In the midst of tumultuous weather that has been sweeping across the UK, this Boeing 737 took off from an airport with a funnel cloud rotating behind it. The picture, however, may be a bit deceiving, making the funnel appear closer than it actually was. But even still — this could not have been a comforting sight for passengers

Severe weather has been battering the UK over the past two weeks, with the remnants of Hurricane Bertha and a powerful surge of unseasonably cool air moving in and sweeping summer weather away

SeaWorld wants you to know it's changing its ways.

The company announced on Friday that it plans to build "new, first-of-its-kind killer whale environments," in addition to funding programs that protect oceans and killer whales in the wild. The news comes just two days after shares of SeaWorld's parent company, SeaWorld Entertainment Inc., fell 30%. The company's stock closed at $18 on Thursday, the lowest price since it went public in April 2013.

Business for SeaWorld, which is based in Orlando, Florida, has been hurt by negative publicity surrounding its treatment of killer whales. Although the company's management had previously blamed other factors for declining attendance, it acknowledged in a press release to investors issued Wednesday that the publicity affected its bottom line. TMZ Has Photos of an 'iPhone 6' (Because Why Wouldn't They?)

by Lance Ulanoff

Feed-twFeed-fb

Yes, folks, celebrity gossip and sometimes hard-ish news site TMZ got its hands on photos of what looks like an Apple iPhone 6.

On Friday, the site, best known for breaking celebrity news, waded deep into nerd culture and unveiled a collection of images that may be of the rumored 5.5-inch (or 4.7-inch, it's hard to tell) iPhone 6

The phone was allegedly smuggled out of a Foxconn factory in China, where Apple's iPhones are manufactured, and was photographed by a friend of an ex-factory employee.

The images look a lot like others we've seen of the rumored phone. It's larger than an iPhone 5s and iPhone 5, which is pictured in some images to show size comparison. It has a body similar to an Apple fifth generation iPod, and there's a new sensor on the front. Read more...

NASCAR Adds New Rule on Exiting Cars After Accidents

by The Associated Press

BROOKLYN, Mich. — NASCAR has added a new rule telling drivers to not approach the track or moving vehicles after accidents. The rule comes less than a week after a driver was struck and killed during a dirt-track race at a small New York track.

NASCAR star Tony Stewart is skipping this weekend's Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Last Saturday, Stewart's car hit and killed Kevin Ward Jr. at a sprint car event in Canandaigua, New York. After Stewart clipped Ward's car, sending it spinning, Ward left the car during the caution period, walked down the track and was hit by Stewart. Read more...

USB Type-C with reversible design has been finalized, doesn’t care which way you insert it

by Chris Chavez

usb-3-type-c-final-render

Ever since we started using them in modern smartphones (old phones like the Sidekick actually used a round AC plug), current standard USB cables are not only convenient, but single handedly responsible for some of our biggest-little frustrations in life. Jabbing away at your phone with a micro USB cable, only to find out you have the damn thing upside down. Yeah, that’s what hell is going to be like. But that’s only half the equation. The same frustrations exist when using the full sized end to plug into the host device/charger. See the illustration below that explains how USB cables actually exist in the 4th dimension.

usb-4D

Pretty much how inserting current USB cables work every time

Okay, so we’re all familiar with the problem facing our current non-reversible USB cables — something Apple actually addressed quite well when introducing their Lightning cable — and in an ongoing fight to find out ways we can better convenience our lives, just what are we as a human race doing about this age old problem? Apparently a lot. The folks responsible for the USB standard have just finalized a new USB Type-C connector which features not only a super handy reversible design (double sided USB 3.1 connections), but a 100W power delivery spec as well.

usb-30-type-c-hybrid-receptacle

While you would think hardware manufacturers are more than happy with current non-reversible USB connectors, apparently the USB 3.0 Promoter Group says the new Type-C design has been very well received and that “representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive, and IoT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard.”

