SNES Classic comes with a fun poster ⊟

Remember how 16-bit consoles used to come with posters advertising games you should spend your Christmas/birthday money on? Nintendo is bringing that back for the SNES Classic with a poster shouting out titles included with the mini system – the other side has instructions for setting up the hardware.

Since you can’t tell just how mini that SNES is in the above photo, here’s a comparison shot with the Switch controller:

image

The SNES Classic hits stores September 29 in North America and Europe with 21 pre-installed games, including the never-released Star Fox 2. If Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime is to be believed, you should be able to get a hold of one for $79.99 without having to resort to buying from eBay scalpers.

Shout-outs to my wife Alexis for taking the photos, as well as to RetroDetect and bigtong76 for the shots of the old SNES posters.

RIP Juicero, the machine that squeezed juice from packets of juice

by Mark Frauenfelder
Paul Brownlee

end of an era

Big VC firms like Google Ventures and Kleiner Perkins invested $118 million to fund a company that made a $400 machine that squeezed juice out of proprietary juice packets. Now they have nothing to show for it besides over-engineered machines destined for the dump. At least customers are getting a refund!

From the Juicero Blog:

However, today, after selling over a million Produce Packs, we must let you know that we are suspending the sale of the Juicero Press and Produce Packs immediately.

In order to fulfill our mission, we announced last month that we would shift our resources to focus on lowering the price of the Press and Produce Packs. We began identifying ways that we could source, manufacture and distribute at a lower cost to consumers.

During this process, it became clear that creating an effective manufacturing and distribution system for a nationwide customer base requires infrastructure that we cannot achieve on our own as a standalone business. We are confident that to truly have the long-term impact we want to make, we need to focus on finding an acquirer with an existing national fresh food supply chain who can carry forward the Juicero mission.

For the next 90 days, we are offering refunds for your purchase of the Juicero Press. Please contact help@juicero.com by December 1, 2017 to request a refund for your purchase. If you have an active Pack subscription, you will receive your final delivery next week (week of September 4th).

An Honest Mega Man Game Trailer

Some timing since I'm doing all of this now.

I noticed that Time Man and Oil Man were excluded. I believe that was intentional, since they are both retcon robot masters. Still, the fact that they gave names to all robot masters, was awesome.

A Secret of Mana remake! On PS Vita! In 2018! ⊟

It’s releasing worldwide on February 15 for PC and PS4, too, but I really love seeing new PS Vita game announcements (though a Switch version would also have been nice). So far, it sounds like this is a digital-only title?

Square Enix is releasing this 3D remake of Secret of Mana with 3D graphics, voiced characters (with various language options, including Japanese audio with English subtitles), a newly arranged soundtrack, and more. If you preorder the game on PSN, you’ll receive PSN avatars of the RPG’s characters instantly, as well as DLC costumes when the remake releases.

One nice thing about this is that it’s a way to play Mana without trying to buy a SNES Classic. [Thanks, Tony!]

Netflix's First Takeover: a Comics Firm

by msmash
Paul Brownlee

Interesting

Netflix announced today that it is acquiring Mark Millar, a well-known name in the world of comics. As part of the deal, the on-demand streaming company said, it will be creating original movies and TV shows from the content. It's Netflix's first acquisition. From a report: Millarworld, founded by Mark Millar from Coatbridge, includes his portfolio of characters and stories such as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan. Mr Millar said he was still "blinking" over the news. He said it was only the third time a comic book purchase on this scale had ever happened, with Warner Bros buying DC Comics in 1968, and Disney buying Marvel in 2009. Mr Millar, who lives in Glasgow, started Millarworld as a creator-owned comic-book company nearly 15 years ago. He runs the company with his wife Lucy Millar. It is the first ever company acquisition in Netflix's history. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Mr Millar said: "I'm so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn't have a better home."

Sundered Launches Today, Tips and Tricks for Elite Players

by Médéric Bélair
Paul Brownlee

Looks cool

Hey everyone. My name is Med, and I’m Thunder Lotus’s QA tester and resident speedrunner. As you can imagine, I’ve played Sundered quite a bit. In total, I think I’ve logged more than 1,000 hours in the game! Today, I’d like to go over some advanced techniques that you should definitely learn if you want to master Sundered.

