I've seen a lot of these before, but my heart has still been warmed.

There’s still sunshine out there.

The world can be a lot. Sometimes, we just need a little reminder that there are happy things out there, like these dogs having the best day ever.

2016 midyear goal update

by noreply@blogger.com (kaylah doolan)
Emilyfazakerley

I didn't even read this...I just sat here for a moment feeling uncomfortable because we are not in fact halfway through the year yet.

We're just over half way through 2016, which is completely insane. I swear, each year flies by faster than the last. At the beginning of each year I make a bunch of goals that I share here on the blog. Find the original post of 2016's goals here. I find that talking about these goals holds me accountable for them, encourages me to accomplish them, and sometimes inspires other to make goals as well so it's a win/win for everyone!

Six months in the perfect time to sit down and evaluate how you're doing on the goals you set. There's still enough time to set new goals before the year ends, tweak ones that maybe aren't so relevant anymore, and plot out how to accomplish the others. So, here's how I'm doing...

A few of my personal goals.

Use passport. Haven't used it yet this year but I still have time. I, of course, want to go visit my best friend and her beautiful newborn! Don't know when I'll make it happen but I will use my passport this year.

Travel by train. I take the train downtown whenever I don't feel like walking and last week, I rode the Cuyahoga Valley scenic railroad. Is that what I meant by this goal? Nope. Actually traveling by train might need to be put off until next year depending on just how busy the summer is but we'll see. It's definitely still something I'm interested in!

Use my body - run, bike, stretch! YES. Thanks to Fitbit, I give this goal an A+. I honestly feel healthier than I ever have.

Unplug more. Yes... and no. I think this is something that will always be a bit of a struggle for me considering the fact that being connected is essentially my job. I have been more aware though and not feeling so guilty about just stepping away from the computer and my phone. There has to be a balance. I'm gonna find it!

25 mile solo bike ride. Haven't done it yet, still in the plans though!

Be brave, be alone. Yes! This goal was about not letting street harassment, anxiety, and a whole mix of other ugly things make me not want to spend time alone in the city. While I've had a few not so awesome encounters I haven't let them stop me.

Explore Ohio. Yeah, I feel pretty good about this goal so far. I've taken a handful of drives just to check out some fun new (to me) things this state has to offer. I also think that walking around more has really helped me to appreciate everything. It's pretty wild how much more you see by foot. Since I've started walking downtown once a week or so I've found so many neat little things that give me serious heart eyes for Cleveland.

Make 8 GIFs. Three so far this year. You can use the "gifs" tag to find them!

2 new fabric collections. I have yet to sit down and really plan this one. I'm not confident that it's a priority at this time though. I think changing this goal to "One new product" would be better suited for what I have in mind.

At least one big purge. Not yet but I do have a stack of clothes ready for a closet sale so that's a start!

Take really stinkin' good care of my new car. Maybe not "really stinkin' good" but I've been taking care of her with regular oil changes and I never leave trash in my car anymore. She could definitely use a bath and a good vacuuming though!

Save money. YES. I've been doing pretty good on this goal. I'm trying very hard to limit my purchases and put the rest away for traveling. I also recently signed up for Digit after a friend recommended it and I'm obsessed! You connect Digit to your bank account, it checks your spending habits and if you can afford it, takes a little bit out of your account to save. It's an effortless way to save. It's safe, it's free, and it's easy. I haven't been using it all that long but if things keep going the way they are now I will most likely be updating you in a few months with a review!

Send 150 pieces of mail. Smashed this goal within two months or so of the new year. I'm definitely a little bit (okay, a lot) behind on responding to stuff right now since it's been so nice outside but I'm really happy with how this goal has been going so far! I'll pick back up when it cools off.

Cook a real meal at least once a week. I am doooooing it! I mean I'm sure there's been a week or two here and there that I've missed but for the most part I am doing so much more cooking. I absolutely love it. I really am happiest when I have a clean house and something on the stove. I'm definitely still learning but feeling more and more confident with the finished product after every meal. As always, I'd love to hear about your favorite recipes! Things you cook a few times a month that are fairly simple but super tasty?

No dishes in the sink at the end of the night. Have I done this every single night? Nope. It's just not a priority when Jeff is over... but those dishes usually get washed while my coffee brews in the morning so I'm still going to call this goal a success so far. Like I said above, I really am happiest when my house is clean.

