How Israel Became a Nuclear Power / Emma Claire Foley
Tom Rocheinteresting discussion (from 11:22-73:02 in the audio--rest is the usual /TiH/ announcements, bants, and hijinks) of nuclear weapons in geopolitics and US domestic politics. While it is unfortunately almost completely /not/ about /How Israel Became a Nuclear Power/ (i.e., the episode title), which gets only a very brief mention about the role of France and Norway in assisting Israel to acquire nuclear weapons, there is lots about global nuclear proliferation (esp Israel), how the US deepstate (and its imperial vassals) differentially enforces US and international law, and related topics.
Zionism Before, During and After the Nazis: A History of Collusion, w/ Tony Greenstein

Tom Rocheoverall EXCELLENT: when KB+SE finally manage to tear themselves away from the boat-car-plane-train-submarine crash that is US politics, they can still do great work (at least, compared to the dumpster fire that is US corporate-funded media). This episode has 4-ish (shoulda counted--some of below may be multipart) segments including (in order, if not fully enumerating):
1. KB+SE on the world-historical evil of the US-G7-Israel empire genocide in Palestine, particularly methodologically-better estimates of the Gaza death toll
2. excellent interview with founders={Jeremy Scahill, Ryan Grim} of the new [Drop Site News](https://dropsitenews.com/) org (see also released-today [Chapo interview with Scahill and Grim](https://sphinx.acast.com/p/open/s/5fd1001d81367d4cb41fe325/e/668cc18ba3adc7b114305b7b/media.mp3?tk=eyJ1aWQiOiI3NzA3NTg5Ny02ZGIzLTQ5ZmQtYTliYS0wNmY4Y2Q0YjBkYmQiLCJ0ayI6IjJaY3JxMFh3IiwiYWRzIjpmYWxzZSwic3BvbnMiOmZhbHNlLCJ0IjoiNTUyMTYxIiwic3RhdHVzIjoicHJpdmF0ZSJ9&sig=ydQzZ3VUCEzXEZmoLTptq6cLphRFpFViTENvIq9vqiA) on multiple Israel-Palestine related topics, most notably Hamas' account of their behavior and objectives
3. not-quite-excellent interview with Owen Jones (in-house leftist @ UK's Guardian) who mostly gets current UK politics correct while continuing to avoid confronting how the Starmerists and PLP (Parliamentary Labour) knifed Corbyn et al in their backs, esp the Labour-antisemitism fraud
4. again, good-but-not-great interview with Arnaud Bertrand (who seems to be KB's or KB+SE's French politics guy based on ... vibe? rather like their Ukraine guy ('Igor', IIRC) who seems to have not much expertise beyond living there) on France political economy esp after 7 Jul elections.
Krystal and Saagar discuss Lancet medical journal says 186k killed in Gaza, Hamas leaders reveal Oct 7 true plans, Owen Jones dire warning for Labour after UK elections, French left shocks Le Pen.

The Venezuelan Perspective
Tom RocheEXCELLENT to hear not only from a Chavista, but from a Venezuelan government minister. Unfortunately 'fair and balanced' Anglophone corporate-funded media continuously exclude majority voices, instead platforming deepstate-funded opposition sockpuppets à la Juan Guaidó.
At the end of July, Venezuelans head to the polls to elect a new president, with Nicolás Maduro seeking another six-year term. This week on Deconstructed, Ryan Grim speaks with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto, who was in New York for a U.N. debate on unilateral sanctions. Fresh from visits to China and Russia, where he engaged with BRICS alliance leaders, Pinto discusses Venezuela's bid to join this coalition aimed at countering Western economic dominance. They delve into the impacts of sanctions from the Trump and Biden administrations on Venezuela's economy and migration crisis, and the battle over Citgo, a U.S.-based oil company acquired by the country in 1990. Grim also questions Venezuela's human rights record.

Call Jonathan Pie: General Election Special
Tom RocheAs usual, /Call Jonathan Pie/ is a quick (14 min) mix of amusing rants and oddly-entertaining-though-not-particularly-funny rants. But ya gotta dig rants ...

