Grizzly unseats and kills Montana mountain biker

by Jason Weisberger

Don't fuck with Bears

Image: Yellowstone National Park

Near Glacier National Park, a surprised grizzly bear attacked three mountain bikers. Two were able to escape, but the third, Brad Treat, was killed.

Via Alaska Dispatch News:

Treat died Wednesday afternoon after being attacked by a grizzly bear just south of Glacier National Park. Though he had maintained his athleticism — he was riding his mountain bike, after all — Treat, who was just 38 years old and a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Forest Service, couldn't escape his fate.

But his companion did. Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry told the Associated Press that Treat and another man had been biking near Halfmoon Lakes when they came across the bear, surprising it. The other man escaped unscathed and sought help while the bear knocked Treat off his bike.

Help arrived too late, and Treat was declared dead on the scene. The bear has not been found, though authorities are searching for it, and campers were briefed on the incident.

Classic Shooter Assault Suit Leynos Targets PS4 on July 12

by Lee Skittrell
Paul Brownlee

Yes. I'll try to hold out for the PC version.

Behold — the original shooter from the 16-bit era, now with stunning HD-era visuals! We announced Assault Suit Leynos for PS4 only a few short months ago, and since then there has been a real surge in excitement from fans of the classic series, known originally as Target Earth.

The game received a staggering showing at PAX East in the U.S. and also at London’s ComicCon. Illustrated by the community reaction, Leynos is fondly remembered by fans of the 16-bit classic, and that’s why we can’t wait to bring this blistering, high-definition remake to PS4 with enhanced visuals and entirely new gameplay features.

Our developer partner Dracue, based out of Japan, is handling the respectful and faithful coding duties (so that’s why you’re stuck with me, a Rising Star publishing person). You’ll see we’ve not dialed down or diluted the series’ (in)famous level of challenge. This is a tough game, but fair — rewarding precision and skill. We’re proud to shout about its hardcore nature. The newly remixed Arcade mode offers extended levels, full voice-acted cutscenes, and recalibrated AI enemies. For those who enjoy a real old-school experience, Classic mode challenges you to battle like it’s 1990 with authentic gameplay, effects, and music.

For newcomers, Assault Suit Leynos provides a rewarding learning curve. With patience and proficiency, you’ll begin to make headway into the game in no time, discovering your favorite weapon loadouts to choose for the mission, and enjoying the game’s climactic set pieces and anime sci-fi story. There’s also the opportunity to apply various gameplay modifiers to customize your experience the way you want it.

As a team made up of fairly core gamers, here at Rising Star Games we’re honored to bring this classic from our childhoods to a new generation of console and a new community of gamers.

Assault Suit Leynos is available digitally on July 12, priced at $19.99.

Burger King Introduces "Mac n' Cheetos"; America Vows to Eat Them

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey
by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

For those who are bored with the usual methods of developing angina, may I present Burger King's newest product: MAC 'N CHEETOS.

750x-1.jpg
Courtesy Burger King / Satan

According to Bloomberg, the burger chain is rolling out this new (possibly delicious, but probably not) abomination in an attempt to boost sales (as Taco Bell did with their Doritos-inspired freak food, Doritos Locos Tacos). Burger King's Mac 'N Cheetos are described as "deep-fried sticks of macaroni and cheese encrusted in Cheetos-flavored breading," BUT HURRY THE FUCK UP BECAUSE SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED!! From Bloomberg:

Mac ’n Cheetos will be sold for about eight weeks or until supplies run out, said Burger King, which is part of Restaurant Brands International Inc. The $2.49 five-pack of portable macaroni-and-cheese bites are similar to mozzarella sticks. The item, which has 310 calories, has already appeared at some Burger King restaurants in a trial phase.

Intellectually, I know this is a trap. I know that Burger King wants to see me sheepishly poke my head in their Portland doors, just to see if they have this abhorrent non-food in stock. AND YET? As god as my witness, if they do, I will shove these Mac 'n Cheetos into my stomach as fast as they can come out of the fryer. Well played, you Burger King bastards. WELL PLAYED.

Ridiculously detailed typographical analysis of Blade Runner

by Gareth Branwyn
Paul Brownlee

Attn: Matt

bladerunner_1_46_13_tdk_logo_full

If you love Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, the minutia of film, and nerding out over typography, prepare to have your neck bolts blown. Dave Addey runs Typeset in the Future, a website dedicated to the typographic elements found in sci-fi films. He has previously examined the titling, signage, logotypes, text messaging, and visual displays found in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moon, and Alien. Here, he turns his typographical attentions to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner.

In 5,000 words and hundreds of screen caps, Dave goes through every scrap of textual content seen in the film. What's equally amazing to the point of the piece-- typographic analysis--is how much you learn about every other aspect of the film. This one narrow skew of the movie reveals so many other angles and tangents. Blade Runner is a film I already know too much about and I still learned so much more and had numerous "ah-ha" moments.