A few of my business goals.

Schedule a week ahead, always. Ha! Hah! Haaaah! Nooope. I used to be so good at this... but that was like three years ago. A lot has changed since then, including the types of things I blog about. I also think that scheduling a week ahead of time messed me up because I would work really hard to get a week's worth of work done, then feel overly accomplished and not work very hard the following days which meant the next week I would be scrambling.

Revising this goal to simply be "stop waiting until the last minute to realize you don't have something queued, ya jerk" is probably a better idea.

Don't stress over emails. I wouldn't say that I don't stress over email anymore, and I'm definitely guilty of letting some sit in my inbox way too long before responding but in general, I feel like I've improved. The biggest help has been to stop checking my email a million times a day. I try to check it around three times a day and knock out emails as soon as I see them instead of reading and forgetting which was inevitable when I checked my email constantly.

Business cards. Haven't even thought of it... Whoops!

Eliminate distractions + set a more rigid schedule. This is still something I struggle with. There are times when no matter how hard I try to sit at my computer and type something my brain just isn't cooperating. I find myself staring at plants or baby talking Klaus. I have found that I work REALLY well at coffee shops so maybe having a scheduled day or two a week at a coffee shop is exactly what I need to do to be super productive.

Be more social. I'm trying! Everyday I try to reach a set number of comments to leave depending on how much time I have. It's so easy to just double tap a photo on instagram but comments really do mean so much more. Working hard in 2016 to spread the love!

More outfit photos. Started off slowly on this goal but I'm pleased with how many I've shot these last few weeks. Just have to keep up that pace! Check them out here.

2016's goals seem to be going pretty well so far, right? I'm feeling good about it. It's been an awesome year so far. Here's to making the second half of it even better!

How are you doing on your goals?
xoxo

William Durden fell off his boat into the Gulf of Mexico without a lifejacket.

A former Navy pilot was rescued by the Coast Guard after spending 20 hours treading water in the Gulf of Mexico.

Video shared by the Coast Guard shows a man jumping in the water to rescue William Durden.

Durden, 61, fell out of his boat when he was tried to grab a fishing pole while the boat was in gear. Durden fell without a lifejacket, according to the Associated Press.

When he didn't return home from a planned fishing trip, Durden's wife called authorities and his boat was located near St. Martins Keys, 60 miles north of Tampa.

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” — Malala Yousafzai

read that blog post under how to be less awkward. it's so funny (and informative!)

How to be Smarter: Book Recommendation: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. The back cover of the book reads: “Creativity is sacred, and it is not sacred. What we make matters enormously, and it doesn’t matter at all.” It sets the tone for a book that is both playful and serious about creativity, writing, and idea generation. It’s an engaging, fun read, especially if you are a fan of Elizabeth Gilbert – I also love her podcast Magic Lessons which is based off some of the ideas in the book.

How to be Prettier: I’ve been living in these J.Crew pants lately – they feel like leggings but are structured enough to wear with loafers for weekend errands.

How to be (less) Awkward: This Wait But Why blog post covers both the behind-the-scenes of doing a Ted talk, and is laugh-out-loud funny. Love the analogy of October Tim vs. December Tim vs. February Tim, and the scatter plot graphs of different public speaking memorization methods.

This Is What Immigration Looks Like When You're A Kid

by Kristina Marie Fullerton Rico
Emilyfazakerley

interesting!

Illustrations by Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed / Graphic by Chris Ritter / BuzzFeed

I moved to the United States from Mexico when I was 7 years old, and quickly tried to learn what it meant to be an American. There were the obvious things: Lunchables, Nickelodeon cartoons, trips to Toys 'R' Us; and then there were things so new they fascinated me. I’d never known children with food allergies or asthma, and I just knew I’d be a “regular American kid” when I had an inhaler and could refuse a carton of milk on the grounds of lactose intolerance.

I never did get my wish, and soon discovered that there is no such thing as a "regular" American, but as I got older, I met other immigrants like me, and noticed a pattern. We swapped stories about details: being mesmerized by the scan button on car radios, seeing small differences between the way teachers in our old and new countries held chalk, teaching ourselves to like candy that repulsed us in order to fit in.

