Instagram Cake

by John Farrier

Brilliant! Ann Reardon made a cake that cuts neatly into the Instagram logo with every slice. She used chocolate mousse and colored jello for the details. At the link, you can find her recipe and a video showing how she made it. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to Instagram this!

Vending Machine Cooks, Then Serves Fresh French Fries in 90 Seconds

by John Farrier

(Photo: Nicolas Maeterlinck/AFP)

Belgians claim to have invented and perfected what we Americans call French fries. Belgians, though, call them frites and cook them in beef fat. They're also now available on demand in Belgium, thanks to a newly-invented vending machine:

Customers pay €2.50 (£2.13) for a 90-second fry-up of a 135g portion of chips accompanied by fork, salt and ketchup or mayonnaise, with or without harissa, but definitely without the customary moules. Three filters are meant to cut out the smell of the frying.

With a few modifications, perhaps we could have a poutine vending machine.

It's Always Sunny In Cross Stitch

by Jill Harness

If you're a fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then you know all about Day Man, the Champion of the Sun. This cross stitch can be purchased from Etsy seller Purple Hippo Stitches, but if you prefer to make your own, you can buy the pattern or kit from them instead.

Chicken

by Wes + Tony

at least they didn't make those really offensive clucking noises

We all have secrets. Only truly weird people don’t have something to hide. In fact, the more secrets the better! Let me explain:

You know what the worst superpower in the world would be? Reading people’s minds. Think about the last time you looked at someone, and catalogue all the thoughts and judgements that crossed your brain. Now imagine they could tap into that stream. That poor person! Let’s all stay in our own heads, as awful places as they may be. Or let’s all stick to thinking about dinosaurs.

Hey Girl by Edison

Oh, Edison. We all know he's a hopeless romantic when he proposed marriage by morse code. That's why the folks at GE put together a few "Hey Girl" pics for the famous inventor. Ryan Gosling, eat your heart out! View more over at Pinterest and Geeks Are Sexy

Having Sibling Trouble? Try Praying to St. Jareth

by Jill Harness

Etsy seller GreaserCreatures sells a selection of great geek prayer candles, but I'm particularly intrigued by this Goblin King design. If I pray to it, do you think he might take away my older sister and turn her into a goblin or does it only work on babies?

Back in February we first explored an ongoing project called Head Like an Orange (previously) by a Netherlands-based artist named Marinus who isolates key segments of nature films, often just a split second in length, and uses the footage to create beatiful, whimsical, and strangely poetic gifs. These are a few of my favorites from the last several months but you can see much more right here.

Walk in the Clouds

by Alex Santoso

Photo: Yasuhiro Takagi

Want to walk in the clouds? Now you can, thanks to Cloudscapes, a collaboration by Japanese studio Tetsuo Kondo Architects and environmental engineering firm Transsolar, located at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

The indoor cloud is created by pumpking three layers of air into the structure: cold dry air at the bottom, humid hot hair in the middle, and hot dry air on top. Visitors can then immerse themselves in the clouds that form in the middle layer.

Photo: Yasuhiro Takagi

"The temperature and humidity inside the container are controlled to keep the clouds at their desired height," The project stated, "The edges of the clouds are sharp yet soft, and always in motion. Their colour, density and brightness are constantly changing in tune with the weather and time of day."

The Tokyo installation is actually the second Cloudscapes that Tetsuo Kondo and Transsolar had created. Their first, located in Venice, Italy in 2010, was created for the 12th International Architecture Exhibition.

Image Formed by Thousands of Potted Plants on a Staircase

by John Farrier

(Photo: Andrea Annaloro)

Every year, residents of Caltagirone, Italy honor the patron saint of the city with the Scala Flower Festival. They arrange potted plants on a grand staircase in that city to form composite images, such as these flowers made of flowers. You can see more photos at the link.

Meanwhile, in Alaska: A Bear Riding a Sea-Doo

by John Farrier

(Photo: Morrison Guide Service)

Graham Morrison spotted a young bear crawling on a jet ski near the base of his fishing guide business in southwestern Alaska:

Morrison said that the young bear climbed onto the watercraft in order to get closer to its mother, who was sitting in the water dining on her catch. At one point, it climbed to the end of the craft and growled at her, in an apparent effort to convince her to give up some of the meal. Then, the young bear fell in before attempting to climb back up on the craft. Morrison said that the Sea Doo -- docked at a family boat dock about a mile from the King Salmon airport -- was unharmed during the bear encounter.

Beware the Watermelon Boy

by Jill Harness

We feature a lot of baby cosplay here, but for those on a budget, you can still have fun with baby costumes. Just take a great summer fruit, carve it up and slide it on. Voila, you have the watermelon knight.

MyScriptFont

by mark

I’ve long wanted a font based on my own hand. The easiest, cheapest and quickest way is MyScriptFont. To get my personal script, I wrote out an alphabet on their printed-out template (block letters only, no cursive), scanned the sheet and uploaded it, and then installed the scaleable font they handed back. It’s free. Takes only minutes.

Once I had my handprinting font, I figured I could quickly make other homemade fonts. It’s a quick cheap way to make any kind of unique hand-drawn font you want.

The First Tour de France

by Miss Cellania

The 2012 Tour de France is the 100th such race, as it began in 1903 and was skipped during the World War I and II years. The origin of the race is an interesting story, involving anti-semitism, treason, and journalistic squabbling. The Public Domain Review has pictures of the event, including this one from the finish line. The winner, Maurice Garin, is the one man smiling. Link -via Nag on the Lake

The Library Bench

by John Farrier

Depending on your perspective, Chat Travieso's bench says 'library' in either English, Chinese or Spanish. He calls his little library in New York City, which is open to the public, "Word Play." Travieso hopes it will bring members of the diverse community around it together to share in the joy of reading.

This Cake is Sure to Make You Slothful

by Jill Harness

We at Neatorama are of the opinion that pretty much anything sloth-related is adorable, but this cake might be an exception given those horrorific vampire teeth and the fact that he's urging a bunch of strawberry chicks to sacrifice one of their own to the devil.
