The haunting art of Annie Owens

by Sarina Frauenfelder

Artist Annie Owens’ exhibition titled “A Place Worth Knowing” will be on display at La Luz De Jesus gallery in LA from August 4th-28th. If you can’t make it to the gallery, you should definitely check out her work on her website here.

Annie’s watercolor paintings are delicately haunting. They simultaneously look like antique photographs and scenes out of an eerie fantasy world. Her work features desolate landscapes and floating houses. The women in her paintings are isolated, ghostlike, and almost appear to be translucent. Here is an excerpt from Annie’s artist’s statement about “A Place Worth Knowing”:

As one of my favorite authors Algernon Blackwood put it, “No place worth knowing yields itself at sight, and those the least inviting on first view may leave the most haunting pictures upon the walls of memory.”...Taking my queues from Blackwood’s quote, “A Place Worth Knowing” allegorically speaks to our habit as humans of turning away from the seemingly unknowable in ourselves and in others. Preferring to view the strange and unusual from a safe distance in much the same way mysterious and unexplored mountain ranges appear daunting and unreachable – opting to observe rather than to interact.

After a short hiatus, BLU phones are back on Amazon

by Ryne Hager

Earlier this week Amazon took some of the low-budget manufacturer BLU's phones off the retailer's digital shelves, following allegations that BLU had included spyware in its products. It seems to have been a false alarm, though, as today BLU has announced in a tweet that Amazon is back to stocking its phones. Customers looking to pick up a cheap and capable phone can again purchase them at the US' biggest online merchant.

ICE held US citizen for 3.5 years, then dumped him in rural Alabama with no money and no explanation

by Mark Frauenfelder

A Federal Appeals courts says Davino Watson, a U.S. citizen, has no right to damages awarded to him by a lower court after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) imprisoned for over 3 years as a deportable alien then dumped him without explanation in Alabama, leaving him with no means to get home to New York.

From NPR:

There is no right to a court-appointed attorney in immigration court. Watson, who was 23 and didn't have a high school diploma when he entered ICE custody, didn't have a lawyer of his own. So he hand-wrote a letter to immigration officers, attaching his father's naturalization certificate, and kept repeating his status to anyone who would listen.

Still, Immigration and Customs Enforcement kept Watson imprisoned as a deportable alien for nearly 3 1/2 years. Then it released Watson, who was from New York, in rural Alabama with no money and no explanation. Deportation proceedings continued for another year.

Watson was correct all along: He was a U.S. citizen. After he was released, he filed a complaint. Last year, a district judge in New York awarded him $82,500 in damages, citing "regrettable failures of the government."

On Monday, an appeals court ruled that Watson, now 32, is not eligible for any of that money — because while his case is "disturbing," the statute of limitations actually expired while he was still in ICE custody without a lawyer.

Budget vs. Mid-range vs. Premium: Exploring the different phone categories

by Daniel Bader

The budget and mid-range phone space is full of great phones, so does that make you less likely to buy a flagship?

The Android space is saturated. There are great phones at every price point, from the $70 Moto E4 all the way up to the $800+ Galaxy S8+. And while the premium phone segment will always have a place in the market for early adopters and tech enthusiasts, it's not clear whether the returns are worth it.

Case in point: the Moto G5 Plus, which costs around $230 but can be found for less, is a fantastic budget device with very few compromises. And the OnePlus 5, which costs $479, is a premium phone at a mid-range price. How do they stack up to the aforementioned Galaxy S8+? Our resident video guru, Jacklyn, explores this question in her latest video.

Here is the first live look at the Google Pixel 2

by Daniel Bader

This is our best look yet at the smaller Google Pixel 2, known internally as Walleye.

We've been talking about the new Pixel phones for months now, as the behind-the-scenes drama has been not only engrossing but highly divisive. Earlier in the year, we heard that HTC would be making both Pixel sequels as it did the first generation, but subsequent rumors suggested that Google decided to partner with LG, likely for access to its OLED panels, for the larger Pixel XL 2.

Now, thanks to Evan Blass of @evleaks and VentureBeat, we know what the smaller Pixel, codenamed Walleye, will look like. In fact, if you're an OG Pixel owner, you already know what it looks like, as the sequel bears a striking resemblance.

The image above, which we've lightened to expose the darkened front of the phone, reveals a device that looks like a slightly squarer (Note-ier?) version of the Google Pixel, with ample bezels above and below the screen, a dual-toned back with a glass inlay near the top, and an aluminum chassis. The camera appears to be in the same position as the 2016 Pixel, but the sensor and lens module is quite a bit larger. A rear fingerprint sensor, also centered, is now below the glass area, and a single "G" Google logo sits, also centered, near the bottom.