So how long before we see this new cable/ports available in our Android an/or PCs? Given the design was only just finalized and how popular current micro USB design is, it will probably take some time before we see wide spread adoption. If we had to guess, we wouldn’t expect to see smartphones using USB Type-C until sometime next year at the earliest. Until then, we’ll continuing doing back flips on those rare occasions we actually slip a USB into its port on the first try.

Retailer leaks Galaxy Note 4 specs: 4GB of RAM, Snapdragon 805, 4K video and more

by Quentyn Kennemer

samsung galaxy note 4 2

While it won’t be terribly long before Samsung lets us in on their little Samsung Galaxy Note 4 secret, we’re eager to find out what’s in store for their second half flagship ahead of its September 3rd revelation. One reputable Indonesian retailer — Erafone — may have jumped the gun a bit and posted all the juicy details before Samsung could even get a chance to get the teasers rolling.

According to them, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be boasting the following list of specs once it finally emerges from the shadows:

  • 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 or octa-core Exynos with four Cortex-A57 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores (depending on model and region, we imagine)
  • 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display
  • 4GB of RAm
  • 16/32/64GB of internal storage w/ microSD up to 128GB
  • 16 megapixel camera with 4K video recording, optical image stabilization and dual-LED flash
  • microUSB 3.0 with MHL 2.0 video out
  • Dual-band WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Android 4.4.3 KitKat

Unfortunately the listing doesn’t go into massive detail about any extra bells and whistles or software features, but it’s nice to get a good idea of the framework of this device before Samsung’s ready to let it be known for themselves. Speaking of framework, an earlier leak gave us a potential first look at the device itself.

It appears to be using a bit of metal in its chassis, though there’s a strong possibility that the device we saw is an early prototype and there’s a chance it may look different. Funny, that, as it technically wouldn’t be the first device in Samsung’s new metal-filled design strategy for their Galaxy lineup — the Samsung Galaxy Alpha snuck in for that honor just yesterday.

There’s always a chance these specs could be false, of course, but it’s not out of the ordinary for a retailer to have such early access to device information (considering they have to prepare to sell it to us, and all). Still, approach this with a grain of salt until we can get Samsung to fork over the details themselves. Let us know how you feel about these specs — a worthy upgrade over the Note 3 or is Samsung’s magic beginning to wear out?

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown Confronts How Minority Deaths Are Portrayed in Media

Following the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen on Saturday, and the ensuing media portrayal of his death, Twitter expressed outrage in the form of a hashtag.

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown protests the depiction of minorities — especially African-Americans — who are often presented as "violent thugs with gang and drug affiliations," according to The Root. Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed by a police officer on Saturday after an altercation with the officer in Ferguson, a predominately black suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, police said. Details of the shooting are in dispute, and the St. Louis County Police Department is still investigating the incident Read more...

Alleged Samsung Galaxy Note 4 images leak as “Galaxy Note Edge” trademark appears

by Quentyn Kennemer

samsung galaxy note 4 2

With under a month to go until Samsung unleashes the goods we’re anticipating you can expect the leaks to begin ramping up. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has surprisingly kept a pretty low profile to this point, but we may have gotten our first leaked photo of the thing courtesy of a GSMArena leak.

We can’t gleam much about the device from the photo in terms of things we weren’t expecting. It has a camera, a physical home button (which could double as a fingerprint scanner) and probably has a fingerprint scanner beneath that LED flash next to the camera on the back. There’s also an S-Pen, and that freaking huge display that’s hard for anyone to miss.

One thing we do notice is that the device does not have a wrap-around display. Previous rumors have told us to expect a display that wraps around the edges to display limited amounts of information on the sides (such as fitness, time or weather info) or possibly provide extended controls for music playback and other functions. We’re not sure what material the backplate is made of, but it does appear to be another “premium” faux leather outing.

samsung galaxy note 4 4 samsung galaxy note 4 3 samsung galaxy note 4 1

The bezels suggest the device will have a metal frame as rumors have suggested, so there should be no more complaints about cheap and flimsy plastic should that come to pass. It may not be the full metal unibody build we typically go nuts over, but it’s better than nothing. Of course, those who contend plastic is better are probably unhappy, but hey — you can’t please everyone.

