Crooked Cop Outed As Gang Member After Driving A Ferrari To Work

You know that scene in Goodfellas after the airport heist where Robert DeNiro tells his guys not to buy anything with the money, lest they be discovered, and then one of them runs out and buys a new pink Cadillac for his wife? That just happened in England, except with a Ferrari. And the criminal in question is a police officer.

LONDON — The M15 director-general gave a rare public speech Thursday evening warning about a group of core al-Qaeda terrorists in Syria planning mass casualty attacks in the West.

“We face a very serious level of threat that is complex to combat and unlikely to abate significantly for some time," he said adding that plots for three UK attacks had been prevented by authorities in recent months that he said would certainly have otherwise resulted in deaths

Parker's speech at the Security Service headquarters on the banks of the River Thames came a day after an attack in Paris at the offices of satirical publication Charlie Hebdo that left 12 people dead. Intelligence officers are working to establish if there was a link between the attackers and al-Qaeda. Read more...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama wants publicly funded community college available to all Americans, a sweeping proposal that would make higher education as accessible as a high school diploma to boost weak U.S. wages and skills for the modern workforce.

The initiative's price tag has yet to be revealed, and it faces a Republican Congress averse to big new spending programs. Obama was promoting the idea in a visit Friday to Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee, and in a video message posted to Facebook Thursday evening.

A rare winter storm dumped a heap of snow on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on New Year's Day, turning the desert treasure into a "winter wonderland."

The roads were snow-packed and icy on Thursday, the National Park Service wrote on its Flickr page, reporting that even more snow fell that morning.

"It is a winter wonderland out there," the National Park Service said

The snow was still visible on Friday after snow fell across Flagstaff, Arizona on Wednesday and Thursday.

Fuhu Just Went Insane And Announced Some TV-Sized Tablets

by Cameron Summerson

When Fuhu announced the 20- and 24-inch Big Tabs, we all kind of chuckled and gave them a pass. Surely kids would like huge tablets, right? I think so. But now things are just getting out of hand - the company just announced 32, 43, 55, and 65-inch Big Tabs. Tablets the size of TVs. It's insanity, I say.

MOD-299520_BigTab_65_Drawing1

All of the Big Tab XL models are capable of doubling as TVs (thankfully), which makes them a little more justifiable.

Can’t afford a new car for Android Auto? Pioneer’s bringing 3 in-dash stereos to add it to your old one

by Quentyn Kennemer

pioneer nex in-dash

As good as Android Auto is poised to be for the little bit it’s designed to help you do (control audio playback and help you get to where you need to go), there’s one sad fact: it required you to think about buying a new car. Thankfully there are more Android Auto products being announced that don’t require you to spend thousands of dollars on a brand new car.

Pioneer is bringing the goods in modular fashion with three new in-dash stereo units from their NEX line that can be dropped into a compatible bay. The only problem on your end is making sure your car allows installation of these things. The other? Well, coming up with cash in the range of $700 to $1,400 to buy one of these. Even with that, though, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than having to buy a brand new car.

Here’s the full suite of features you can look forward to:

  • HDMI® Connectivity
  • Wideband Speech & A2DP AAC Bluetooth® Connectivity
  • Android Auto Compatibility
  • Apple CarPlay™ Compatibility
  • MirrorLink® Connectivity
  • HD Radio™ Technology
  • iDataLink® Maestro® Technology
  • Dual Zone Audio/Video Playback

The Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX ($1,400), AVIC-7100NEX ($1,200), and AVH-4100NEX ($700) will be available starting in March 2015. Let us know if you’ll be looking to scrape enough cash together to slap one of these inside the ol’ automobile.

10 Best Outdoor Documentaries Streaming on Netflix

by Billy Brown

We’d all rather go out and live the outdoors than watch someone else do it, but there’s nothing wrong with getting a little inspiration every now and then.

With streaming video services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, getting a virtual stoke is just a click away. Here, in random order, are 10 of our favorites, a few of the best outdoor documentaries streaming on Netflix now. (Last updated Feb. 21, 2018.)

Top 10 Outdoor Documentaries on Netflix

A Harrowing Night In: 10 Great Survival Movies Online

Living through a survival situation generally sucks. Watching someone else do it? A great night of entertainment. Read more…

Meru

Get a taste for the training, sacrifice, and suffering inherent in climbing big mountains as elite climbers Jimmy Chin, Conrad Anker, and Renan Ozturk summit one of the world’s most difficult peaks. More than just a climbing movie, it’s a tale of perseverance, friendship, and survival.

The Endless Summer

This quintessential surf documentary shows what sports documentaries were like before GoPros. Roger Ebert called this “90 minutes of wish fulfillment.” Damn straight.

Losing Sight of Shore

The plot is simple: Four brave women set out to row across the Pacific Ocean from America to Australia. The details, however, are anything but ordinary as the crew spends 9 months at sea overcoming extreme challenges. It’s history in the making.