When Anja and I met, we bonded over our common experience of migrating as children (she moved to Ghana from Germany when she was 11) and decided to collaborate on this project. We collected stories from other people who had moved from one country to another when they were younger than 18, and Anja has illustrated 17 of those stories.

Of course, people — even as children — migrate under different conditions. Some of us leave home knowing we’ll be back to visit in a few months. Others wonder if they’ll ever see their parents again. We’ve included stories from immigrants who think of themselves as “ex-pats,” “refugees,” and categories in between.

Though our specific experiences differ in many ways, they are bound by the common thread of moving when you are not yet responsible for your own life. These are stories about what you are free to consider when your primary preoccupations are not money, employment, visas, or the lack thereof. These are stories about moving to a new place, but, more accurately, they are stories of being taken there. These are stories about the little things we noticed. —Kristina Marie Fullerton Rico

Amber Brandenburg moved from the Netherlands to Libya at 8, and noticed the insects.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"Libyan bugs were like Dutch bugs but on steroids! And there were soooo many. We used to collect them in empty milk cartons or hit them out of the sky with our rackets on the tennis court — terrible I know!"

Jasmine Bager moved from Saudi Arabia to the United States at 17, and noticed the cereal boxes.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"The grocery stores were like Disney! American stores have so many colorful options and dizzying aisles stuffed with identical-looking products with different labels. Who knew that so many cereals existed?!"

Sarah moved from the United States to Mexico at 11, and noticed what was for lunch.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"When we first moved to Mexico, we lived in a hotel for a few weeks. We ate dinner every night in the hotel restaurant, and the hotel made us packed lunches to take to school. On the first day of school, I opened my lunch and found a foil-wrapped chile relleno. I had never seen one before. Not exactly a peanut butter sandwich."

Josie Torres Drewett moved from Mexico to the United States at 8, and also noticed what was for lunch.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"It was interesting to learn about the different kinds of food people eat on the U.S.–Mexico border and see the merging of American and Mexican food. I remember vividly the first time I saw a friend making a peanut butter and jelly 'burrito' (peanut butter and jelly spread on a flour tortilla). I thought it was the grossest thing ever!"

Anja Riebensahm moved from Germany to Ghana at 11, and noticed the coffins.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"There is a tradition in Ghana to carve coffins into shapes that represent a person's life. They were often sold by the roadside, and they were very colorful. When we drove by, I would think about the kind of object I would want to be buried in. I settled on cake pretty quickly."

Christopher Dawson moved from Peru to the United States at 10, and noticed the school buses.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"The big yellow school buses that would transport kids back and forth seemed to be just about everywhere. In Peru, there was private transportation offered for kids attending school, but we didn't have this type of organized infrastructure to provide it for free."

Ernest Hampson VI moved from the United States to Germany at 12, and noticed the bread.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"Germany has a really good selection of meats and bread. The bread (or brötchen) was prepared daily and went bad in a very small window of time because it had no preservatives. It was the most delicious bread I've ever had. There are very few American foods I eat where I say, 'Damn, that is American!' In Germany, every meal I ate tasted like the history of the country."

Mina moved from Guatemala to Belize at 17, and noticed the hermit crabs.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"In Belize I collected hermit crab seashells, and my new pets always ran away."

Noa Bar moved from Israel to the United States at 5, and noticed the swings.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"In Palo Alto, the seats of the swings in the playground were made out of rubber and they were loose and U-shaped. I was used to hard swings. I also remember being struck by how many overpasses there were. Objects like swings and overpasses were the basic architecture of my life at that time."

Keith Hatch moved from the United States to Mexico at 11, and noticed the soda bottles.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"I swear soda tasted better coming from a glass bottle. You had to pay extra if you wanted to keep the bottle, so my friends and I would sit outside the store on an old car bench to drink our sodas, so we could return the bottle for the discounted price. We had many laughs on that bench."

Aggie moved from Iran to the United States at 6, and noticed the power of language.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"People were like objects to me because they were so impenetrable without language. I felt, before I grasped the language, that I was suspended in midair. I was not in a new place, I was in a no-place."