In case this is the first time you’re hearing about the game, Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival and sanity. You play Eshe, a wanderer in a ruined world, trapped in ever-changing caverns filled with hordes of terrifying enemies. We’re the same studio that made Jotun, a hand-drawn epic set in Norse mythology.

Sundered launches today on PS4, so let’s get started!

Elite Techniques

I’ve always loved the idea of “elite techniques” in games. Hidden moves that occasionally slip through as bugs, but end up as core features of the game. Great examples include “wavedashing” in Smash Bros. or “skiing” in Tribes. One of my greatest pleasures in Sundered’s development has been discovering these strange interactions and convincing the team to leave them in the game. A bug is not a bug if it’s a feature.

For reference, dodging and using the Cannon effectively are critical to your enjoyment of the game, but the following techniques are meant for advanced players!

Sundered

1.) The Cannon

The Cannon’s knockback might seem like a downside, but it is actually one of its best assets when used properly. You can use the knockback’s momentum to your advantage by firing, immediately dodging, then jumping to keep your speed going. The momentum will be kept regardless of the dodgeroll’s direction.

Sundered

Using this technique, you can zoom through the levels with record pace as well as entering Ability-gated areas you aren’t suppose to be in.

Sundered

2.) Air Attacks

The mid-air up-attack has more than an offensive purpose. You get an extra sliver of vertical lift every use, so it comes in quite handy for platforming.

Sundered

It resets every jump, and your double jump is reset when an enemy is hit. Use it wisely. You can scale high walls by wall-jumping/up-attacking/side-attacking back towards the wall.

Sundered

The mid-air up-attack can also be reset with good enough timing, enabling Eshe to essentially fly away by spamming the up-attack, but it is really hard to maintain a good streak.

Sundered

3.) Momentum

Never stop moving. Movement is important as it is what makes you progress through the levels and keeps you alive. A way to create speed is through using the Strength Amplifier, an Ability that grants you chargeable heavy attacks. Charge them towards flat or upward terrain, immediately roll mid-smash, then jump.

Sundered

This creates a massive swing that launches Eshe forward if used with proper timing. Using this technique, you can skip entire sections, fly into areas you should not be able to reach, and utterly break the intended progression of the game with record time.

Sundered

The gun can also be used for this purpose, but requires ammunition and an extra Energy charge.

Sundered

That’s it for now. We can’t wait to watch people play and completely break the game! I’m sure there are many more undiscovered interactions hidden deep within Sundered’s code. We’ll find out soon enough, since Sundered launches today on PS4!

Make sure to tell us what your favorite “bugs that became features” are in the comments!

Resist or embrace.

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Autobiographical “Endless Poetry” Is Fearlessly Bizarre

by Bennett Campbell Ferguson
Paul Brownlee

Gotta watch this

In one of the freakiest scenes in Alejandro Jodorowsky's autobiographical Endless Poetry, two robbers receive a vicious beating. They've just tried to steal from a store in Chile run by the deranged, mustachioed Jaime (Brontis Jodorowsky, the director's son). Rather than bother to alert the police, Jaime repeatedly kicks one thief, tears off the other's clothes and insists that his son Alejandro (Jeremias Herskovits) join him in administering his barbaric brand of "justice."

It's the kind of scene that could make you squirm and retch. Yet even in its grimmest moments, Endless Poetry is delightful. By combining hallucinogenic images with joyously hyperbolic performances, Jodorowsky has made a film that is not only blackly funny, but above all, beautiful in its fearless embrace of the bizarre.

Centered in the film's whirl of strangeness is Alejandro, a budding poet growing up in the 1940s. The film recounts parts of his traumatic childhood, but Endless Poetry mostly focuses on his early adulthood, when he's played by Adan Jodorowsky (another son of the director) and enjoys a turbulent romance with a fellow poet named Stella (in an Oedipal twist, she's played by Pamela Flores, who also plays Alejandro's mother).

