One-off Lamborghini Pregunta concept car offered for sale at $2.1 million

by Wrik Sen

Recently, the one-off Lamborghini Veneno sold out within a short time of it’s launch coinciding with the company’s 50th anniversary and became one of the world’s most expensive cars at $3.9 million. And now another one-off Lamborghini goes up for sale. This time around, the 1998 Lamborghini Pregunta concept car is going up for sale, with a price tag of $2.1 million. The one-off car from the Lamborghini was created by Carrosserie Heuliez-Torino, which is known to be a specialist in creating exotic editions of luxury car brands. The Pregunta was created out of the Diablo V-12 model in 1998, just a month before Lamborghini was sold to Audi VW that year. However, that did nothing to dent this special car’s reputation, and in the following months became a major highlight during the Salon de Paris 1998 and Geneva Motor Show 1999. Hence, the car collectors can now get into action quickly so that they grab this one-off marvel, before someone else gets to keep it in their collection.

The year 1998 was a highly tumulus year for Lamborghini, has it was undergoing a phase for change of ownership, which ultimately stopped at Audi VW. Now before this sale happened in July 1998, a month before, the team at Lamborghini and the Italian division of the French car modifier Carrosserie Heuliez-Torino come into a contract agreement, whereby the later entity would receive a Diablo V-12 car meant to be crafted into something unique in design, and a standout against any competitor in the crowd. Hopefully it turned successful and manifested itself in the Pregunta, now going up for sale. The one-off model was bought over by Autodrome, another French firm who will be supervising the sale.

Under the hood, there is a V-12 530HP engine, which took the top speed of the vehicle to 333 kmph, and took barely 20 seconds to clock 100 kmph from a standstill position. Unlike the all-wheel drive in the Diablo, the Pregunta was give a rare-wheel drive train to show its prowess on the road. Other changes include the new positioning of the radiators towards the front end, and the ‘closed-convertible’ theme of the half-roofs on top the of the car.

The source of inspiration of the car, has been the Dassault Rafale fighter jet, and a lot of it’s designed has been used in the car. The external stealth paintwork is the same as the aircraft, apart from the redesigned air intake system, fully electronic F1 type Marelli instruments, Schrott safety belt harness, fiber optic lighting system, rear view camera, CDI, Cristine GPS system, and the combat aircraft cockpit design.

What strikes the automobile design geek the most about this one-off piece from Lamborghini, is the aggressive shaping of the rear end of the vehicle. The engine lid is a occupies a vast space, but doesn’t poke out due to the aerodynamic shaping of the lid. Since this vehicle was trusted to be a beast on the road, or rather a ‘Hyper Lamborghini’, the curves seen here are totally suited for gliding on the road, instead of just driving. The holes or perforations as it seems, include the rear lighting, and the exhaust pipe to throw out the waste gases from the powerful engine. After all the aim seemed to be ‘questioning’ (’Pregunta’ meaning ‘questioning’ in Spanish) the norms of what Lamborghini designed till now.

For those of you who have taken an interest in special editions such as these from the top brass of luxury cars, you could definitely find the likes of 1957 Ferrari 250TR Prototype, the 1964 Pontiac XP833, and the Ferrari Enzo Spyder prototype, which highlights the legacy of special editions from these brands. Designs like these a perfect tickle to the desire of owning these pieces of automobile history, and for some, might even create a passageway into the brain of the designers who created them.

Rare 1913 Liberty Nickel Coin goes up for auction

by Wrik Sen

2013 is well on the way to being declared a year of historic coin auctions, or rather a year of numismatic action so to say. After the recent listing of rare Islamic coins by Morton & Eden, a rare 1913 Liberty nickel is stated to go up for auction. The rare currency which has been graded PR63 by the PCGS, will be put up for a public auction for the first time in over 40 years, when it appears at the Official Auction of the Central States Numismatic Society’s Annual Convention, overseen by Heritage Auctions. The event will be held from April 24th to the 26th, with the special ‘Platinum’ night being held on the 25th. Known to be one of the rarest specimens of US currency ever minted, the Walton specimen coin is known to have one of the dramatic history associated with itself. However, the bidding process has already begun online, and prices are stated to cross $2 million easily.

