Wenching and Carousing

by noreply@blogger.com (James V. West)
I was talking to my friend Jayne about a potential slutty character class they were thinking of doing. That lead us to Googling for wenches, trollops, hood rats, etc. - all within a D&D context. And of course there are results you can find on a spectrum of quality.

But during that search I found a post on A Wizard's Kiss about wenching. Color me interested.

The post offers a little bolt-on for the carousing rules from Jeff's Gameblog, which itself is a way for PCs to burn gold, earn XP, and get into trouble between adventures.

So the wenching rules add the possibility of love. Or lust, or whatever. Because in pulp stories, the hero very often ends up with a hot dish. And many of those stories are, of course, quite sexist. Or most? Anyway, the author addresses this concern pretty easily:

"Well, let's just get one thing out of the way first: much as I love it, old-school pulp fiction is kind of sexist. The protagonists are almost always men and the women are usually quite passive characters who sit around waiting to be rescued or carried off like treasure. So let's just sweep that aside and take note that from hereon in these rules the term 'wench' shall refer to NPCs of any gender and sexual orientation, so long as they are enthralled by the PCs' wealth and tales of derring-do."

So the way it works is you do the d6 carousing roll from Jeff's blog as normal, then you make a Charisma check, adding the carousing result to your Charisma. If successful, you roll on a medieval booty table to see how you scored. Madness ensues and you get more XP. Results include accidentally paying for it, getting a smokin' hot elf, or possibly twins.

Not exactly the right rules to use for a game with kids, naturally. But assuming your table is populated by adults (at least in age), this could be tons of fun.

OSR Weapon Damage

by noreply@blogger.com (James V. West)

The topic of weapon damage comes up from time-to-time in OSR discussions. I think this is because we want that beefy fighter to be so very deadly with big-ass swords and we want that wee dagger to be more lethal than it is.

A lot of folks are in favor of straight 1d6 damage per weapon, as it was in OD&D. I hate that idea, but I get it. It means that the dagger is a better choice than it normally is and it allows players to be creative with their weapon choices since there's no mechanical penalty for those choices. But it also means - since all things really are even - weapon choice is virtually meaningless in terms of mechanics. Your skull-tipped mace and my super sharp scimitar both act identically in combat. I dislike this immensely.

Caveat: (Important caveat, no less) A good DM and player rapport will cause the nature of a PC's weapon to enhance play. My choice of a scimitar vs. your skull mace may mean that the Arabic-inspired setting has more respect/acceptance of my PC vs. yours. Perhaps your wicked weapon invites trouble everywhere you go while I can pass through markets and tea houses without excess trouble. Or let's say you choose a straight arming sword while I choose a staff tipped with 3 chains securing large iron hooks. A good DM would allow me to hook-and-pull targets on a good hit roll, but may also hit me with penalties when fighting in tight spaces. Meanwhile, your simple sword presents no particular advantages or penalties.

So yeah. Straight 1d6 can work as long as the group really embraces the narrative elements of weapon choice. I still don't love it, but I'm open to it.

Another idea is damage by class. My ideas below are in this vein, but I'm not a huge fan of the versions of this idea I have seen before because they never seem to leave the existing variable damage as-is for the "middle classes" such as Thief and Cleric. Versions I can remember seeing will apply something like a small-medium-large weapon category scheme and a die step for each based on class. I think this is perfectly logical but also kind of bland. To me, it robs weapons of their character.

Some people even go as far as limiting the Strength modifier in combat to only fighter types. I get that too, but I hate it.

I'm a B/X guy through-and-through because of the versatility of basic rules such as variable weapon damage (an optional rule but let's be honest... almost everyone uses it) and the universal ability modifiers. It means I can play a B/X Magic-User who has an 18 Strength and I can be potentially a better fighter than the party's actual Fighter - at least at very low levels. This bugs a lot of people because of class niches and what-not. I get that too. But I don't care. It lends greater diversity to characters in a game with precious few built-in bells-and-whistles.

Think of that B/X Thief who got lucky with a high Str, Dex, and Con. Give that guy a two-handed sword and you got yourself a bona fide sword-and-sorcery hero.

So yeah. Ideas. There are others too.

Here's a couple of ideas I had that I might drop into my next B/X game (maybe not both). These might have already been dreamed up by some other game nerd so please post a link if you have seen either of them before. That would be awesome. I certainly have not read all the reams of blog posts out there in the OSR-o-sphere.

IDEA #1: DIE-STEP WEAPON DAMAGE

Your character's class determines the die step used for weapon damage.

