How to Get the Most Entertainment for Your Video Gaming Dollar

by Scott Meyer
Natalie.ayerdis

That third panel, so true! Guitar players are the worst. Especially classical guitar players. They are so high maintenance, and they contribute nothing to society.

I’m currently playing the latest Hitman game, which is really good if you’re into that kind of thing, which I am. I like to think of Hitman as a more humane, moral, violent videogame, because instead of killing everyone I see, in Hitman, I only kill the specific person or people I’m being paid to kill.

I said that I like to think it’s more humane and moral, not that it actually is.

How to Pick a New Razor

by Scott Meyer
Natalie.ayerdis

Stalemate! Now you must arm wrestle.

This comic actually got quite a bit of traction when it came out. So much, in fact, that I was asked by the manufacturers to review two razors. One by King of Shaves, and one called The Goodfella.

The one by King of Shaves was probably the best disposable I ever used, but looked disturbingly like a vegetable peeler

I still have The Goodfella, and use to clean up edges on occasion. As I wrote at the time, it’s metal with no moving parts. There’s no reason it won’t still work in 200 years.

For my daily shaving these days I use a Panasonic electric. It is by far the best electric razor I’ve found. I use it on my face and my head, and shaves as close as a blade. Just sayin’.

How to Decide Which Star Wars Character You Are Most Like

by Scott Meyer

Obi Wan was the worst Jedi of all time.

His mentor ditched him for a kid.

He watched, helpless, stuck behind a force field as that mentor was killed.

He took over training the kid, Anakin, who kept sassing back and disobeying him.

He was ordered to capture Jango Fett. Fett got away.

He watched, helpless, pinned under debris as Count Dooku cut off Anakin’s hand. Yoda had to save them both.

He got knocked out and didn’t see the future emperor goading Anakin into executing Count Dooku. Anakin then saved Obi Wan by carrying his unconscious bulk.

Anakin, his Padawan, who he chose to train over Yoda’s objections, turned evil and wiped the Jedi out.

He goes to kill Anakin. He chooses to leave him alive, but angry.

He goes to Tatooine to “watch over” Luke.

He finds Luke unconscious after he’s been attacked.

He keeps Luke busy talking about light sabers and Imperial troop blast patterns while Luke’s aunt and uncle, who raised him, are being burned to death.

He travels to Alderaan as quickly as he can, and arrives right after the planet has been destroyed.

He drops the Death Star’s tractor beam, but gets Killed by Darth Vader, A.K.A. Anakin, A.K.A. the kid he trained.

He tells Vader, “Strike me down and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.” Vader strikes him down. Obi Wan spends the next two movies demonstrating his new powers Vader couldn’t imagine: the power to talk and emit a faint blue glow.

Note from Missy: Hey, at least he got that tractor beam down.

Geeky Nintendo, Star Wars & Star Trek Garb For Summer

by Tom Pinchuk
Natalie.ayerdis

Those shoes are incredible.

Summer’s here. We’re advancing to another “level” of 2016. Some new, geeky threads could definitely be in order. And gee–look at this. Vans just debuted a new line of Nintendo-themed apparel.

It’s got everything, from canvas shoes and tube socks to baseball caps and backpacks; all styled with art from Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt and even the old school NES. Putting patterns of Princess Peach on a pair of kicks might bring cuteness to a critical mass, but the “stealth geekery” of the Duck Hunt pack seems the more clever find. Unless any knowledgeable retro gamer takes a closer look, it’s proper camo for a rugged outdoor expedition as far as everyone is concerned.

Vans Nintendo 1 Vans Nintendo 2 Vans Nintendo 3 Vans Nintendo 4 Vans Nintendo 5 Vans Nintendo 6

Perhaps your personal style fits the Mushroom Kingdom less than a galaxy far, far away, though? Star Wars apparel might be easy to come by–Kohl’s basically has a whole department for it–but top shelf SW shoes like the ones Irregular Choice is offering are a bit rarer. Embodying the saga’s heroes and villains through abstract choices of fabric, texture, and of course, sparkles is certainly cool; but what’s far more intriguing here is the reinvention of the very concept of a heel. The Jedi shoes might very well be able to slice some arms off. And how much more stalwart will Artoo and Yoda look, carrying the weight of your fun night out upon their shoulders?

IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 1 IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 2 IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 3 IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 4 IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 5 IRREGULAR CHOICE STAR WARS 6
If practicality is more your (warp?) speed, you’ll be leaning toward Star Trek, anyway. Think Geek has brought military rank and regiment to casual wear, organizing swimsuits, socks, underwear, et al, with Starfleet’s color-coded science/command/engineering classifications. Granted, blue, red, or gold are limited options for style, but at least your choice out of the three will say much about your personality and skill set?
ThinkGeek Star Trek 6 ThinkGeek Star Trek 4 ThinkGeek Star Trek 2 ThinkGeek Star Trek 1 ThinkGeek Star Trek 3 ThinkGeek Star Trek 5
Are any of these items just screaming to join your wardrobe? What other lines of “geek garb” are worth considering this summer? Kindly drop all suggestions into the talkback.

Fun with Tesla's Autopilot Mode

Natalie.ayerdis

That's the dream.

While on a road trip, Michael Woolson and his wife demonstrate some of the fun activities you can do while using Tesla's autopilot."This 'road trip' is meant as a parody only and was filmed in a Tesla Model X with the autopilot feature on, which prompts a warning sound if the driver needs to put his or her hands on the wheel. Please know that for the safety of others, as well as ourselves, safety precautions were implemented (including carefully planned routes during light traffic times, and all takes were limited to a few seconds in length)."..(Read...)

How to Prioritize Your Friends

by Scott Meyer

I’m not a sports fan, but I do enjoy going to a game occasionally. Something about being around that many people who are into something is infectious. You find yourself getting caught up in the emotion of the crowd. Pretty soon, things that couldn’t be less important to you seem like the most important thing in the world.

It can be a lot of fun, but that’s also how riots happen.

I kid. I’m not really saying that sports fandom is a form of mass hysteria, but that would explain why otherwise rational people will spend that much money on an order of extra-soggy nachos.

The Vanual Camping Van

Natalie.ayerdis

Pretty cool and definitely beats a tent and cot.

Filmmaker Zach Both converted this cargo van into an amazing living space/work studio. The van, is nearly ten years old and was purchased off Craigslist, looks like just another ordinary cargo van. It also features recycled wood from an old church. Also, the van is equipped with wifi, and solar panels to help keep everything charged and the panels were modified into chalkboards so note taking and storyboarding doesn’t have to leave the office. How to Recognize a Bad Idea

by Scott Meyer
Natalie.ayerdis

We don't like your smoking jacket either. So good.

I own a couple of luchador masks. One is just a random design while the other is a replica of the mask worn by Santo. I got my first one back when they were a difficult thing to find and a relatively bizarre thing for an un-athletic white guy who doesn’t like wrestling to own. The irony of it amused me.

Later, thanks to various pop culture figures, owning a Luchador mask became a little more common. When that happened, the masks got packed up and have not seen the light of day since.

In a weird way, deliberately doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing is in its own way a form of being a follower. I understand this. But, at least I’m making an active decision as to what kind of follower I am.

Make a Splash This Summer With These Girly Geek Swimsuits

by Courtney Kraft
Natalie.ayerdis

Some super cool stuff here.

Winter is coming. No wait, that’s Westeros.

This is North America, so summer is coming. That means conventions, barbecues, blockbuster movies, and of course swimming. I’m tired of wearing the same black and white tankini I’ve worn for the last few years. You know what? It’s time for a new look. Time for something that expresses who I am in a swimsuit. It’s time for something geeky!

I’ve gathered some super fun swimwear that will make you feel amazing no matter what your body type. I seriously don’t mind a little flab showing as long as I get to wear that delightful looking Batgirl swimsuit from Black Milk Clothing. I will gleefully jump into a public pool yelling, “I’M BATGIRL!” if my swimsuit has a detachable a cape. And if my boyfriend doesn’t point me out to strangers because he’s so proud of my personal style, well then I guess I’ll just have to find a new boyfriend.

Check out the gallery below for inspiration and where to find some of these creative looks. I’ve discovered that tracking down specific suits can be a little daunting, but with strong Google skills and a good amount of determination, you can find something that’s just right for you.

Be sure to share your favorite finds with us in the comments. Happy swimming!

Peer Behind the Curtain of How Board Games Are Made

by Teri Litorco
Natalie.ayerdis

That first picture is actually a picture of Tom and Molly's house.

What happens when the makers of our favourite games put up videos on how to make them? The answer is simple: we watch in awe. We’ve dug up a couple of fascinating videos on how board games are made.

