Economics professor Rob Larson joins Bad Faith to discuss how the ruling class have turned an ostensible Democracy into an oligarchy, and what to do about it. How unequal are America and the world really, and will anything short of expropriation cure a system so broken, that at least one American has taken to vigilante justice?

Irreal: Reading Email With Emacs

by jcs
Tom Roche

[long thread on reddit=Emacs](https://old.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/1h66cbh/email_providers_that_still_work_reasonably_with/) (archived [here](https://archive.today/mQIza)) (plus [shorter Mastodon thread](https://fedia.social/notes/a17rhrismxz689xp) archived [here](https://archive.ph/sjdKN)) on interfacing Emacs with external mail providers inc Gmail, Fastmail, Migadu, Office365/Outlook, MxRoute, Zoho

As most of you know, we here at the Irreal bunker try to use Emacs for as much as we can. That includes, of course, email. I use the excellent mu4e for that and communicate with my email provider with mbsync. But my situation is easy. All my email funnels through my Apple account and I have no problem communicating with their mail server.

Others aren’t so lucky. They use Gmail or need to interface with Outlook because of work. It’s possible to get Mbsync or something similar working in those cases but it’s not, apparently, easy. Part of that is the increasing security measures that Google and Microsoft keep adding to their email systems and, probably, some of it is about user lock in.

Over at the Emacs subreddit, ttlaxia asks if there are any email providers that still work with Emacs. If you’re having the same problem, you should take a look at the answers. Some of them answer ttlaxia’s question directly and suggest email providers that simply support imap and make it easy to download your email.

Others answer the implied question: how do I get an Emacs email reader to work with Gmail or (possibly) Outlook? There are, it turns out, several good answers to that question so if you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of having to use Gmail or Outlook and would like to read your email with Emacs, take a look at the post. There’s a lot of good information especially for Gmail users

The Civil and Proxy War Reignites in Syria

by Jeremy Scahill
Tom Roche

VERY EXCELLENT deepdive into Zionist proxy war in Syria

Joe Biden has just weeks left in his presidency. Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza is continuing at full force. In Lebanon, the so-called ceasefire was one-sided by U.S. design, meant to require only Hezbollah to cease its fire. A UN peacekeeping force official told CNN Tuesday that Israel had committed roughly 100 violations of the ceasefire, including gradually intensifying military strikes in southern Lebanon. After several days of Israeli attacks, Hezbollah fired back what it said was a warning to Israel. And now Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is saying he is going to escalate even further.

In the midst of all of this, in Syria, armed opposition forces seeking to topple the government of Bashar Al-Assad stunned the region when they marched into Syria’s second largest city, Aleppo, and encountered almost no resistance from the Syrian armed forces or their allies. That operation was led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or the Organization for the Liberation of the Levant, which the U.S. government has classified as a terror organization. HTS has its origins in ISIS and Al Qaeda, though the group’s leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has spent years seeking to rebrand HTS as a national liberation front that is no longer affiliated with either Al Qaeda or ISIS. While the events in Syria unfold against the backdrop of the US-facilitated Israeli wars in Gaza and Lebanon, there are many factors that led to this moment in Syria. On the new episode of Drop Site News's podcast Intercepted, Dr. Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi, a historian who focuses on jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria, joins Jeremy Scahill for a wide-ranging discussion on the unfolding situation.

This is the first in a three-part miniseries on how Mobil Oil VP Herb Schmertz helped pave the way for corporate free speech, linking the Powell Memo to key Supreme Court cases like Bellotti and Citizens United. These efforts in the 1970s set the stage for the climate lawsuits moving through U.S. courts today. Explore the rest of Drilled Season 9 at https://drilled.media/.

Bonus - All Hailbag the Mailbag 9: Executive Letter

Tom Roche

interesting, diverse Q&A, unusual esp personal questions

It's our bi-annual mailbag episode, where Producer Jake presents listener questions to Danny and Derek. Among the topics of this edition: If hierarchy is inevitable in human societies, how does status not based on wealth work? What would a US weapons embargo on Israel look like? Has neoliberal atomization led to a decline in the popularity of bands? What are Derek's bird feeding tips?

Subscribe now for benefits like mailbag submissions, weekly bonus episodes, and our new Discord server!

Speaking of the Discord, listeners have formed a book club that sends the following message:

"PrestigeHeads are organizing a book club for AP subscribers around military historian Donald Stoker’s 2024 book Purpose and Power: U.S. Grand Strategy from the Revolutionary Era to the Present. It will likely be a critical reading given Stoker’s affiliations and ideology, but the book should provide ample fodder for discussion. The plan is to read at most 50 pages a week and have ongoing discussions on the AP Discord for each chapter. We have people on board to read the introduction and first chapter by Friday, December 6th."

