Watch debt grow in real time at the US Debt Clock

The politics escape me, but I'm fascinated by the US Debt Clock, a website covered in real-time tickers and counters purporting to show all of the unpleasant statistics piling up in America.

They also have a World Debt Clock for all your international inchoate anxiety needs.

That's about right.

If that doesn't fix it, git.txt contains the phone number of a friend of mine who understands git. Just wait through a few minutes of 'It's really pretty simple, just think of branches as...' and eventually you'll learn the commands that will fix everything.

PS Plus: Free Games for November 2015

by Andy Lum

Drama. Magic. Zombies. Magic zombies? Maybe not that last one, but we’ve got the other three in spades with our new free games coming to PlayStation Plus. So without further ado, here are your PS Plus games for November!

Leading the (zombie) pack is critically acclaimed The Walking Dead: Season Two on PS4, by the expert storytellers at Telltale Games. The second season follows Clementine in her struggle to survive a world torn apart by the undead menace. Guide her actions and influence the game’s outcome as nail-biting choices must be made to keep on living.

Also available this month is Magicka 2 on PS4. This spell-slinging action game empowers you and your friends with the elements to defeat your enemies (or sabotage those same friends). Hysterics may ensue, which might be a welcome break after all those zombies…

These PS4 games are free for PlayStation Plus members starting on the first Tuesday of November, and you can find the full list of PlayStation Plus games below. Enjoy!

Full Lineup:

  • The Walking Dead: Season 2, PS4
  • Magicka 2, PS4
  • Mass Effect 2, PS3
  • Beyond Good & Evil, PS3
  • Dragon Fin Soup, PS4, PS Vita (PS3 Cross-Buy when available)
  • Invizimals, PS Vita

Before you go, we want your feedback! Please leave us a comment below and tell us what you think of the lineup. Thank you for stopping by.

Until next time! Enjoy.

"It Follows" is one of my fave horror movies. Rent it in HD for 99 cents

by Mark Frauenfelder
Paul Brownlee

gotta watch this

it-house

Amazon is offering an HD rental of It Follows for 99 cents. I'm ready to watch it for a 3rd time! Here's my March 2015 review of the movie:

I stopped being scared or creeped out by horror movies about 20 years ago, but when Carla and I watched It Follows on Saturday night we were both freaked out of our wits.

The premise is simple. If you have sex with a cursed person, a monster will begin walking slowly in your direction. The monster can take on the form of a stranger or someone you know. When the monster reaches you, it will kill you in a horrible way. You can run or drive away from the monster, but it knows where you are and will start walking towards you. To rid yourself of the curse, you need to have sex with another person. The monster will target them. If it kills that person, it will then come after you.

Lenika Cruz of The Atlantic says the monster of It Follows is "one of the scariest antagonists in recent cinematic history," because we don't know anything about it.

But what's most satisfying about It Follows is how its monster manages to inspire such slow-burn terror when it spends 90 percent of the film doing something decidedly un-scary: walking slowly, often out of frame. Even the absence of the linearly traveling, unrelenting "it" is no relief: The anticipation of its arrival slowly and brutally wears the audience down, like death by a billion spoon thwacks. It's hard to know what to call the thing at the center of It Follows—a spirit? A monster? A villain? Is it even really evil or just a human embodiment of inhuman malevolence? As the director, Mitchell, has said: "There's no logic to it—you can't really explain a nightmare."

The inclination of horror movies to explain and profile the dark force as much as possible often results in a didacticism that doesn't translate well onscreen. Just think of how many films feature a haggard, wide-eyed protagonist poring through old texts, newspaper clippings, or Internet searches, or tracking down old victims in hopes of finding an answer. The process of the investigation itself can be spooky. The little girl was pushed into the well by her mom? Shudder. Rather than cultivating fear in the gradual, deliberate reveal of gruesome details, It Follows' thrust comes instead from training the audience to recoil from the shadowy, blurry figure on the horizon, behind the characters, without fanfare or warning.

Another other big reason this movie was so terrifying is the ominous chiptune soundtrack by Disasterpiece. Listen to it here.