CLASS DIE STEP
Cleric Normal
Dwarf 1 die step higher
Elf Normal
Fighter 1 die step higher
Halfling Normal
Magic-User 1 die step lower (min. 1d4)
Thief Normal

For general use, not necessarily specific to B/X, it would be like this:

Wizard types = 1 die step lower
Rogue/Cleric types = no adjustment
Fighter types = 1 die step higher

Race would probably be irrelevant since race in 1e or Advanced style games confers somewhat less advantage/disadvantage (or should) than in B/X where the class and race are the same.

IDEA #2: DAMAGE SCALES BY CLASS AND LEVEL

Some classes get damage bonuses as they level up.

CLASS DMG MOD
Cleric +1 per 2 levels
Dwarf +1 per level
Elf +1 per 2 levels
Fighter +1 per level
Halfling +1 per 2 levels
Magic-User +1 per 5 levels
Thief +1 per 2 levels

So Idea #1 I really dig because it doesn't mess with the existing damage values for weapons nor does it require new categories to be graphed on. You just have to go a die step up or down depending on class. It makes the dagger more serious for warriors and the sword less effective for wizards.

(I do allow wizards to use any weapon because it's fantasy. The downside is their to hit rolls suck and maybe I make them spend a round drawing or sheathing because of lack of expertise.)

Idea #2 seems like it would also go a long way toward addressing a big problem. Why is it that my level 1 fighter deals exactly the same damage as my level 9 fighter with the same weapon? It just doesn't FEEL right. It's heroic fantasy... I want to FEEL like I'm just god damn better at this shit than I used to be. So a fat +9 to damage with that dagger I picked up on the battlefield would do the trick. I dunno... I'm sure there are downsides but not sure the downsides outweigh the asskickery.

What is your cost of living like?

Hi all! My spouse and I have lived all over, but we are terribly homesick and ready to come home to be close to family, who are all dispersed all over west/mid TN.

I'm a bit nervous as I've seen the huge upheaval when I go back to visit - both in terms of cost of living .. and I'm a little sad/reminiscent to see the feel of Nashville change. I love being in the thick of the city but deep down I want at least a little patch for critters and gardening. I've read through the wiki but am wondering more about what we're facing economically.

I would love to hear what your cost of living is like, how much I should save up, what areas I may like as a prodigal Tennessean these days.

Other factors: I work as a paralegal, my husband works in electronics. Our credit sucks but our rental history is stellar. I plan on saving up, scheduling interviews while we visit family (keeping it a secret so they don't freak out!), and then possibly getting a rental or renting a room from a friend while we look for a place. (Hopefully very short term.) We currently live in 800 sq feet and dream of building a small home on a couple of acres, but renting will suffice for now!

Any advice is appreciated! :)

Witch Character Class

by noreply@blogger.com (James V. West)
Here's another version of the witch. I tried to jam every single witchy thing into this class that I feel like it needed. It's not as simple and elegant as I planned but then again witches are complex individuals, right?

For the record, yes witches can and do cast magic-user spells exactly like a magic user. I tried to indicate this in the text but it seems a bit unclear.

Sword Slinger Character Class

by noreply@blogger.com (James V. West)
The Sword Slinger! My idea was to have a PC using two weapons of equal size, just to buck tradition. It grew from there. The picture comes from a very old sketch I've had lying around for over 15 years.

One thing I want to point out is that these recent sheets are all hand-written, obviously, and prone to error. Many of the details are invented right on the page as I go along. Often I will have a white space that seems empty so it gets filled with a bit of sidebar graphics or, in some cases, an impromptu table or class ability that wasn't planned.

In other cases I spell something wrong, in ink. I detest using white out or anything like that (though I sometimes have to do it). If I can, I will roll with a mis-spelled word and spin it into a "deliberate" element of the sheet. And that's how we end up with the class ability called "Flyng" instead of "Flying Death" as it was supposed to be.

Thou Shalt Not (But I Do)

by Bacchus

The 1934 Motion Picture Production Code (usually called the Hays code) took a lot of the edgy sexy fun out of the movie industry. Here’s a famous photo shot by legendary Columbia Pictures “stills man” A.L. “Whitey” Schafer to protest the new rules. You’ll like it:

shalt-not

And here’s a different reproduction with better visual contrast, although as it’s a photo of an old print, the price is some distressed detail due to wear-and-tear.

Oddly, none of the sources I consulted about this photo identified the model.

Kickstarter - The Folio #4, 1E/5E Format Adventure Module

by noreply@blogger.com (Erik Tenkar)

This almost passed me by. I've been watching the releases of The Folio on Kickstarter and I've been impressed with what I've see with the first three (PDF only for me.)

Folio 4 wraps up funding in less than 18 hours as I write this. 5 bucks for the PDF is a bargain and a half.

Damn. I need to make my dinner to take to work tonight. Where did the day go?

From the Kickstarter page:
The Folio #4 is a 1st Edition & 5th Edition combined gaming module. It will be produced as an 8x11”, removable cover [11x17" once removed], adventure with mostly b/w interior artwork. There are two interior booklets, The Gazetteer and The Dungeon, with the final size being roughly 40 pages of content.
The bulk of the module is complete, we only need to be funding so we can begin the full printing process. This means that PDFs will go out after the campaign wraps in September, and the physical copies should be to you no later than November!
So much good gaming material, so little free time...

Pulse II Duo Vibrator For Men

by Bacchus

Pulse 2 Duo male masturbator

One of the newest sex toys in the Stockroom catalog is the Pulse II Duo, shown above. This is the first time I’ve seen one of the high-end vibrating sex toys designed for male pleasure as well as couples play, and although I don’t have one to test, it looks rather promising! Features it offers that I’ve never seen before in a vibrating stimulator for penises include:

1) Oscillation tech applied directly to the frenulum, instead of the standard vibrator buzzy-motor;

2) A vibrating area external to the toy intended for partner pleasure;

3) A hands-free wireless remote control controlling the external partner-pleasure vibration;

4) Wings that wrap around the penis allowing for hands-free use;

5) Said to work on a flaccid penis.

To me, the hands-free use and lack of need for a continuous sustained erection implies some scope for BDSM fun, orgasm control, and tease-deny play. If the Pulse II Duo stays on his penis even while his hands are bound out of the way and can bring him erect and/or to orgasm from a flaccid state as advertised, it sounds to me like a low-effort way for a lazy dominant to have a lot of fun playing with his helpless dick…

According to the Stockroom:

PULSE is a multi-award winning stimulator for men that features oscillating sensations never before seen in a men’s toy, setting it apart from all other toys that came before it.

The PULSE II DUO can either be used for male solo play or as a hands-free toy for couples. Though both versions feature 5 patterns, each with 9 speeds of intensity, the remote control included with the DUO allows for complete control over 3 speed settings specifically designed to stimulate your partner. One of the great things about this revolutionary sex toy is that it can either be used flaccid or erect, allowing the user to enjoy the sensation of being made hard and ejaculating, while offering some great possibilities for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED).

Its unique design specifically combats sexual dysfunction in people with neurological or physical disabilities, by utilizing a piston-type mechanism that causes the Pulse Plate on the interior of the unit to move up and down against the frenulum (tissue under the glans). This technique, known as “Penile Vibratory Stimulation”, is the first time this patented technology has ever been used in a sex toy and is another reason why we’re so excited to be carrying it.

This week’s addict emailed me some lovely photos of an extensive collection!

In her own words:

I have been writing since I was 13 years old and have had passion for journals ever since. A good notebook inspires me and tickles my creativity, makes me wanna express myself on it’s crisp untouched pages. It’s always there, nudging me to explore life and to dig a little deeper.
I mostly use Leuchtturm 1917, along with Moleskine, Ogami, Rustico and many more.
About a year ago I started a YouTube channel called Journaljoy, https://www.youtube.com/user/journaljoy
where I mostly do notebook reviews and comparisons, like this one:

Plasma 5.1 Brings Back Many Popular Features

by jriddell

Plasma 5

Today, KDE releases Plasma 5.1, the first release containing new features since the release of Plasma 5.0 this summer. Plasma 5.1 sports a wide variety of improvements, leading to greater stability, better performance and new and improved features. Thanks to the feedback of the community, KDE developers were able to package a large number of fixes and enhancements into this release, among which more complete and higher quality artwork following the new-in-5.0 Breeze style, re-addition of popular features such as the Icon Tasks taskswitcher and improved stability and performance.

Those travelling regularly will enjoy better support for time zones in the panel's clock, while those staying at home a revamped clipboard manager, allowing you to easily get at your past clipboard's content. The Breeze widget style is now also available for Qt4-based applications, leading to greater consistency across applications. The work to support Wayland as display server for Plasma is still ongoing, with improved, but not complete support in 5.1. Changes throughout many default components improve accessibility for visually impaired users by adding support for screenreaders and improved keyboard navigation.

Aside from the visual improvements and the work on features, the focus of this release lies also on stability and performance improvements, with over 180 bugs resolved since 5.0 in the shell alone. Plasma 5.1 requires KDE Frameworks 5.3, which brings in another great amount of fixes and performance improvements on top of the large number of fixes that have gone into Plasma 5.1. If you want to help to make more of this happen, consider a donation to KDE, so we can support more developers getting together to make great software.

Artwork and Visuals

Breeze Theme for Qt 4

A new Breeze widget theme for Qt 4 lets applications written with KDE Platform 4 fit in with your Plasma 5 desktop.

The Breeze artwork concept, which has made its first appearance in Plasma 5.0 has seen many improvements. The icon set is now more complete. The icons in the notification area in the panel have been touched up visually. A new native widget style improves rendering of applications used in Plasma. This new native style also works for Qt 4 letting applications written with KDE Platform 4 fit in with your Plasma 5 desktop. There is a new System Settings module that lets you switch between desktop themes.

Overall, Plasma 5.1's Look and Feel refines the experience found in 5.0 noticeably. Behind all these changes are improvements to the Human Interface Guidelines, which have led to a more consistent overall user experience.

New and Old Features

Icons-only Task Manager

Plasma 5.1 brings back many features that users have grown used to from its 4.x predecessor. Popular additional widgets such as the Icons-only Task Manager, the Notes widget and the System Load Viewer make their re-entry. Support for multiple time zones has been added back in the panel's clock. The notifications have been visually improved, along with many bigger and smaller bug fixes.

Applet Switcher

A new feature allows you to easily switch between different widgets which share the same purpose. Changing the application launcher for example has become much easier to discover. Plasma panels have new switchers to easily swap between different widgets for the same task. You can select which application menu, clock or task manager you want with ease. The new Clipboard widget offers a redesigned user interface on top of Plasma's venerable clipboard manager, allowing the user to easily use the clipboard's history and preview files currently in the clipboard. Plasma's alternative launcher, Kicker has seen a large number of improvements, among which better accessibility and integration with the package manager.

Thanks to two Google Summer of Code projects, the Plasma Media Center and tablet-centric Plasma Active user experiences now have basic ports available from Git, but are not release-quality yet.

Wayland

Further progress has been made on Wayland support. A new window manager binary 'kwin_wayland' now complements the existing 'kwin_x11', and is equipped with the ability to start a nested X server for compatibility with X11-based applications. A newly-created KWayland library provides Wayland setup information to KInfoCenter and other consumers. More work is needed and ongoing to run the Plasma workspace on Wayland; we expect this to bear fruit for end-users in 2015.

Suitability and Updates

Plasma 5.1 provides a core desktop with a feature set that will suffice for many users. The development team has concentrated on tools that make up the central workflows. While many features known from the Plasma 4.x series are already available in Plasma 5.1, not all of them have been ported and made available for Plasma 5 yet. As with any software release of this size, there may be bugs that make a migration to Plasma 5 hard for some users. The development team would like to hear about issues you may run into, so they can be addressed and fixed. We have compiled a list of problems we are aware of, and working on. Users can expect monthly bugfix updates. A release bringing new features and bringing back even more old features will be made in early 2015.

Live Images

The easiest way to try it out is with a live image booted off a USB disk. Images are available for development versions of Kubuntu Plasma 5.

Package Downloads

Distributions have created, or are in the process of creating, packages listed on our wiki page.

Source Downloads

You can install Plasma 5 directly from source. KDE's
community wiki has instructions to compile it.
Note that Plasma 5 does not co-install with Plasma 4, you will need
to uninstall older versions or install into a separate prefix.

Feedback

You can give us feedback and get updates on Facebook or Twitter or Google+.

Discuss Plasma 5 on the KDE Forums Plasma 5 board.

You can provide feedback direct to the developers via the #Plasma IRC channel, Plasma-devel mailing list or report issues via Bugzilla. If you like what the team is doing, please let them know!

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Supporting KDE

We produce beautiful software for your computer, please we'd love you to join us improving it or helping fellow users. If you can't find the time to contribute directly do consider sending a donation, help to make the world a better place!

Set phasers to stun… er, volume control!

by Janet Cloninger

star-trek-universal-remote-control

This is the universal remote control for the dedicated Star Trek fan.  This Star Trek Original Phaser Universal Remote Control is an exacting replica of a Star Trek phaser.  It was 3D scanned from the last remaining prop phaser in existence, and it has a detachable MK I phaser unit (seen on the top).  The phaser is made of hand-polished, die-cast metal parts.  It plays a variety of phaser and other Star Trek sounds, it has a removable side door that exposes an illuminated dilithium crystal power cell, and it vibrates and illuminates when “fired.”  But it’s not just nice to look at.  It’s also a fully programmable, gesture-based remote control that works with TVs, DVD players, audio systems, and even iPod docks.  It has a built-in lithium-ion battery, a USB cable for recharging, and a display stand so you’ll never have to embark on a five year mission to find the remote control again.  It’s available from Firebox in the UK, but they will ship to the US.  It will ship in November, 2014, but you can either sign up to be notified of availability, or you can pre-order a Star Trek Original Phaser Universal Remote Control from Firebox for about $205 US.