The Secret Recordings Netanyahu Wants Censored

by The Lever
Tom Roche

This short (<30 min, minus {intro, ads, outro}) LT episode has its moments, but is ultimately a disappointing visit with one of the "leading" shitlib documentarians of our time, Alex Gibney. (Gibney is only surpassed--or underpassed--by (e.g.) Alexandra Pelosi, about whom hear any of several amusing episodes of [/Michael and Us/](https://soundcloud.com/michael-and-us).) Previous Gibney low points include his [2013 Wikileaks/Assange hitjob 'We Steal Secrets'](http://web.archive.org/web/20211231065444/https://www.truthdig.com/articles/we-steal-secrets-state-agitprop/), which Chris Hedges excellently summarized as 'agitprop for the security and surveillance state.' In his new 'Bibi Files' doc, (producer, not director) Gibney wants to claim (and host Singh lets him tapdance right up to the edge) that Netanyahu is personally liable for (e.g.) Israeli corruption (of which Bibi is a creature--and a /very/ vile creature--but not the cause) and the weaponizing/conflation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism (which has been a top priority for liberal Zionists in US mass-oriented media, like Gibney, for literally decades). For guys like Gibney (and possibly Singh?), it's "rightwing authoritarians" like Netanyahu that Is To Blame, and not the inherent, festering criminality of Zionism (which vomits for Bibi et al) and its long service (even before 1917) to global capitalist empire.

Arjun Singh interviews Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney about The Bibi Files, a new documentary he produced that uncovers explosive new police footage from the corruption trial of increasingly besieged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The podcast comes the same week the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu — and the U.S. Senate voted down a measure to block military aid to Netanyahu’s government.

The conversation touches on the broader implications of Netanyahu’s actions, his role in the Gaza conflict, and how his leadership has contributed to widespread division within Israel. Gibney draws comparisons to other corrupt leaders he’s documented, exploring the psychology behind political misconduct, right-wing authoritarianism, and the lengths some will go to stay in power.

The secret plan to unravel the French submarine deal

Tom Roche

excellent, but a repeat

The ink had barely dried on the deal for the French subs that then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had signed when a group of people behind the scenes started the campaign to get out of it. They had concerns that the subs would not meet the requirements that the Americans had for Australia in their role in the Indo-Pacific. Particularly in relation to China.

888 - Bustin’ Out feat. Moe Tkacik (11/25/24)

Tom Roche

VERY EXCELLENT (funny /and/ informative) interview with Moe Tkacik @ American Prospect covers many topics (mostly centered on the union of the sets {Florida scum}+{Zionist scum}+{lib scum}+{Trump scum}+{billionaire scum}), including

* healthcare fraud in Florida, esp Matt Gaetz family and Pam Bondi
* Trump scum esp Linda McMahon and Pam Bondi (Hegseth gets mentioned but dropped)
* MeToo Zionists esp Jeffrey Epstein, Leslie Wexner, and the cesspool that is {Apollo Global Management, Leon Black, Marc Rowan}
* billionaire crackdown on anti-Zionist protest, esp Penn (i.e., University of Pennsylvania), and even more the {Wharton, Marc Rowan, Josh Shapiro} dunghill
* shitlibs project onto Trump their hatred for anti-CorpDem "traitors," inc defectors from traditionally-Democrat groups, but esp anti-Zionists
* new 'Bibi Files' documentary leaks hilarious interrogation footage from Netanyahu corruption investigation
* private equity looting US hospitals, esp {Cerberus, Steward, Ralph de la Torre} and bankruptcy bustouts
* US federal bankruptcy court in Southern District of Texas as America's most corrupt

Journalist Moe Tkacik joins us to look at a number of issues she’s reported on recently. Starting with the alarming prevalence of sexual assault allegations among Trump’s new cabinet picks, we follow the trail of backlash to accountability among the ultra-rich to College campuses and of course, Israel. We then turn to Moe’s reporting on the growing tumor of private equity in the American healthcare industry, and how these financial barons are gutting our already threadbare hospital system.

Still not as good as S25E1, but consistently amusing with some standout moments. DR's Musk and Trump continue to be EXCELLENT, but this episode's standout (IMHO) is a /devastating/ Kamala (21:46-23:10 in the audio)

Donald Trump makes some surprising new additions to his team, there’s an unexpected guest at COP29, Nigel Farage accepts that climate change is real, and Justin Welby explains the real reason for his resignation.

