Prof. John Mearsheimer On Israel, Iran, Lebanon, and Widening War in the Middle East

Tom Roche

another EXCELLENT Mearsheimer interview, and not just (though mostly) about the Zionist wars in southwest Asia; there is also a brief update on how US-NATO is losing its proxy war in Ukraine. The JM interview starts @ 14:57-77:32 (nearly the end of the audio, just before Greenwald's usual outro promotions), and is preceded by some ads to 5:39 in the audio, then GG does commentary to 12:56, then GG does a brief ad-read before the JM interview.

TIMESTAMPS:

Intro (0:15)

Massive Escalation in the Middle East (4:39)

Interview with Professor John Mearsheimer (13:57)

Outro (1:16:35)

The downfall of the Maharajas

Tom Roche

interesting listen

When India gained its independence, the rulers of the princely states - the Maharajas - had to be convinced to give up control of their territories to create the nation of India. It was a difficult negotiation for Lord Mountbatten as each prince wanted something different in return for giving up land, power and armies.

Guest: John Zubrzycki, former diplomat and author of Dethroned: the downfall of India's princely states (Hurst/NewSouth)

Read the article: iCAS 2024 Symposium engages the international community

Tom Roche

see the [Figshare](https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.7439641.v2) or the still-preliminary (despite the event having ended 12 Sep) [agenda](https://www.cisl.ucar.edu/events/561/agenda) for the 2024 International Computing in the Atmospheric Sciences Symposium

In September, nearly 50 attendees from 10 countries came together in Stresa, Italy, for the 2024 International Computing in the Atmospheric Sciences Symposium (iCAS 2024). Participants discussed interdisciplinary and international collaboration for advancing Earth system science.

iCAS 2024 presentations are being assembled in a Figshare collection.

NSF NCAR’s Thomas Hauser, director of the Computational and Information Systems Lab (CISL), said the event was a chance to discuss how advances could “facilitate scientific discovery and meet societal needs,” and that it would “help inform NSF NCAR's computational science strategy in the next strategic plan.”

Organizers wish to thank industry partners NVIDIA, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and the Alliance Technology Group.

The Greens aren't too green

by The Späti Boys
Tom Roche

Ciarán+Uma mostly just (amusingly) bant in this one, but there is some good/serious analysis on topics including

* Soviet watches
* shopping in Berlin
* new/2024 hagiographic/biopic Reagan movie, ...
* ... and how Ronnie fits into US-NATO mythology about the Fall of Communism
* Barcelona vs tourism
* Mountbatten pedophilia, its/his connections to UK elites (esp royals) and how latter covered it up
* connections between Trump not-quite-shooter Routh and Elon Musk, NAFO/Ukraine, etc
* Israel-Hungary connections in the pager-sabotage terror attack on Lebanon
* how German Green party is crumbling politically, after years of failing their electorate and Germany

Uma and Ciarán talk about the previous week which to be fair was nuts. We had to split this in two so part 2 will be up on Patreon soon. Also we talked about the new Reagan movie.

Sorry about the late upload, I have no wifi while in Berlin so I'm in a coworking space where someone doesn't seem to know their headphones aren't connected and they're listening to a passionate speech about the US moving to the gold standard out loud. Send help.

Democratizing the Courts: Mexico's Judicial Reform

by Soberanía Podcast
Tom Roche

EXCELLENT deepdive on (esp the unhinged rightwing opposition to) AMLO/Sheinbaum/Morena's constitutional reform

Soberanía takes a deep dive into Morena’s Judicial Reform. Co-hosts José Luis Granados Ceja and Kurt Hackbarth start by providing an overview of what the constitutional reform actually intends to accomplish. We also talk about the unhinged response by some members of the opposition to the push to approve the reform; as well as a response to the Washington Post by two of Claudia Sheinbaum’s incoming cabinet members. Plus, Supreme Court President Norma Piña finally leaves the comfort of her office and joins the protests (for about 5 minutes). In our Losers and Haters section: the Mexican Winter Palace has fallen and the Bolsheviks led by Marxist-Leninist Sheinbaum threaten to destroy bourgeois democracy!

Rise of the Machine

by The Lever
Tom Roche

MP7 is VERY EXCELLENT as usual

After a series of setbacks in the push to legalize corruption, the master planners know they must take over the U.S. Supreme Court and halt the trend of Republican-appointed justices siding with campaign finance reformers. So in the early 2000s, they deploy their new judicial machine in an epic battle to try to permanently change the courts from the bottom up. This is part one of a two-part story about how the Roberts Court was built.

Randy Feltface's Destruction Manual

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT: very funny/bitter climate humor. This 1st episode (mostly centered around a joke-infested, pseudo-debate-style mock panel show) bodes well for the [series](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00236xp/episodes/guide)

Randy Feltface is done with us ruining the earth beneath our feet whether we’re digging it up, setting fire to it, or tipping it into the sea so with the help of an irritable duck, a fictional French coal miner and a sexy earthworm he works out the best way to just get the whole destruction business over and done with.

This head-on charge into possibly the most important subject facing humanity comes to you via a show where you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll learn, you’ll laugh again between the learny bits and most of all, you’ll be able to say “I was there when Radio 4 decided to have a show hosted by a puppet”.

The full series is available now. Just search 'Randy Feltface's Destruction Manual' on BBC Sounds.

Randy Feltface has been seen on Netflix, ABC, NBC, and has a huge & devoted following across the globe (1m+ social media followers, 1.6m TikTok followers, 833k subscribers, 79m YouTube views). Israel Launches War On Lebanon & Kills Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah. What Next? w/ Elijah Magnier

Tom Roche

EXCELLENT live/untruncated interview with the always-insightful Elijah Magnier. Main takeaway: IDF ground invasion is the main event, everything previous (or just else, if they chicken out) is mostly noise

Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and carpet bombing attacks on Lebanon have shocked the region and the world. What comes next?

To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek is joined by veteran war correspondent and analyst Elijah Magnier for a special live episode of Dispatches.

The Maverick

by The Lever
Tom Roche

another VERY EXCELLENT episode from this singular 10-main-part series

When five U.S. senators get caught pressuring a regulator on behalf of a financial magnate, they become known as the “Keating Five.” The public is predictably outraged. But what no one expects is that one of those senators will learn from his mistakes and become the staunchest campaign finance reformer in decades.

Israel’s Aggression On Palestine & Zionism’s Relationship to Judaism, w/ Zachary Foster

Tom Roche

excellent but truncated

What’s the history of Israel’s genocidal ambitions and the indoctrination that it requires in the Jewish community? Is Zionism really about protecting Jews or does it actually pose a danger to them? What’s the history of Gaza, Hamas and the timeline of Israel’s violence against them? To discuss this and more Rania Khalek was joined by Zachary Foster, a historian of Palestine.

Ukraine is "sitting on a trillion dollars worth of minerals that could be good to our economy", said US Senator Lindsey Graham as he stood next to Zelensky in Kiev. Tom Roche

consistently VERY EXCELLENT (except for all the ads), especially

* 3rd-ish segment (should've kept count, but there was IIRC an exceptional number of "commercial breaks," and therefore segments, in this CounterPoints) on Dana Nessel's slander of Rashida Tlaib and its amplification by Jake Tapper, Dana Bash, and the Whole Sick Crew @ CNN, followed by their pathetically bad-faith attempts at walkback
* penultimate segment (6th? 7th? anyway, second to last) on potential upcoming US port strike and probably Biden-regime response
