A 50 years old bottle of Macallan Anniversary Scotch sold for $40k

by Wrik Sen

Of all specialty collections in the world, the most intoxicating, almost literally, is the collection of ‘liquid gold’ or rare whisky bottles. Throughout history, some for historic occasions, some for rarity, and some or famous ownership have managed to command premium prices during their sale events. One such brand is Macallan, which has sold some famous bottles like the 1962 James Bond Skyfall, 1926 Macallan bottled in 1986, and also a 50-year old Fine Oak bottle which exchanged hands in the biggest whisky sale a few years back. Now a 1951 edition bottle, for which the whisky was distilled in 1926, has found itself a new collector for a price tag of $40,460 including the the buyer’s premium. At the Bonham’s Whisky, Cognac & Rare Spirits Auction, some other significant labels fetched premium prices, which took the premium up to 91% above the pre-auction estimate.

The star attraction of the lot was the 1951 Bottle of Macallan (750 ml) which commanded the $40,460 price tag. The buyers in the United States showed a very keen interest in the lot and the premium of whiskies and cognacs were actually picked up by them. However, there were some bidders on the online forum from the East Asia, Australia, UK, and even Scandinavia who participated in auction event.

One other significant bottle from the Macallan brand, was the Lalique, which commanded $15,470. The reason other than the rare whisky, is the designing of the Lalique crystal decanter with the driven cork at the top. Makes for ideal placement on one’s showcase.

There was also a bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII Black Pearl, which we had spoken off last year. The cognac inside, certainly one of the finest one would get, is a blend of 1200 eaux de vie between 40 and 100 years-old, and then aged in tiercons ‘ancient oak barrels’. The beverage was then bottled in 800 limited edition handcrafted Baccarat crystal bottles, which will be seen each year. This was one of the rare 800 bottles seen at a public auction. It sold for $21,240 at this auction.

Steve Wozniak Signed Apple 1 computer set for auction

by Wrik Sen

It has been more than 37 years, but the enigma surrounding the founding of Apple Computers still remains. The same can be said for the first product the team made, the Apple 1 computer, which took computing to the masses for the very first time. For that reason we previously witnessed the $640,000 Team Brecker Sale for the Apple 1, and also the Christie’s $213,000 auction of a personal Apple-1 last year. For those looking to get an autographed edition of the computer, a very rare piece is set to hit the auction blaock, with Steve Wozniack’s ‘Woz’ autograph on it. This rare example was built by Wozniack in 1976, and is known to be in working condition. Team Brecker, which saw the record breaking bid last year, says that this one could bring in anything between $261,000 and $392,000 as pre-auction estimate.

Though today Apple makes it’s devices by the millions, the Apple I was produced in a limited edition of just 200 units, out of which only 50 are known to be surviving to this day. Steve Wozniack, who was called ‘Woz’ during the earliest days of Apple, is known to have created the mother board for this one too. His nickname has been autographed on the interior of this fully functional computer. It was known to have been priced $666.66 during this launch years.

Team Brecker Auctioneers in Germany, will also be looking to auction of the letter from Steve Jobs to Fred Hatfield, where he offers the original owner the option to upgrade his computer to a Apple II 4K mother board, for a sum of $400. The 4K meant 4 kilobytes, which was a high volume data capacity during those days. Perhaps these reasons will ensure that the upcoming auction on May 25.

The $7,000 Beach7 AirLounge Inflatable party is good for a gathering for 30 not any pin-pricks

by Wrik Sen

When planning for a party at home, or having guests over just like that, the lounge set has a big role to host your firneds & family to hang out in style. Designs like Bolska and Polskij fireplace lounge, and the Box mobile Lounge Bar which is a total setup for your backyard play a vital role in leading an outgoing lifestyle. Now the $7,000 Beach7 AirLounge XL inflatable party does plenty to make an impression on your guests, and does a whole of good to your party arrangement setup but might not exactly be pin-friendly. The best part of all this is, one can easily fold it away for later use despite the the large inflated size, and it comes with it’s own air pump too!

Beach7 Air Lounge can sit up to 30 adults at the same time
Beach7 Air Lounge can sit up to 30 adults at the same time

The Beach7 AirLounge XL goes from 0 inflation to it’s full bloom in just about 10 minutes. With the help of the 1000W air pump, one will get a central table cum bench where guests can keep their plates of food or simply lounge their feet up in relaxation. The there are the circular chairs which has enough space to fit in 30 adults, or sometimes even more if space is compromised a bit.