Best Medicine

Tom Roche

/science/ comedy is one area where, IMHO, BBC Radio 4 does /not/ excel, and this ep is also skippable

Joining Kiri Pritchard-McLean this week is comedian Daliso Chaponda who champions Denial as the best medicine (or does he?). Urology Consultant Mr Bob Yang explains how a pineapple-flavoured UTI vaccine is changing lives, Dr Dana Damian takes Kiri on a journey through the body with tiny swallowable Origami Surgical Robots, and paramedic Thomas Martin teaches Kiri how to stay alive with Defibrillators.

And the panel hear from David, one of the few people in the world who can claim he was brought back from clinical death with a defibrillator - and has also watched the whole incident on video.

Best Medicine is your weekly dose of laughter, hope and incredible medicine. Award-winning comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean is joined by a funny and fascinating panel of comedians, doctors, scientists, and historians to celebrate medicine’s inspiring past, present and future.

Each week Kiri challenges a panel of medical experts and a comedian to make a case for what they think is 'the best medicine', and each guest champions anything from world-changing science or an obscure invention, to an every-day treatment, an uplifting worldview, an unsung hero or a futuristic cure.

Whether it’s origami surgical robots, life-changing pineapple UTI vaccines, Victorian scandal mags, denial, sleep, tiny beating organoid hearts, lifesaving stem cell transplants, gold poo donors or even crying - it’s always something worth celebrating.

Tom Roche

After some (apparently obligatory) banter (Warhol legacy, and the Paul-Tyson "fight"), Will and Luke deliver another EXCELLENT (and funny) demolition of yet another entry in the canon of America's definitely-not-greatest living documentarian, Alexandra Pelosi.

With America suddenly lurching to the right on immigration, we checked to see where one prominent Democrat documentarian stood circa 2011. In CITIZEN USA: A 50 STATE ROAD TRIP (2011), our old friend Alexandra Pelosi travels to all 50 states, flattening all of them into the same paste. PLUS: Andy Warhol, Paul/Tyson, and the real legacy of Obama's 2008 campaign. Irreal: Some Configuration To Solve Common Problems

by jcs
Tom Roche

as title suggests, just a list of config settings with very brief descriptions. archived [here](http://web.archive.org/web/20241122183155/https://olddeuteronomy.github.io/post/some-excerpts-from-my-emacs-config/)

Remember how, when you first started using Emacs, there were all those strange defaults that just didn’t seem right. The worst one, for me, was scrolling. I hated the way the screen would jump when you got near the top or bottom. That feature alone caused me to abandon Emacs more than once.

Of course, like everything in Emacs, that’s configurable but it’s hard for n00bs to know what to do about such things. Sooner or later we all discovered the magic spells to get things more to our liking.

Over at The Emacs Cat, there’s a nice post that shows how to configure things in what many of us consider a saner way. Decent scrolling is covered as is making Emacs Emacs talk UTF-8 exclusively. Both of those took me a long time and a lot of experimentation to get right.

There’s also a section on getting rid of the common annoyances such as having to type “yes” instead of simply “y”, making tabs sane, getting rid of the bell and tool bar, and—for those of you who love controversy—ending sentences with a period and single space.

There’s also a section on some useful modes that you can enable, such as winner-mode, global-hl-line-mode, desktop-save-mode, and help-window-select. I didn’t know about that last one but I’ve frequently been annoyed that I have to switch over to the Help window so it seems useful.

There are a few more useful tweaks that you may or may not want. I found it surprising how closely Emacs Cat’s choices echoed mine. We don’t agree on everything but it’s surprising how much we do agree on. In any event, take a look and see if there’s an answer to a problem you’re having.

How Democrats Can Win Back The Working Class

by Arjun Singh
Tom Roche

Arjun Singh's interview of Krystal Ball is quite good, but nothing a /BreakingPoints/ listener hasn't heard many times. OTOH, David Sirota's interview (20:35-55:10) of Jeff Weaver (chief advisor for both Bernie Sanders' presidential campaigns) is VERY EXCELLENT.

Donald Trump easily won reelection with the help of voters who were once considered bedrocks of the Democratic base. In this election, the former president managed to win over more working-class voters than in his 2016 campaign and made historic inroads with nonwhite voters. Why did this happen — and how can Democrats win them back?

Today on Lever Time, senior podcast producer Arjun Singh sits down with political analyst Krystal Ball, host of the show Breaking Points, to discuss why Trump’s authoritarian, populist rhetoric may have struck a chord with voters. Then David Sirota speaks with Jeff Weaver, architect of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) two presidential runs, to hear how Sanders built a similar multiracial coalition of working class voters during his campaigns and why those voters may have now migrated to Trump.