Irreal: Moving To The Beg/End Of Structures
Tom Rochenote that a comment in [the pointed-to post](https://old.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/1dq852m/dwim_move_to_begend_of_whatever_im_in_the_middle/) points to [combobulate](https://github.com/mickeynp/combobulate), which is a Great Idea
Over at the Emacs subreddit, justsellingmykeeb asks for the best way of moving to the beginning or end of various structures such as regions delimited by some sort of brace or HTML tag. I usually use Ctrl+Meta+f, Ctrl+Meta+b, and, when I remember, expand-region for this but those don’t always do exactly what I want.
There are a lot of good answers in the comments and they’re definitely worth reading if you have the same problem. These range from the simple like expand-region to the more complex like paredit. I like the simpler answers—even though I am a paredit user—because I’m terrible at remembering key shortcuts that I don’t use frequently. Maybe Charles Choi should consider a paredit porcelain.
Regardless of your proclivities, there’s probably a suggestion in the comments that will work for you. Take a look and see.

847 - Spanish Civil War, part 3: No Pasarán! (7/4/24)
Tom RocheVERY EXCELLENT, good to hear Matt even if old
CIVIL WAR! In the cities, fighting between CNT ANARCHIST MILITIAS and government forces breaks out, while NATIONALIST FORCES under General Francisco Franco bring the Army of Northern Africa back to the peninsula. Meanwhile, the arming of the workers leads to SOCIAL REVOLUTION in the Republican Zone, and the CNT and Generalitat enter into a fragile structure of DUAL POWER in Catalonia. Western governments turn their backs on the Republic, as Franco becomes GENERALISSIMO and lays SIEGE TO MADRID. Foreign brigades flock to Spain, while terror bombings culminate in the reduction of GUERNICA. Soon, the CNT must make a critical choice.
Keep your eyes out for more information on ordering Matt’s Spanish Civil War book, coming soon.

Can’t stop your cat from scratching the furniture? Science has some tips
Tom Rocheinteresting article that goes well beyond scratching. E.g., pullquote:
> while too little playtime can adversely affect cat behavior, overstimulation by too much play—or the wrong kind of play—can also have a negative impact. "For cats, structured and routine play is crucial," said Demirbas. "Since play in cats, especially solitary play, originates from hunting behaviors, organized play sessions that mimic hunting are crucial for their well-being. Extended play sessions that do not result in successful hunting or satisfaction (often caused by toys like laser pointers) can induce stress responses due to frustration, overstimulation, and hyperarousal. Similarly, inadequate or lack of play contradicts cats' biology and can lead to distress. The optimal approach involves offering short yet repetitive and successful play sessions. This method mentally and physically stimulates cats, enhances their well-being, and helps prevent undesirable behaviors."
Enlarge / Ariel and Caliban learned as kittens that scratching posts were fair game for their natural claw-sharpening instincts. (credit: Sean Carroll)
Ah, cats. We love our furry feline overlords despite the occasional hairball and their propensity to scratch the furniture to sharpen their claws. The latter is perfectly natural kitty behavior, but overly aggressive scratching is usually perceived as a behavioral problem. Veterinarians frown on taking extreme measures like declawing or even euthanizing such "problematic" cats. But there are alternative science-backed strategies for reducing or redirecting the scratching behavior, according to the authors of a new paper published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
This latest study builds on the group's prior research investigating the effects of synthetic feline facial pheromones on undesirable scratching in cats, according to co-author Yasemin Salgirli Demirbas, a veterinary researcher at Ankara University in Turkey. "From the beginning, our research team agreed that it was essential to explore broader factors that might exacerbate this issue, such as those influencing stress and, consequently, scratching behavior in cats," she told Ars. "What’s new in this study is our focus on the individual, environmental, and social dynamics affecting the level of scratching behavior. This perspective aims to enhance our understanding of how human and animal welfare are interconnected in different scenarios."
The study investigated the behavior of 1,211 cats, with data collected via an online questionnaire completed by the cats' caregivers. The first section collected information about the caregivers, while the second asked about the cats' daily routines, social interactions, environments, behaviors, and temperaments. The third and final section gathered information about the frequency and intensity of undesirable scratching behavior in the cats based on a helpful "scratching index."