Beach7 Air Lounge has a air pump that gets it ready in just 10 minutes

The party lounge is made of reinforced PVC (100D), which is 0.75 mm thick, and measures a total of 108 kgs in weight. The biggest advantage apart from being fold-able is that it does not get affected in the rain or heat, and can steady hold most of the standard weight of trays and the people sitting on it, without causing any discomfort. With the soft round edges, one can always relax with comfort equivalent to a cushioned lounge set up like this. Also, for those that made not have as much wide space, there is a model available for 15 people seating. To sum it up, next time you have a party at home, call them all in, but ask them to not wear pointy heels, as you may never know when it all turns a blot.

Hamilton Beach’s New “Mc” Breakfast Maker

by Julie

There are a few things in my life that are a given, if there is chocolate in front of me, I will eat it, no exercise of any kind is fun, and anything that happens before 10 in the morning probably isn’t worth having to set the alarm for. However, I have a 10 year old that still requires a good breakfast and a ride to school at *gasp*  six-thirty in the morning! Now while I’ve gotten pretty good at driving in my sleep, making breakfast? Not so much.

Well the folks over at Hamilton Beach have the answer to my one of my problems with their new electric Breakfast Sandwich Maker. This nifty little countertop delight makes breakfast making quick and easy. Using your own fresh ingredients, you can whip up your own “Mc” specialties using any combination of eggs, meat, veggies and cheeses with English muffins, biscuits or small bagels and Voila! You have a sandwich that practically builds itself.

All of the Breakfast Sandwich Maker’s removable parts are dishwasher safe, and the cooking surfaces are covered with a durable, nonstick coating. It has a small footprint, preserving some of your valuable countertop real estate, and it’s very simple to learn, so even a child could do it. Hmm… I wonder if 10 years old is too young to make breakfast, while mom gets an extra 10 minutes of sleep? We’ll have to see. The Breakfast Maker comes with some quick and easy recipes to get you started. So if you need a healthy alternative to the drive-thru breakfast, the Hamilton Beach Breakfast Maker may be for you. Get yours today at amazon.com for only around 29 bucks! Me? I’m teaching the kid… and hitting the snooze bar!

Natalia Project is perfect for civil rights activists

by Edwin

There will always be tyranny in this world, and of course, it is up to the rest of the general populace to step up and be responsible in toppling such tyrants, although most of the time, such activists will be at a disadvantage for obvious reasons – they lack the machinery, military might and of course, financial backing to take up so public a cause. Not only that, the risks are high for campaigners, as they could end up beaten, kidnapped or in the very extreme, murdered, whih is why Civil Rights Defenders in Stockholm has rolled out the Natalia Project.

Why the Natalia Project? This particular title was named after Natalia Estemirova, a human rights activist who was abducted and subsequently, murdered, in Chechnya in 2009. The Natalia Project will see the development of an electronic bracelet which will be able to send a pre-programmed text alarm should it be activated or forcibly removed. Not only that, within the bracelet lies a wireless assault alarm system that will hopefully draw immediate attention to any assaults on human rights activists.

Civil Rights Defenders has so far remained rather quiet on the kind of technology that they have packed in the Natalia Project, but this is understandable. We do know, however, that it will use GPS and GSM technology, in addition to the fact that bracelet itself has been programmed with “individual protocols for security.” Apart from the bracelets, the Natalia Project will also encourage folks to sign up using Twitter or Facebook so that they will be on the receiving end of weekly updates on the project, in addition to being part of a global alert network. Civil Rights Defenders has every intention of deploying 30 of such bracelets sometime this year, and want to see up to 55 of these in use by 2014. Unfortunately, only one has been funded to date.

Samsung announces Galaxy Mega smartphones

by Edwin

Samsung, a company that has for the longest time churned out their fair share of consumer electronics for the world in addition to hot selling smartphones, are back this time around with a couple of sizes under the same name – the Samsung Galaxy Mega. They sure as heck were not kidding with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Mega. This particular smartphone is said to come with the portability and convenience of a smartphone, in addition to having the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet. Yes sir, we are referring to the proverbial “best of both worlds” here, where you will be able to choose from 5.8” and 6.3” displays.

Regardless of which screen size you decided to settle on its High Definition LCD display will obviously boast of landscape mode support, which delivers an exceptional widescreen view for a wide range of applications that range from web browsing to video, and SNS. Despite the rather large footprint, you can be sure that the Samsung Galaxy Mega is not going to be heavy on your pockets, since it is touted to be incredibly light and thin, delivering extreme portability and easy, convenient mobile phone use.

