendants is the record on which history will judge us tomorrow. To pass these defendants a poisoned chalice is to put it to our own lips as well.

Sadly, by the end of Ferencz’s life, he understood why Jackson’s confidence was misplaced and might not be surprised by the glaring omissions in his obituaries. “No country that prefers to use its power rather than the rule of law will vote for the rule of law, it’s logical,” he said in a recent documentary. “There are some people who do not trust the rule of law, and they prefer to use military power to achieve their goals as they decide, when they decide. That’s led by the United States. … War will make mass murderers out of otherwise decent people. … It’s inevitable, whether they are Americans, or they’re Germans, or anybody else.”

Regime Change Failed But the Plot to Destroy Syria Continues

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT deepdive into US sanctions vs Syria from 1979 as precursor (and now postcursor) to proxy war by Axis of Evil (US, Israel, Turkey, Gulf monarchies)

Before 2011, Syria was a relatively stable country that had decent electricity, one of the best medical sectors in the region and produced much of its own food and medicine. Today Syria has collapsing infrastructure, dire food insecurity, crippling fuel shortages, severe brain drain and only has control over part of the country’s territory. Mainstream US media places all the blame on President Assad while covering up the role of US sanctions.

To discuss the decades-long US war on Syria, Rania Khalek was joined by Greg Shupak, author of the book “The Wrong Story: Palestine, Israel, and the Media” published by OR books. Greg also has a chapter in the book “Sanctions As War: Anti-Imperialist Perspectives on American Geo-Economic Strategy,” which was published by Brill and Haymarket.

722 - Night At The Museum 2: Battle for Camp Gettintop (4/10/23)

Tom Roche

amusing, just the 3 bantering, pop not (much) politics

New details about Clarence Thomas’ billionaire benefactor Harlan Crow keep coming to light, forcing us to contemplate new questions like: What do Lenin, Mao and Hagrid’s Hut have in common? And, do Hitler’s napkins force us to confront the evil in the hearts of men? We contemplate this plus: DeSantis flails, Kanye’s school has no stairs, and the Dalai Lama sucks tongue. All this and more on today’s ep.

US bank bailout benefited billionaires, exposing corruption: ‘I understand why Americans are angry’

Tom Roche

excellent summary of what Desai and Hudson covered in greater detail/expanse on their 27 Mar GEH (MP3 [here](https://feeds.soundcloud.com/stream/1477588798-geopoliticaleconomy-wall-street-treasury-bank-crisis.mp3), episode page [here](https://soundcloud.com/geopoliticaleconomy/wall-street-treasury-bank-crisis))

Before it collapsed and its billionaire depositors were bailed out by the US government, Silicon Valley Bank successfully lobbied Congress to remove regulations on it. A senator admitted, “I understand why Americans are angry, even disgusted”. 4/10/23: Leaked Ukraine War Docs, China's Red Lines On Ukraine, Mossad Behind Israel Protests, Pentagon Censors Leaks, Elon Vs Substack, Texas BLM Shooter, Laura Loomer Vs MTG, Jon Stewart Destroys Pentagon Official, Abortion Pill

Tom Roche

more-consistently-good than most recent Breaking Points, though still some analytic fails (esp regarding the NATO proxy war on Russia in Ukraine, though at least Krystal is starting to consistently point out that the RUW is a war /in/ Ukraine, rather than primarily a Russia-vs-Ukraine conflict) and some timewasting (Laura Loomer vs MTG? really?)

Krystal and Saagar discuss a massive trove of leaked documents released to us that show inner details on Ukraine War, China's Red Lines on the Ukraine War, and how Mossad worked to foment the protests in Israel, the Pentagon racing to censor the leaks, Elon declaring war on SubStack and Matt Taibbi by removing Substack links from Twitter, did the Texas BLM Shooter act in self defense, Laura Loomer and Marjorie Taylor Greene battle for Trump's affection, Saagar looks into how Jon Stewart destroyed a Pentagon official on their Failed Audits, and Krystal looks into how the Abortion Pill question melted a Republican Rep's brains.