Endless Poetry is also about Alejandro's coming of age. The bones of that story—friendship, family mayhem, rivalry—echo biopics like Walk the Line.  He may be treading familiar ground, but Jodorowsky's fusion of wit and weirdness makes it irresistible.  Alejandro's mother literally sings dialogue like an opera star, masked figures lurk in scenes like ghostly stagehands and Jaime's explosions of rage are so exaggerated that they're both horrifying and hilarious.

As Jaime, Brontis Jodorowsky gives the film's fiercest, wittiest performance, and you can feel the story's momentum sag whenever he's off-screen. Yet whether Endless Poetry is chronicling Alejandro's entertainingly ill-fated stint as a political protester or indulging in an unusually clever fart joke, it seizes your attention like a flamboyant ringmaster presiding over a circus that, despite being baffling, is a joy to behold.

CRITIC'S RATING: 3/4 stars.

SEE IT: Endless Poetry opens Friday, July 28, at Cinema 21 the Hollywood Theatre.

Psycho Fox I used to own a Sega Master System, but I never owned Psycho Fox. As such, I have absolute no nostalgic ties to the game. I remember reading an article in Electronic Gaming Monthly, many years ago, that said it was very popular in Europe. I guess I will just have to take that publication's word for it.

Poop doping could be the latest performance enhancement craze

by Jason Weisberger

Evidently you can be full of the wrong shit. A cyclist, by testing her friends fecal output, determined she needed better critters up in herself to improve her pedal pushing. So she did.

The madwoman behind “poop doping” is Lauren Petersen, a postdoctoral microbiologist at the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine. Petersen has been racing bikes all her life, but as she told The Scientist earlier this month, she’s struggled with chronic Lyme disease since her teen years. She finally rid herself of the disease in 2013, but the intense course of antibiotics she took had ravaged her system and left her with chronic fatigue and stomach problems.

Eventually, she learned that her microbiome (the colony of microbes in her body) was dangerously unbalanced and was not functioning as it should. She was not breaking down any food, and she learned that she was not eligible for a potentially beneficial fecal transplant. So she simply did one herself. As she said, it was a fairly dangerous DIY procedure and it wasn’t fun, but it worked better than she thought it could:

In February 2014, with the support of her family, she recruited a donor and did it herself. “I just did it at home. It’s not fun, but it’s pretty basic. It costs like six bucks to do.” (The $6 being for the drugstore enema kit.) The do-it-yourself solution worked. “Within two months I was a new person,” Petersen says. “I had no more fatigue. I could ride my bike hard three days in a row, no problem.” She started racing four months after her fecal transplant, and was winning races at the pro level soon after that. “Everything changed,” Petersen says.

Petersen’s donor was a fellow elite cyclist, and after analyzing the sample and those of other riders, she discovered an unusually high prevalence of the bacterium Prevotella, which helps synthesize amino acids that help in muscle recovery. Petersen’s analysis of her friends’ craps also showed an abundance of M. smithii, which performs a complementary function. The science is complicated, but in short, a healthy amount of both bacteria types in one’s gut means you can more efficiently process food and then deal with debilitating byproducts like carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Portland's World Naked Bike Ride: Everything You Need to Know!

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey
Paul Brownlee

I have a bike now I just bought, but no.

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

Screen_Shot_2017-06-23_at_1.01.03_PM.png
Courtesy WNBR

Guys! I hope you're ready for Portland's version of the World Naked Bike Ride, because it kicks off tomorrow night (Sat June 24) at 8 pm (ride at 9 pm), starting at Fernhill Park (6010 NE 37th Ave). It's always a goddamn hoot, whether you're riding or watching... but if this is your first time, here are some tips from the experts to make sure you'll have the ride of your life.

1) How nude should I be? As nude as you want! While helmets and especially shoes are always a good idea, underwear is fine, stockings are fine, and all your juicy bits flapping in the wind is fine. IT'S ALL FINE! While nudity won't get you arrested, acting in a lewd behavior will. Be cool, and keep your eyes up, perv.