There is the ‘Group Play’ mode that enables easy content sharing for up to 8 different devices on the same Wi-Fi network, while ‘Samsung WatchON’ is capable of transforming it into an IR remote controller, letting you enjoy a richer TV experience. ‘Samsung Link’ itself makes life a cinch, as you easily stream photos, videos, notes, or music to your TV, tablet or computer. The presence of ‘S Translator’ delivers instant translation, whether it relies on text or voice translation on different applications including email, and ChatON.

Expect the Galaxy Mega to offer a range of applications such as email, messages, ‘MyFiles,’ ‘S Memo,’ and ‘S Planner’, among others, where it will also sport an 8-megapixel camera at the back and a 1.9-megapixel shooter in front, coupled with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice and a dual core processor. No word on pricing, but the Samsung Galaxy Mega will be available worldwide from next month onwards.

Gold Karat Authenticator

by Edwin

Gold prices have certainly taken a tumble in recent times, which is normally a traditional safe haven for investors to flee to when the rest of the money market is in a mess. Well, I guess life is always a cycle of ups and downs, and the same goes with gold prices, stock value, the works. If you are one who have decided to throw your lot behind gold, you might be interested to pick up the $499.95 Gold Karat Authenticator.

As its name suggests, the Gold Karat Authenticator is a device that is capable of authenticating karat grades of gold. It does so without the need for messy gels, staining chemicals, or dangerous acids that are often employed by other authentication techniques, as the authenticator’s pure gold-tipped electrode is capable of measuring the electromagnetic frequency produced by a tested object using a safe saline solution which in turn functions as an electrolyte. Pure gold will naturally result in zero volts; and its tested karats are indicated immediately by a panel of LEDs, where it displays a range from six to 24 karats. Non-gold, gold plate, or gold-filled objects will be referred to as “NA”.

30 Day Lantern

by Edwin

Do you love the great outdoors? Is camping one of your favorite past times? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, then you might want to check out what Hammacher has in store for you, especially for those who love to prepare for the unexpected. The $59.95 30 Day Lantern should be made a compulsory purchase for just about anyone who would like nothing better than to get away from the concrete jungle and spend their time in the great outdoors, just like how Calvin’s dad does in the comic strips, more often than not being left awash in a downpour.

The 30 Day Lantern is special, because as its name suggests, it is capable of delivering up to 30 days of reliable light, and you will not find Iron Man’s arc reactor powering this puppy, as all that is required is a single set of batteries to get it going. The lantern itself sports a trio of 1.4-watt LEDs that sip but a fraction of the energy required by traditional bulbs, hence enabling it to produce 720 consecutive hours of light on its lowest setting with a mere three D batteries. Talk about being power efficient, no? It even comes with a green LED which will flash whenever the device is turned off so that you can locate it easily in the event of a blackout.

Ted R Rated Talking Plush

by Edwin

Did you watch the movie Ted last year? If you have (and even if you have not, but find this animated teddy bear to be extremely cute although it can be rather obnoxious), then you might want to get the $14.99 Ted R Rated Talking Plush to be part of your comfort toys collection. Sure, this is one dirty bear – in the verbal sense, of course, and is far from cute compared to the Snuggle bear, but it will definitely be a friend for your entire life (as long as its stitches hold up, of course).

The Ted R Rated Talking Plush certainly lives up to its reputation, and will feature 5 phrases from the Ted movie, such as “Yeah, I mean, y-you know when you sewed me up you put some of the stuffing in the wrong places so I’m – I’m a little f—ed up, but will you take care of me for ever and ever?… Aha! I’m just kidding you! I thought it’d be funny if you thought I was f—ing retarded.” to “You ever hear a Boston girl have an orgasm? ‘Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Harder! Harder! Oh, God, that was so good! Now I’m gonna stuff my f—in’ face with Pepperidge Farm.’”, “Well you never should’ve trusted me. I’m on drugs!”, “Alright c’mon, let’s sing the Thunder Song. When you hear the sound of thunder, don’t you get too scared. Just grab your Thunder Buddy and say these magic words: F— you, Thunder! You can suck my d— You can’t get me, Thunder, ’cause you’re just God’s farts.” and “Oh f— that. It’s been 4 years, Johnny! You and me have been together for 27 years. Where’s my ring, huh? Where’s my ring, a——? Where’s my ring, mother f—er? Put it on my fuzzy finger, you f— C’mon!” Ted can talk as long as his trio of AA batteries have juice, of course.