According to recorded history of this Walton specimen 1913 Liberty nickel coin, George O.Walton was known to have carried this coin with him in 1962, when he was headed for a coin auction then, and due to a tragic car accident, lost his life before reaching the auction venue. From the wreckage at the sight, his 1913 Liberty Nickel was recovered, and returned to the members of his family who then sent it to an auction house for resale. But, luck wasn’t on their side and it was returned to them as being a fake specimen. This let to a majority of collectors believing that one of the only 5 coins of it’s kind, known to be existing is gone forever.

Later in 2003, with the aim of giving the issue greater publicity, an offer for sale of the Liberty Nickel was made. It was then that American Numismatic Association’s World Fair for Money was being held, with the other 4 existing nickel coins. There was also a $10,000 award announced for a person just to be able to see the missing 5th nickel. Then 2 of George O.Walton’s nephews turned up with the coin, and then undergoing a mid-night authentication by coin experts. Since then, the coin has been on display, and for the first time will be seen at a public auction. Perhaps, this will now end up being one of the most expensive coins to be sold at such a forum.

Technogym F1 training machine to train like an racing driver

by Wrik Sen

With the everyday schedule getting tighter and more hectic, getting a trainer within the office or house seems to be the best way out to keep fit and running. Technogym, a name whose Recline Personal Recumbent exercise bike, Jog Now treadmill, Excite Run 700i, or the Kinesis home ‘gold’ gym have all been a part of the fitness regime of the wealthy, have now taken another exciting step in this dimension with their latest equipment inspired by F1 theme . The F1 Technogym training machine, is as much about bringing in fitness and health into your routine, as it is about adding the racing element to the experience of getting fit. With the main focus on 2 main areas of the body, this seems like the latest fad for the F1 fan, who will perhaps spend more time repeating Fernando Alonso or the Felipe Massa health regime.

Most of the exercises on the F1 Technogym, focus on the user’s neck and the forearms, like they would need it on the F1 racing circuit. Through these areas, other parts of the body like the chest, shoulder, and even legs are churned into various movements, that bring in flexibility and give the muscles the necessary exercise. Most of the movements are changeable via the weights which accompany the machine, enabling one to choose the appropriate workload to keep fit. The maximum possible weight is 55-lbs.

For those that may not be aware, the F1 racing demands a lot from the driver physically. Some say, that a driver can loose up to 3 kgs during a full fledged F1 race, due to the extreme heat, and exhaustion which creeps in to move at ultra-high speeds, and that too at odd angles sometime. Alonso and Massa may be the only ones using the machine currently, but henceforth Technogym could be persuaded to launch the F1 trainer in the market, for all fans and geeks alike to keep fit, and get there share of F1 style action.

AGI CERTIFIED ARMORER’S COURSE

by Mike Boyle

img_6770_phatch
The American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) offers a full Certified Law Enforcement Armorer’s Course for officers or budget-strapped agencies that want to be able to maintain an arsenal of weapons

I have had an interest in firearms for most of my life. I own more than a few guns and derive a great deal of enjoyment shooting them. Some of my firearms have seen quite a bit of use and can be compared to a high-mileage automobile. Needless to say, they all require regular maintenance and the occasional repair. Back when I was on the job, the unit I supervised was responsible for keeping a couple hundred handguns, shotguns and rifles in shooting trim.

So where does one acquire this expertise? Instruction manuals provided by the firearms manufacturers at the time of purchase typically include information on routine maintenance and basic field-stripping. Many users and professionals, however, have a need to take this to the next level.

Gunsmith Robert Dunlap takes you through more than just the assembly/disassembly process for a Glock pistol - he covers all the bases

Over my career, I’ve had the good fortune of attending armorer’s schools sponsored by a number of different manufacturers. This training will not turn you into a bona fide gunsmith, but it will get you up to speed on weapon function, assembly/disassembly, troubleshooting and repairs. Depending on the complexity of the weapon systems, these programs usually last between one to five days.

Negligent Discharge / Nasty picture warning!

by gdmoody
I am a member of a Georgia Based forum that is mainly a "Swap Meet" kind of place named The Outdoors Trader. This past Wednesday, one of the members posted a picture of the results of a Negligent Discharge, he accidentally shot himself in the hand with his LCR in .357 using Hornady Critical Defense ammo.

In the initial post, he states that it was time to clean it and that he did not have his finger in the trigger guard or on the trigger. He says he cupped it in his left hand and when he opened the cylinder it went off. He later on admits that he must have pulled the trigger because there was no way for it to just go off.

I will not post a link to another forum here BUT if you want to read the entire thread for yourself, please send me a PM and I will put the link in a return PM, the thread is 40 pages right now (10 posts per page).