To piggyback that news, Samsung has apparently filed a trademark for “Galaxy Note Edge,” which would hint that the wrap-around Note device could be an entirely separate device altogether. It’s a shame that they wouldn’t take the chance and put that into the base model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, but what are you going to do?

We’re not sure if that dashes our hopes of seeing the device outside of Asia as Samsung will likely look to sell the base Samsung Galaxy Note 4 model above anything else. I guess only time can answer those questions, and we’re hoping the first round of answers will arrive at some point before Samsung’s September 3rd event.

Originally Terminator: Genesis, the new tytle — er, title — swaps an "i" for the "e" and a "y" for the "i" in a bit of spelling musical chairs that drew more than a few snyckirs — er, snickers — online:

Touchdown: the best Android apps for football season

by Joe Fedewa

football apps

Blue 42…set…hike! A couple of days ago the NFL pre-season officially kicked off. That means we’re just a few weeks away from the college and pro football seasons getting started. The World Cup provided us with some futbol, but now it’s time for some hard-hitting real American football. One of the best companions to any sporting event is a smartphone. Real-time stats and information in the palm of your hand can make a football game much more immersive. We’re pumped for the season to get started, and these are some of the apps we use to follow our favorite teams.

CBS Sports

cbs sports

CBS is one of the main TV networks for the NFL and the SEC games. The CBS Sports app gives you access to all of these games, plus every NFL and college game you can find. Follow live action with GameTrackers, scoreboards, box scores, and even streaming live video of top events. Plus you can set up scoring, team news and breaking news alerts to keep you on top of all the action. The CBS Sports app works great on tablets and phones.

ESPN College Football

espn college

If college football is more your thing we’ve got apps for that too. ESPN has the best coverage for college sports, and their Android app is pretty darn good too. Some of the features include in-progress video alerts of the biggest plays, easy access to live games on WatchESPN, personalized My Games scoreboard featuring any college football game you care about, editorial coverage , ad much more.

ESPN Radio

espn radio

Sometimes you just can’t get to a TV to watch the game. Maybe you’re stuck at work, or stuck in traffic. Listening to a game on the radio can be a fun new experience, too. ESPN Radio is a great app for finding a way to follow your favorite games. This app is especially useful if you’re trying to find an out-of-market game. With the ESPN Radio app you can also listen to shows like Mike & Mike, The Herd, and more.

ESPN SportsCenter

sportscenter

Is there anything more synonymous with sports as SportsCenter? This simple highlight show has become one of the most watched and well-known programs on TV. The SportsCenter app is a great way to track every game with real-time stats, video highlights, scores, and alerts. This app is also great for following breaking news stories. Love them or hate them, ESPN is the king of sports.

Fanatics

fanatics

One of the most important things about being a fan is the gear. In order to cheer your team on you need t-shirts, flags, mugs, decals, chip bowls, foam fingers, and anything else with your team’s colors. Fanatics.com is a great place to find fan gear for any of the teams you love. The Fanatics Android app makes it easy to browse the store and buy items so you can be ready for gameday.

Fantasy Football Apps

The football season is great for more than just the games you see on TV. While real athletes compete on the field, millions of average Joe’s are waging battles of their own. Of course I’m talking about fantasy football. One of the biggest advancements in fantasy football has been the smartphone. Managers can track their players’ performance in real-time, make trades on the go, and much more. Here are a few of the best fantasy apps available.

Draft Punk

draft punk

The most important day for ever fantasy football manager is draft day. The draft may only last a few hours, but the results will determine how you do the rest of the year. Don’t go into any draft unprepared. Draft Punk is an essential tool creating a championship team. Simply enter the rules and teams from your league and let Draft Punk do the work. The app will determine the best player available for you to draft, and keep track of everyone’s picks.

League Apps

There are several popular platforms used by most fantasy football leagues. Luckily all of the big ones are available for Android. Download these apps to keep track of drops and pick-ups, trades, and gameday scoring. Find the app below for whatever your league uses.

