Obama Takes a Surprise Walk Around D.C., Meets With Normals

by Brian Ries

President Obama stepped out from his White House bubble on Wednesday to greet a bunch of normals who happened to be in Washington, D.C., that day.

A video released by the White House, called "The President Takes a Surprise Walk," provides ample record of this historical moment, and shows us all how we'd react if we randomly encountered Obama on a stroll across Washington.

"The bear is loose!" Obama exclaimed to a crowd as he set out on his journey to the Department of the Interior, a black suit jacket slung over his left shoulder. "How's business?" he then asked a woman selling pretzels, hot dogs and egg rolls. "Yeah, business is doing all right," the woman said. Read more...

EBay Users Still at Risk After Cyberattack, Even If They Change Passwords

by Christina Warren

When eBay admitted Wednesday that it had been the victim of a cyberattack, the company asked all of its 145 million active users to change their passwords. But the intruders had access to a customer database that also included other personal information, including names, mailing addresses and dates of birth — data that can't so easily be changed.

The good news is that eBay says that no financial or credit card information was compromised. Financial data was stored on separate systems, and eBay says there's no evidence that any PayPal data was compromised. The bad news is that the data that was compromised was still important. Read more...

Facebook Is Working On A Way To Share Music, TV, And Movies Using Your Mic On Android And iOS

by Bertel King, Jr.

Facebook-ThumbIn an effort to further diversify the content of status updates (which consist 115% of political arguments and babies being cute), Facebook is working on a way to help users share what they're listening to with others. No, the social network won't turn into a file-sharing site, but it should at least help friends give some attention to the same artists or performers you enjoy.

Facebook

When writing a status update, users will have the option to enable their microphone and have the app listen to whatever's playing.

[New Game] MacGyver Deadly Descent Arrives In Play Store, Is Presumably Constructed From Chewed Gum, String, And Paperclips

by Ryan Whitwam

mReaders of a certain age may remember when MacGyver was a show on TV and not just a campy way to refer to tinkering with junk to make neat stuff. Now you can take on the role of MacGyver in the official MacGyver Deadly Descent game. It is unclear if you get to build an ultralight plane out of an old outboard motor, pipes, and a tarp, but there are plenty of puzzles to solve.

Southwest Airlines App Version 2.4 Tweaks The User Interface And Adds A Mobile Boarding Pass For 28 Airports

by Michael Crider

unnamedThere's not a whole lot that one company can do to make the hellish miasma of American air travel better, but bless them, Southwest Airlines is trying. The latest update to the company's official Android app tweaks the interface yet again (the second time in a year), and adds a mobile boarding pass to save you just in case you forgot to print it out on old-fashioned dead trees before leaving.

Secret launches for Android, brings exclusive features for exploring anonymous posts

by Derek Ross

Secret, which has been an iOS exclusive for the past 4 months, is now available for Android. Secret allows you to “speak freely” by sharing your thoughts with friends while being anonymous. The idea behind Secret came about so that people could share moments, like posts, and reshare other’s posts without the need to be embarrassed, raise controversy, and most importantly: to just be themselves without filter.

With the launch of Secret on Google Play, Android users will have exclusive access to features that iOS users have been asking for since the beginning: two separate streams. First, a “Friend” stream and second, an “Explore” stream, where you can browse and share popular secrets from around the world. In addition to Android exclusive features, Secret’s update today brings about ways to make posts more engaging by including questions you can ask and respond to and view how many of your friends are using Secret.

Secret-Post

Secret is all about sharing secretly. When you post on Secret, at first only your contacts with the app installed will see your anonymous post. Then, if your contacts heart or like your post, their contacts can now see the post. Then, those people can heart the post and their contacts will see it, etc. As you can see, your posts have a chance to go viral, spreading around from person to person, helping add more anonymity as additional people see and heart the secret.

As for security and privacy, contacts are hashed, so no raw phone numbers or personally identifiable information is sent to Secret to match friends to other friends. The metadata for each secret posted is also stored without referencing any a user. For a full breakdown of Secret’s privacy and security practices, head on over to their official blog post, which explains everything in great detail.

Secret for Android Secret for Android Secret for Android Secret for Android

To start posting your inner most thoughts, head on over to the Google Play Store to install Secret. You’ll need a device rockin’ Android 4.1 and higher.

Spooky Ghost-Like Figure Interrupts German Soccer Match

by Brian Koerber

Prepare to spend the rest of the day peeking over your shoulder.

Television cameras caught a creepy ghost-like figure running the pitch during German Cup between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday. The shadowy figure can be seen appearing out of nowhere and moving across the field before disappearing into thin air.

Just last month, another figure was spotted on camera during a match in Bolivia. Maybe ghosts just love soccer.

If you've been eyeing someone on Facebook whose profile doesn't list a relationship status, the company is making it easier (or possibly more awkward) to find out if he or she's single.