Sceptre CarCam Recorder CCR2000

by Edwin

You can never tell just when an accident is about to happen, which is why such events are knowns as accidents in the first place. When you are behind the wheel, riding a bicycle or a motorcycle, it is imperative that you keep your eyes peeled on the road ahead at all times, as accidents happen in the blink of an eye if you are not careful. Paying full attention would give you the advantage of having the fastest response time possible, and this might eventually end up to be the difference between life and death. Having said that, whenever you are driving, it pays to just leave your smartphone alone, never mind that there is voice dictation capability in recent times. Just to make sure your ride has an additional witness, the Sceptre CarCam Recorder CCR2000 would record whatever is going on in front of you as proof just in case someone in front of you cuts into your lane suddenly without any signal, and claim otherwise.

One would associate the name Sceptre more with LED and LCD HDTVs in addition to PC displays, but it seems that they too, want to get a piece of action in the world of car video recorders, hence rolling out the ultra-compact CarCam Recorder CCR2000. The Sceptre CarCam Recorder CCR2000 comes across as a full-HD 1080P video recorder that was specially developed to capture crystal clear videos from within your ride, making it the ideal tool to capture evidence in case of emergencies. Not only that, during times of leisure and peace, the CCR2000 comes in handy to record record scenic drives. Bet you didn’t think of it that way, eh?

All video will be recorded at 1920×1080 resolution using H.264 video compression technology, where it will get the best view possible thanks to its 120-degree wide angle lens. There is also a built-in HDMI Output for easy viewing on any display and G-Sensory Technology which can detect collisions and automatically locks the footage so that no overwriting occurs. The asking price for the Sceptre CCR2000 would be $399 a pop.

Zombie Head Bowling Balls – Got my Head in the Gutter!

by Julie

Zombies have been around for an awfully long time, but I’m not exactly sure when these guys made it to the “popular” table. Everywhere I look I’m reminded of the pending Zombie apocalypse. So I have food and water saved, a goodly supply of Zombie stopper bullets and am strongly considering a moat around my house… what else can I do?

How about Zombie bowling? Assuming actual zombie heads won’t be readily available in the coming months, I can still satisfy the primal urge to include a beloved zombie in my life with a new Zombie Head Bowling Ball. No longer will I bowl in obscurity, when I arrive with my Zombie Head in hand, the leagues will take notice.

Each of these polyester, high gloss finish balls comes with a disturbingly awesome, extremely detailed zombie depiction, complete with blood, copious amounts of ooze, and vacant staring, as well as neatly marked finger hole placements that are strategically located in, or near, nostrils, eyes or mouths! Very nice.

Easier to deal with than your average zombie head, these gruesome balls come with a 2 year warranty, and are available in sizes 10, 12, 14, 15 and 16… and while I have to admit that I haven’t been bowling since I was 12, I desperately want a Zombie Head Bowling Ball and if you want to add some “life” to your game, check out  amazon.com but please, don’t rent the shoes… cause then you’ll have the feet of the undead too. Prices start around 90 bucks.

Making Handmade Books

by mark

While traditional paper-book publishing declines, personal paper-book making ascends. Books have gone from industrial commodity to precious hand-made artifact. There’s a renaissance of handcrafted book-making by enthusiasts and Alisa Golden has played a key role in documenting and teaching this makers’ art. I have a number of book-making books, and this one by her is by far the most complete and thorough. Her diagrams and instructions are very clear. This hefty how-to manual gives directions for creating over 100 different types of books, book bindings and book-ish things. It incorporates her previous two how-to manual, adds new material and will guide anyone through the process of making a paper book by hand. Even better, it will prompt you to experiment with your own book-making designs.

Clog Hog

by mark

I have a home that has a septic system. Living in MN, this winter was very cold. The pipe from the house to the septic tank froze and water backed up into the house. The plumber wanted $200 just to come out (I am in the middle of nowhere), plus he didn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t have to dig up the yard. My wife found the Clog Hog. It only cost $130. (less than the plumber’s trip.) Compared to the cost of a plumber, I had nothing to lose. The Clog Hog connects to your power washer and uses water to cut through ice and other clogs in pipes. It took me about an hour to get through about 6 ft of ice in the pipes. It didn’t damage the pipes and worked fast. All I needed was patience.