Michelle Kiang-Hinojosa moved from Venezuela to the United States at 8, and noticed the cheese.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"When I first arrived, I was obsessed with Kraft Singles. I decided that this was the real reason that my family moved to America. I ate them by scraping the cheese from the plastic with my bottom teeth, and I would eat about 10 at a time while watching cartoons, with a pile of plastic wrappers by my side. It was all very disgusting and unhealthy, and it made me very happy."

Hina Naveed moved from the United Arab Emirates to the United States at 10, and noticed the snow.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"There is no snow in Dubai, since it's a desert, and I had only read about snow in books. I finally got to experience it when I arrived in New York."

Mariana moved from Brazil to Argentina at 6, and noticed the strawberries.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"I was fascinated by some wild strawberries that grew in front of the building next door. I had never seen them still attached to the plant before. It was cool to see where they actually came from."

Inne moved from South Korea to the United States at 10 and noticed the binders.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"I loved my three-ring binders for school! I'd never had one. I'd never seen one. In Korea, I had spiral notebooks but never loose papers in three-ring binders. They seemed to define what American schools were like."

Marilyn Borroto moved from Cuba to the United States at 16, and noticed...nothing.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"I was part of 14,000 unaccompanied children that migrated from Cuba to the United States under Operation Pedro Pan. First stop: Miami, Florida City Camp. Last stop: Villa Maria in San Antonio, Texas, a type of hostel run by nuns. There were 40 muchachitas receiving room, board, and schooling through the Catholic Welfare program and the government of the U.S.A. Villa Maria was a very spooky place. Nothing was fascinating about it. We were housed on the upper floor and the zinc roof made it very hot."

Masha moved from Russia to the United States in the fall of 2015. She is 11 years old.

Anja Riebensahm for BuzzFeed

"It's cool that we have water fountains here in the U.S., because if you haven't got water and you're thirsty you may just go and drink!"

Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Stuff

Let me get this straight. It’s perfectly fine that some student back in the 90s used a pocket sized time machine to take extra classes, but my suggestion of using that same device to binge watch every episode of a Netflix series at the same time is “a wasteful use for such a priceless artifact.”

by The Awesomer

"Not. One. Bit."
This is so great.

Happy 110th Flossie Dickey!

“I don’t fight it. I live it.” Fox 28’s Good Day Spokane dropped by to celebrate the 110th birthday of Mrs. Flossie Dickey, a woman whose bubbly on-screen persona doesn’t quite align with her obvious joy for living.

This Video Of Mariah Carey Being Asked To Sing Is Legitimately Hilarious, Dahling

by Matt Stopera

HER FACE.

Mariah Carey was doing an interview on Dutch television and things got amazingly awkward when the interviewer randomly decided to ask Mariah to sing his favorite Mariah song, "My All."

Mariah Carey was doing an interview on Dutch television and things got amazingly awkward when the interviewer randomly decided to ask Mariah to sing his favorite Mariah song, "My All."

New Favorite Show: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

by Joanna Goddard
Emilyfazakerley

jeff and i watched two and a half episodes of this show and then stopped. the main character had NO redeeming qualities - she's 100% self-absorbed and mostly clueless - that we could find, so we were over it.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Have you been watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? The title and posters initially made me wary (would it be vapid? sexist?), but when the New Yorker‘s rave review called it a “funky, off-the-radar sleeper,” I decided to give it a try.… Read more

i wrote this 4 years ago and it's still true

by Mikkele Suzanne
Emilyfazakerley

and this just popped up as unread. it's like my reader is doing a timehop of your blog.

i had every intention of making this a well thought out post with meaningful thoughts and ideas. it was going to be real and honest and bring you to tears (in a good way) and make you realize that the world can be a cruel place but there is hope and healing through Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit and your friends and well spent time. i was going to take this paragraph and integrate the weekend's events into what i have realized about community and love and acceptance and dependence; about prayer and healing and support; about taking time to "be still and know that I am God", and "have mercy on me a sinner", and how all the stupid little plans that you think you've made are going to fall apart because you don't know what's best for yourself because you can't do things out of reactions to people hurting you. the sentences were going to all be run-ons but you wouldn't care anyway because you wanted to know so badly what came next that it seemed perfectly logical to not stop and pause for a breath.

i wish i could write this story for you. i really do. maybe one day i will write it; it's just that today i haven't figured it all out yet.