Blass points to at least one significant improvement over the Pixel: dual front-facing speakers, which should help somewhat justify (but not totally excuse) the front bezels above and below the screen. The first-generation version only contains a single down-port speaker on the bottom of the device.

The report also, unfortunately, confirms that in adding a second speaker, Google has opted to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack, a controversial decision that may keep some people away from this year's Pixel lineup.

Monsanto's lawyers forgot to ask a court to suppress damning evidence about cancer and corrupt science

by Cory Doctorow

Google will now allow real-money gambling apps on the Play Store in the UK, Ireland, and France

by Scott Scrivens

Last month, we heard rumors that Google was planning to relax its ban on real-money gambling apps in the Play Store, but after reaching out to Google we didn't get a response either way. With an update to its developer policy page, Google has now confirmed that some of these apps are going to be allowed on the Play Store in the UK, Ireland, and France.

The gambling apps will be subject to a strict application process if they want to get in, meeting the requirements outlined on the content policy page.

Medical expert says you've been taking antibiotics the wrong way

by Mark Frauenfelder

Whenever I am prescribed antibiotics, I faithfully take all the pills. I've always been told that's the way to prevent antibiotic resistance. Brad Spellberg, the chief medical officer for the Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Medical Center, says this is bullshit.

It is absolutely false that continuing to take antibiotics after you feel completely better will reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Quite to the contrary, it will very likely promote the emergence of antibiotic resistance!

Spellberg says the reason we are in an epidemic of antibiotic resistance is because "75 percent or more of antibiotic use is unnecessary." He says that if you do have to take antibiotics, "give your doctor a call and ask if you can safely stop therapy" when you feel much better.

The article has other interesting points, too. Well worth a read.

Allo v15 adds a shortcut to your contacts so you can quickly start messaging [APK Download]

by Cody Toombs

allo

A new version of Allo began rolling out yesterday, but unlike so many previous releases, this one wasn't preceded by any Twitter announcements from the developer team. That's not too surprising because this looks more like a maintenance release. However, there was one subtle enhancement that's definitely worth pointing out: Allo now integrates with contacts on your phone so you can quickly jump to the app and start a conversation. A teardown of the apk revealed that most of the other changes are in service to the upcoming launch of an Allo web client, which had been examined in detail with a teardown of v14.

This $50 speaker turns your Amazon Echo Dot into a poor man's Sonos Play:1

by Phil Nickinson

... Minus the deep, deep bass. And everything else great Sonos does. But this is still a cool little accessory for an Echo Dot.

There's nothing particularly exciting about the Amazon Echo Dot when it comes to audio, at least not with the speaker itself. Sure, it can play music, but it sounds horrible. You know that when you bought it, of course, and the Echo Dot helpfully has a a 3.5mm line-out jack, and the ability to hit up other speakers via Bluetooth.

That's a clunky solution, though, and more often than not one that leads to you needing even more cables running all over the place.

This VAUX speaker, however, looks slick. The Echo Dot fits down inside it and looks almost like a Sonos Play:1, if you squint at it just right. It's got an internal 2500mAh battery that'll power the Echo Dot and its own Micro-USB and audio cables hidden inside, too.

In other words, it's a portable speaker for the Echo Dot.

And, yeah, it looks decent. The sound, however, is lacking. Talk of "Dual 52mm Drivers and a passive radiator for impressive sound and bass" is just that — talk. What little bass you can actually hear doesn't show up until you crank the volume, and even then it's not what I'd call "impressive."

One other thing to know is that while this speaker gives you a not-quite-a-full-size-echo sort of experience, you can use it with Amazon's $3.99/month Amazon Music Unlimited Echo plan. (That plan is limited to a single device, however. So if you've got a full Echo or Echo Show, you're better of using that instead.)

So what you've got at this point is a fairly impressive-looking $50 speaker that sounds better than the Echo Dot itself. But it's not so much improved that you wouldn't be better off just buying a refurbished first-generation Echo for $129 instead. That extra money is going to go a long way.

But this is the sort of thing that I could potentially leave on my porch and not feel too bad about. My Sonos Play:1? That doesn't need to be left laying around where anyone could walk away with it. It's an OK Bluetooth speaker for $50, with the ability to take Alexa outside the confines of home, but not much more than that.

Comment: Round & Adaptive icons mark the sad end of distinct icon designs in Android

by Abner Li

Be together. Not the same” remains a fairly fitting tagline for Android as it aptly describes the diversity found in the hardware and software experiences for Google’s mobile operating system. The statement also perfectly describes distinct parts of Android today, including the new Adaptive Icons found in 8.0.

With the new 8.0 feature, it’s easier than ever for icons to be displayed in a “variety of shapes across different device models.” While a win for customizability and (to some extent) uniformity, it is far from an excuse to lazily drop your existing icon into a circle…