Ludo Fact’s production facility in Europe (the largest game production facility in Europe) makes a lot of fascinating things you know and love. The detailed video shows the entire process of how something gets made, from the designers and producers scoping out the cost, all the way to warehousing and distribution. The level of detail involved in Ludo Fact’s production is shockingly incredible. I mean, behold their sample room, where they keep a sample from every production run of every game they’ve made.

There really is no better way to sum up it up other than LIFE GOALS.

sampleroom

Mayday Games also lifted the curtain on their production facilities. While less sophisticated than Ludo Fact, there’s something rather satisfying about watching someone feed every Smash Up! lid into a notching machine.

notches

What’s especially interesting is seeing side-by-side comparisons of the same aspects of production. Some aspects (like cutting of cards and components) are substantially different due to automation.

makingboxessidebyside

At the same time, when it comes to assembling the box, everything is hand packed, whether the game is produced in China or Germany.

Watch the videos yourself and discover just how much work it takes to make your favourite games.

What game do you think has the best production quality? Let us know in the comments!

How to Fight Against Conventional Wisdom

by Scott Meyer
Natalie.ayerdis

No, you are not a genius.

It’s true. Leonardo da Vinci sketched designs for helicopters, airplanes, and tanks, none of which would have worked. There are probably other examples of unworkable da Vinci designs. For all I know the Vitruvian man was an illustration of a failed attempt to invent the jumping-jack.

I’m certain he never actually thought the drawings for the airplane and the helicopter would work. They were most likely musings on what might be possible with a better power source. It’s not really fair to pick on him over that, but let’s look at his tank. My understanding is that he actually proposed building that one. It was made of wood powered by hand cranks.

Here’s a video of a full size working model.

https://youtu.be/SCwCnsfVmYc

As you can see, it would have been painfully slow, even on pavement. I bet it would speed right up when the enemy set it on fire, which they almost certainly would have done immediately because, again, it was made of wood.

How to Accept Gratitude

by Scott Meyer
Natalie.ayerdis

Every now and then, often by accident, you'll do someone a favor...

When I was an office manager, if one of my coworkers liked a certain kind of disposable pen I’d buy them a whole box of those pens, then tell them to keep it quiet. I told my supervisor that the goal was to make everyone feel like they were being given special treatment. It cost the company very little, because we had to buy pens anyway, and later on when something wasn’t going their way, their pen would be a reminder that my supervisor and I were on their side. It didn’t prevent all drama, but it kept a certain amount of it off of our backs.

I know that wasn’t directly related, or particularly interesting, but it did allow me to get out of writing about accepting people’s gratitude, which does genuinely make me uncomfortable.

Board Game Sitcoms and Dice Documentaries? What More Do You Need?

by Kendall Ashley
Natalie.ayerdis

The guild was really great. I will check out a couple episodes.

Remember The Guild? Of course you do! The Guild, the brainchild of our fearless leader, Felicia Day, told the story of a gaming clan that not only gamed together, but also were friends IRL who joined together to defeat bosses like overbearing mothers, sensitive game designers, the fickle nature of internet fame, and rival clans led by Wil Wheaton. The Guild managed to show the lives of gamers in a way that was relatable, and fans loved seeing gaming portrayed in a way that wasn’t just a cheap punchline.

Moonrat Media‘s series Board with Life is doing that very thing with tabletop gaming by making a show that portrays tabletop gamers in a relatable (and hilarious) way. The show just wrapped up its second season, and it’s awesome. If you haven’t seen the show yet, it’s follows the story of a tabletop-game-loving group of friends who deal with the ups and downs of life, such as contracting viruses thanks to tainted carnival food, discovering their true selves, navigating the murky waters of romance, and of course planning for an epic gaming convention.

What makes the show special is the fact that it brings the real life of tabletop gamers to the series. The punchline isn’t the gaming. The funny comes from the lives of the characters, their quirks, and the weird things that they go through–just like real life. It’s a show that makes you excited to be a gamer while also making you genuinely laugh. Luckily, Moonrat Media didn’t just stop with the series. The YouTube channel has loads of awesome tabletop programming, like the mini-documentary on the history of dice below, and it’s all made by people who love tabletop just as much as we do.

Have you seen Board with Life or any other show Moonrat Media? What other geeky webshows are you obsessed with? Tell me about them in the comments!

That first panel. So good.
