Protagonist exercise

Another assignment I did along with the students. I do wish I had more time to spend on the monster even though the focus was the kid. Maybe someday if I paint it up I'll fix his design.

Is everyone playing Inktober this year? I’m posting my dailies on Instagram and Facebook, but I thought I’d post the first week of drawings here too.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Today I wanted to show you a little panel from the comic book...

Today I wanted to show you a little panel from the comic book Bran I worked on for the past months together with writer Flora Grimaldi.

Flora asked me at the beginning if I wanted to make a book with her and I have to admit I hesitated then. I was never very confident with my comics. I did a few short ones and a lot of people told me they liked them, but still I was very unsure if they were any good. (I never felt like this about my illustrations…) Even though I still was very selfconscious and basically freaking out about it all, I decided to say yes to Flora.

When I started working on the book, it was hard sometimes to not always think to myself, „that’s probably not good enough“ or „other people are better than you are“(the last one is most definitely true). But that will always be the case and why go through all the trouble thinking that all the time. It only makes you miserable and stops you from trying new things and evolve.
So now I look at all the positive : I learned so much new things, got hopefully better at it and had a lot of fun working together with wonderful people.

So thanks to you, Nicolas and Flora, and thanks to everyone who decides to take a look on the finished comic in January (only in french unfortunately)!

And thank you so much to Steven who helped me to think more positively. You’re the best!

The Hipster Warrior

Sup guys!

This is a weird idea I had last may, it's a gang of hipsters living/stuck in a wow/dofus kinda universe.(used to be a big fan of these two when I was a 13)

I'm developing the whole universe around this idea and it's pretty dope!

More to come soon!

bridgioto:

Bravest Warriors #24 is coming out next week, with this cover I did for it! Here’s some of the process work - I included some explanations this time. I don’t know if it’ll be helpful at all or just… verbose… but hopefully there’s something useful in there :>

1. Thumbnail

2. Tight sketch

3. Rough values painted underneath the sketch

4. Value painting on top of the sketch to tighten things up

5. Flat colors! Regular area fill for set pieces, and a few color/overlay layers to quickly indicate hues in the painting

6. Set lighting: using multiply layers to indicate the overall scene lighting raking across the wall, working out how that will interact with the portrait painting and lead the eye. Also continuing to paint in regular layers on top of the portrait.

7. Warming/brightening up the scene lighting, picking out highlights on the frame, softening some form shadow edges to add dimension, adding some rimlight to Catbug. Continuing to work up the portrait. Adding occlusion shadows under the frame and curtains.

8. Using a lighten layer to better expose and unify the areas of the scene struck by light. Lightening the shadow areas a bit to raise overall tone and prevent stuff from getting lost or too dark.

9. Pushing the lights even further to get a stronger afternoon-light feel and create better separation between light and shadow. Adding a soft glow around the light edges. And dust mote sparkles! :>

This is the rough animatic of Garnet and Amethyst’s fusion dance from Coach Steven! It’s got the scratch music track that we animated to: “Freak” by Estelle.

This was a super fun collaboration. I animated Garnet’s dancing and Rebecca Sugar animated Amethyst dancing. We had to synchronize!

Pearl covering Steven’s eyes was done by Raven Molisee and Sugilite appearing was drawn by Paul Villeco.

Animatic editing by Lauren Hecht

Voices by Estelle and Nicki Minaj

I don’t care how much meat from a ridiculous bird gets thrown at you, sometimes it’s just not worth the physical and emotional trauma of hauling yourself around to visit extended family. Many of us have to suffer through grueling conversations, awkward reintroductions, and boredom so intense it could kill someone not accustomed to it. Is it really worth it for that bird? Is it?!

Nevermind, it totally is. I take it all back.

This Thursday is the culmination of what would be a minor extinction event for other, lesser species, but is simply another Thanksgiving for our noble friend, the turkey. People all around the US, both religious and secular, will meet around the dinner table with their close or extended families to share a meal and to give thanks to gods, the universe, the flying spaghetti monster, or whatever force they choose to affiliate themselves with. Some of us will just complain to the people around us, but then again some of us have probably earned that right. I would encourage everyone celebrating (and those not celebrating!) to just take a moment to think of the good things you have in your life and appreciate them as fully as you can.

