U.S. Government's Never-Ending Quest to Design the Most Difficult-to-Manufacture Object

new-100-bill-01.jpg

How can you ensure your product design never gets knocked off? By manufacturing it with proprietary production methods and materials no one else has access to. That's always been the government approach to making currency, which is arguably the number one thing you don't want people knocking off. But as manufacturing techiques trickle down, and now that digital imaging has become child's play, the design of physical currency has to continually evolve. That creates a situation essentially the opposite of what industrial design is: Currency makers have to design something that's as complicated as possible to manufacture.

This week the Federal Reserve announced that a new, redesigned $100 bill is coming out, and as you'd expect, the thing is a cornucopia of proprietary manufacturing techniques. It's got embedded thread imprinted with "USA" and "100," and when you hit it with a UV light the thread glows pink; it's got the X-ray thing where a blank space on the bill reveals a hidden face (Benny Franklin) when it's backlit; the copper-colored "100" turns green when you tilt the bill.

It's also got a "3D Security Ribbon" (that blue stripe you see) containing images of a funky bell that visually transforms into a "100." So where's the 3D part? The bell/100 appear to move and shift in a 3D, holographic way while you wave the money around, as we in the Core77 offices do during our weekly dice games in the hallway with the building superintendent and the FedEx guy.

Things That Look Like Other Things: Clip Bag by Peter Bristol

Jakesollins

Still want to open a store that only sells things that look like other things.

PeterBristol-ClipBag-stairs.jpg

Well, the name kind of gives it away, but for some reason it's still surprisingly delightful... probably because the small purse is a dead ringer for the office supply it's based on.

Designer Peter Bristol—whose work we've seen before—notes that the Clip Bag is a case where "new scale creates new purpose."

Composite Of All 57 Of Seinfeld's TV Girlfriends

A fairly bland-looking woman, which is quite apropos.

Blatantly stolen from ANIMAL New York, which is New York City's best culture website.

The print, by artist and world's most famous photography appropriator Richard Prince, is titled Jerry's Girl.

Prince says: "This a composite of all of Jerry Seinfeld's girlfriends. There were 57 over the course of the show."

It will be available soon, for all you Jerry groupies.

12 Mind-Blowingly Gorgeous Vintage Photos From Martha Stewart's Modeling Career

These photos might just change your perception on “America's Queen of Entertaining” and that is a good thing.

Long before Martha Stewart was a multimedia lifestyle guru/mogul, she was a model. Beginning her career at age fifteen, and continuing to model as a student at Barnard College - as a way to supplement her scholarship.

Impulsive Furnishing Unit wins Frame Moooi Award 2013

by Emilie Chalcraft

Impulsive Furnishing Unit

Milan 2013: a compact furniture production line designed by Design Academy Eindhoven alumni Thomas Vailly, Itay Ohaly and Christian Fiebig has won this year's Frame Moooi Award.

Impulsive Furnishing Unit

The creators of the Impulsive Furnishing Unit were presented with the interior design award this evening in a ceremony at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Impulsive Furnishing Unit

Thomas Vailly, Itay Ohaly and Christian Fiebig's design compresses a whole furniture factory to the size of a standardised plywood pallet so that it can be shipped and used anywhere.

"By adjusting the CNC machine to the thickness of each sheet, it will only cut one sheet at a time," explain the designers. "As soon as the machine is finished with cutting the top sheet it will cut two holes as handles on one of the length sides of the board.

Impulsive Furnishing Unit

"This side of the machine can then be opened and the cut board can be pulled out. The CNC machine will smoothly drop on the next sheet to cut. If one pallet of wood is almost finished it simply has to be stacked on the next pallet, and the machine continues to cut sheet by sheet."

The machine was used to create furniture for the C-Fabriek exhibition in the Netherlands last year, where visitors were invited to pitch in and make furniture, lighting, clothes, shoes and more on experimental production lines.

The Frame Moooi Award is presented annually to furniture or lighting custom-designed for a specific public or commercial interior and the winner receives €25,000.

The finalists were anonymously selected by Jana Scholze, curator of contemporary furniture and product design at the V&A museum in London.

Vailly is also showing a compact fashion production line designed with Laura Lynn Jansen, called Inner Fashion, and another one-man furniture factory, Stool Unit, in Milan this week at Cascina Cuccagna, Via Cuccagna 2, on the invitation of Eindhoven-based StudioKlawer.

We've previously featured a few other designs by Ohaly, including benches that have been torn or smashed into individual chairs and jewellery carved from layers of coloured paint applied to a wooden table – see all design by Itay Ohaly.