FOX Sports GO

FOX GO

FOX plays tons of football games across the span of a season. If you don’t have access to this channel you will miss a lot. FOX Sports GO gives subscribers access to FOX Sports, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, and your regional channels. FOX Sports 1, especially, is a very nice up and coming alternative to ESPN. Watch live streams of games and great shows on the go with your phone or tablet.

NFL Mobile

NFL Mobile

NFL Mobile is the NFL’s official app, so you can bet it has all the features you need to keep up with the NFL. Breaking news, in-game highlights, live game scores, custom team news, and fantasy football news are a few of the features offered by this app. If you’re a Verizon customer you can even get access to NFL Redzone and live games on Sunday and Thursday. When you want the NFL you go to the NFL’s official app.

NFL Pro Football Schedule 2014

schedules

Many of the apps in this list allow you to see full schedules for any team you like, but they also offer a whole lot more. If you’re looking for a simpler way to view the football schedule this is a great app. You can view the entire season week-by-week, choose your favorite teams, and get alerts when certain games start. The app can also be used as a quick way to check scores without all the extra features that get in the way.

TeamStream

team stream

Team Stream by Bleacher Report is a great app for following only your favorite teams. Because why should you care about news from some other team? Pick the teams you love and get real-time, hand-picked notifications so you’re always the first to know big news. Open a stream anytime to find scores, next games, videos and even more stories for your teams from local newspapers, websites, blogs, Twitter, and Bleacher Report.

Thuuz

thuuz

Can’t watch enough great sports moments? Thuuz is a must-have app for you. Thuuz makes sure you never miss a Steelers-Ravens game for the ages, a Tom Brady 4th quarter comeback, or Peyton’s 6th TD throw. Thuuz rates all live and upcoming games on a scale of 0-100, making it easy for you to know exactly what to watch. Personalize the app based on your favorite teams, sports and even your Fantasy players so Thuuz will alert you to the games near and dear to your heart. If you always miss big moments you need this app.

Twitter

twitter sports

Twitter may not have been created with sports in mind, but it is one of the best apps to have on gameday. If you follow the right people you have access to a treasure trove of inside information, stats, sideline reports, and commentary. There is something so cool about experiencing a big sporting event with thousands of people on Twitter. Plus, it’s a great way to trash talk your rivals from the safety of your own couch. If you’re still not on Twitter make this season your first.

Yahoo Sports

yahoo sports

One of my personal favorite apps for football season is Yahoo Sports. This is another great alternative to the “Mothership” a.k.a. ESPN. Yahoo Sports offers a great UI with real-time coverage of NFL and college games. You can set up alerts for your favorite teams and games to stay on top of the action. You also get access to the great reporting, breaking news, and editorials from the Yahoo Sports website.

***

Are you ready for some football? With these apps you will be a lean, mean, football tracking machine. Now that we’ve shared our favorites we want to hear from you! What apps do you use during football season? What teams are you rooting for this year? Let us know in the comments below.

Android surpasses iOS web usage for the very first time

by Quentyn Kennemer

M8-Blurred-KitKat

As long as Android has controlled worldwide market share, it’s never quite been able to match iOS in terms of web usage. That has finally changed, though, with the latest report from Net Applications suggesting Android has surpassed Apple’s platform in that regard. So what does this mean?

For starters, this effectively squashes the notion that people buy Android devices only to regret having to take it out of their pocket. Android users are doing more on their devices, something that can be attributed to better apps and better access to data (4G being made available pretty much everywhere).

What can this do for Android in turn? More web usage means more potential ad impressions. More potential ad impressions means more money for developers. More money for developers means more developers will stop treating Android like a second rate operating system. That all means better and more apps for users.

It’s a conundrum of goodness that can only gain more and more positive momentum as the months and years move on, and it’s that kind of ecosystem that has helped Android dominate since its arrival in 2008. In short, Android is doing better than ever, and we’re loving it.