Life is a challenging experience and sometimes it can become overwhelming, but it is not without its perks. Even when you feel like things are difficult, there are still things to be thankful for, to recognize and appreciate. The simple act of appreciation can often help ease the burdens we all live with.

One thing I hope you fin folks will appreciate is that I’ve been working diligently on the first Happle Tea book! I was hoping to have it ready for Christmas but I’ll have to do a Kickstarter campaign and that means a 30 day period of raising funds. I’m searching for a new place to live, thinking about purchasing myself a car, and generally working my buns off on freelance gigs, Happle Tea, Patreon rewards, and this book, so I will not have enough money to fund the printing myself. I’m hopeful that you guys, girls, and others will be ready to contribute to the campaign when it’s ready! I will be keeping everyone posted on its progress. As of right now, the comics are all laid out, the text is in place, a couple of bonus essays have been written, and I’ve started designing the cover. I’ve also got the pages for bonus material set aside, I’ll just have to finish that stuff up but that will be fun.

Anyway, I’m also writing a lot more so hopefully I’ll be able to get back to doing comics more regularly. This once a week thing just doesn’t feel right to me! There are also a bunch of mythology strips written so don’t worry, we’ll get back to that shortly.

I hope all those celebrating have a lovely Thanksgiving and I hope that those of you not celebrating simply have a lovely day!

Wrist is still in rough shape so I’ve been trying to do regular non-dominant hand drawings.  Since I’m already unsteady doing this stuff, I’m trying to force myself to draw things I don’t like drawing.

Moses’ mom, Jochebed, though she may have had good intentions, probably was not fit to look after a child. What kind of mother hides her newborn baby boy by floating him on the Nile river? Sure, you saved him from being drowned by the Pharaoh’s goons, but that river isn’t exactly famous for its peaceful wildlife. All I can say is, it’s a damn good thing Moses had the G-man on his side or he’d have been a tiny snack for a crocodile!

Of course, I’m sure there were plenty of other ladies that tried the same trick and didn’t get so lucky. Maybe the wildlife was just full by the time Moses made his way to the water.

Out of so many comics, it’s kind of surprising I haven’t done more jokes about Moses considering what an iconic figure he is for so many world religions. I’ve really got to step up my game here.

Moses was born at a trying time in the mythological history of the Hebrew people. A new pharaoh had risen to power and he noticed an alarming increase in the Hebrew population in the lands that he controlled. Worried, that these people might rise against him, the leader of the Egyptians declared that all newborn Hebrew boys be drowned in the Nile. Moses’ mother placed him in an ark and hid him near the riverbank. In the Biblical account, Moses’ older sister, Miriam, is sent to watch over him but she was only seven years old! Luckily for Moses, being a chosen child of Yahweh, he does not get devoured by crocodiles before the story even gets going.

Moses is eventually found by the Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in their household. Again, the incredible power of Yahweh melts the heart of this woman (but doesn’t stop Pharaoh from presumably drowning all those other babies that weren’t Moses) who has been conditioned to despise the Hebrew people. Pharaoh’s daughter rescues the boy and sends one of her servants to find a nurse for the child and, wouldn’t you know it, the woman brings back Moses’ own mother. She nurses her son until he is old enough, then gives him over to the Pharaoh’s daughter to raise as her own son. Moses, as a member of the royal household, learns science and math from the Egyptians and learns everything he would need to become Pharaoh himself.

It is only later in his life that Moses turns down the path that would set himself as one of the greatest leaders in Biblical mythology. Moses, inspecting the kingdom, begins to feel sympathy for the Hebrew people after witnessing their plight. When he witnesses a slave master mercilessly whipping some Hebrew slaves, he murders the fellow in cold blood and hides the body in the sands. When Moses finds out that this dark deed has been discovered by others (specifically that Pharaoh might know) he flees into the desert, giving up his former life forever.

It is in the desert that Moses encounters the burning bush and learns the name of God. In the desert he starts to become the great leader that would free the Hebrews from bondage and the one to deliver them to the promised land.

Good thing he survived the Nile!