Shin Megami Tensei IV’s follow-up is Final ⊟

Atlus will release Shin Megami Tensei IV Final – a new game, not an enhanced or remixed edition – for 3DS in Japan next February, according to Famitsu details posted by Duckroll. So far, all we know is that it’s based on the original SMT IV’s setting and is centered around the theme of “godslayer”.

Satoshi Oyama, who has done a lot of programming and design work on previous entries in the series, will be taking over directorial duties from Kazuyuki Yamai this time around. More details on the game next week!

Saga Volume 5: proving you can do big SF with crazy aliens and deep politics

by Cory Doctorow
Paul Brownlee

I made it up to trade 2 on this. Time to stop procrastinating and read the rest.

Saga_Vol5main

I had exactly one complaint about this comic: Staples and Vaughan just took too damned long to publish new issues. The stupendous third collection took nearly a year to surface, and then the fourth came out six months later, along with a deluxe edition collecting the first three books between one set of hardcovers, accompanied by inspired excerpts from Staples' sketchbook.

It's been nine months since, and at last, the fifth book is in hand.

Staples gets top billing on this collection, and Vaughan told me that the current storyline was of her making. This makes her one of comics' most inspirational figures, because book five features such incredible art and such incredible storytelling that the idea that they both originated with one person beggars the imagination.

You should be reading Saga. It's got that Mos Eisley/Transmetropolitan/Zita vibe of every conceivable alien race all jumbled together in a kind of bizaare bazaar, with all the colorful aesthetic business that this lets the visual artist go crazy with.

When George Lucas filled Mos Eisley cantina with every manner of muppet, he implied a huge and weird universe with politics and trade and pervy sex and depravity. But when he actually sat down to flesh out all that interspatial politics, it turned into the minutes from a trade conference with a bit of racist stereotyping around the edges.

The Saga universe is also a universe dominated by politics, war, and economics -- but it's anything but dull. With book five, Staples takes us deeper into futuristic politics than we've gone so far in the story, but in such a skilfull, even terrifying way that it's even more fun than all the fucking and killing that the first four books featured (though there's some awesomely dirty dragon sex stuff in this one, too).

And of course it ends on a cliffhanger. Christmas is coming soon -- fingers crossed for another collection in time for the tree. In the meantime, go and read this and then re-read it and then give copies to all the best people you know.

Damn.

PlayStation TV hack enables more Vita games ⊟ For whatever...

sweet will try it.

PlayStation TV hack enables more Vita games ⊟

For whatever reason (touchscreen stuff, testing stuff, who knows) the PlayStation TV doesn’t run every Vita game. But a new hack enables it to run almost everything, simply by emailing files to yourself and opening them in the built-in email app.

I haven’t tried this, so I can’t verify how well stuff works – and there is still stuff that doesn’t work because it relies on all the Vita tricks – but at least you can try more games now, if you want to risk trying this stuff. Maybe, through some combination of the PS3′s L3/R3 touch emulation and the PS4′s touchpad, you can open up more Vita games to big-screen play! Via Rich!

Oh Ho! Seems Like Naughty Dog Just Accidentally Revealed Last of Us 2

Paul Brownlee

Eh, you knew they were going to make it.

Naughty Dog designers seemed to have confirmed work on Last of Us 2.

Well, well, well, you naughty dog, you.

During a recent Twitch live stream discussing the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection, a Naughty Dog designer seemed to let a cat out of the bag when he mentioned the first Last of Us game.

Folks, there has only ever been one Last of Us released or announced or otherwise. This careless reference seems like a plain admission that the fantastic developer is working on a sequel to the incredible 2014 release.

Games Radar broke it down

It was Uncharted series writer Josh Scherr who had a slip of the tongue, talking up his co-worker Eric Baldwin's facial animation work on "all of the Uncharted games and the first The Last of Us."

Baldwin immediately recognized his error and attempted to backpedal, but he couldn't seem to come up with anything else to say. "Uh, did I say 'the first The Last of Us'? The first The Last of Us. Uh, The Last of Us! The first Last of Us."

They were also kind enough to upload a YouTube video of the incident in question. See for yourself:
