Beer Can Be a Better Pain Reliever Than Tylenol

by Patrick Allan

As if you needed another reason to grab a cold one, a new study suggests having a few beers relieves your pain better than popping some over the counter painkillers.

The study, led by Dr. Trevor Thompson from the University of Greenwich, and published in The Journal of Pain, found that raising your blood alcohol content to the legal limit of .08%, or about three or four beers deep, elevates your pain threshold significantly. This was according to a meta-analysis of 18 different studies looking at the effect of different dosages of alcohol on subject pain response.

Based on the research, Thompson says alcohol is an effective analgesic (or pain reliever) that “delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity,” which probably isn’t too surprising if you’ve ever been in a bar fight or taken a drunken tumble. Not much hurts when you’re three sheets to the wind. What is surprising, however, is that the pain relieving power of alcohol was actually shown to be more powerful than paracetamol, or what’s more commonly known as acetaminophen or Tylenol.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should knock back a six-pack every time you have a headache, but it does highlight an oft-overlooked positive aspect of alcohol consumption. Of course, if you drink too much, you’re really just postponing pain until the next morning.

Best MicroSD Card For Android

by Alex Dobie

Best top-tier

Samsung EVO+ 256GB

See at Amazon

Samsung's very-highest-of-the-high-end microSD card isn't cheap. In fact, it's the priciest on this list. But you're also getting a winning combination of performance and storage capacity, with 90MB/sec write speeds and 95MB/sec reads, and an enormous 256GB of space.

That's more than you'll ever need in a smartphone, and the high read/write speeds will help if you're shooting lots of 4K video on a high-end phone like the Galaxy S8 (as too will that enormous capacity.) Better still, it's water, temperature, X-ray and magnetic proof, so you needn't worry about it getting damaged while you're out and about.

Best value - capacity

Samsung EVO Select 128GB

See at Amazon

If you want a nice high storage capacity without breaking the bank, Samsung's 128GB card is a good option — it provides a staggering amount of storage, and with pretty fast read and write speeds to boot — though remember your phone probably won't be able to achieve the maximum read and write speeds quoted here. It's about the lowest price we've seen for a 128GB card, and a great way to free up a ton of space on your phone or tablet.

What's more, you can pay an extra few bucks at checkout and get an OTG reader thrown in too.

Best value - speed

Lexar Professional 1000x 32GB UHS-II/U3

See at Amazon

If speed is more important, you might want to give this Lexar card a shot. It uses UHS-II flash memory and boasts read speeds of up to 150MB/sec — but only to supporting PCs and cameras, no phone we're aware of currently supports UHS-II speeds for reads and writes. The capacity isn't the greatest, but there are also 64 and 128GB variants available, if you're willing to pay more.

The Lexar card also comes with a USB reader for plugging into your PC and transferring data at higher speeds.

Best Balanced

Lexar High-Performance microSDXC 300x

See at Amazon

This Lexar card won't break the bank — it's just under $26 at the time of writing — but offers a great balance of speed and capacity. 64GB should be enough for most people's photo, video and offline music needs, while the card's UHS-I speed rating provides ample performance.

There's no full-sized SD adapter bundled with this card, but you can't argue with the price for this kind of microSD.

Update, October 2017: This list has been updated to reflect new pricing for some of these cards.

Zagg's sapphire-infused screen protector is nothing more than plastic snake oil

by Florence Ion

You don't have to spend wads of cash on this overpriced product to protect your new Galaxy S8.

The term "sapphire crystal" may sound like something that's incredibly protective, especially when you consider the fact that sapphire is one of the hardest nature-made materials on Earth. But things are not always what they seem, as proven by the latest JerryRigEverything torture test with Zagg's pricey Galaxy S8 curved glass screen protector.

The $50 Zagg Sapphire Defense advertises that it's effective because it's infused with sapphire. And though it does offer traces of factory-made sapphire in the plastic, according to the report, it's not nearly as protective as the real thing. For comparison, JerryRigEverything shows off a Tissot watch and an HTC U Ultra with actual sapphire displays. They hardly scratch, compared to the Zagg Sapphire Defense, which seems just as effective as any other screen protector — or worse, when you consider that it claims to be made of glass.

Take it from us: If you want ample screen protection, any of of these case-friendly screen protectors will do for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Many of the entries even come in packs of multiples, so you can have a backup on the ready the minute you receive your first scratch.

Crosswords With Friends is Zynga's newest "with friends" game

by Matthew Sholtz

People Magazine and Zynga have teamed up to create the next "with friends" game. It is titled Crosswords With Friends and it is clearly a crossword game that focuses on People Magazine's bread and butter of entertainment, celebrity, and sports news. Each day a different puzzle with a new theme will be pushed to the app. That means you will receive 365 crossword puzzles a year. A lofty challenge indeed!

To be quite honest, I am not a huge fan of Zynga or their pricing models.

Google bakes phishing protection into the Gmail for Android app

by Corbin Davenport

Perhaps due to today's outbreak of a widespread phishing scam, or simply by coincidence, Google is rolling out enhanced anti-phishing security checks in Gmail for Android. When users tap on a suspicious link, the above warning will now appear.

Judging by the page design, this feature appears to use Google's Safe Browsing database, which catalogs sites known to host malware or trick users into giving away information. Ironically, this wouldn't have done anything to prevent the recent phishing outbreak, as the link in that email redirected to a normal Google login page.

PSA: This Google Doc scam is spreading fast and will email everyone you know

by Greg Kumparak
A new Google Docs phishing scam just reared its head a few hours ago, and it’s spreading like wildfire. Google appears to be taking action to stop it, but in the mean time: be super, super wary of Google Doc invites for now. If you fall for this one (and plenty of otherwise eagle-eyed people have already), it’ll blast out the bait to everyone on your contact list. Here’s what… Read More

Chat backups, link previews, and group incognito are coming to Google Allo today

by Ryne Hager

Hero

Allo might not be a true replacement for those that used Hangouts until it has web or desktop client, but development on Google's latest messaging solution still continues apace. Amit Fulay, the Head of Product at Google for Allo and Duo, tweeted earlier this morning that some new features were rolling out today. The update isn't out at the time of writing, but he claims it will include the ability to backup and restore chats, add incognito mode to group chats, and introduce link previews.

Get some Awesome on your home screen with these Guardians of the Galaxy wallpapers

by Ara Wagoner

Ooga-chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-chaka Ooga-Ooga...

The Guardians of the Galaxy are back, with another AWESOME soundtrack that lives up to its Awesome Mix name, old foes made allies, new foes to threaten the galaxy, and there's plenty of out-of-this-world wacky weirdness to go around! Before you head to theaters this weekend, you should put some galactic goodness on your home screen, so we've got our own little Awesome Mix going... an awesome wallpaper mix that is.

Starlord is a devilish rogue that's easy to love, and nobody makes him easy to love than Chris Pratt. Being a half-human raised across the universe by a variety of aliens, it's amazing that the Guardians' leader is as well-rounded, mostly-moral, and ridiculously fun as he is. It's easy to forget that all of that amazingness is often hidden under that awkward and quite intimidating battle helmet.

It's not as easy to forget that under that battle helmet, he's probably humming top 70's hits.

Starlord by DannySchlitz

Drax is a serious man with some serious issues as well as a seriously difficult relationship with metaphors, slang, and the intricacies of non-literal language. A serious warrior deserves a seriously kickass wallpaper, with him about to absolutely destroy someone, hopefully not the artist capturing his unbridled fury. If you're someone who dreams of violently letting out your frustrations... you should maybe see someone about that, but in the meantime, take this wallpaper and let Drax get it our for you!

Drax by Puekkers

Gamora can kill a man a hundred different ways, with or without a weapon, but she's still got a soft side, and after years of torment and torture (giving and taking), she's learning to explore a softer side of existence again. From stealing Starlord's tunes every now and again to learning to love and accept herself, Gamora is a reminder that no matter how far into the dark we go in life, we can always come back to the light.

Gamora by Avionecta

Nebula by Deviantapplestudios

Who else is excited Nebula is joining the "good guys" for a while this time? Because I'm excited for Nebula to join the Guardians for a while. The cybernetic killer with the electrical weaponry played two sides in the first installment, but both were murdering psychopathic villains, and there's more in her than hateful comments and death glares... right? Well, looking at this wallpaper, I'm not sure, but I will say that Nebula is one cyborg chick you do NOT want to cross.

Baby Groot may be the best upgrade this time around, and yeah, there's something about a chibi character with amazing abilities and limited vocabulary that lends itself to pop culture adoration and internet memes. Baby Groot is like a tiny Pokemon that's going to evolve back into a giant warrior, but for now, he's a slightly OP little scene-stealer who gets carried around on everyone's shoulder.

"I am Groot."

You said it, sapling...

How not to defraud Workers' Comp

by Rob Beschizza

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ac7LzckbW0&t=0m22s

The glitched shimmer of a Fort Lauderdale office CCTV feed. A woman long of bone at the machine. A sprinkler head fell on her desk and she gaped up at the pebbledash expanse of the droptile ceiling. The metal thing just sat there on the melamine under the cold flourescent light. Then she took it up and bashed her head with it. I can't tell you what she was thinking but I can tell you what come to pass.

"Her employer's insurance company got suspicious and brought in Florida's Division of Investigative and Forensic Services." At least that's how Fox 13 out of Tampa put it. God might not see nor care but they had a camera upon her the whole while. They fired her and charged her with insurance fraud. The judge put her on 18 months' probation.

They never gave her money so she don't have to repay none.

Google has added more wallpapers to the Pixel and its Wallpapers app

The word "sheeple" is now in the dictionary, with Apple fans as example

Review: Moto G5 Plus is the budget smartphone done right, again [Video]

by Hayato Huseman

It seems like flagship phones get all the media coverage. Everybody wants to fawn over the latest superphones and see what crazy new design element or software gimmick their favorite OEM has to offer. But not everybody needs a phone with all of the highest-end features — and more importantly, not everybody can afford one.

Luckily for those people, the Moto G series has always been a great way to get flagship-like performance without the flagship price. The G5 Plus is the latest addition to the series, but does it hold true to its family’s reputation?

MP3 put out to pasture

by Rob Beschizza

It's the end of an era, sort of: Fraunhofer IIS, the developers of the MP3 audio compression format, announced that they are ceasing their licensing program. In a blog post, spokesman Matthias Rose says that it's had a good 20-year run and is obsolete. But it's also true that the decoding patents expired last year, and the last encoding patents are soon to follow. So there's not much hope of selling any licenses in any case.

Vegans Can Now Drink Guinness, But Only From a Keg

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Andy Orin to Lifehacker

The drinking vegan must live a life of constant vigilance. Though beer and wine themselves rarely contain any animal products or byproducts, they’re often filtered using isinglass (fish bladders) to remove yeast and other solids. Fortunately, Guinness is moving away from this practice, and vegans can now enjoy a pint of the stout in the comfort of their favorite pub.

Don’t hit the bottle shop just yet, though. According to Quartz, the only Guinness products that are currently vegan-friendly are kegs of Guinness Draught (what we think of as “regular” Guinness), Guinness that’s brewed in Australia, and the Blonde American Lager, though there are plans to veganize cans and bottles by the end of the year. (Related: If you want to check and see if your favorite beer, wine, or spirit is vegan, Barnivore is a great resource for doing so.)