7/1/24: NYT Says Biden Drop Out, Kamala Implodes Defending Debate, Biden Donor Revolt, 72% Say Biden Mentally Unfit, Far Right Stuns Macron In French Elections, Glenn Greenwald Sounds Off On Biden Age
Tom RocheIn case you've been wondering what a Saagar-solo show would sound like, we now know: skippable.
SE devotes ~all of his 80-ish minutes (minus a few minutes on the 30 Jun 2024 1st round of French legislative elections) of content (total-with-ads audio length ~= 93 min) not merely just to US politics, not merely to Biden-Trump, but ~all to the Biden-age issue (which is real!) after the 27 Jun 2024 debate. Not only does he entirely ignore the recent SCOTUS decisions (esp [overturning Chevron deference](https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/06/supreme-court-strikes-down-chevron-curtailing-power-of-federal-agencies/)--which are actually a /much/ bigger deal than just CorpDems circling-the-wagons around Biden--but his France analysis was quite poor: French voters did not 'reject compromise politics', because neoliberalism is /not/ a compromise, it's a coherent (though evil) elite ideology. OTOH,

- SE will be soloing all this week (KB, RG, EJ all on vacation) so perhaps he'll "post better numbers" next 3 episodes.
Saagar discusses Morning Joe flips on Biden campaign, Kamala collapses defending Biden debate, Biden donors revolt, Pod Save bros fall in line, White House covers up old man moments, 72% say Biden not cognitively capable of being President, far right stuns Macron in French elections, and Glenn Greenwald sounds off on Biden age.

6/29/24: Dave Smith VS Vaush: Did NATO Expansion Push Ukraine Invasion?
Tom RocheMostly, I very much like CounterPoints, even more than BreakingPoints. But the debates that RG and EJ have started doing lately generally lose. They're doing serious topics (mostly), but (with one exception that comes to mind) these debates have platformed middlebrows to do midlevel arguments. (The one exception that comes to mind is Greenwald vs Ilya Shapiro (rel 5 May 2024), but even that had a mid (Shapiro) debating a respectable intellect.)
I quit listening to /this/ debate after the 1st 10 minutes, because it was plainly adhering to this predetermined pattern (Smith and Vaush are both plainly mids) and I didn't want to waste the remaining > 60 min.

This week: in Palestine/Israel, a grim Save the Children report on Gaza (0:30), Netanyahu again rebuffs a ceasefire and suggests a new phase of the operation (2:41), a new court ruling on ultra-Orthodox Jews’ conscription (7:14), and Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich again pushes West Bank annexation (10:17); Lebanon is still on edge as the US—while hosting Israeli minister of defence Yoav Gallant—warns Hezbollah that it will not stop Israel from attacking (13:00); a preview of Friday’s presidential election in Iran (17:06); a disputed weapons test in the DPRK/North Korea (20:50); rumblings of an imminent coup in Burkina Faso (22:38); widespread protests break out in Kenya, leading President Ruto to back off of the controversial tax legislation (26:28); deadly attacks in Dagestan (29:47); the espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich begins in Russia (32:02); a failed coup attempt in Bolivia (33:16); Kenyan police arrive in Haiti to face armed groups (36:23); and Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the United States (38:27).
6/28/24: Presidential Debate Reaction: Panel STUNNED By Senile Biden
Tom Roche(presumably) EXCELLENT analysis of the 27 Jun 2024 Biden-Trump debate (which I didn't watch, but I have seen excerpts and other coverage), particularly its implications for the corrupt elites of the US "Democratic Party" (aka the CorpDems). KB+SE+RG (EJ only enters near end) seem to believe (though not strongly) that even the CorpDems will not only realize need to replace Biden but will actually do it (presumably Obama will "step in" à la the CorpDem's 2020 'anybody but Bernie' intervention); I dunno.
Krystal, Saagar, Ryan, and Emily react to the first presidential debate of 2024 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