Under an Arctic Sky

Love “180 Degrees South?” Then this is the frigid surf film for you. Come along as six intrepid surfers head to Iceland in search of waves unlike any they’ve seen before.

Higher

Watch snowboarders ride peaks so steep it boggles the mind. Jeremy Jones is at it again with this big mountain snowboarding film, “Higher.” It depicts first descents in Jackson Hole, the Alaska Range, and above 20,000 feet in the Himalayas. Snowboarders Bryan Iguchi, Luca Pandolfi, and Ryland Bell join him for some out-of-this-world footage. Released in 2014, “Higher” completes the trilogy: “Deeper,” “Further,” and “Higher.”

Valley Uprising

An immersive, must-watch film, “Valley Uprising” details decades of Yosemite’s fabled big-wall climbs and climbers. Beginning in the golden age of early rock climbing, the film masterfully shows the rivalry between Royal Robbins and Warren Harding. It progresses to the Stone Masters of the 80s and the present-day Stone Monkeys. Each generation has icons and manages to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of rock climbing.

Jumbo Wild

Jumbo Glacier and the surrounding area in British Columbia is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and backcountry skiers. Patagonia’s film “Jumbo Wild” explores the fallout from an architect’s desire to build a year-round ski and golf resort within the valley. The project would alter the immense wilderness all the locals enjoy. Watch and contemplate the pros and cons of easily accessible skiing on some of the world’s best powder.

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young

With a name as daunting as “The Race That Eat’s Its Young,” the Barkley Marathons is one of the most challenging and curious ultra-distance races in the world. In over 25 years of races, only 10 people have finished. Across 100 miles, the course climbs 54,000 feet through untracked terrain and brambles. Entrants must write an essay on “Why I should be Allowed to Run in the Barkley” and pay the $1.60 application fee. Are you up for the challenge? Watch and find out.

Finding Traction

“Finding Traction” tells of Nikki Kimball’s journey to set the fastest-known time (FKT) on Vermont’s 273-mile Long Trail. From training in the Rockies to her record attempt, the film intimately portrays her journey. Known as America’s oldest trail, the route runs the entire length of Vermont through the Green Mountains. The story encourages people to spend more time outdoors and offers a new perspective on how far the human body and psyche can go.

National Parks Adventure

Originally released in IMAX theaters, this documentary features some truly breathtaking footage of America’s natural wonders. Come along as a trio of adventurers revisits the camping trip that inspired the creation of the National Park system. An enjoyable mix of history and beautiful wild places.

Kenwood Debuts The DDX9902S In-Car Multimedia Center With Android Auto And Apple CarPlay

Kenwood-ThumbSeeing which manufacturers will bake Android Auto into their latest models is cool and all, but I'm looking to see which third-party options start appearing on store shelves. After all, I bought my vehicle in 2013, and I'm not looking to replace it in the next couple of years. Fortunately Kenwood has come to CES with one that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the DDX9902S.

There's nothing to be ashamed of — none of us get enough sleep. How can we be expected to get a healthy 8 hours of sleep a night when all of West Wing is available on Netflix?

It's impossible to be well rested at a 9-to-5 and aside from injecting coffee straight into your arteries, the only way to combat office fatigue is with a good office nap.

Considering a quick snooze at your desk can actually lead to a more productive workday, you might want to start penciling in 10-20 minutes of nap time into your daily planner. Here are 7 tools to help you make it happen. Read more...

Hands-on with Sony’s crazily expensive Android-based Walkman ZX2 [VIDEO]

by Quentyn Kennemer

Most audiophiles take pride in their ability to notice subtleties in the music they listen to, and often go to great lengths to make sure they can extract as much of those subtleties as they can. Whether that be in the form of accepting nothing but the highest quality audio files or a pair of headphones with a monstrous price tag, they’ll do everything they can.

And now they have another crazy purchase to consider. Sony is bringing the Walkman back in a big way with the introduction of the Walkman ZX2. This thing costs about $1,200, and promises to deliver you the sort of hardware audio processing that your music deserves.

At first glance we can certainly tell you that it looks and feels like a $1,200 device, so if you were worried about getting a child’s toy for the price of a month’s worth of mortgage then don’t fret. That said, we’re not sure its build quality is enough to entice all but the most serious music listeners to drop that much cash on it.

Sony Walkman DSC07637

Loaded up software-wise is Android, though nothing terribly recent. In fact, it’s running what could be considered ancient in the technology realm — Android 4.2, which was released at the tail-end of 2012. It’s still modern and contemporary, sure, but still a bit troubling.

But if you like that it supports high-quality audio formats such as DSD, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, Apple Lossless and more, and its ability to connect to wireless headphones and speakers through Bluetooth and NFC — AND you have $1,200 that you just don’t have anything better to do with — then go nuts. Our hands-on time with it is above so hit the play button to see what’s going on with this thing.