2) How should I prepare? First of all, don't drive to the starting point (it's a huge faux pas). Bike, or take the bus or MAX—and bring your friends. Secondly, smart WNBRs figure out some way to carry clothes, snacks, water, and a bike tool/pump/patch kit in a backpack, pannier, or basket. Fanny packs are hilarious and very useful in this situation. Also bring some donation money (WNBRs don't grow on trees), and for an after-ride drink. Third and most important, DON'T GET DRUNK BEFORE OR DURING THE RIDE. You're going to be surrounded by thousands of cyclists, so ride safe and keep your wits about you.

3) What if people see me? Well... they are going to see you. But remember, you're going to be in a humongous throng of Ps & Vs whizzing past the crowds at a quick clip. Nobody's gonna remember your P or V. Pro-tip: If you want to stay anonymous-ish, stick to the center of the street away from high-fiving crowds and photogs. Some riders wear masks (that don't obscure the vision).

4) Why is this even happening? Great question. The WNBR was originated to show the vulnerability that cyclists endure in a car-crazy culture. But it's also to draw attention to our great and powerful cycling community, and how biking can improve everyone's lives... while having tons of nudie fun. It really is a blast, and if you haven't experienced the excitement, NOW IS YOUR TIME.

Find out tons of more information here!

Barbie's Ken is now sporting a manbun

by Rusty Blazenhoff

And now he's ready to move to Portland and join his kin.

Earlier today, Mattel announced its brand new line of Fashionistas Barbie and Ken dolls. These 40 new dolls come in a variety of body sizes (which now includes Ken's "slim," and "broad" figure), as well as a bunch of different skintones, hair colors and hairstyles. The most notable hairstyle, in my opinion, is Ken's MANBUN.

Yep, Barbie's boyfriend (they are dating, right?) is finally sporting last summer's hottest hairstyle.

After Last Year's Got Flooded, Adult Swim Is Coming Back with Another Live Event

by Ned Lannamann
Paul Brownlee

Hmmm, maybe

by Ned Lannamann

adultswimonthegreen.jpg

Those who tried to attend last September's Adult Swim live event in Portland will remember that the Adult Swim Drive-In was cancelled due to heavy rain flooding the venue, Portland Meadows. So it's appropriate that Portland is on the short list of cities where Adult Swim is visiting with this year's presentation, Adult Swim On the Green.

The tour swings through Portland on Monday, June 19 at Sellwood Riverfront Park (another flood-prone area, although fingers crossed it stays dry this time). The event includes games, food, and free swag, plus screenings of "Things You've Never Seen," featuring stuff that's as-yet unaired on Adult Swim.

Like last year's, the event is free, but this time you need to buy a $5 voucher—redeemable for food or beverage—in order to secure entry. A very small amount of guests will also be let in at the door. More info is in the Mercury event calendar, with additional details at Adult Swim's website.

Mystery Science Theater 3000's Live Show Is Coming to Portland

by Ned Lannamann
Paul Brownlee

Attn: Mike

by Ned Lannamann

MST3KLive.png
Attention, fans of bad movies and wisecracks: Mystery Science Theater 3000 has just announced its first-ever live tour, and one of the stops is here in Portland. MST3K's "Watch Out for Snakes!" tour hits the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Friday, July 28, and will bring creator Joel Hodgson, new host Jonah Heston, and robot friends Crow, Tom Servo, and Gypsy to a Portland stage. Presumably, audience participation is encouraged.

The tour is actually made up of two alternating shows: the Eegah show, which we'll be getting here in Portland, and then a "Secret Surprise Film!" late show, which sadly is NOT happening at the Portland stop. The latter is a screening of a unnamed but presumably execrable sci-fi B movie, with all the expected wisecracks. (If you really must see it, it's happening in Seattle the following night.)

However, the show that Portland will be getting includes a screening of 1962's Eegah, which MST3K originally ripped on way back in 1993. This live version consists of "all-new riffs and sketches" to accompany the Richard Kiel-starring film, and there will be video appearances from recurring cast members Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt.

In case you missed it with all the other incredible TV happening right now, Mystery Science Theater 3000 has recently been relaunched on Netflix following a record-setting Kickstarter campaign. Tickets for the Portland live show go on sale at noon on Friday, May 19.