Facebook has rolled out a new "ask" feature for those profile pages that don't list relationship statuses. The owner of the page doesn't see the button — only the person who is checking out the page.

By clicking "ask," you can send the user a message related to his status (such as "want to grab a drink sometime?"), as well as a request to list his status as single, engaged, married or in a civil union. Read more...

Fearsome New 'Game of Thrones' Killer Is Almost as Scary in Real Life

by Sam Laird

Game of Thrones fans on Sunday night were re-introduced to a gigantic mass of man whom the good people of Westoros refer to simply as "the Mountain." The Mountain is huge, impossibly strong and has a major aptitude for dispensing ultra-violence upon lesser men. He'll soon put that to use as Cersei Lannister's champion in the trial-by-combat of her brother, Tyrion.

But if you already knew all this, here's what you probably didn't know: The new actor who plays the Mountain is almost as fearsome in real life. He stands 6'9", weighs more than 400 pounds, bends steel bars for fun and was thisclose to being named 2014 World's Strongest Man, finishing second in the wince-inducing competition Read more...

Is this Facebook's plan to win back younger users?

Chuck E. Cheese's, the restaurant chain known for its appeal to the under-10 demographic, announced Tuesday it will begin offering an Oculus Rift experience at about 16 of its locations. The chain will provide the "Chuck E. Cheese Virtual Ticket Blaster Experience" on the virtual reality headset in select restaurants in Dallas, San Diego and Orlando this month.

"Kids today have unprecedented access to game consoles and tablets," said Roger Cardinale, president, CEC Entertainment, in a press release. Instagram does users a solid by killing off activity sharing to Facebook

by Chris Chavez

Instagram update privacy

Today, the folks at Instagram have done their users a solid by killing off activity sharing to Facebook. Once a way to let your grandma on Facebook know how much of a pervert you were, turns out the handy feature was littering timelines with photos of fetishes and everything else your weird uncle likes on Instagram.

Although the changes were announced in the latest 5.0.11 update for iOS, we noticed the the usual prompt asking to share activity to Facebook didn’t appear on the Android version which was recently updated to 5.2.1 on May 11th. Previously, a popup with clever wording would appear just after signing into the app for the first time, asking if you’d like to share your “likes” to Facebook.

This new level of privacy is sure to be welcomed from all IG’ers and we found it an interesting move considering it further separates Instagram as a social network all of its own, away from big brother Facebook.

Flappy Bird creator shows off new game so we can all shut up about Flappy Bird already

by Chris Chavez

We get it — everyone “hates” Flappy Bird. As annoying (and addicting) as that little game was, it didn’t stop it from becoming a pop icon in a short amount of time. The only person more sick of hearing about Flappy Bird is probably its creator, Dong Nguyen.

New DotGears game thats not Flappy Bird

Nguyen took to his Twitter this afternoon to show off a new game he and his team are working on to serve one: get everyone to STFU about Flappy Bird. We can’t help but wonder if this new game — which looks more like a simplified platformer — will see the same level of success as its feathered sibling (we can’t say its name, remember?), or if it will drift off into obscurity like some of DotGears’ other titles.

We will say we’re exciting to give it a spin and will let you know when more info is available. In the meantime, just forget about that game which shall not be named and play something else. Like Dragon Coins.

Turkish Government Official 'Sorry' After Kicking Protester

An aide to Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was "deeply saddened" by the Turkish mine disaster in Soma and "sorry" after he was seen kicking a protester there.

"I was deeply saddened by the Soma incident," he said. "I am sorry that I was not able to keep my calm."

The phrase, some say, is not an apology for kicking the man. It's more one that expresses regret.

Yusuf Yerkel says I am really sorry. It has profoundly affected me but I was provoked and insulted and then lost my temper.

Who says print is dead?

Chipotle unveiled a new program Thursday called Cultivating Thought, which features original essays from 10 writers, actors and thinkers printed on Chipotle cups and bags.

The group includes George Saunders, Judd Apatow, Michael Lewis and Jonathan Safran Foer. Foer, who is curating the series, developed the idea while he was eating a burrito and realized he had nothing to read.

“We live in a world in which there is shrinking space for literature and writing, and less time than ever for quiet reflection,” Foer said in a statement. “The idea of expanding the space and time, of creating a small pocket of thoughtfulness right in the middle of the busy day, was inspiring to me — particularly given the size and diversity of the audience, which is America itself." Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have completed a groundbreaking new test: They knocked widespread blood cancer into remission with a single massive blast of measles vaccine.

Stacy Erholtz, who was suffering from an advanced stage of blood cancer, recovered thanks to an intravenous injection of the measles virus, which was sufficient to overwhelm the cancer’s natural defenses, the StarTribune reports

As far as clinical trials go, this was a small test because it only had two subjects. But lead researcher Dr. Stephen Russell told StarTribune it’s a promising start. Read more...