The first time we meet Deckard, he’s sat in the Los Angeles rain, idly reading a newspaper. The headline of this newspaper is FARMING THE OCEANS, THE MOON AND ANTARCTICA, in what looks like Futura Demi: bladerunner_0_08_24_newspaper_full Here’s a close-up shot of that newspaper prop, from an on-set photo of Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott: bladerunner_newspaper_press_shot_full The subtitle reads WORLD WIDE COMPUTER LINKUP PLANNED, in what looks like Optima Bold. While the idea of a World Wide Computer Linkup might seem passé as we approach 2019, it was still very much unusual in 1982 when Blade Runner was released. Indeed, it wasn’t until March 1982 that the US Department of Defense, creators of pre-Internet network ARPANET, declared TCP/IP as the standard for all military computer networking, pretty much kick-starting what we know as the modern-day Internet of 2016.
The Spinner’s landscape-orientation TV shows a display that may be familiar to regular TITF readers: bladerunner_0_09_52_alien_purge This ENVIRON CTR PURGE display is identical to the one we saw in Alien, just before the Nostromo exploded: alien_1_42_27 As if that wasn’t enough self-plagiarism, Ridley Scott also steals a second display from his earlier sci-fi masterpiece: bladerunner_0_10_04_alien_release …which the more observant of you may recognize as Alien’s shuttle disconnect sequence: bladerunner_alien_0_13_59_shuttle_release
Gaff’s Spinner journey also introduces us to a recurring piece of typography from the movie’s backdrop. The Blade Runner production team re-used city background scenery in different configurations throughout the movie, which is why the glowing NUYOK sign seen here… bladerunner_0_10_11_nuyok …is remarkably similar to the glowing sign for the YUKON hotel seen thirteen minutes later (also known as the temporary home of replicants Leon and Zhora): bladerunner_0_23_10_yukon
There is so much wonderful content here, so many things to tickle a typography and film fan's fancy, I could go on and on. But just go to the site and see it all for yourself. Just don't expect to get anything else done for the next few hours.

Blast from the Past

Apparently this video is from Суздальфест 2016, which is a Russian festival for animated films on YouTube. Or at least that is what I think it is. My knowledge of Russian is non-existent and I am at the mercy of Google Translate with this one.

All I know is that this animation was awesome and deserved to be shared.

MEGAMANIMATION

by Steve Napierski
Mega Man 2 was a lot of people's first introduction to the franchise. I was fortunate enough to have already rented the first one, from a local video store, before the second one came out. Those during an era where display boxes were king, I can understand how the bad box art of the first game definitely didn't help to sell any copies.

Still curious to know who was the "artist" that created the art work for the first Mega Man's box.

Thank you to everyone who came to my table at A-Kon! It was a super good show, and everyone I met was super great, as always. I ate a taco every single day so I met all of my personal Texas goals.

Discussing Fallout 4

by Steve Napierski
Discussing Fallout 4 According to an interview from Mashable, Fallout 4's director Todd Howard said the following:

"Believe it or not, every time we do a game we design a multiplayer mode just to see what we would do. Then we go, 'Yup, we shouldn't do that. That's an awesome idea that is way too distracting from the main thing we want to do, which is single player.' I could see ways it would work, but development-wise, they're very different experiences."

And there you go.

Zeboyd’s Cosmic Star Heroine Blasting Off In Summer

by Alice O'Connor
Paul Brownlee

I was surprisingly impressed by this trailer.

Zeboyd Games, the folks who redeemed one of the world’s greatest monsters in Cthulhu Saves The World and revived the Penny Arcade Adventures, have announced that their next retro-styled RPG is coming this summer. Cosmic Star Heroine [official site] is an intergalactic RPG about a space-super-spy on the lam, and Zeboyd namechecked inspirations like Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star when they Kickstarted it in 2013. It won’t be long until we see how it’s worked out but, for now, we can have a peek in a new trailer:

Witcher 3 Blood and Wine Pays Its Respects to Dark Souls with a Clever Easter Egg

Paul Brownlee

Oh cool

video-games-dark-souls-nod-from-witcher-3-easter-egg

You can find the Dark Souls hat tip in one of the final missions, from a branch off the main story line of Blood and Wine's 'Beyond Hill and Dale' quest. The Easter egg brings with it the nice shiny take-home prize of a level 46 sword known as Gesheft, which is a relic class weapon, and offers up to 20% extra intensity across all signs, has three rune slots, and deals out up to 627 damage in its base form.

I'm weary about giving away the easter egg itself, so we'll hold off on that for now...what do you guys think of the Dark Souls nod in itself though? Kind of cool. The guys over at VG24/7 broke it down though, and provided a nice screenshot of the Easter egg too, if you want to check it out here.

Live in a box!

by Richard Kaufman

gno001-5

Tiny houses have always appealed to me. This is likely because my childhood room was quite terribly tiny. Twin bed; desk at the foot of the bed; narrow space by the bed to walk to the bathroom; door. Much the same as a room in a Japanese businessman’s hotel.

Thus I find myself attracted to this new product from the Cozy Room company of Japan. It is essentially a room in a box with a fancy chair that slides in and out. When the chair is in, you are totally contained and, one hopes, “cozy.” Rocket News helpfully breaks down the name of this little getaway (“Kakureya”) as “a cross between the Japanese words kakureru (‘to hide’) and heya (‘room’).” I cannot help but be reminded of a space capsule, though it lacks the interplanetary scenery.

gno001-2

gno001-1

There are shelves for your collectibles or library, a desk on which to work, a slide out drawer under the desk for your computer keyboard, convenient ventilation and aromatherapy, a place to hang a flat screen TV, various drawers (small, of course). No kitchenette, I’m afraid.

gno001-colection

gno001-work

gno001-relax

gno001-monitor

I can envision many peaceful naps in there … shouldn’t the fancy chair really be one of those Japanese massage chairs?

I would modify mine with a pet flap for my cats — no room for the kitty box inside.

Of course, you must have a very large room in which to place this tiny room — somewhat of a paradox. And what would the neighbors think when they come over to watch a football game?

https://youtu.be/t3Q8m61orKM

If you’ve got a hankering to spend the rest of your life living in less space than a jail bird, Cozy Room’s website will sell you your very own cell of solitary confinement for a mere $7,900. Not sure how you can get one back to the U.S., but I have the feeling that this is a kind of Ikea deal where it comes flat and you have to assemble it yourself.

If that’s beyond your budget, then they will also sell you a box for $2,000; for many people, this might be sufficient.
